We consider a finite element approximation of the sixth order nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation ut = ?.( b(u)? 2u), where generically b(u) := |u|? for any given ? ? (0,?). In addition to showing well-posedness of our approximation, we prove convergence in space dimensions d ? 3. Furthermore an iterative scheme for solving the resulting nonlinear discrete system is analysed. Finally some numerical experiments in one and two space dimensions are presented.

We derive energy-norm a posteriori error bounds, using gradient recovery (ZZ) estimators to control the spatial error, for fully discrete schemes for the linear heat equation. This appears to be the rst completely rigorous derivation of ZZ estimators for fully discrete schemes for evolution problems, without any restrictive assumption on the timestep size. An essential tool for the analysis is the elliptic reconstruction technique. Our theoretical results are backed with extensive numerical experimentation aimed at (a) testing the practical sharpness and asymptotic behaviour of the error estimator against the error, and (b) deriving an adaptive method based on our estimators. An extra novelty provided is an implementation of a coarsening error "preindicator", with a complete implementation guide in ALBERTA in the appendix.

We use the elliptic reconstruction technique in combination with a duality approach to prove a posteriori error estimates for fully discrete backward Euler scheme for linear parabolic equations. As an application, we combine our result with the residual based estimators from the a posteriori estimation for elliptic problems to derive space-error indicators and thus a fully practical version of the estimators bounding the error in the $ \mathrm {L}_{\infty }(0,T;\mathrm {L}_2(\varOmega ))$ norm. These estimators, which are of optimal order, extend those introduced by Eriksson and Johnson in 1991 by taking into account the error induced by the mesh changes and allowing for a more flexible use of the elliptic estimators. For comparison with previous results we derive also an energy-based a posteriori estimate for the $ \mathrm {L}_{\infty }(0,T;\mathrm {L}_2(\varOmega ))$-error which simplifies a previous one given by Lakkis and Makridakis in 2006. We then compare both estimators (duality vs. energy) in practical situations and draw conclusions.

In this paper, we study the behavior of the solutions of nonlinear parabolic problems posed in a domain that degenerates into a line segment (thin domain) which has an oscillating boundary. We combine methods from linear homogenization theory for reticulated structures and from the theory on nonlinear dynamics of dissipative systems to obtain the limit problem for the elliptic and parabolic problems and analyze the convergence properties of the solutions and attractors of the evolutionary equations. In this paper we study the continuity of asymptotics of semilinear parabolic problems of the form u(t) - div(p(x)del u) + lambda u =f(u) in a bounded smooth domain ohm subset of R `` with Dirichlet boundary conditions when the diffusion coefficient p becomes large in a subregion ohm(0) which is interior to the physical domain ohm. We prove, under suitable assumptions, that the family of attractors behave upper and lower semicontinuously as the diffusion blows up in ohm(0). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In [H. Brezis, A. Friedman, Nonlinear parabolic equations involving measures as initial conditions, J. Math. Pure Appl. (9) (1983) 73-97.] Brezis and Friedman prove that certain nonlinear parabolic equations, with the delta-measure as initial data, have no solution. However in [J.F. Colombeau, M. Langlais, Generalized solutions of nonlinear parabolic equations with distributions as initial conditions, J. Math. Anal. Appl (1990) 186-196.] Colombeau and Langlais prove that these equations have a unique solution even if the delta-measure is substituted by any Colombeau generalized function of compact support. Here we generalize Colombeau and Langlais` result proving that we may take any generalized function as the initial data. Our approach relies on recent algebraic and topological developments of the theory of Colombeau generalized functions and results from [J. Aragona, Colombeau generalized functions on quasi-regular sets, Publ. Math. Debrecen (2006) 371-399.]. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two different concentrating mirrors have been constructed that resemble parabolic dish reflectors. Both mirrors are made of slightly curved strips of flat, bendable material. The strips of the most simplified mirror have only large-radius circles and straight lines as boundaries. The necessary equations for making the mirrors have been derived. Also a simple way to make a stiff, lightweight frame and support for the mirror strips has been developed. Models of the mirrors have been built and successfully used for cooking and baking. This report is an extended version of a paper to be published in Solar Energy that contains complete derivations of all mirror design equations.

In this work, doped AlGaAs/GaAs parabolic quantum wells (PQW) with different well widths (from 1000 angstrom up to 3000 angstrom) were investigated by means of photoluminescence (PL) measurements. In order to achieve the 2DEG inside the PQW Si delta doping is placed at both side of the well. We have observed that the thickness of this space layer plays a major rule on the characteristics of the 2DEG. It has to be thicker enough to prevent any diffusions of Si to the well and thin enough to allow electrons migration inside the well. From PL measurement, we have observed beside the intra well transitions, indirect transitions involving still trapped electron on the delta doping and holes inside the PQW. For the thinness sample, we have measured a well defined PL peak at low energy side of the GaAs bulk emission. With the increasing of the well thickness this peak intensity decreases and for the thickest sample it almost disappears. Our theoretical calculation indicated that carriers (electron and holes) are more placed at the center of the PQW. In this way, when the well thickness increases the distance between electrons on the delta doping and holes on the well also increases, it decreases the probability of occurrence of these indirect optical transitions. In this paper we prove that the spatial discretization of a one dimensional system of parabolic equations. with suitably small step size, contains exactly the same asymptotic dynamics as the continuous problem. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

Parabolic quantum wells (PQWs) have been studied by temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL). Two kind of samples have been studied. Concerning the undoped sample, the dominant luminescences were the bulk GaAs and the fundamental transition of the PQW. The evolution on temperature of the energy position of both PL emissions follows the well known Varshing formula. For the doped samples strong radiative recombination of the electron gas with photogenerated holes was observed. At low temperature strong Fermi level enhancement occurs in the luminescence as a result of the multi-electron-hole scattering, which is smear out increasing the temperature.
