This research paper focuses on the Russian food retail sector and its structure and development. At the moment it is one of the fastest growing markets today. The growth originates from high oil price, which has been accumulated to people’s wages. But even though the income increases, the share of food of all retail trade has been fairly stable. Thus, the consumption is shifting to products with more quality and value. The share of modern retail outlets is low, as the Russian retail sector is still very dispersed to traditional retail outlets such as kiosks, open markets and small grocery stores. The store chains are, however, becoming more and more significant. The biggest market for retailers is Moscow but nowadays the chains are expanding rapidly into the other regions. Even though the markets have not been saturated in Moscow, the best prospects for growth are in the regions. The most important factor restricting the growth in Moscow is the availability of real estate and land plots for stores. The market is moving forward to saturation, and a consolidation process will follow. This process has already started but not many acquisitions have been made so far. To this point the domestic chains have settled to form alliances. The chains are trying to enhance their power in price negotiations by forming purchasing alliances, introducing private label goods and using the regional expansion as a striking weapon. In order to follow the growing chains to other regions the producer must sell its products to the chains at favorable terms. Suppliers are strong in negotiations when they have a functioning distribution network, ability to JIT-deliveries, proper documentation policies, a strong brand, reliability in deliveries and a fair price. The size of the entry ticket, i.e. the listing fee may define the shelf space a producer gets in the stores.

The aim of this study is to describe the structure of the pharmacy industry in four post-Soviet states on the Baltic Sea: Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In addition to this, the opportunities that these markets have to offer for international pharmaceutical companies are explored. After the Soviet Union collapsed at the beginning of 1990s, the pharmacy sector has gone through tremendous changes. The pharmacy market shifted from a centrally controlled, one supplier system to an industry in which multiple distributors are competing in importing, wholesaling, and retailing of medicinal products. In the Baltic States, the number of pharmacies has not increased during the last years and companies have been growing mainly by acquisitions. Especially in Estonia the market is saturated and price competition is fierce. Similarly, in Latvia and Lithuania, markets are consolidating and wholesalers are growingly taking part in retailing by acquiring smaller chains. In Russia, the market is still fragmented and only one national pharmacy chain can be named, pharmacy chain “36.6”. Pharmacy chains are growing mostly through organic growth and competition between the biggest players is relatively low. The Russian market clearly offers many opportunities for international pharmaceutical operators. The ageing population, growing level of income, and changing living habits are creating new and growing needs for modern healthcare services and products.

This study presents mathematical methods for evaluation of retail performance with special regard to product sourcing strategies. Forecast accuracy, process lead time, offshore / local sourcing mix and up front / replenishment buying mix are defined as critical success factors in connection with sourcing seasonal products with a fashion content. As success measures, this research focuses on service level, lost sales, product substitute percentage, gross margin, gross margin return on inventory and mark down rate. The accuracy of demand forecast is found to be a fundamental success factor. Forecast accuracy depends on lead time. Lead times are traditionally long and buying decisions are made seven to eight months prior to the start of the selling season. Forecast errors cause stockouts and lost sales. Some of the products bought for the selling season will not be sold and have to be marked down and sold at clearance, causing loss of gross margin. Gross margin percentage is not the best tool for evaluating sourcing decisions and in the context of this study gross margin return on inventory, which combines profitability and assets management, is used. The findings of this research suggest that there are more profitable ways of sourcing products than buying them from low cost offshore sources. Mixing up front and inseason replenishment deliveries, especially when point of sale information is used for improving forecast accuracy, results in better retail performance. Quick Response and Vendor Managed Inventory strategies yield better results than traditional up front buying from offshore even if local purchase prices are higher. Increasing the number of selling seasons, slight over buying for the season in order to

Muotikaupan kansainvälistymisen motiivien vaikutusta operaatiomuodon valintaan on aikaisemmin tutkittu niukasti. Pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on esittää, miten muotikaupan kansainvälistymisen motiivit vaikuttavat operaatiomuodon valintaan suomalaisen yrityksen näkökulmasta. Teorialähtöisen kvalitatiivisen case-tutkimuksen primääriaineisto kerättiin teemahaastatteluin Venäjälle kansainvälistymistä pohtivasta yrityksestä. Tutkimustulokset todistavat muotikaupan kansainvälistymisen motiivien vaikuttavan merkittävästi operaatiomuodon valintaan, mutta motiivien ohella vaikuttavat myös muut tekijät, tärkeimpinä kontrollin tarve ja kohdemaan markkinaolosuhteet. Lisäksi keskeisenä vaikuttavana tekijänä on huomioitava valikoiman sopeutustarve kohdemarkkinoilla. Tulokset osoittavat motiivien sekä muiden tekijöiden ja operaatiomuodon valinnan välisen, kontekstisidonnaisen, kausaalisuhteen lisäksi karkealla tasolla vaikuttavien tekijöiden keskinäistä tärkeysjärjestystä ja vaikutusastetta operaatiomuodon valintaan.

Tietämyksen hyödyntäminen parantaa yrityksen arvontuotannon lopputuloksia - myös vähittäiskaupassa. Vähittäiskaupoille erityisesti asiakastietämys on erityisen tärkeää. Asiakastietämyksen suhteen vähittäiskaupat ovat periaatteessa erinomaisessa asemassa, koska niiden henkilökunta tapaa asiakkaita päivittäin. Viimeisen 20 - 30 vuoden aikana vähittäiskauppa on kuitenkin siirtynyt ketjuliiketoimintamalliin, jossa toiminnan tehostamiseksi suurin osa päätöksenteosta on keskitetty ketjuyksikköön pois asiakasrajapinnasta. Päätöksenteon tueksi tuotetaan runsaasti määrällistä tietoa, mutta ensikäden syvällistä tietämystä asiakkaista päätöksenteossa ei pystytä hyödyntämään. Tämän työn tavoite on ollut kehittää nykyaikaisille vähittäiskaupoille soveltuva tapa saada keskitetyn päätöksenteon tueksi ensikäden asiakastietämystä. Työn metodologia nojaa suunnittelutieteeseen ja konstruktiiviseen tutkimusotteeseen, joissa molemmissa keskeisessä roolissa on konstruktio, jolla pyritään sekä ratkaisemaan käytännön ongelma että tuottamaan uutta teoreettista tietoa. Työn viitekehys muodostuu tietämystä käsittelevästä kirjallisuudesta. Konstruktion muodostamista varten työssä on tutustuttu vähittäiskaupasta löytyviin esimerkkeihin hyödyntää asiakastietämystä. Lisäksi työssä on systematisoitu tietämyksen luomiseen liittyvää käsitteistöä arvoketjunäkökulmasta.

A fast changing dynamic business environment is becoming a norm today in different areas, including retailing. The aims of this study are to explore existing store formats of branded sportswear retailing and their characteristics, and to identify the trends which might shape their future. The ultimate goal, however, is to create and analyze images of the future of branded sportswear retailing in Germany 2030 by applying the methods of futures studies. As theoretical background, the cyclical theories of retail evolution have been used. Empirical material is obtained by conducting a Disaggregative Policy Delphi method based study, the aim of which is to obtain well–argued qualitative and quantitative information from experts about store format development in order to create future images based on cluster analysis. Flagship stores, Concept stores, Factory Outlets, Pop-up stores, E-commerce and M-commerce represent the diversity of store formats existing in Germany today. They have different aims, roles, and advantages which retailers try to leverage. However such trends as multichannel integration, technological enhancements, growing popularity of online channels, switching customer behaviors, customization and personalization, and economic turbulence might shape the future of sportswear retailing. Four future images constructed: “Multichannel Integration”, “Smart and Personal”, “Consumer Diversification”, and “Always Online” – describe alternative futures of German branded sportswear store formats in 2030 based on different trends, assumptions, hopes and fears. They also point out uncertainties in retailing such as cannibalization of channels, the growing power and expectations of consumers, the complexity of multichannel synergies, and the switching customer behavior. Constructed future images, thus, provide readers with an opportunity to imagine and explore alternative states of the future of branded sportswear store formats in Germany 2030. They could serve well as a tool to communicate the results to decision–makers, compare them, and to analyze to inspire and direct actions for a better future tomorrow.

Vaikuttava tekijä taustalla on johtaminen.

Companies require information in order to gain an improved understanding of their customers. Data concerning customers, their interests and behavior are collected through different loyalty programs. The amount of data stored in company data bases has increased exponentially over the years and become difficult to handle. This research area is the subject of much current interest, not only in academia but also in practice, as is shown by several magazines and blogs that are covering topics on how to get to know your customers, Big Data, information visualization, and data warehousing. In this Ph.D. thesis, the Self-Organizing Map and two extensions of it – the Weighted Self-Organizing Map (WSOM) and the Self-Organizing Time Map (SOTM) – are used as data mining methods for extracting information from large amounts of customer data. The thesis focuses on how data mining methods can be used to model and analyze customer data in order to gain an overview of the customer base, as well as, for analyzing niche-markets. The thesis uses real world customer data to create models for customer profiling. Evaluation of the built models is performed by CRM experts from the retailing industry. The experts considered the information gained with help of the models to be valuable and useful for decision making and for making strategic planning for the future.

Tutkittava yritys on rautakauppa-alan johtava brändi Suomessa. Yritys on tutkimuksen tekemisen aikana ostettu osaksi toimialan Pohjoismaiden suurinta verkkokauppakonsernia. Kvalitatiivinen tutkimus suoritettiin tapaustutkimuksena, johon kuului osana kvantitatiivinen asiakaskysely. Uuden omistajan myötä on mahdollisuus rakentaa kestävä kilpailuetu. Tutkimustuloksena muodostui myös näkemys, miten yrityksen strategista suunnittelua pitäisi kehittää sekä muodostui ehdotus jatkotutkimukselle. Tutkimuksen pohjalta rakentui malli monikanavaisen DIY- kaupan arvoketjusta ja kehitysehdotus esimerkkiyrityksen arvoketjun kehittämisestä.

The aim of this master’s thesis is to provide a real life example of how marketing research data is used by different functions in the NPD process. In order to achieve this goal, a case study in a company was implemented where gathering, analysis, distribution and synthesis of marketing research data in NPD were studied. The main research question was formulated as follows: How is marketing research data integrated and used by different company functions in the NPD process? The theory part of the master’s thesis was focused on the discussion of the marketing function role in NPD, use of marketing research particularly in the food industry, as well as issues related to the marketing/R&D interface during the NPD process. The empirical part of the master’s thesis was based on qualitative explanatory case study research. Individual in-depth interviews with company representatives, company documents and online research were used for data collection and analyzed through triangulation method. The empirical findings advocate that the most important marketing data sources at the concept generation stage of NPD are: global trends monitoring, retailing audit and consumers insights. These data sets are crucial for establishing the potential of the product on the market and defining the desired features for the new product to be developed. The findings also suggest the example of successful crossfunctional communication during the NPD process with formal and informal communication patterns. General managerial recommendations are given on the integration in NPD of a strategy, process, continuous improvement, and motivated cross-functional product development teams.
