Alterações nas queixas subjetivas de memória e na escala de depressão geriátrica em adultos e idosos em Portugal estão associadas a um suplemento alimentar

A perda de memória é uma das principais queixas entre a população idosa. Reivindicada para melhorar a função cognitiva e de fácil obtenção em farmácias e dietéticas, a suplementação com fosfolípidos produziu resultados mistos em vários estudos. Um grupo de adultos e idosos saudáveis (n = 522) com idade 65,84 ± 10,74 anos, e com um nível de escolaridade de 7,90 ± 4,90 anos participaram do estudo. Os participantes foram submetidos a Avaliação Breve do Estado Mental (ABEM), Escala de Queixas de Memória (EQM) e Escala de Depressão Geriátrica (EDG). Três indivíduos apresentaram disfunção cognitiva, 505 queixas de memória apresentadas e 257 estavam acima do ponto de corte para a EDG. Subsequentemente, um grupo de mulheres (n = 17) utilizaram a suplementação com fosfolípidos durante 4 semanas. Após o período de suplementação, foi observada uma diminuição nos valores médios de EQM e EDG. A suplementação de fosfolípidos, ao longo de 4 semanas reduziu significativamente os valores EQM (p <0,05) neste grupo de mulheres.

El procedimiento administrativo para el sector minero

El propósito de esta tesis es establecer el procedimiento administrativo para la interposición de recursos en el sector minero, el cual permitirá que los administrados mineros puedan interponer los recursos en sede administrativa y judicial, en defensa de sus Derechos Mineros que han sido vulnerados por actos administrativos alejados de la norma jurídica. De esta manera se busca la aplicación la seguridad jurídica y el debido proceso establecido como derechos fundamentales en los Art. 23, numerales 26 y 27; y Art. 24 de la Constitución de la República y, evitar de esta manera la indefensión.

Tolerance of ruminant animals to high dose in-feed administration of a selenium-enriched yeast

The objective of the study was to determine if there were adverse effects on animal health and performance when a range of ruminant animals species were fed at least 10 times the maximum permitted European Union (EU) selenium (Se) dietary inclusion rate (0.568 mg Se/kg DM) in the form of selenium enriched yeast (SY) derived from a specific strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3060. In a series of studies, dairy cows, beef cattle, calves and lambs were offered either a control diet which contained no Se supplement or a treatment diet which contained the same basal feed ingredients plus a SY supplement which increased total dietary Se from 0.15 to 6.25, 0.20 to 6.74, 0.15 to 5.86 and 0.14 to 6.63 mg Se/kg DM, respectively. The inclusion of the SY supplement (P < 0.001) increased whole blood Se concentrations, reaching maximum mean values of 716, 1,505, 1,377, and 724 ng Se/mL for dairy cattle, beef cattle, calves and lambs, respectively. Selenomethionine accounted for 10% of total whole blood Se in control animals whereas the proportion in SY animals ranged between 40 and 75%. Glutathione peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.9) activity was higher (P < 0.05) in SY animals when compared with controls. A range of other biochemical and hematological parameters were assessed, but few differences of biological significance were established between treatments groups. There were no differences between treatment groups within each species with regard to animal physical performance or overall animal health. It was concluded that there were no adverse effects on animal health, performance and voluntary feed intake to the administration of at least ten times the EU maximum, or approximately twenty times the US FDA permitted concentration of dietary Se in the form of SY derived from a specific strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3060.

Ensemble-based data assimilation and the localisation problem

The “butterfly effect” is a popularly known paradigm; commonly it is said that when a butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil, it may cause a tornado in Texas. This essentially describes how weather forecasts can be extremely senstive to small changes in the given atmospheric data, or initial conditions, used in computer model simulations. In 1961 Edward Lorenz found, when running a weather model, that small changes in the initial conditions given to the model can, over time, lead to entriely different forecasts (Lorenz, 1963). This discovery highlights one of the major challenges in modern weather forecasting; that is to provide the computer model with the most accurately specified initial conditions possible. A process known as data assimilation seeks to minimize the errors in the given initial conditions and was, in 1911, described by Bjerkness as “the ultimate problem in meteorology” (Bjerkness, 1911).
