Russia and the Arab Spring: supporting the counter-revolution

Russia’s response to the Arab Spring ranged from apprehension to deep anxiety and diverged significantly from the US and the EU responses. While initially welcoming the popular demands for political reform in North Africa, the Russian reaction rapidly became more critical as a result of Western military intervention into Libya and the threat of the spread of Islamist extremism. It was these twin fears which prompted the Russian leadership to adopt an uncompromizing stance towards Syria. While geopolitical factors certainly played a role in driving Russian strategy, domestic political factors were also more significant. As the Russian leadership felt internally threatened by the growing opposition within the country, conflict in the Middle East highlighted the perceived flaws of the imposition of Western liberal democracy and the virtues of Russia’s own model of state-managed political order. There was, as such, a significant ideational and ideological dimension to the Russian response to the Arab Spring.

Probation staff experiences of managing suicidal and self-harming service users.

The current study sought to explore the impact of suicidal behaviours on probation staff, in relation to their experiences of working with probation service users who have carried out suicide, attempted suicide or self-harm. Thirteen in-depth interviews were carried out with probation staff who had direct contact with probation service users in one probation area, and had varying degrees of experience of managing suicidal or self-injurious service users. These were analysed using thematic analysis and five themes were identified. Findings indicate that staff felt that suicide and self-harm by service users are serious issues which need to be recognized and dealt with in an effective yet compassionate manner. Not attending the suicide prevention training, or lack of experience, were perceived as restricting their ability to know how to deal with these individuals, and offer support. Furthermore, staff were emotionally affected by these incidents and it is recommended that they should continue to be provided with access to appropriate support services after an incident.

Starting antidepressant use: a qualitative synthesis of UK and Australian data

Objective To explore people's experiences of starting antidepressant treatment. Design Qualitative interpretive approach combining thematic analysis with constant comparison. Relevant coding reports from the original studies (generated using NVivo) relating to initial experiences of antidepressants were explored in further detail, focusing on the ways in which participants discussed their experiences of taking or being prescribed an antidepressant for the first time. Participants 108 men and women aged 22–84 who had taken antidepressants for depression. Setting Respondents recruited throughout the UK during 2003–2004 and 2008 and 2012–2013 and in Australia during 2010–2011. Results People expressed a wide range of feelings about initiating antidepressant use. People's attitudes towards starting antidepressant use were shaped by stereotypes and stigmas related to perceived drug dependency and potentially extreme side effects. Anxieties were expressed about starting use, and about how long the antidepressant might begin to take effect, how much it might help or hinder them, and about what to expect in the initial weeks. People worried about the possibility of experiencing adverse effects and implications for their senses of self. Where people felt they had not been given sufficient time during their consultation information or support to take the medicines, the uncertainty could be particularly unsettling and impact on their ongoing views on and use of antidepressants as a viable treatment option. Conclusions Our paper is the first to explore in-depth patient existential concerns about start of antidepressant use using multicountry data. People need additional support when they make decisions about starting antidepressants. Health professionals can use our findings to better understand and explore with patients’ their concerns before their patients start antidepressants. These insights are key to supporting patients, many of whom feel intimidated by the prospect of taking antidepressants, especially during the uncertain first few weeks of treatment.

Relações públicas no sector da saúde e do bem-estar: estratégia de r.p. para o posionamento de uma cadeia de spas de hotel

A área da saúde e do bem-estar em Portugal, é um segmento em clara expansão. Dadas as suas características geográficas, estranha-se, contudo, a falta de equipamentos no campo da talassoterapia bem como a dispersidade da oferta no sector do turismo de saúde. Respondendo a uma necessidade sentida pelo grupo Hotéis Real, este trabalho de projecto pode definir-se como o desenvolvimento de uma estratégia de construção e expressão de um novo serviço de spas para esta cadeia hoteleira, numa perspectiva de comunicação corporate. Para tal, o projecto estrutura-se assente numa revisão de literatura que analisa as principais temáticas e questões tanto da área da saúde e do bem-estar, como do sector do turismo.

Estudo da influência da fragmentação no custo da produção de agregados graníticos

Hoje em dia algumas das principais preocupações que se tem na exploração a céu aberto, são a diminuição de custos e a máxima rentabilidade dos equipamentos. São dois aspectos que estão interligados uma vez que a rentabilização dos equipamentos tem como resultado directo a diminuição dos custos de todas as operações inerentes à exploração a céu aberto e, consequentemente, a diminuição dos custos finais de produção. É por essa lógica de pensamento que se procurou perceber e compreender o funcionamento e a rentabilidade dos equipamentos em função dos diferentes estados de fracturação do maciço rochoso. Este estudo foi realizado numa pedreira a norte de Portugal e complementa outros estudos já realizados, com o objectivo de definir características do diagrama de fogo que assegurem a maior rentabilidade da referida exploração. O estudo baseia-se em determinar os rendimentos da pá carregadora calculando os tempos de ciclo, isto é, o tempo que a pá demorou a carregar, a movimentar e a descarregar o material desmontado dos vários rebentamentos. Calculou-se o rendimento do martelo demolidor na fragmentação de grandes blocos, que não entrariam directamente no britador primário, o qual também foi alvo de estudo, nomeadamente, no que diz respeito aos tempos de encravamento e de britagem, onde se tentou correlacionar esses tempos com os vários desmontes e estimou-se o consumo de energia do britador primário utilizando a equação de Bond. Por fim, realizou-se um estudo comparativo do consumo energético entre as várias fases da exploração a céu aberto. Foram realizados levantamentos geológico-geotécnicos de superfícies de descontinuidades recorrendo à técnica de amostragem linear nas superfícies do maciço rochoso para perceber o tipo de fragmentação e orientação do mesmo.

This paper intends to show the Portuguese municipalities’ commitment, since the first decade of this century, in cultural facilities of municipal management and how it provided 12 of the 18 district capitals of mainland Portugal with cultural equipment, but after all we want to know if this effort resulted in a regular, diverse, and innovative schedule. Investing in urban regeneration, local governments have tried to convert cities’ demographic changes (strengthening of the most educated and professionally qualified groups) in effective cultural demands that consolidate the three axes of development competitiveness-innovation-creativity. What the empirical study to the programming and communication proposals of those equipment shows is that it is not enough to provide cities with facilities; to escape to a utilitarian conception of culture, there is a whole work to be done so that such equipment be experienced and felt as new public sphere. Equipment in which proposals go through a fluid bind, constructed through space and discourse with local community, devoted a diversified and innovative bet full filling development axis. This paper presents in a systematic way what contributes to this binding on the analyzed equipment.
