Development of IT Service Management in a Large International Company

The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to examine the IT Service Management (ITSM) capabilities of a large international company and develop a design for the IT Service Management of the company. The thesis consists of two parts: a literature review and a case study. The first part is the literature review. It examines different aspects of IT Service Management. The purpose of the literature review is to increase the credibility of the case study. In the case study, the IT Service Management of a large industrial company is assessed, and an improved design for IT Service Management is created. The services are limited to common IT services, and management is limited to operative management. To assess and develop the case company’s IT Service Management, the IT organization and its ITSM capabilities are analyzed, and on the basis of the analyses, an improved IT Service Management model is created. As a result of the analyses, it was found out that the management of the IT organization is function-oriented. Therefore, the organization needs a management model that breaks the functional borders and brings services to the center of management. The designed model aspires to achieve this by defining IT services and modeling management processes from the service perspective.

Business opportunities in power sector of Ukraine : focus small-scale hydro and wind power sectors

In the last few years, the Ukrainian investment market has constantly shown strong performance and significant growth. This is primarily due to the investment attractiveness of Ukraine. From the perspective of investments in energy sector, Ukraine can be described as a country providing significant number of opportunities to multiply invested funds. But there are numbers of risks which hamper large investments. The work objective was to discover opportunities in small-scale hydropower and wind power sectors of Ukraine and more importantly to prove economic expediency of such investments. Thesis covers major of issues, concerning entering the Ukrainian power market as a foreign investor. It provides basic information about the structure of power market, the state of renewables sector in Ukraine, development of power sector in the regions, functioning of Wholesale Electricity Market, formation of electricity prices, possibilities for implementing joint Implementation mechanism, while the most attention, nevertheless, is concentrated on the opportunities in small-scale hydro and wind power sectors. Theoretical part of the study disclosed that Crimea peninsula has perfect wind conditions and could be a prospective area for wind project development. Investment analysis revealed that project profits will be excellent if green tariff for renewable energy is adopted. By the moment uncertainties about green law adoption bring additional risk to the projects and complicate any investment decision.

Model-based study of a chemical-looping combustion process

Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a novel combustion technology with inherent separation of the greenhouse gas CO2. The technique typically employs a dual fluidized bed system where a metal oxide is used as a solid oxygen carrier that transfers the oxygen from combustion air to the fuel. The oxygen carrier is looping between the air reactor, where it is oxidized by the air, and the fuel reactor, where it is reduced by the fuel. Hence, air is not mixed with the fuel, and outgoing CO2 does not become diluted by the nitrogen, which gives a possibility to collect the CO2 from the flue gases after the water vapor is condensed. CLC is being proposed as a promising and energy efficient carbon capture technology, since it can achieve both an increase in power station efficiency simultaneously with low energy penalty from the carbon capture. The outcome of a comprehensive literature study concerning the current status of CLC development is presented in this thesis. Also, a steady state model of the CLC process, based on the conservation equations of mass and energy, was developed. The model was used to determine the process conditions and to calculate the reactor dimensions of a 100 MWth CLC system with bunsenite (NiO) as oxygen carrier and methane (CH4) as fuel. This study has been made in Oxygen Carriers and Their Industrial Applications research project (2008 – 2011), funded by the Tekes – Functional Material program. Kuormitustestausvälineen valinta Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 – toteutuksessa

Kuormitustestaus on osa web-sovellusten kehitystä ja käyttöönottoa. Sillä varmistetaan sovellusten toimivuus ennalta määrätyn kuorman alla. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) on palvelintuote nykyaikaisten web-sovellusten luontiin ja ylläpitoon. Työssä vertaillaan kahta eri uormitustestaustyökalua: SilkPerformer 2008 ja Visual Studio Team System 2008 Test Edition ja valitaan MOSS – web-sovelluksille paremmin sopiva työkalu. Työssä vertaillaan työkaluja niiden ominaisuuksien perusteella sekä suorittamalla kuormitustestausta testausta varten luodulle MOSS – web-sovellukselle. Vaikuttavien tekijöiden perusteella työkaluja arvioidaan ja tämän perusteella saadaan tulos vertailulle. Työn tuloksena Visual Studio Team System 2008 Test Edition sopii paremmin MOSS – web-sovelluksen kuormitustestausvälineeksi. Vertailussa kuitenkin havaittiin, että työkalut ovat melko tasavertaisia, ja käytännön tilanteesta riippuu, kumpi sopii paremmin. Tämä työ auttaa valinnan teossa.

Elinkaariarvioinnin hyödyntäminen pumpputehtaan ympäristötoimenpiteiden tunnistamisessa

Voimistuvan kasvihuoneilmiön myötä kiinnostus hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentämiseen on lisääntynyt. Ympäristöteknologian tavoitteena on hidastaa tämän ilmiön haitallisia vaikutuksia maailmanlaajuisesti, kansallisesti sekä yritystasolla. Yrityksillä on yhä suurempi paine valmistaa tuotteita ympäristöä vähemmän kuormittavasti. Työn tavoitteena on tarkastella elinkaariarvioinnin käytettävyyttä, kun halutaan tunnistaa pumpputehtaan mahdollisuuksia pienentää tuotteidensa valmistuksen ympäristönkuormittavuutta. Työssä pyritään myös selvittämään ne pumpun valmistuksen prosessit, jotka tuottavat eniten kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä. Tarkastelussa on keskitytty lähinnä hiilidioksidipäästöjen laskentaan. Työssä on käytetty elinkaariarvioinnin menetelmää ja työ noudattaa SFS ISO 14040 ja 14044 standardia. Elinkaariarviointi on hyväksi havaittu keino tunnistaa ne tuotteen tai palvelun yksikköprosessit, joilla on suurin vaikutus ympäristöön. Tutkimuksessa luotiin elinkaariarviointi pumppulaitoksen vuosittain tuottamille pumpuille. Samalla toteutettiin elinkaariarviointiin Excel-malli, jolla voidaan arvioida yksittäisten pumppujen valmistuksen hiilidioksidipäästöt. Tulosten pohjalta on tehty myös joitakin ehdotuksia pumpun valmistuksen hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentämiseksi. Laskennassa käytetty aineisto kerättiin kirjallisuudesta, pumppulaitoksen alihankkijoilta sekä julkaistuista elinkaariarvioinneista vuoden 2008 kesän aikana. Työssä on osoitettu, että elinkaariarviointia voidaan hyödyntää tunnistettaessa pumpputehtaan ympäristötoimenpiteitä. Saatujen tulosten luotettavuus on kuitenkin riippuvainen käytettävissä olevista resursseista sekä lähtötietojen tarkkuudesta. Erityisesti valimoiden ilmoittamat energiankulutusmäärät vaikuttavat tulosten tarkkuuteen. Tarkempien tulosten saaminen edellyttäisi muun muassa tehtaan alihankkijoiden parempaa tietoisuutta omasta energiankulutuksestaan.

Defining a Performance Measurement System for Technology Marketing Team by Using the Balanced Scorecard Method

This thesis was produced for the Technology Marketing unit at the Nokia Research Center. Technology marketing was a new function at Nokia Research Center, and needed an established framework with the capacity to take into account multiple aspects for measuring the team performance. Technology marketing functions had existed in other parts of Nokia, yet no single method had been agreed upon for measuring their performance. The purpose of this study was to develop a performance measurement system for Nokia Research Center Technology Marketing. The target was that Nokia Research Center Technology Marketing had a framework for separate metrics; including benchmarking for starting level and target values in the future planning (numeric values were kept confidential within the company). As a result of this research, the Balanced Scorecard model of Kaplan and Norton, was chosen for the performance measurement system for Nokia Research Center Technology Marketing. This research selected the indicators, which were utilized in the chosen performance measurement system. Furthermore, performance measurement system was defined to guide the Head of Marketing in managing Nokia Research Center Technology Marketing team. During the research process the team mission, vision, strategy and critical success factors were outlined.

Henkilöstöresurssien optimointi ja hallinta sataman operaattoriyhtiössä

Työn tavoitteena on selvittää erilaisten työaikamallien ja henkilöstön määrän vaikutuksia Finnsteven henkilöstökustannuksiin ja ylitöiden määrään. Selvitystyö toteutetaan simuloimalla vaihtoehtoisia työaikamalleja ja henkilöstömääriä tilastollisten menetelmien avulla. Työn toisena tavoitteena on ehdottaa yritykselle toimintatapaa suorittaa lopullinen henkilöstöresurssien optimointi. Työn teoriaosuudessa esitellään aluksi yritystä ja sen toimintaympäristöä. Tämän jälkeen tarkastellaan nykyisen TE-sopimuksen mahdollistamia työaikamalleja. Seuraavaksi perustellaan käytettävät tilastolliset menetelmät ja tiedonkeruumenetelmät. Edetessään työ syventyy tarkastelemaan yrityksen tekemän työn kohdentumista aikatyöhön ja ylityöhön sekä viikonpäiville että työvuoroille. Lopuksi kuvataan työn optimoinnissa käytetty logiikka, analysoidaan saatuja tuloksia ja esitellään optimointityökalun toteutussuunnitelma. Diplomityössä tehdyn selvityksen mukaan satamatyössä tehdään nykyisellään erittäin paljon ylitöitä. Siten työaikamallien optimointi on perusteltua. Optimoinnilla saavutettavat potentiaaliset kustannussäästöt ovat erittäin huomattavia. Lopullinen optimointi on haastava tehtävä, jota henkilöstöhallinto ei pysty ratkaisemaan pelkkään kokemukseensa luottaen. Tuotannonsuunnittelun avuksi tarvitaan täten työkalu, joka palvelee paitsi mallien luontia, toimii suunnittelun apuna jatkossakin.

Pienyritysten verkostoitumisen mahdollisuudet ja haasteet

Useimmille pienyrityksille verkostoituminen kuuluu keskeisenä osana liiketoimintaan, sillä verkostoitumisesta saatavat hyödyt ovat juuri pienyritykselle merkittävät. Ongelmiakin verkostoitumisessa esiintyy ja pienyritysten erityispiirteet tuovat oman haasteensa strategisen yhteistyön muodostamiseen. Tämä työ käsittelee pienyritysten verkostoitumista sekä siinä esiintyviä mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita. Työssä perehdytään pienyritysten erityispiirteisiin, sillä ne vaikuttavat keskeisesti verkostoitumiseen sekä erityisesti sen haasteellisuuteen. Työssä käsitellään myös yleisesti verkostoitumista, sen rakennetta ja rooleja, edellytyksiä verkoston toimivuudelle ja verkostoitumisen tuomia mahdollisuuksia ja ongelmia yritykselle. Näitä työn teoriaosuuksia peilataan tämän jälkeen pienyritysten verkostoitumiseen, jonka mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita analysoidaan erilaisten verkostoitumistapojen kautta. Merkittävimmiksi pienyritysten verkostoitumisen mahdollisuuksiksi havaittiin omaan ydinosaamiseen keskittymisestä saatavat kustannusedut, tehokkuuden ja joustavuuden lisääntyminen sekä yhteistyön kautta oppiminen ja informaation vaihtaminen. Haasteiksi pienyrityksille verkostoitumisessa osoittautuivat luottamuksen muodostaminen sopivan yhteistyökumppanin kanssa sekä pelko riippuvuudesta ja tärkeän tiedon menettämisestä.

Groupware and Workflow Tools - A Case study of SAP Business Workflow Supporting System Integration in a Global Telecommunication Company

Workflow management systems aim at the controlled execution of complex application processes in distributed and heterogeneous environments. These systems will shape the structure of information systems in business and non-business environments. E business and system integration is a fertile soil for WF and groupware tools. This thesis aims to study WF and groupware tools in order to gather in house knowledge of WF to better utilize WF solutions in future, and to focus on SAP Business Workflow in order to find a global solution for Application Link Enabling support for system integration. Piloting this solution in Nokia collects the experience of SAP R/3 WF tool for other development projects in future. The literary part of this study will guide to the world of business process automation providing a general description of the history, use and potentials of WF & groupware software. The empirical part of this study begins with the background of the case study describing the IT environment initiating the case by introducing SAP R/3 in Nokia, the communication technique in use and WF tool. Case study is focused in one solution with SAP Business Workflow. This study provides a concept to monitor communication between ERP systems and to increase the quality of system integration. Case study describes a way create support model for ALE/EDI interfaces. Support model includes monitoring organization and the workflow processes to solve the most common IDoc related errors.

Mikkelin seudun teknologiayritysten kilpailukyvyn parantaminen verkostoitumisen avulla

Diplomityön tavoitteena on parantaa Mikkelin seudun teknologiayritysten kilpailukykyä verkostoitumisen avulla. Lisäksi tavoitteena on toteuttaa konkreettinen verkostoitumisprosessi ja luoda malli verkostoitumishankkeen toteuttamiseksi. Työ koostuu verkostoitumiseen liittyvästä kirjallisuuskatsauksesta ja työn ohessa toteutetuista käytännön toimenpiteistä. Kohderyhmäksi valittuihin puutuoteteollisuuden kone- ja laitevalmistajiin on perehdytty haastattelujen ja arvojärjestelmäanalyysin perusteella. Yrityksiltä on lisäksi haastattelujen yhteydessä kerätty verkostoitumisaloitteita, joiden perusteella on tehty tarvittavia jatkotoimenpiteitä. Työn tuloksena on luotu kuvaus kohdeyritysten arvojärjestelmästä Mikkelin seudulla ja edesautettu kolmen verkostoitumisprosessien käynnistymistä. Lisäksi kokemusten ja havaintojen perusteella on luotu verkostoitumismalli alueellisen kehittäjäorganisaation käyttöön.

Meesauunin vaihtoehtoiset polttoaineet

Työ käsittelee meesauunin vaihtoehtoisia polttoaineita. Työssä pohditaan lyhyesti syitä vaihtoehtoisiin polttoaineisiin siirtymiselle, sekä esitellään meesauunin periaatteellinen toiminta ja tekniikka. Työssä on keskitytty esittelemään tämän hetken kilpailukykyisimmät meesauunin vaihtoehtoiset polttoaineet.

Teollisuuden suunnittelupalveluiden hankinta ja valintakriteerit sekä palvelutarjonnan suuntaaminen

Tavoitteena oli selvittää pohjoissuomalaisen teollisuuden suunnittelu- ja konsultointipalvelujen hankintaa ja valintaa ohjaavia kriteereitä. Kriteerien tunteminen antaa palveluntarjoajille paremmat lähtökohdat oman toiminnan ohjaamisessa. Samalla työssä tutkittiin palveluntarjoajien tietämystä asiakkaidensa hankintatoimen taustalla vaikuttavista seikoista. Työn tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää palvelun-tarjoajien, työn tilaajan ja teollisuuden asiakkaiden toiminnassa. Työ aloitettiin tutustumalla asiantuntijapalveluiden markkinoinnin ja hankinnan teoriaan. Teoriassa tutustuttiin myös teknisen suunnittelun- ja konsultoinnin toimi-alaan. Tämän jälkeen haastateltiin kymmenen teollisuuden asiakasyritystä ja viisi palveluntarjoajayritystä. Näiden haastatteluiden perusteella voitiin tarkentaa suunnittelu- ja konsultoinnin erikoispiirteitä ja asiantuntijapalveluiden markkinoinnin ja hankintatoimen teoriaa. Tulosten perusteella asiantuntijapalveluiden hankintatoimi on hyvin organisoitua isoimpien yritysten tai yksiköiden kohdalla. Pienempien yritysten resurssit, vuosittainen tarve ja kokemus ohjaavat hankintatoimintaa. Myös kriteerit ovat yrityksen kokoon nähden muuttuvat. Isommat hankkijat arvostavat henkilöstöä, heidän referenssejään ja osaamistaan. Pienemmät arvostavat edellisten lisäksi vastuunottoa, sitoutumista ja riskienhallintaa. Henkilökohtainen myyntityö nähtiin tärkeänä. Suunnittelutoimistojen tietämys hankintatoimesta ja valintakriteereistä oli vaihtelevaa, mutta pääasiassa keskinkertaista.

Designing features for supporting social interactions in online communities

This Master's thesis studies the development of interaction and socialization in online communities. A large number of online communities fade away even before they really get started. In many occasions the reason is that the community does not give anything new, or even if they do, the delivery does not satisfy the users. In this thesis guidelines were developed to help to see important things, which might be forgotten when developing an online community. The thesis goes through the characteristic of an online community and human behaviour related to them and also compares behaviour in the Internet and real life. In addition, usability is an important part of the online communities and thus it is also covered in this thesis. As a result of this thesis an 8-step guideline was developed to ease the design of an online community. Guidelines were also applied to two real life cases which are described as one part of this work.

Tuote- ja tilaustietojen hallinta tukkukaupan toimitusketjussa

Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, millaisia tuote-ja tilaustietojen hallinnan malleja tukkukaupan toimitusketjussa on käytössä. Kaupan alan tilaus-toimitusketju on hyvin tietointensiivinen prosessi, ja siksi kiinnostava tiedon hallinnan näkökulmasta. Työssä perehdytään kolmen Suomessa toimivan caseyrityksen käytäntöihin päivittäistavara- kaupan, lääketukkukaupan ja sähkötarviketukkukaupan alalta. Toimitusketjun keskipisteenä on tässä työssä tukkukaupan organisaatio. Tiedon välitystä tarkastellaan tukkukaupan organisaation ja sen asiakkaiden välillä (B2B) ja toisaalta tukkukaupan ja sen ensimmäisen tason päämiesten / tavarantoimittajien välillä. Tutkimuksen keskeistä aineistoa ovat henkilökohtaiset haastattelut. Lisäksi tutkimuskysymyksiin etsittiin vastauksia myös alan kirjallisuudesta. Työ antaa yleiskuvaa tukkukaupan organisaatioiden tuote- ja tilaustietojen hallinnan nykytilasta ja kehityskohteista. Työ tarjoaa myös vertailupohjaa tuote- ja tilaustietojen hallinnan kehittämistä suunnitteleville muille organisaatioille. Kaikilla tarkastelluilla toimialoilla tuote- ja tilaustietojen hallintaa ohjaa pyrkimys kustannustehokkaaseen toimintatapaan. Tuotetietojen hallinnassa ensiarvoisen tärkeää on tuotetiedon nopea saatavuus, luotettavuus ja virheettömyys toimialasta riippumatta. Päivittäistavarakaupan tuotetietojen keskitettyä hallintaa voi perustellusti esittää malliksi myös muille kaupan aloille. Yhteistyökumppaneiden suuri määrä ja kasvavat tietovirrat korostavat transaktioiden prosessoinnin merkitystä toimitusketjussa.

Packet backbone design differences between commercial network and Container Trial System of LTE/SAE

The mobile networks of earlier and current generations, or 2G and 3G networks, provide users voice and packet services with higher transmission rates and good quality over the same core network. When developing the next generation of mobile networks the current quality of services needs to be maintained. This thesis concentrates on the next generation mobile network, especially on the evolution of the packet network part. The new mobile network has requirements for the common packet backbone network, Mobile Packet Backbone Network, which is additionally discussed in this study. The next generation mobile network, called LTE/SAE, is currently under testing. The test system is called Container Trial System. It is a mini sized LTE/SAE site. The LTE/SAE is studied in this thesis concentrating on the evolved packet core, the SAE part of the composition. The empirical part of the study compares the LTE/SAE Container Trial System and commercial network designs and additionally produces documentation for internal personnel and customers. The research is performed by comparing the documentations and specifications of both the Container Trial System and commercial network. Since the LTE commercial network is not yet constructed, the comparison is done theoretically. The purpose is furthermore to find out if there are any design issues that could be done differently in the next version of the Container Trial System.
