The objective of this master’s thesis was to examine the effect of customer orientation on customer satisfaction and how customer satisfaction and customer retention contribute to firm profitability. Beside customer orientation, also other antecedents of customer satisfaction, i.e. service quality, flexibility, trust and commitment, were investigated as control variables. Literature review revealed several research gaps concerning research of the key concepts. These research calls were also answered. The empirical study focused on one case company, a telecommunication expert. The data for the empirical part was collected with web-based questionnaire from case company’s business customers in January-February 2008. Sample (N=95) produced 59 answers, thus the response rate of the survey was 62,1%. The data was analyzed by using statistical analysis program, SPSS. As a conclusion, the results indicate that customer orientation do not affect customer satisfaction directly, but through service quality, flexibility and trust. Moreover, customer satisfaction has positive impacts on commitment and intentions to stay as a customer in the future, but not on profitability. In the present study, only past purchase behavior, measured with customer database measure, is positively related to firm profitability.

The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of the role and nature of trust in asymmetric technology partnership formation. In the knowledge-based "learning race" knowledge is considered as a primary source for competitive advantage. In the emerging ICT sector the high pace of technological change, the convergence of technologies and industries as well as the increasing complexity and uncertainty have forced even the largest players to seek cooperation for complementary knowledge and capabilities. Small technology firms need the complementary resources and legitimacy of the large firms to grow and compete in the global market place. Most of the earlier research indicates, however, that partnerships with asymmetric size, managerial resources and cultures have failed. A basic assumption supported by earlier research was that trust is a critical factor in asymmetric technology partnership formation. Asymmetric technology partnership formation is a dynamic and multi-dimensional process, and consequently a holistic research approach was selected. Research issue was approached from different levels: the individual decision-maker, the firm and the relationship between the parties. Also the impact of the dynamic environment and technology content was analyzed. A multitheoretical approach and a qualitative research method with in-depth interviews in five large ICT companies and eight small ICT companies enabled a holistic and rich view of the research issue. Study contributes on the scarce understanding on the nature and evolution of trust in asymmetric technology partnership formation. It sheds also light on the specific nature of asymmetric technology partnerships. The partnerships were found to be tentative and the diverse strategic intent of small and large technology firms appeared as a major challenge. The role of the boundary spanner was highlighted as a possibility to match the incompatible organizational cultures. A shared vision was found to be a pre-condition for individual-based fast trust leading to intuitive decision-making and experimentation. The relationships were tentative and they were continuously re-evaluated through the key actors' sense making of the technology content, asymmetry and the dynamic environment. A multi-dimensional conceptualization for trust was created and propositions on the role and nature of trust for further research are given. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksensa oli luoda kokonaiskuva strategian toimeenpanoprosessista ja tuoda esiin case –yrityksen strategian toimeenpanon haasteet. Case –yritys toimii tietoliikennepalvelujen toimialalla, joka on ollut jatkuvassa muutoksessa. Yritys käynnisti strategiaprosessin vuonna 2002, jonka seurauksena liiketoiminnan painopistettä muutettiin palveluliiketoimintaan. Strategian toimeenpano ei sujunut haasteitta. Yritys on käynnistämässä uutta strategiaprosessia. Jotta edellisen strategian toimeenpanon ongelmat vältettäisiin, haluttiin tutkia, mikä on case –yrityksen strategian toimeenpanon taso tällä hetkellä ja tunnistaa case -yrityksen strategian toimeenpanemisen kehittämiskohdat. Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen case –tutkimus, joka toteutettiin teemahaastatteluin. Tulokset osoittivat, että case –yrityksessä strategian toimeenpanoa voidaan kehittää erityisesti selkeyttämällä visio, lisäämällä johtajuutta ja visionäärisyyttä. Strategian toimeenpanossa johdolta vaaditaan myyntitaitoja: selkeää päämäärää, viestintää, luottamuksen tunteen luomista ja herkkyyttä kuunnella henkilöstön tuntoja. Johdon on itse omalla esimerkillään tehtävä tämä myyntityö. Hyvä visio poistaa muutosvastarintaa ja ohjaa oikeisiin päätöksiin. Ilman hyvää visiota, strategiasta voi tulla toimeenpanokelvoton. Strateginen johtaminen jatkuvana oppimisprosessina antaa hyvät mahdollisuudet tunnistaa toimintaympäristön muutokset. Strategiaprosessi kasvattaa koko yrityksen visionäärisyyttä samalla sitouttaen strategian toimeenpanoon. Lisäksi strategiaprosessi auttaa luomaan yritykseen joustavan oppivan organisaation kulttuurin, joka on edellytys kilpailukyvyn säilymiseen muuttuvassa toimintaympäristössä.

During the recent years, collaboration with Chinese universities has aroused growing interest among multinational companies (MNCs). Cross-cultural university-industry (U-I) collaboration creates various challenges in collaborative knowledge creation and innovation due to the differences e.g. between university and company motivation, objectives and activities. Also different values, norms, and means of actions result often in collisions and misunderstandings. This thesis examines the establishment of the relationships and the evolution of the collaboration between MNCs and Chinese universities. Empirical findings underscore that the partners in collaboration are required to possess research interest as well as capability to acquire, assimilate and exploit new external knowledge. Time and communication have a critical role in the evolution of the collaboration. In China the personal relationships, guanxi, play an important role. Collaborative knowledge creation requires a platform, Ba, which enables the creation of common understanding, commitment, trust and mutual respect. Empirical data has been collected through interviewing company experts and academe of Chinese universities from ICT and forest industries as well as attending panel discussions and meetings with the experts from the field of study.

Työn tavoitteen oli selvittää mitä erityspiirteitä suomalaisissa listaamattomissa osakeyhtiöissä on ja niiden pohjalta ymmärtää minkälainen hallituksen ja toimitusjohtajan välinen suhde on. Tutkimusmetodologia oli empiirinen eksploratiivinen tutkimus ja tutkimusmenetelmä oli kvalitatiivinen perustuen seitsemään teemahaastatteluun. Tutkimuksen tuloksena oli, että osakeyhtiöt ovat erilaisia perustuen yhtiön omistajamäärään, omistuksen hajaantumiseen ja omistajien aktiivisuuteen. Pääsääntöisesti omistajat ovat lähellä yhtiön toimin- taa. Omistajat rakentavat yrityskulttuuria palkkaamalla hallituksen jäseniksi kulloiseenkin tilanteeseen sopivimmat henkilöt. Suomalaisia toimitusjohtajia pidetään ihmiskäsitykseltään pääsääntöisesti stewardeina ja ihmiskäsitykseen vaikuttaa olennaisesti kulttuurimme. Luottamus on hallituksen ja toimitusjohtajan välisen suh- teen kulmakiviä.

Pro gradun tavoitteena oli löytää tärkeimmät seikat, jotka vaikuttavat kansainvälisen operaatiomuodon valintaan. Tutkimuskohteena olivat suomalaiset pienet tai keskisuuret tuotteistetut ohjelmistopalveluyritykset. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin kvalitatiivista tutkimusta sekä case-tutkimusta. Tutkimus koostui kahdesta osasta: teoreettinen osa sekä empiirinen kahden case yrityksen analyysi. Operaatiomuodon valintaan vaikuttavat tekijät jaettiin sisäisiin (yritys, tuote ja päätöksentekijä), ulkoisiin (ala ja maa) ja operaatiomuodon (kontrolli, riski, resurssit, joustavuus, tuotot ja kulut) tekijöihin. Teoreettisesti operaatiomuodon valinta on erittäin monimutkainen päätös ja sitä on tutkittu monelta kannalta. Tämä empiirinen tutkimus osoittaa, että yrityksen resurssit olivat tärkein vaikuttava tekijä molemmissa yrityksissä.

Job satisfaction has been a frequently studied concept in organizational behavior. Past research has shown that trust in top management is an important factor influencing job satisfaction. To date, little attention has been paid to safety climate perceptions as a possible predictor of job satisfaction. In our study we investigated the direct and interactive effects of trust in top management and individual-level perceptions of safety climate in predicting job satisfaction. The findings of this study point to the importance of positive perceptions of safety climate on employees' job satisfaction when trust in top management is low.

The aim of this study is to find out how Metso Paper’s marketing could better support sales and how sales people are executing marketing during the sales processes. This study is done from sales people’s point of view. The study is limited to cover only company’s internal environment. This research was executed through literature review and qualitative theme interviews, where 20 of Metso Paper’s sales people were interviewed. The interviewees were asked to tell their opinions about marketing’s support, marketing materials, information and the relationship between sales and marketing. The results of this study show that the relationship between marketing and sales is rather good, but there is still a great need for improvements. It is hoped that marketing would take more part in the selling processes. In addition, more information about the launches and schedules were also hoped for. Marketing is told to be quite Finland centric and sales people are wishing for more adopted marketing materials and occasions. It came up during the interviews, that sales people are not so willing to give regular feedback to marketing and quite often they think that marketing’s role in Metso Paper is not important at all.

New product launches are becoming more and more important to companies around the globe. Being first on the market is a good place to be, and it will mostly likely bring the best profits. Gaining that desired position requires a lot of work where cooperation inside as well as outside of the company need to be in line. This thesis discusses launching processes in a pharmaceutical firm. The topic is looked at from supply chain management's point of view where purchasing department's role is emphasized. Additionally, launching strategies related to launches are investigated and the idea of internal alignment is introduced. Moreover, the topic is examined in project and process management perspective; how with the tools of project and process management the launching processes could be improved. The main findings reveal that there are many improvement points in the current launching process. Problems in the areas of information exchange, leadership and internal alignment were discovered yet trust and confidence for the better future compound the interviewees. This study presents what are the most important factors for a successful product launch and how the current processes could be streamlined.

In a 2000 report entitled "Trust in government. Ethics measures in OECD countries," OECD Secretary-General Donald J. Johnston emphasized the fact that public ethics are considered as a keystone of good governance. Moreover, public ethics are a prerequisite to public trust, which is in turn vital not only to any public service, but also to any society in general. At the same time, transparency reforms have flourished over the last few years and have several times been designed as a response to public distrust. Therefore, ethics, transparency and trust are closely linked together in a supposed virtuous circle where transparency works as a factor of better public ethics and leads to more trust in government on the citizens' side. This article explores the links between transparency and levels of trust in 10 countries between 2007 and 2014, using open data indexes and access to information requests as proxies for transparency. A national ranking of transparency, based on requests submitted by citizens to the administration and open data indexes, is then proposed. Key findings show that there is no sharp decline of trust in government in all countries considered in this article, and that transparency and trust in government are not systematically positively associated. Therefore, this article challenges the common assumption, mostly found in the normative literature, about a positive interrelation between the two, where trust in government is conceived as a beneficial effect of administrative transparency.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää Etelä-Pohjanmaalla huonekaluja valmistavien yritysten kone- ja laiteinvestointien vaikutusta yritysten kannattavuuteen. Toisena tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia investointiprosessia tukevia asiantuntijapalveluja yritykset ovat käyttäneet teknologiainvestointien yhteydessä sekä millaisille palveluille yrityksillä on tarvetta. Kannattavuuden tarkastelu kohdistui viiden huonekalutehtaan tilinpäätöstietoihin. Tarkasteltavaan yritysryhmään valittiin yritykset, jotka ovat investoineet selkeästi EU:n keskimääräistä investointitasoa enemmän. Kannattavuusvertailun mittareiksi valittiin liikevaihdon määrä henkilöä kohden, käyttökate, liikevoitto ja sijoitetun pääoman tuotto. Palvelutarvekysely kohdistui myös viiteen yritykseen, jotka olivat osin samoja yrityksiä kuin kannattavuustarkastelussa. Haastattelun avulla kartoitettiin yritysten kone- ja laiteinvestointien suunnittelu- ja käyttöönottovaiheen asiantuntijapalveluiden käyttöä ja niistä saatuja kokemuksia sekä kysyttiin yritysten tarpeet uusille asiantuntijapalveluille. Kannattavuustutkimuksen tuloksena voidaan havaita, että keskimääräistä enemmän koneisiin ja laitteisiin investoineet huonekaluyritykset toimivat kannattavammin kuin ne yritykset, jotka eivät tee merkittäviä investointeja. Haastattelututkimuksen tuloksena voidaan todeta, että yritykset ovat käyttäneet pääasiassa oman tilitoimiston palveluja investointien kannattavuutta ja tuotantokapasiteettia arvioidessaan. Koneiden käyttöönotossa yritykset ovat käyttäneet lähinnä koneiden maahantuojien koulutus- ja asennuspalveluja. Uusina palvelutarpeina esiin nousi koneiden tekninen vertailu ja investointiavustusten ja -lainojen hakuprosessia tukevat palvelut.

The objective of this study was to examine how the customers of Larox Flowsys value environmental issues and how environmental issues affect their purchasing behaviour. A comparison between Larox peristaltic pumps and competing pump brands and types was also made in order to find out whether LPP pumps possess some more environmentally beneficial features that other pumps do not have. Finally, if the answers to the first two research questions show that a need for a new marketing message does exist, then the final stage is to select the most appropriate environmental arguments for Larox Flowsys. The empirical data in the study was collected from several different sources, but the main sources were the customer interviews and the outsourced market research. The data was analysed mainly by using content analysis, but theme formation and quantification were also utilized. The results showed that the customers do not consider environmental issues as a main purchasing criterion, but they may well be the criterion that differentiates the product from competing ones. The comparison proved that LPP pumps do possess some significant environmental benefits over competing pumps and therefore, the prerequisite for the use of environmental arguments exists. The final stage in the study was to select the proper environmental arguments for Larox Flowsys.

Value chain collaboration has been a prevailing topic for research, and there is a constantly growing interest in developing collaborative models for improved efficiency in logistics. One area of collaboration is demand information management, which enables improved visibility and decrease of inventories in the value chain. Outsourcing of non-core competencies has changed the nature of collaboration from intra-enterprise to cross-enterprise activity, and this together with increasing competition in the globalizing markets have created a need for methods and tools for collaborative work. The retailer part in the value chain of consumer packaged goods (CPG) has been studied relatively widely, proven models have been defined, and there exist several best practice collaboration cases. The information and communications technology has developed rapidly, offering efficient solutions and applications to exchange information between value chain partners. However, the majority of CPG industry still works with traditional business models and practices. This concerns especially companies operating in the upstream of the CPG value chain. Demand information for consumer packaged goods originates at retailers' counters, based on consumers' buying decisions. As this information does not get transferred along the value chain towards the upstream parties, each player needs to optimize their part, causing safety margins for inventories and speculation in purchasing decisions. The safety margins increase with each player, resulting in a phenomenon known as the bullwhip effect. The further the company is from the original demand information source, the more distorted the information is. This thesis concentrates on the upstream parts of the value chain of consumer packaged goods, and more precisely the packaging value chain. Packaging is becoming a part of the product with informative and interactive features, and therefore is not just a cost item needed to protect the product. The upstream part of the CPG value chain is distinctive, as the product changes after each involved party, and therefore the original demand information from the retailers cannot be utilized as such – even if it were transferred seamlessly. The objective of this thesis is to examine the main drivers for collaboration, and barriers causing the moderate adaptation level of collaborative models. Another objective is to define a collaborative demand information management model and test it in a pilot business situation in order to see if the barriers can be eliminated. The empirical part of this thesis contains three parts, all related to the research objective, but involving different target groups, viewpoints and research approaches. The study shows evidence that the main barriers for collaboration are very similar to the barriers in the lower part of the same value chain; lack of trust, lack of business case and lack of senior management commitment. Eliminating one of them – the lack of business case – is not enough to eliminate the two other barriers, as the operational model in this thesis shows. The uncertainty of the future, fear of losing an independent position in purchasing decision making and lack of commitment remain strong enough barriers to prevent the implementation of the proposed collaborative business model. The study proposes a new way of defining the value chain processes: it divides the contracting and planning process into two processes, one managing the commercial parts and the other managing the quantity and specification related issues. This model can reduce the resistance to collaboration, as the commercial part of the contracting process would remain the same as in the traditional model. The quantity/specification-related issues would be managed by the parties with the best capabilities and resources, as well as access to the original demand information. The parties in between would be involved in the planning process as well, as their impact for the next party upstream is significant. The study also highlights the future challenges for companies operating in the CPG value chain. The markets are becoming global, with toughening competition. Also, the technology development will most likely continue with a speed exceeding the adaptation capabilities of the industry. Value chains are also becoming increasingly dynamic, which means shorter and more agile business relationships, and at the same time the predictability of consumer demand is getting more difficult due to shorter product life cycles and trends. These changes will certainly have an effect on companies' operational models, but it is very difficult to estimate when and how the proven methods will gain wide enough adaptation to become standards.

The objective of the thesis is to enhance the understanding about the management of the front end phases of the innovation process in a networked environment. The thesis approaches the front end of innovation from three perspectives, including the strategy, processes and systems of innovation. The purpose of the use of different perspectives in the thesis is that of providing an extensive systemic view of the front end, and uncovering the complex nature of innovation management. The context of the research is the networked operating environment of firms. The unit of analysis is the firm itself or its innovation processes, which means that this research approaches the innovation networks from the point of view of a firm. The strategy perspective of the thesis emphasises the importance of purposeful innovation management, the innovation strategy of firms. The role of innovation processes is critical in carrying out innovation strategies in practice, supporting the development of organizational routines for innovation, and driving the strategic renewal of companies. The primary focus of the thesis from systems perspective is on idea management systems, which are defined as a part of innovation management systems, and defined for this thesis as any working combination of methodology and tools (manual or IT-supported) that enhance the management of innovations within their early phases. The main contribution of the thesis are the managerial frameworks developed for managing the front end of innovation, which purposefully “wire” the front end of innovation into the strategy and business processes of a firm. The thesis contributes to modern innovation management by connecting the internal and external collaboration networks as foundational elements for successful management of the early phases of innovation processes in a dynamic environment. The innovation capability of a firm is largely defined by its ability to rely on and make use of internal and external collaboration already during the front end activities, which by definition include opportunity identification and analysis, idea generation, profileration and selection, and concept definition. More specifically, coordination of the interfaces between these activities, and between the internal and external innovation environments of a firm is emphasised. The role of information systems, in particular idea management systems, is to support and delineate the innovation-oriented behaviour and interaction of individuals and organizations during front end activities. The findings and frameworks developed in the thesis can be used by companies for purposeful promotion of their front end processes. The thesis provides a systemic strategy framework for managing the front end of innovation – not as a separate process, but as an elemental bundle ofactivities that is closely linked to the overall innovation process and strategy of a firm in a distributed environment. The theoretical contribution of the thesis relies on the advancement of the open innovation paradigm in the strategic context of a firm within its internal and external innovation environments. This thesis applies the constructive research approach and case study methodology to provide theoretically significant results, which are also practically beneficial.
