Systematic bias in MODIS dust aerosol retrieval at Kanpur (AERONET), Indo-Gangetic Basin - art.no.640816

We have compared the spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) and aerosol fine mode fraction (AFMF) derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) with those of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) at Kanpur (26.45N, 80.35E), northern India for the pre-monsoon season (March to June, 2001-2005). We found that MODIS systematically overestimates AOD during pre-monsoon season (known to be influenced by dust transport from north-west of India). The errors in AOD were correlated with the MODIS top-of-atmosphere apparent surface reflectance in 2.1 mu m channel (rho*(2.1)). MODIS aerosol algorithm uses p*(2.1) to derive the surface reflectance in visible channels (rho(0.47), rho(0.66)) using an empirical mid IR-visible correlation (rho(0.47) = rho(2.1)/4, rho(0.66) = rho(2.1)/2). The large uncertainty in estimating surface reflectance in visible channels (Delta rho(0.66)+/- 0.04, Delta rho(0.47)+/- 0.02) at higher values of p*(2.1) (p*(2.1) > 0.18) leads to higher aerosol contribution in the total reflected radiance at top-of atmosphere to compensate for the reduced surface reflectance in visible channels and thus leads to overestimation of AOD. This was also reflected in the very low values of AFMF during pre-monsoon whose accuracy depends on the aerosol path radiance in 0.47 and 0.66 mu m channels and aerosol models. The errors in AOD were also high in the scattering angle range 110 degrees-140 degrees, where the effect of dust non-spherity on its optical properties is significant. The direct measurements of spectral surface reflectance are required over the Indo-Gangetic basin in order to validate the mid IR-visible relationship. MODIS aerosol models should also be modified to incorporate the effect of non-spherity of dust aerosols.

Novel composite coded pattern for small angle measurement using imaging method -art.no.62891D

A novel approach for measurement of small rotation angles using imaging method is proposed and demonstrated. A plane mirror placed on a precision rotating table is used for imaging the newly designed composite coded pattern. The imaged patterns are captured with the help of a CCD camera. The angular rotation of the plane mirror is determined from a pair of the images of the pattern, captured once before and once after affecting the tilt of the mirror. Both simulation and experimental results suggest that the proposed approach not only retains the advantages of the original imaging method but also contributes significantly to the enhancement of its measuring range (+/- 4.13 degrees with accuracy of the order of 1 arcsec).

Peftjauawybast, king of Nen-nesut : genealogy, art history, and the chronology of late libyan Egypt

This paper argues in detail for the identification of Peftjauawybast, King of Nen-nesut (fl. 728/720 BC ), with Peftjauawybast, High Priest of Ptah in Memphis (fl. c. 790–780 BC2), known from the Apis stela of year 28 of Shoshenq III. This identification ties in with a significant lowering of the accepted dates for the kings from Shoshenq III, Osorkon III and Takeloth III to Shoshenq V, and the material culture associated with them. Such a shift seems to be supported by stylistic and genealogical evidence. As a consequence, it is further suggested that the Master of Shipping at Nen-nesut, Pediese i, was perhaps related by descent and marriage to the family of the High Priests of Memphis and King Peftjauawybast.

High-brightness GaN-based blue LEDs grown on a wet-patterned sapphire substrate - art. no. 68410T

Patterning sapphire substrate can relax the stress in the nitride epilayer, reduce the threading dislocation density, and significantly improve device performance. In this article, a wet-etching method for sapphire substrate is developed. The effect of substrate surface topographies on the quality of the GaN epilayers and corresponding device performance are investigated. The GaN epilayers grown on the wet-patterned sapphire substrates by MOCVD are characterized by means of scanning electrical microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD), and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. In comparison with the planar sapphire substrate, about a 22% increase in device performance with light output power of 13.31 mW@20mA is measured for the InGaN/GaN blue LEDs grown on the wet-patterned sapphire substrate.

Tandem electroabsorption modulators integrated with DFB laser by ultra-low-pressure selective-area-growth MOCVD for 10 GHz optical short pulse generation - art. no. 60200O

A novel device of tandem multiple quantum wells (MQWs) electroabsorption modulators (EAMs) monolithically integrated with DFB laser is fabricated by ultra-low-pressure (22 mbar) selective area guowth (SAG) MOCVD technique. Experimental results exhibit superior device characteristics with low threshold of 19 mX output light power of 4.5 mW and over 20 dB extinction ratio when coupled into a single mode Fiber. Moreover, over 10 GHz modulation bandwidth is developed with a driving voltage of 2 V. Using I this sinusoidal voltage driven integrated device, 10GHz repetition rate pulse with a width of 13.7 ps without any compression elements is obtained.

La constitución de la pared celular durante la madurez en planta de peras Bartlett, y sus modificaciones por la incidencia de luz : consecuencias sobre la eficacia de los tratamientos con 1-metilciclopropeno

La firmeza es el atributo más importante en las peras y está determinada en parte, por la estructura de la pared celular (PC) y por su desintegración. No han sido completamente identificadas las modificaciones que ocurren en los polisacáridos de la PC de pulpa y piel ni las anomalías bioquímicas que se asociarían a la aparición de texturas atípicas provocada por una cosecha tardía de peras Bartlett. Tampoco se ha analizado a la fecha la influencia de los factores precosecha sobre la composición de la PC, el ablandamiento de los frutos y la eficacia de tratamientos de poscosecha como los realizados con 1-metilciclopropeno (1- MCP), inhibidor de la acción del etileno. A fin de estudiar estos aspectos se muestrearon peras Bartlett que maduraron en planta para los estudios de ontogenia en pulpa y piel; al mismo tiempo se trabajó con peras que crecieron bajo diferentes condiciones de radiación a campo y luego fueron almacenadas a 20 ºC por 13 y 23 d con y sin tratamiento de 1-MCP. Se determinó la firmeza, el color, los sólidos solubles, la acidez titulable, el porcentaje de almidón, la producción de etileno, el jugo libre, se realizó análisis sensorial y luego se efectuó la extracción y fraccionamiento de la PC. Sobre esta última se determinó la solubilidad, composición y distribución de tamaños moleculares. Los resultados demostraron que los frutos que maduraron en planta presentaron anomalías texturales asociadas a una menor solubilización de pectinas y de arabinosa. Asimismo se determinó que la composición y el metabolismo de PC de peras Bartlett difieren en el tejido de pulpa y piel. Se estableció que la mayor exposición solar resultó en un aumento de la firmeza de los frutos. Esto se relacionó con una mayor proporción de pectinas solubles en álcali y hemicelulosas de mayor tamaño molecular a cosecha. Por último, la eficacia del 1-MCP se vio incrementada por condiciones de mayor radiación-temperatura en precosecha, siendo la radiación UVB poco relevantes.

Museums as a factor for the social integration of art in the community. The experience of cultural volunteering by members of the senior community

After considering museums as cultural institutions responsible for preserving cultural memory and its evolution over time, this article describes the cultural practices within our society that are aimed at disseminating art and at reproducing and transmitting culture, history and identity. Further, it considers the key role that older people are steadily assuming in Spain’s ageing society. New social-empowerment activities based on volunteering by the elderly are linked to generativity because the individual and social groups acquire new skills through those activities, thereby strengthening a society for all ages. Never in the history of social work have so many older people been prepared to participate actively at the community level, and never has a social movement with these features gone so unnoticed by so many social agents.

Art, adolescence and Social Work: Anja, the invisible manager

This article has been written with the intention of being able to analyse the contributions of art —theatre, in this case— to the practice of social work. For this purpose, we have chosen to read the social reality in which we intervene through the lens of social constructionism. This helps us to rescue the social and subjective side of art, and, moreover, to recover the depathologization of the subject in professional intervention. Thus, using a practical case taken from work with adolescents in the German FSJ programme, hand-in-hand with a young girl called Anja we trace the developmental and sociological aspects of adolescence in order to later address certain common points of art and psychosocial work. Art will hence be redefined as a transitional object allowing questions to be addressed relating to (self-) perception, attachment, communication and changes in conduct as the ultimate goal of professional action. Lastly, we note the limitations and risks of art-based intervention, in order to conclude with a final synopsis.

The "Art" of Criticism: Rubén Darío and his Unknown Chronicles of the 1895 Salon for "La Prensa"

With the impetus that has led recent studies on Latin American Modernism to a reevaluation of the sense of cultural fluxes from the modernity capitals to its peripheries –discarding categories such as “influence”, “exotism” and “ivory tower”, stereotypes that have clouded critical understanding of this aesthetics for decades- the present study intends to investigate a persistent practice of the main writers of the movement. This practice is modernist pictorial criticism, a genre that will be approached through the analysis of an unknown corpus: the seven chronicles Rubén Darío published in the journal La Prensa on occasion of the third art exposition of the Ateneo de Buenos Aires. Our hypothesis is that the rare creators of images portrayed by Darío by the end of 1895 work as a visual counterpoint of the eccentric writers’ biographical sketches that a year later will be part of the fundamental volume Los raros (1896). In this early “salon”, which we reproduce in its entirety, accompanied by explanatory notes, the leader of Modernism rehearses and consolidates his transcultural work with the universal tradition –now applied to the Salons (1845-1860) by Charles Baudelaire and to the monumental project by John Ruskin in Modern painters (1843-1860)- to legitimate, from another subgenre of Modernist criticism, a new figure of the critic, in dissent with the Enlightenment model of the writer.

The use of cues for attention in ancient Greek art: aspects that influence concentration in the work of art and its elements

The goal of this study is to identify cues for the cognitive process of attention in ancient Greek art, aiming to find confirmation of its possible use by ancient Greek audiences and artists. Evidence of cues that trigger attention’s psychological dispositions was searched through content analysis of image reproductions of ancient Greek sculpture and fine vase painting from the archaic to the Hellenistic period - ca. 7th -1st cent. BC. Through this analysis, it was possible to observe the presence of cues that trigger orientation to the work of art (i.e. amplification, contrast, emotional salience, simplification, symmetry), of a cue that triggers a disseminate attention to the parts of the work (i.e. distribution of elements) and of cues that activate selective attention to specific elements in the work of art (i.e. contrast of elements, salient color, central positioning of elements, composition regarding the flow of elements and significant objects). Results support the universality of those dispositions, probably connected with basic competencies that are hard-wired in the nervous system and in the cognitive processes.

Art, biology and technology. Interdisciplinary relations in the science lab

Bio art, understood as the convergence of the relations between art, biology and technology, constitutes a useful case study to discuss the meaning of interdisciplinarity in the artistic field. This paper explores different discourses around interdisciplinarity in order to challenge certain generic approaches for their ineffectiveness when assessing artistic practices. It is proposed that the analysis of interdisciplinarity must address the singular connections produced in the artistic practice itself, considering the impossibility of reducing the complexity of interdisciplinary dialogues into generic considerations. Taking bioart as a case study, different kinds of relationships between the artist and the lab are identified and analyzed, ranging from the use of the lab as a true atelier and as a resource for materials and techniques, to the rejection of the lab by proposing amateurism as an alternative. estrategias amateur, pasando por su utilización como fuente de técnicas y materiales.
