By mass-selected low energy ion beam deposition, amorphous carbon film was obtained. X-ray diffraction, Raman and Auger electron spectroscopy depth line shape measurements showed that such carbon films contained diamond particles. The main growth mechanism is subsurface implantation. Furthermore, it was indicated in a different way that ion bombardment played a decisive role in bias enhanced nucleation of chemical vapor deposition diamond.

The mode wavelength and quality factor (Q-factor) for resonant modes in optical equilateral triangle resonators (ETR's) are calculated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique and the Pade approximation, For an ETR with the side length of 3 mu m and the refractive index of 3.2, we get the mode wavelength interval of about 70 nm and the Q-factor of the fundamental mode over 10(3), The results show that the ETR is suitable to realize single-mode operation, and that the radiation loss in the corner regions of ETR is rather low, In addition, the numerical results of the mode wavelength agree very well with our analytical formula.

We demonstrate that the carrier capture and relaxation processes in InAs/GaAs quantum dots can be detected by a simple degenerate pump-probe technique. We have observed a rising process in the transient reflectivity, following the initial fast relaxation in a GaAs matrix, and assigned this rising process to the carrier capture from the GaAs barriers to the InAs layers. The assignment was modeled using the Kramers-Kronig relations. The capture time was found to depend strongly on the InAs layer thickness as well as on the excitation density and photon energy. The simple reflection technique is usually used to measure the linear electro-optic (EO) coefficient (Pockels coefficient) in the development of EO polymer thin films. But there are some problems in some articles in the determination of the phase shift between the s and p light modes of a laser beam waveguided into the polymer film while a modulating voltage is applied across the electrodes, and different expressions for the linear EO coefficient measured have been given in these articles. In our research, more accurate expression of the linear EO coefficient was deduced by suitable considering the phase shift between the s and p light modes. The linear EO coefficients of several polymer thin films were measured by reflection technique, and the results of the Linear EO coefficient calculated by different expressions were compared. The limit of the simple reflection technique for measuring the linear EO coefficient of the polymer thin films was discussed.

Submicrometer channel and rib waveguides based on SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator) have been designed and fabricated with electron-beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma dry etching. Propagation loss of 8.39dB/mm was measured using the cut-back method. Based on these so-called nanowire waveguides, we have also demonstrated some functional components with small dimensions, including sharp 90 degrees bends with radius of a few micrometers, T-branches, directional couplers and multimode interferometer couplers.

We report a new technique, called SAP, for side pumping of double-clad, rare-earth-doped fiber lasers using fiber-coupled pump sources. The highest coupling efficiency can even exceed 92% in theory with this structure.

We present detailed design, fabrication, and characterization issues of submicron rib waveguides based on silicon-on-insulator. The waveguides fabricated by EBL and ICP processes have propagation loss of 1.8dB/mm and bend loss of 0.14dB/90 degrees for bends with radius of 5 mu m.

Characteristics of microring/racetrack resonators, in submicron SOI rib waveguides, have been investigated. The effects of waveguide dimensions, coupler design, roughness, and oxide cladding are considered. Moreover, guided mode, loss and dispersion of such waveguides are analyzed.

Extracellular neural recording requires neural probes having more recording sites as well as limited volumes. With its mechanical characteristic and abundant process method, Silicon is a kind of material fit for producing neural probe. Silicon on insulator (SOI) is adopted in this paper to fabricate neural probes. The uniformity and manufacturability are improved. The fabricating process and testing results of a series of Multi channel micro neural probes were reported. The thickness of the probe is 15 mu m-30 mu m. The typical impedance characteristics of the record sites are around 2M Omega at 1k Hz. The performance of the neural probe in-vivo was tested on anesthetic rat. The recorded neural spike was typically around 140 mu V. Spike recorded from individual site could exceed 700 mu V. The average signal noise ratio was 7 or more.

SOI (Silicon on Insulator) based photonic devices has attracted more and more attention in the recent years. Integration of SOI optical switch matrix with isolating grooves, total internal reflection (TIR) mirrors and spot size converter (SSC) was studied. A folding re-arrangeable non-blocking 4x4 optical switch matrix and a blocking 16x16 matrix with TIR mirrors and SSC were fabricated on SOI wafer. The performaces, including extinction ratio and the crosstalk, are better than before. The insertion loss and the polarization dependent loss (PDL) at 1.55 mu m increase slightly with longer device length, more bend and intersecting waveguides. The insertion losses decrease 2 similar to 3 dB when anti-reflection films are added in the ends of the devices. The rise and fall times of the devices are 2.1 mu s and 2.3 mu s, respectively.

A linear photodiode array spectrometer based, high resolution interrogation technique for fiber Bragg grating sensors is demonstrated. Spline interpolation and Polynomial Approximation Algorithm (PAA) are applied to the data points acquired by the spectrometer to improve the original PAA based interrogation method. Thereby fewer pixels are required to achieve the same resolution as original. Theoretical analysis indicates that if the FWHM of a FBG covers more than 3 pixels, the resolution of central wavelength shift will arrive at less than 1 pm. While the number of pixels increases to 6, the nominal resolution will decrease to 0.001 pm. Experimental result shows that Bragg wavelength resolution of similar to 1 pm is obtained for a FBG with FWHM of similar to 0.2 nm using a spectrometer with a pixel resolution of similar to 70 pm.

A SOI-based thermo-optic waveguide switch matrix worked at 1.55 mu m, integrated with spot size converters is designed and fabricated for the first time. The insertion loss and polarization dependent loss are less than 13dB and 2dB, respectively. The extinction ratio is larger than 19dB. The response time is less than 5 mu s and the power consumption of the switch cell is about 200mW.

An ultra-wide-band frequency response measurement system for optoelectronic devices has been established using the optical heterodyne method utilizing a tunable laser and a wavelenath-fixed distributed feedback laser. By controlling the laser diode cavity length, the beat frequency is swept from DC to hundreds GHz. An outstanding advantage is that this measurement system does not need any high-speed light modulation source and additional calibration. In this measurement, two types of different O/E receivers have been tested. and 3 dB bandwidths measured by this system were 14.4GHz and 40GHz, respectively. The comparisons between experimental data and that from manufacturer show that this method is accurate and easy to carry out.
