DiplomityÃn aiheena oli tutkia case-yrityksen prosessikehitystä, prosessijohtamista sekä lähiverkkopalveluketjua prosessinäkÃkulman kannalta. Tutkimuksen päätavoitteina oli selvittää, kuinka lähiverkkopalveluketjun toimintaa voisi tehostaa, ja minkälaisia kertakustannuksia yhdestä keskiverotoimituksesta syntyy. Tavoitteina oli myÃs selvittää yrityksen prosessikehittämisen tila sekä minkälaisia prosessijohtamismalleja yrityksessä käytetään ja millä tavoin sen pääprosesseja johdetaan. Tutkimus oli case-tyyppinen, eli siinä tutkittiin yhden yrityksen toimintaa ja prosesseja. Teoreettinen pohja tutkimukselle luotiin käsittelemällä liiketoimintaprosesseihin liittyviä ydinmääritelmiä, erilaisia prosessijohtamismalleja ja liiketoimintaprosessien mittaamista. Tutkimuksen peruselementit tiedon hankintaan olivat kirjallisuus ja haastattelut. Lisäksi tutkimus pohjasi vahvasti tutkijan tekemiin omiin havaintoihin yrityksessä ja sen toimintaympäristÃssä. Tutkimuksen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa kartoitettiin lähiverkkopalveluketjun senhetkinen tilanne, analysoitiin palveluketjun sisältämiä prosesseja ja kirjattiin ylÃs havaitut ongelmakohdat. Haastatteluista kerättyjen tietojen perusteella laskettiin yhdestä keskivertolähiverkkotoimituksesta case-yritykselle syntyvät kertakustannukset. Tämän lisäksi analysoitiin yrityksen senhetkistä prosessijohtamis- ja prosessikehitystasoa sekä peilattiin niitä yrityksen tulevaisuuden prosessikehittämistoimiin. Lopuksi johtopäätÃksien kautta esitettiin kaksi toimintaehdotusta, joilla palveluketjun toimintaa voitaisiin parantaa. Ensimmäinen ehdotus oli radikaalimpi, ja siinä siirryttäisiin kokonaan pois palveluketjumallista tiimipohjaiseen malliin. Toisessa ehdotuksessa keskityttiin korjaamaan palveluketjun ongelmakohtia.

Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin Chris Argyriksen käsitettä puolustusrutiinit. Koska niiden tutkimus on jäänyt vähäiseksi, tyÃn tarkoitus oli selvittää, voidaanko kohdeorganisaatiossa osoittaa olevan käyttäytymismalleja, jotka viittaisivat puolustusrutiinien olemassaoloon. Teoriaosassa lukija johdateltiin aiheeseen selvittämällä, kuinka organisaatio on osa ympärÃivää maailmaa ja sitten, kuinka tärkeää oppiminen on yrityksen menestymiselle ja olemassaololle. Puolustusrutiinien teoriaa tutkittiin pääasiassa Chris Argyriksen materiaalin avulla. Tutkimus oli laadullinen puolistrukturoitu yksilÃhaastattelu valitussa kohdeyrityksessä. Empiriaosuuden alussa kerrottiin haastateltavista sekä kohdeyrityksestä ja tutkimuksen suorittamisesta. Lopuksi haastattelujen tulokset esiteltiin lukijalle. Tutkimuksen tuloksien mukaan kohdeorganisaatiossa voitiin havaita lukuisia tilanteita, joissa puolustusrutiinit vaikuttivat jopa hyvinkin voimakkaasti. Lisäksi eri organisaatiotasojen välillä havaittiin toisistaan poikkeavia näkemyksiä. Siksi organisaation jäsenet eivät pystyneet muodostamaan yhtenäistä käsitystä organisaation toiminnasta ja ongelmista. Tämä vaikeuttaa organisaation oppimista, ympäristÃn muutokseen reagointia ja lopulta yrityksen menestymistä. (Argyris 1996, 67)

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten organisaatioon sitoutuminen moniulotteisena käsitteenä ymmärretään yrityksen johtoryhmässä ja avainesimiesten kesken, kun tyÃpaikkana on risteilyvarustamo ja -laiva. Tutkimuksen empiirisen aineiston muodostaa viisi haastattelua laivan palveluosastoilta sekä yrityksen johtoryhmän haastattelut. Teoriaosuudessa on keskitytty kuvailemaan sitoutumiseen vaikuttavia tekijÃitä ottaen huomioon kohdeorganisaation toimintaympäristÃ. Tässä tutkimuksessa organisaatiositoutuminen ymmärretään yksilÃn henkilÃkohtaisten tarpeiden, tunnepitoisen kiinnittymisen ja tyÃyhteisÃn vaikutuksen yhteenliittymänä. Tutkimus on laadullinen ja aineiston keräystapana on käytetty pääasiallisesti teemahaastattelua. Aineistoa on täydennetty muutamalla avoimella sähkÃpostikyselyllä. Analysointi tapahtui teemoittelun avulla, josta johtopäätÃksiin edettiin induktiivisesti. Tutkimustulosten perusteella voidaan todeta, että organisaatiositoutuminen kohdeyrityksessä on ymmärretty lähes samalla tavalla sekä johtoryhmän että esimiesten kesken. Huomioon otettavia aiheita sitouttamista silmällä pitäen ovat yrityksen arvojen ja tavoitteiden merkitys läpi koko sitoutumisprosessin.

This research focuses on the career experiences of women managers in the IT industry in China and Finland, two countries with different cultures, policies, size of population, and social and economic structures regarding work-life support and equal opportunities. The object of this research is to present a cross-cultural comparison of womenâs career experiences and how women themselves understand and account for their careers. The study explores how the macro and the micro levels of cultural and social processes become manifested in the lives of individual women. The main argument in this thesis is that culture plays a crucial role in making sense of womenâs career experiences, although its role should be understood through its interrelationship with other social processes, e.g., institutional relations, social policies, industrial structures and organizations, as well as globalization. The interrelationship of a series of cultural and social processes affects individualsâ attitudes to, and arrangement and organization of, their work and family lives. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part introduces the research topic and discusses the overall results. The second part comprises five research papers. The main research question of the study is: How do cultural and social processes affect the experiences of women managers? Quantitative and qualitative research methods, which include in-depth interviews, Q-methodology, interpretive analysis, and questionnaires, are used in the study. The main theoretical background is culturally sensitive career theory and the theory of individual differences. The results of this study are viewed through a feminist lens. The research methodology applied allows new explorations on how demographic factors, work experiences, lifestyle issues, and organizational cultures can jointly affect womenâs managerial careers. The sample group used in the research is 42 women managers working in IT companies in China (21) and Finland (21). The results of the study illustrate the impact of history, tradition, culture, institutional relations, social politics, industry and organizations, and globalization on the careers of women managers. It is claimed that the role of culture â cultural norms within nations and organizations â is of great importance in the relationship of gender and work. Womenâs managerial careers are affected by multiple factors (personal, social and cultural) reflecting national and inter-individual differences. The results of the study contribute to research on careers, adding particularly to the literature on gender, work and culture, and offering a complex and holistic perspective for a richer understanding of pluralism and global diversity. The results of the study indicate how old and new career perspectives are evidenced in women managers in the IT industry. The research further contributes to an understanding of womenâs managerial careers from a cross-culture perspective. In addition, the study contributes to the literature on culture and extends understanding of Hofstedeâs work. Further, most traditional career theories do not perceive the importance of culture in determining an individualâs career experience and this study richens understanding of women managersâ careers and has considerable implications for international human resource management. The results of this study emphasize the need, when discussing women managersâ careers, to understand the ways by which gendering is produced rather than merely examining gender differences. It is argued that the meaning of self-knowledge is critical. Further, the environment where the careers under study develop differs greatly; China and Finland are very different â culturally, historically and socially. The findings of this study should, therefore, be understood as a holistic, specific, and contextually-bound.

Resonance energies are shown to be quasithermodynamic in character. Hence, they are generally unsuitable as bases for anticipating kinetic stabilities. Examples are provided, leading to the conclusion that those who intend the word 'aromatic' to mean chemically unreactive, need to carry out full Hückel calculations in order to rank hydrocarbons using the frontier orbital energies.

This article examines the networks within the research groups where Spanish PhD students are pursuing their doctorate. Capó et al. (2007) used quantitative data to predict PhD studentsâ publishing performance from their background, attitudes, supervisorsâ performance and research group networks. Variables related to the research group network had a negligible explanatory power on student performance once the remaining variables had been accounted for. In this article, a qualitative follow up of the same students is carried out using extreme case sampling and inï­depth interviews. The qualitative research shows networking as important for students. Out of the 115 aspects that students mention in the interviews as relevant to publishing in the qualitative research, 92 have to do with their supervisors, their research group or their network as a whole. Similarly, out of the 50 hindrances mentioned, 20 have to do with the networks or relations. The most commonly mentioned network-related topics are research group members pushing PhD students to publish, meeting researchers outside the research group, existence of other PhD students in the group, help with the PhD from group members, supervisorâs interest in the thesis, the possibility of discussing with experts on the PhDâs topic and frequent contact with the supervisor and research group members. Some of these characteristics were not, however, measured in the conventional quantitative social network survey

Systems suppliers are focal actors in mechanical engineering supply chains, in between general contractors and component suppliers. This research concentrates on the systems suppliersâ competitive flexibility, as a competitive advantage that the systems supplier gains from independence from the competitive forces of the market. The aim is to study the roles that power, dependence relations, social capital, and interorganizational learning have on the competitive flexibility. Research on this particular theme is scarce thus far. The research method applied here is the inductive multiple case study. Interviews from four case companies were used as main source of the qualitative data. The literature review presents previous literature on subcontracting, supply chain flexibility, supply chain relationships, social capital and interorganizational learning. The result of this study are seven propositions and consequently a model on the effects that the dominance of sales of few customers, power of competitors, significance of the manufactured system in the end product, professionalism in procurement and the significance of brand products in the business have on the competitive flexibility. These relationships are moderated by either social capital or interorganizational learning. The main results obtained from this study revolve around social capital and interorganizational learning, which have beneficial effects on systems suppliersâ competitive flexibility, by moderating the effects of other constructs of the model. Further research on this topic should include quantitative research to provide the extent to which the results can be reliably generalized. Also each construct of the model gives possible focus for more thorough research.

TyÃn tavoitteena oli koota Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston tuotantotalouden osaston opetuksen kehittämisen historiatiedot ja henkilÃstÃn mielipide vuosien 2000â2008 aikana tehdystä kehittämistyÃstä organisaation jatkokehittämistä ja viestintää varten. TyÃn aihepiiri käsittelee organisaation kehittämistä (kehittymistä) yksilÃn ja organisaation oppimisen näkÃkulmasta. Historiatiedot on kerätty osaston henkilÃkunnalta ja saaduista dokumenteista. HenkilÃstÃn palautteen kerääminen kehittämistyÃstä toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena suorittamalla 32 henkilÃkohtaista haastattelua. Tutkimuksen keskeisimmäksi tulokseksi on saatu onnistuneen kehittämisen malli, jossa yksilÃn ja organisaation kehittymiseen vaikuttavat vahvasti yksilÃtasolla tarve ja konkreettinen päämäärä. Koko organisaatiossa on lisäksi huomioitava muina osina systematiikka, yhteisÃllisyys ja tietämyksen (osaamisen) hallinta.

<b>Succestul players of the university game? A study about the short duration of masterâs degree studies and graduating at a young age</b> The duration of studies has long been a topic of conversation. It was first mentioned in 1883, but the discussion has been quite active and topical for the last fifty years. During that time, there have been numerous committees, working groups for the Ministry of Education, and revisions to the structure of the masterâs degree program. All of these have focused on lowering the duration of studies as well as the age at which students graduate. These two factors have been regarded as indicators of efficiency. Achieving these goals is seen to promote the successful transition from studies to work. In addition, the greater time that people spend working is thought to help with the fiscal burden of an aging population. The reasons for prolonged study seem to be: students working during the course of their studies; the actual workload of the studies, which sometimes does not correlate with the calculated workload; problems with the studentsâ course selections and with their financial support from the government; issues in teaching; and problems with university funding. This study focuses on studentsâ study experiences, their progress, and the university itself. Of particular interest was the studentsâ use of different resourcesâcultural, social, and economical capital. Participants in the study had graduated from the University of Turku between the years of 1999 and 2001 and were divided into two groups: prompt graduates, those who graduated among the fastest 18th percent in their faculty; and those who graduated at a slower pace. A survey (N=499) and interviews (N=69) were among the methods used, along with a compilation of statistics on the studentsâ duration of studies, the number of modules studied, and marks obtained. Bourdieuâs theory about fields and the games people play in those fields formed the theoretical background of this study. The university was seen to form a playing field with historically and politically changeable rules. The students playing in this field were considered to possess different economical, social, and cultural resources, which they use more or less successfully. Some of the strategies used by students result in gra¬duating at a young age and/or a short duration of study; some do not. This study divided the age of graduation and the duration of study into separate games. This allowed the study to determine the relationship between these two factors and to examine their similarities and differences. The study also focused on the idea of success. Short duration of studies and a young graduation age can be considered, be some, an indication of success in navigating the university field. This study aimed to see if this concept held true or whether these seeming indicators of success have negative side effects. The main result of this study is that, even though the games of duration and age have similarities, they are sufficiently diverse to be considered separate games, which need different resources. To graduate with a short duration of studies, it is important for a student to successfully view and navigate the university field, tailoring oneâs studies and extracurricular activities to suit the individual. In the game of youth, the background of the student seemed to be of greater importance. The youngest graduates had spent more time with their parents, who also had higher educational qualifications. They also had higher achievement in their previous studies. This seems to indicate that their background allowed them to assimilate a better understanding of the school and university fields and that playing the university game was natural for them. As for the aspect of success, it seems that there are many ways to define the term. Youth on graduation and short duration of studies can be seen as two indicators of success. Both revealed negative and positive outcomes, even though short duration of studies seemed more often to be connected with positive outcomes. However, it seems that the best indicator for success is the way in which students organize study into their lives to support and suit their needs and abilities to realize a meaningful life and a successful entry into the field of work.

Aquesta recerca té per finalitat aproximar-se a la percepció que tenen les víctimes de violència masclista del tracte que reben dels diferents operadors en seu judicial, i mostrar com aquestes actuacions les han afectat no només a nivell personal, sinó també a nivell processal. Lâobjectiu principal és copsar lâexperiència de les dones víctimes de violència de gènere en referència al seu pas pels jutjats especialitzats de Catalunya. Per la consecució de lâobjectiu sâha treballat, dâuna banda, amb la revisió i actualització teòrica i contextual del tema dâinvestigació i, per lâaltra i principalment, amb la realització de més de 40 entrevistes als diferents operadors judicials i a dones víctimes de violència masclista i a entitats que treballen amb elles. Els resultats ens demostren que existeixen múltiples mancances en lâabordatge de la violència masclista als jutjats, que es reflecteixen en temes com: la manca dâinformació, la valoració del risc, lâexistència de mites i prejudicis vers les dones, la manca de formació, ... Aquestes mancances són generadores de lâanomenada victimització secundària. La situació descrita posa de manifest la necessitat de fer un veritable abordatge dels problemes detectats per tal de fer realment efectiva i eficient la lluita contra la violència masclista sobre les dones a seu judicial.

Little research has been conducted to guide the management of marketing variables, such as pricing, in systems business context. Furthermore, given that international partnering has become a popular mode of operation for SMEs, the objective of the current thesis was to explore the scantly researched topic of managing the pricing of integrated solutions in an export partnership. Specifically, the thesis synthesizes literature findings from the three areas of export pricing, systems business, and export partnerships. The empirical section of the study consists of a qualitative single-case study of a Finnish systems integrator that has recently launched its export operations. Primary data was collected by conducting four interviews of the case companyâs managers and by organizing one group interview session. The study findings indicate that a systems integratorâs pricing strategy in an export partnership can be very multidimensional and dependant on international pricing environment and partner characteristics, that an export partnership appears to have unique implications on a systems integratorâs pricing process, and that customer value âbased pricing strategies might be particularly suited to pricing integrated solutions.

This article outlines a procedure that was used to develop a written test for evaluating the conceptual knowledge of chemical equilibrium constant among university students. The concepts in the subject matter were carefully defined through propositional statements. Students' understanding of the topic was determined through interviews. These data were used to produce nine multiple choice questions. Each question was designed to identify misconceptions related to the chemical equilibrium constant. The test was evaluated by foure associate professors and was administred to a total of 196 spanish university students. This test has a Cronbach's alpha reliability of 0.63 and its content validity values ranged from 3.7 to 5.

In knowledge-intensive economy an effective knowledge transfer is a part of the firmâs strategy to achieve a competitive advantage in the market. Knowledge transfer related to a variety of mechanisms depends on the nature of knowledge and context. The topic is, however, very little empirical studied and there is a research gap in scientific literature. This study examined and analyzed external knowledge transfer mechanisms in service business and especially in the context of acquisitions. The aim was to find out what kind of mechanisms was used when the buyer began to transfer data e.g. their own agendas and practices to the purchased units. Another major research goal was to identify the critical factors which contributed to knowledge transfer through different mechanisms. The study was conducted as a multiple-case study in a consultative service business company, in its four business units acquired by acquisition, in various parts of the country. The empirical part of the study was carried out as focus group interviews in each unit, and the data were analyzed using qualitative methods. The main findings of this study were firstly the nine different knowledge transfer mechanisms in service business acquisition: acquisition management team as an initiator, unit manager as a translator, formal training, self-directed learning, rooming-in, IT systems implementation, customer relationship management, codified database and ecommunication. The used mechanisms brought up several aspects as giving the face to changing, security of receiving right knowledge and correctly interpreted we-ness atmosphere, and orientation to use more consultative touch with customers. The study pointed out seven critical factors contributed to different mechanisms: absorption, motivation, organizational learning, social interaction, trust, interpretation and time resource. The two last mentioned were new findings compared to previous studies. Each of the mechanisms and the related critical factors contributed in different ways to the activity in different units after the acquisition. The role of knowledge management strategy was the most significant managerial contribution of the study. Phenomenon is not recognized enough although it is strongly linked in knowledge based companies. The recognition would help to develop a better understanding of the business through acquisitions, especially in situations such as where two different knowledge strategies combines in new common company.

In the present dissertation, multilingual thesauri were approached as cultural products and the focus was twofold: On the empirical level the focus was placed on the translatability of certain British-English social science indexing terms into the Finnish language and culture at a concept, a term and an indexing term level. On the theoretical level the focus was placed on the aim of translation and on the concept of equivalence. In accordance with modern communicative and dynamic translation theories the interest was on the human dimension. The study is qualitative. In this study, equivalence was understood in a similar way to how dynamic, functional equivalence is commonly understood in translation studies. Translating was seen as a decision-making process, where a translator often has different kinds of possibilities to choose in order to fulfil the function of the translation. Accordingly, and as a starting point for the construction of the empirical part, the function of the source text was considered to be the same or similar to the function of the target text, that is, a functional thesaurus both in source and target context. Further, the study approached the challenges of multilingual thesaurus construction from the perspectives of semantics and pragmatics. In semantic analysis the focus was on what the words conventionally mean and in pragmatics on the â˜invisibleâ meaning - or how we recognise what is meant even when it is not actually said (or written). Languages and ideas expressed by languages are created mainly in accordance with expressional needs of the surrounding culture and thesauri were considered to reflect several subcultures and consequently the discourses which represent them. The research material consisted of different kinds of potential discourses: dictionaries, database records, and thesauri, Finnish versus British social science researches, Finnish versus British indexers, simulated indexing tasks with five articles and Finnish versus British thesaurus constructors. In practice, the professional background of the two last mentioned groups was rather similar. It became even more clear that all the material types had their own characteristics, although naturally not entirely separate from each other. It is further noteworthy that the different types and origins of research material were not used to represent true comparison pairs, and that the aim of triangulation of methods and material was to gain a holistic view. The general research questions were: 1. Can differences be found between Finnish and British discourses regarding family roles as thesaurus terms, and if so, what kinds of differences and which are the implications for multilingual thesaurus construction? 2. What is the pragmatic indexing term equivalence? The first question studied how the same topic (family roles) was represented in different contexts and by different users, and further focused on how the possible differences were handled in multilingual thesaurus construction. The second question was based on findings of the previous one, and answered to the final question as to what kinds of factors should be considered when defining translation equivalence in multilingual thesaurus construction. The study used multiple cases and several data collection and analysis methods aiming at theoretical replication and complementarity. The empirical material and analysis consisted of focused interviews (with Finnish and British social scientists, thesaurus constructors and indexers), simulated indexing tasks with Finnish and British indexers, semantic component analysis of dictionary definitions and translations, coword analysis and datasets retrieved in databases, and discourse analysis of thesauri. As a terminological starting point a topic and case family roles was selected. The results were clear: 1) It was possible to identify different discourses. There also existed subdiscourses. For example within the group of social scientists the orientation to qualitative versus quantitative research had an impact on the way they reacted to the studied words and discourses, and indexers placed more emphasis on the information seekers whereas thesaurus constructors approached the construction problems from a more material based solution. The differences between the different specialist groups i.e. the social scientists, the indexers and the thesaurus constructors were often greater than between the different geo-cultural groups i.e. Finnish versus British. The differences occurred as a result of different translation aims, diverging expectations for multilingual thesauri and variety of practices. For multilingual thesaurus construction this means severe challenges. The clearly ambiguous concept of multilingual thesaurus as well as different construction and translation strategies should be considered more precisely in order to shed light on focus and equivalence types, which are clearly not self-evident. The research also revealed the close connection between the aims of multilingual thesauri and the pragmatic indexing term equivalence. 2) The pragmatic indexing term equivalence is very much context-depended. Although thesaurus term equivalence is defined and standardised in the field of library and information science (LIS), it is not understood in one established way and the current LIS tools are inadequate to provide enough analytical tools for both constructing and studying different kinds of multilingual thesauri as well as their indexing term equivalence. The tools provided in translation science were more practical and theoretical, and especially the division of different meanings of a word provided a useful tool in analysing the pragmatic equivalence, which often differs from the ideal model represented in thesaurus construction literature. The study thus showed that the variety of different discourses should be acknowledged, there is a need for operationalisation of new types of multilingual thesauri, and the factors influencing pragmatic indexing term equivalence should be discussed more precisely than is traditionally done.

The aim of this study is to explore how a new concept appears inscientific discussion and research, how it diffuses to other fields and out of the scientific communities, and how the networks are formed around the concept. Text and terminology take the interest of a reader in the digital environment. Texts create networks where the terminology used is dependent on the ideas, viewsand paradigms of the field. This study is based mainly on bibliographic data. Materials for bibliometric studies have been collected from different databases. The databases are also evaluated and their quality and coverage are discussed. The thesauri of those databases that have been selected for a more in depth study have also been evaluated. The material selected has been used to study how long and in which ways an innovative publication, which can be seen as a milestone in a specific field, influences the research. The concept that has been chosen as a topic for this research is Social Capital, because it has been a popular concept in different scientific fields as well as in everyday speech and the media. It seemed to be a `fashion concept´ that appeared in different situations at the Millennium. The growth and diffusion of social capital publications has been studied. The terms connected with social capital in different fields and different stages of the development have also been analyzed. The methods that have been used in this study are growth and diffusion analysis, content analysis, citation analysis, coword analysis and cocitation analysis. One method that can be used tounderstand and to interpret results of these bibliometric studies is to interview some key persons, who are known to have a gatekeeper position in the diffusion of the concept. Thematic interviews with some Finnish researchers and specialists that have influenced the diffusion of social capital into Finnish scientificand social discussions provide background information. iv The Milestone Publications on social capital have been chosen and studied. They give answers to the question "What is Social Capital?" By comparing citations to Milestone Publications with the growth of all social capital publications in a database, we can drawconclusions about the point at which social capital became generally approved `tacit knowledge´. The contribution of the present study lies foremost in understanding the development of network structures around a new concept that has diffused in scientific communities and also outside them. The network means both networks of researchers, networks of publications and networks of concepts that describe the research field. The emphasis has been on the digital environment and onthe socalled information society that we are now living in, but in this transitional stage, the printed publications are still important and widely used in social sciences and humanities. The network formation is affected by social relations and informal contacts that push new ideas. This study also gives new information about using different research methods, like bibliometric methods supported by interviews and content analyses. It is evident that interpretation of bibliometric maps presupposes qualitative information and understanding of the phenomena under study.
