Girls should increasingly participate in the health benefits of team sports learning opportunities. Boys need to not neglect academic learning goals in favour of team sports rewards that are highly valued by peers. Co-curricularly disengaged boys need to participate in co-curricular learning activities that provide opportunities for boys to succeed.

This thesis investigated gender, learning and equity within the context of women learning IT skills in Australian workplaces. The research identified women's training needs and responses when attending IT classes and found that many women in the workplace grapple with issues of social conditioning predicated on common perceptions of IT being aligned with a masculine culture.

To a significant extent, Australian local government CEOs have opportunity to enhance their current understandings of and attitudes towards human resource imperatives such as organisational culture, employee empowerment and non-linear management practices. Improvements in these areas could better achieve organisational results as HR strategy intentions would be aided by congruent applications.

This thesis examined how involvement in an online network (The Education Network of Ontario / Reseau educatif de l'Ontario) affected teachers professionally. Findings indicated that the network had supported an online community of practice which encouraged development of information and communication skills but that the community had eventually succombed to social and professional tensions.

This thesis explores experiences of transitioning to manhood of a group of New Zealand men, focussing on aspects of spirituality. Participants describe perceptions of masculinity that digress from cultural norms, question the trend to advocate specific 'rites-of-passage', and view faith communities as potentially significant but often irrelevant in practice.

Using three separate but interrelated studies with adult unemployed vocational learners, the research quantitatively and qualitatively investigated the effects of a pre-training intervention labelled Lifetime Goal-setting and Goal-getting. The research found learner dispositional development and statistically significant moves towards maturation empowering jobseeking learners to face the challenges of obtaining employment.

This thesis proposes new thinking about educational inclusion for children with disabilities. It examines current policies and practices alongside experiences of teachers, parents, aides, students and children with intellectual disabilities. It elaborates the value of (inter)dependence as a guiding principle and identifies 'chinks of possibility' to drive inclusion efforts.

This case study of a parent-initiated community project called Wings Melaka has helped improve provision of early intervention services to Malaysian children with disabilities, and their families, by making contributions specifically to the workplace at Wings Melaka, and more generally, to the much-neglected field of early intervention in Malaysia.

The research consisted of narrative writing and reflective practice to promote the construction of new understandings between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Australia. The research findings propose exemplars of knowledge and practice and approaches to learning that are community centred, immersed in social practices and which include systematic narrative formation.

This thesis develops ethnographically-based studies to offer new perspectives on the practice of homework in Australia. The thesis argues that homework is not simply a technique for improving school performance but is a form of pedagogical work that mediates home-school relations and generates classed and gendered emotional labour.
