The Effects of Proper Implementation of Bilingual Programs in Elementary Schools in the United States

Americans’ support of bilingual education has been closely linked with the immigration sentiments of the times. Current anti-immigrant feelings on bilingualism have intensified its negative connotation and effectiveness in English language acquisition. Improper implementation of bilingual programs has also fueled this misconception. This literature will challenge these misconceptions.

The Effect of Using Portfolios on Student-Parent and Parent-Teacher Communication

This action research project studied how portfolios enhance the communication between students, parents, and the teacher. While using portfolios in my class, students experienced more dialogue with their parents regarding their effort, the topics being taught, and explanations requiring communication with mathematical reasoning.

The purpose of this paper is to share the results of an 8-week study that focused on the effects of incorporating real-life applications and rewards to measure their impact on student motivation. Sequential Logistic Regression: A Method to Reveal Subtlety in Self-Efficacy

This paper uses self-efficacy to predict the success of women in introductory physics. We show how sequential logistic regression demonstrates the predictive ability of self-efficacy, and reveals variations with type of physics course. Also discussed are the sources of self-efficacy that have the largest impact on predictive ability.

Classroom Reform with CMPLE: A Cogenerative Mediation Process for Learning Environments

This research identifies the value of a community-run NGO (nongovermental organization) in its work to advocate for a more positive image of Rio’s favelas (urban slums). Basic interpretive inquiry is used to analyze interviews with the principle spokesperson for the organization. Recommendations for further research are made.

Class Placement and Academic and Behavioral Variables as Predictors of Graduation for Students with Disabilities

This study investigated the impact of specified variables related to academic history, behavioral history, and availability of inclusive systems as potential risk factors for dropouts, impacting students with disabilities. Results indicated that a successful academic history was the only significant predictor of graduation potential when statistically controlling all the other variables.

Transforming Participation: A Case Study of an Introductory Physics Student in a Modeling Instruction Class

We present a case study on how participation of one student changed during her first semester of introductory physics class using Modeling Instruction. Using video recordings, we explore how her behavior is consistent with a change from thinking of group learning as a parallel activity to one that is collaborative.

Analyzing Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Development of Content and Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Mathematics through Microteaching Lesson Study

This study examines the effect of Microteaching Lesson Study participation on the mathematics content and pedagogical content knowledge of 52 elementary preservice teachers. Preliminary findings, which are positive, are discussed.
