Light and annealing induced changes in Si-H bonds in undoped a-Si:H have been investigated by a differential infrared spectroscopy method. The light-induced changes in Si-H bonds are not monotonic, quite different from the usual Staebler-Wronski effect in electronic properties, and involve more complicated physics. The magnitude of the light-induced changes in Si-H bonds is proportional to the hydrogen content in the film. There may exist more than one microscopic process which determine the light-induced changes in Si-H bonds. Almost the whole a-Si:H network is affected when a-Si:H is subjected to Light-soaking or to annealing. The light-induced changes in Si-H bonds may be an independent light-induced phenomenon or an auxiliary process of the metastable SWE defect creation. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. A series of diphasic nanocrystalline silicon films and solar cells was prepared using different hydrogen dilution ratios of silane by very high frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (VHF-PECVD). It was observed that after light soaking the open circuit voltage (V-oc) of the diphasic solar cells increased, while that of amorphous silicon solar cells decreased. Raman scattering spectroscopy was performed on the series of diphasic silicon films before and after light soaking. It was found that after light soaking the nanostruclures in the diphasic nanocrystalline silicon films were changed. Both the grain sizes and grain volume fraction reduced, while the grain boundary components increased. These results provide experimental evidence for the conjecture that the light-induced increase in V-oc of the diphasic nanocrystalline solar cells might be induced by the changes in the nanostructure of the intrinsic layer. The methane hydration process is investigated in a semi-continuous stirred tank reactor. Liquid temperatures and reaction rates without stirrer are compared with those occurring with stirrer, while at the same time better stirring conditions of the methane hydration process are given by the experiments. Some basic data of fluid mechanics, for example, stirring Reynolds number, Froucle number and stirrer power, are calculated during the methane hydration process, which can be applied to evaluate stirrer capacity and provide some basic data for a scaled up reactor. Based on experiment and calculations in this work, some conclusions are drawn. First, the stirrer has great influence on the methane hydration process. Batch stirring is helpful to improve the mass transfer and heat transfer performances of the methane hydration process. Second, induction time can be shortened effectively by use of the stirrer. Third, in this paper, the appropriate stirring velocity and stirring time were 320 rpm and 30 min, respectively, at 5.0 MPa, for which the storage capacity and reaction time were 159.1 V/V and 370 min, respectively. Under the condition of the on-flow state, the initial stirring Reynolds number of the fluid and the stirring power were 12,150 and 0.54 W, respectively. Fourth, some suggestions, for example, the use of another type of stirrer or some baffles, are proposed to accelerate the methane hydration process. Comparing with literature data, higher storage capacity and hydration rate are achieved in this work. Moreover, some fluid mechanics parameters are calculated, which can provide some references to engineering application.

Fulgides are one kind of organic photochromic compound, which are famous for their thermal irreversibility. In this report, from the difference spectra of the absorption A() of one kind of pyrrylfulgide, the spectral refractive index change n() was calculated by the Kramers-Kronig relation (KKR), and a good correlation of theoretically derived values and the experimental values of the n measured by a modified Michelson interferometer was found. Further, it is demonstrated that it was possible to calculate the spectral dependence of diffraction efficiency from the easily accessible absorption changes. This method will be a useful tool for the characterization and optimization of fulgide films. The results show that the diffraction efficiency is high at 488 and 750 nm, where the absorption is very small, so we can realize non-destructive reconstruction.

A new method developed for detecting possible subtle changes in Si-H bonds of a-Si:H after light soaking is described in detail. The method promises a sensitivity orders of magnitude higher than that reached by the usual IR spectrometer. Some preliminary results on phosphorus doped a-Si:H are given.

After illumination with 1-1.3 eV photons during cooling-down, metastable PH modes are observed by IR absorption at 5 K in semi-insulating InP:Fe. They correlate with the photo-injection of holes, but not with a change of the charge state of the K-related centres present at equilibrium. They are explained by a change of the bonding of H, induced by hole trapping, from IR-inactive centres to PH-containing centres, stable only below 80 K. One metastable centre has well-defined geometrical parameters and the other one could be located in a region near from the interface with (Fe,P) precipitates.

Self-organized InAs quantum; dots sheets are grown on GaAs(100) substrate and tapped by 80nm GaAs layer with molecular beam epitaxy. Samples were annealed and characterized with Raman spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photolumincscence (PL). The Raman spectra indicates arsenic clusters in the GaAs capping layer. The TEM analysis revealed the relaxation of strain in some InAs islands with the introduction of the network of 90 dislocations. In addition, the structural changes also lead to the changes of the PL spectra from me InAs islands. Their correlation was discussed, Our results suggest:est that annealing may be used to intentionally modify me properties of self-organized InAs islands on GaAs.
