We discuss existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the quasilinear ordinary differential equation-(u' / root 1 - u'(2))' = f(t, u). Depending on the behaviour of f = f(t, s) near s = 0, we prove the existence of either one, or two, or three, or infinitely many positive solutions. In general, the positivity of f is not required. All results are obtained by reduction to an equivalent non-singular problem to which variational or topological methods apply in a classical fashion.

We study the existence and multiplicity of positive radial solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the Minkowski-curvature equation { -div(del upsilon/root 1-vertical bar del upsilon vertical bar(2)) in B-R, upsilon=0 on partial derivative B-R,B- where B-R is a ball in R-N (N >= 2). According to the behaviour off = f (r, s) near s = 0, we prove the existence of either one, two or three positive solutions. All results are obtained by reduction to an equivalent non-singular one-dimensional problem, to which variational methods can be applied in a standard way.

We prove existence theorems for the Dirichlet problem for hypersurfaces of constant special Lagrangian curvature in Hadamard manifolds. The first results are obtained using the continuity method and approximation and then refined using two iterations of the Perron method. The a-priori estimates used in the continuity method are valid in any ambient manifold.

We consider the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation in a non-locally perturbed half-plane, this problem arising in electromagnetic scattering by one-dimensional rough, perfectly conducting surfaces. We propose a new boundary integral equation formulation for this problem, utilizing the Green's function for an impedance half-plane in place of the standard fundamental solution. We show, at least for surfaces not differing too much from the flat boundary, that the integral equation is uniquely solvable in the space of bounded and continuous functions, and hence that, for a variety of incident fields including an incident plane wave, the boundary value problem for the scattered field has a unique solution satisfying the limiting absorption principle. Finally, a result of continuous dependence of the solution on the boundary shape is obtained.

The aim of this paper is the numerical treatment of a boundary value problem for the system of Stokes' equations. For this we extend the method of approximate approximations to boundary value problems. This method was introduced by V. Maz'ya in 1991 and has been used until now for the approximation of smooth functions defined on the whole space and for the approximation of volume potentials. In the present paper we develop an approximation procedure for the solution of the interior Dirichlet problem for the system of Stokes' equations in two dimensions. The procedure is based on potential theoretical considerations in connection with a boundary integral equations method and consists of three approximation steps as follows. In a first step the unknown source density in the potential representation of the solution is replaced by approximate approximations. In a second step the decay behavior of the generating functions is used to gain a suitable approximation for the potential kernel, and in a third step Nyström's method leads to a linear algebraic system for the approximate source density. For every step a convergence analysis is established and corresponding error estimates are given.

We analyse the Dirichlet problem for the elliptic sine Gordon equation in the upper half plane. We express the solution $q(x,y)$ in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert problem whose jump matrix is uniquely defined by a certain function $b(\la)$, $\la\in\R$, explicitly expressed in terms of the given Dirichlet data $g_0(x)=q(x,0)$ and the unknown Neumann boundary value $g_1(x)=q_y(x,0)$, where $g_0(x)$ and $g_1(x)$ are related via the global relation $\{b(\la)=0$, $\la\geq 0\}$. Furthermore, we show that the latter relation can be used to characterise the Dirichlet to Neumann map, i.e. to express $g_1(x)$ in terms of $g_0(x)$. It appears that this provides the first case that such a map is explicitly characterised for a nonlinear integrable {\em elliptic} PDE, as opposed to an {\em evolution} PDE.

In this work we show that the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic operator are generically simple in the set Of Z(2)-symmetric regions of R-n, n >= 2, with a suitable topology. To accomplish this, we combine Baire`s lemma, a generalised version of the transversality theorem, due to Henry [Perturbation of the boundary in boundary value problems of PDEs, London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series 318 (Cambridge University Press, 2005)], and the method of rapidly oscillating functions developed in [A. L. Pereira and M. C. Pereira, Mat. Contemp. 27 (2004) 225-241].

In this study, a given quasilinear problem is solved using variational methods. In particular, the existence of nontrivial solutions for GP is examined using minimax methods. The main theorem on the existence of a nontrivial solution for GP is detailed.

The purpose of this dissertation is to prove that the Dirichlet problem in a bounded domain is uniquely solvable for elliptic equations in divergence form. The proof can be achieved by Hilbert space methods based on generalized or weak solutions. Existence and uniqueness of a generalized solution for the Dirichlet problem follow from the Fredholm alternative and weak maximum principle.

We consider a parametric semilinear Dirichlet problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite unbounded potential and with a reaction of superdifissive type. Using variational and truncation techniques, we show that there exists a critical parameter value λ_{∗}>0 such that for all λ> λ_{∗} the problem has least two positive solutions, for λ= λ_{∗} the problem has at least one positive solutions, and no positive solutions exist when λ∈(0,λ_{∗}). Also, we show that for λ≥ λ_{∗} the problem has a smallest positive solution.
