Human sport doping control analysis is a complex and challenging task for anti-doping laboratories. The List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, updated annually by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), consists of hundreds of chemically and pharmacologically different low and high molecular weight compounds. This poses a considerable challenge for laboratories to analyze for them all in a limited amount of time from a limited sample aliquot. The continuous expansion of the Prohibited List obliges laboratories to keep their analytical methods updated and to research new available methodologies. In this thesis, an accurate mass-based analysis employing liquid chromatography - time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOFMS) was developed and validated to improve the power of doping control analysis. New analytical methods were developed utilizing the high mass accuracy and high information content obtained by TOFMS to generate comprehensive and generic screening procedures. The suitability of LC-TOFMS for comprehensive screening was demonstrated for the first time in the field with mass accuracies better than 1 mDa. Further attention was given to generic sample preparation, an essential part of screening analysis, to rationalize the whole work flow and minimize the need for several separate sample preparation methods. Utilizing both positive and negative ionization allowed the detection of almost 200 prohibited substances. Automatic data processing produced a Microsoft Excel based report highlighting the entries fulfilling the criteria of the reverse data base search (retention time (RT), mass accuracy, isotope match). The quantitative performance of LC-TOFMS was demonstrated with morphine, codeine and their intact glucuronide conjugates. After a straightforward sample preparation the compounds were analyzed directly without the need for hydrolysis, solvent transfer, evaporation or reconstitution. The hydrophilic interaction technique (HILIC) provided good chromatographic separation, which was critical for the morphine glucuronide isomers. A wide linear range (50-5000 ng/ml) with good precision (RSD<10%) and accuracy (±10%) was obtained, showing comparable or better performance to other methods used. In-source collision-induced dissociation (ISCID) allowed confirmation analysis with three diagnostic ions with a median mass accuracy of 1.08 mDa and repeatable ion ratios fulfilling WADA s identification criteria. The suitability of LC-TOFMS for screening of high molecular weight doping agents was demonstrated with plasma volume expanders (PVE), namely dextran and hydroxyethylstarch (HES). Specificity of the assay was improved, since interfering matrix compounds were removed by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). ISCID produced three characteristic ions with an excellent mean mass accuracy of 0.82 mDa at physiological concentration levels. In summary, by combining TOFMS with a proper sample preparation and chromatographic separation, the technique can be utilized extensively in doping control laboratories for comprehensive screening of chemically different low and high molecular weight compounds, for quantification of threshold substances and even for confirmation. LC-TOFMS rationalized the work flow in doping control laboratories by simplifying the screening scheme, expediting reporting and minimizing the analysis costs. Therefore LC-TOFMS can be exploited widely in doping control, and the need for several separate analysis techniques is reduced.

Gd1.95Eu0.4M0.01O3 (M = Li+ Na+ K+) nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion (LSC) method. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out to characterize their structural and luminescent properties. The excitation and emission spectra indicated that the phosphor could be well excited by UV light (243 nm) and emit red light about 612 nm. The effect of alkali co-dopant on PL properties has been examined. The results showed that incorporation of Li+, Na+ and K+ in to Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor would lead to a remarkable increase of photoluminescence. The PL intensity of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor was improved evidently by co-doping with Li+ ions whose radius is less than that of Gd3+ and hardly with Na+, K+ whose radius is larger than that of Gd3+. The effect of co-dopants on enhanced luminescence was mainly regarded as the result of a suitable local distortion of crystal field surrounding the Eu3+ activator. These results will play an important role in seeking some more effective co-dopants. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

While the effect of electrochemical doping on single-layer graphene (SG) with holes and electrons has been investigated, the effect of charge-transfer doping on SG has not been examined hitherto. Effects of varying the concentration of electron donor and acceptor molecules such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) on SG produced by mechanical exfoliation as well as by the reduction of single-layer graphene oxide have been investigated. TTF softens the G-band in the Raman spectrum, whereas TCNE stiffens the G-band. The full-width-at-half-maximum of the G-band increases on interaction with both TTF and TCNE. These effects are similar to those found with few-layer graphene, but in contrast to those found with electrochemical doping. A common feature between the two types of doping is found in the case of the 2-D band, which shows softening and stiffening on electron and hole doping, respectively. The experimental results are explained on the basis of the frequency shifts, electron-phonon coupling and structural inhomogeneities that are relevant to molecule-graphene interaction.

Tin (Sn) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were synthesized by sol-gel spin coating method using zinc acetate di-hydrate and tin chloride di-hydrate as the precursor materials. The films were deposited on glass and silicon substrates and annealed at different temperatures in air ambient. The agglomeration of grains was observed by the addition of Sn in ZnO film with an average grain size of 60 nm. The optical properties of the films were studied using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. The optical band gap energies were estimated at different concentrations of Sn. The MOS capacitors were fabricated using Sn doped ZnO films. The capacitance-voltage (C-V), dissipation vs. voltage (D-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were studied and the electrical resistivity and dielectric constant were estimated. The porosity and surface area of the films were increased with the doping of Sn which makes these films suitable for opto-electronic applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A giant magnetocaloric effect was found in series of Mn1-xCoxAs films epitaxied on GaAs (001). The maximum magnetic entropy change caused by a magnetic field of 4 T is as large as 25 J/kg K around room temperature, which is about twice the value of pure MnAs film. The observed small thermal hysteresis is more suitable for practical application. Growing of layered Mn1-xCoxAs films with Co concentration changing gradually may draw layered active magnetic regenerator refrigerators closer to practical application. Our experimental result may provide the possibility for the combination of magnetocaloric effect and microelectronic circuitry.

We compared two reflection-mode negative electron affinity (NEA) GaAs photocathode samples that are grown by molecular beam epitaxy with p-type beryllium doping. One sample is uniform doping, and another is gradient doping. Experimental curves of spectral response sensitivity and quantum efficiency are obtained. The thicknesses of the two cathodes are both 2.6 mu m. The integrated sensitivity of the uniform doping one is 1966 mu A/lm, and that of the gradient-doping one is 2421 mu A/lm. The escape probability and diffusion length are fitted from the spectral response curves. For the uniform-doping sample, the escape probability is 0.45 and the diffusion length is 5 mu m. For the gradient-doping sample, the escape probability is 0.55 and the diffusion length is 5.5 mu m. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Low-indium-content self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (SAQD) were grown using solid-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and investigated by atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Silicon, which was doped at different quantum dot (QD) growth stages, markedly increased the density of QD. We obtained high density In0.35Ga0.65As/GaAs(001) quantum dots of 10(11)/cm(2) at a growth temperature of 520degreesC. PL spectra and distribution statistics show the high quality and uniformity of our silicon-doped samples. The density increment can be explained using the lattice-hardening mechanism due to silicon doping.

The surfactant effect of isoelectronic indium doping during metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth of cubic GaN on GaAs (1 0 0) substrates was studied. Its influence on the optical properties and surface morphology was investigated by using room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and atomic force microscopy. It is shown that the sample with small amount of In-doping has a narrower PL linewidth, and a smoother surface than undoped cubic GaN layers. A slight red shift of the near-band-edge emission peak was observed. These results revealed that, for small TMIn flow rates, indium played the role of the surfactant doping and effectively improved the cubic GaN film quality; for large TMIn flow rates, the alloying formation of Ga1-xInxN might have occurred. N-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterostructure has been grown by a disilane (Si2H6) gas and Ge solid sources molecular beam epitaxy system using phosphine (PH3) and diborane (B2H6) as n- and p-type in situ doping sources, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements show that the grown heterostructure has a good quality, the boron doping is confined to the SiGe base layer, and the Ge has a trapezoidal profile. Postgrowth P implantation was performed to prepare a good ohmic contact to the emitter. Heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been fabricated using the grown heterostructure and a common-emitter current gain of 75 and a cut-off frequency of 20 GHz at 300 K have been obtained. Three n-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterostructures with different layer thickness and doping concentration have been grown by a home-made gas source molecular-beam epitaxy (GSMBE) system using phosphine (PH3) and diborane (B2H6) as n-and p-type in situ doping sources, respectively. Heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) have been fabricated using these structures and a current gain of 40 at 300 K and 62 at 77 K have been obtained. The influence of thickness and doping concentration of the deposited layers on the current gain of the HBTs is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

As reported by other authors, we have also observed that the Si growth rate decreases with increasing phosphine (PH3) flow rate in gas source-Si molecular beam epitaxy using phosphorous (P) as a n-type dopant. Why small quantity PH3 can affect Si growth rate? Up to now, the quantitative characterization of PH3 flow influence on Si growth rate is little known. In this letter, the PH, influence will be analyzed in detail and a model considering strong P surface segregation and its absorption of hydrogen will be proposed to characterize the effect. High-quality GaN epilayers have been grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy using ammonia as the nitrogen source. During the growth, the growth rate is up to 1.2 mu m/h and can be varied from 0.3 to 1.2 mu m. The unintentional n-type doping as low as 7x10(17) cm(-3) was obtained at room temperature. Low-temperature photoluminescence spectrum was dominated by near-edge emission without deep-level related luminescence, indicative of high-quality epilayers. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. We report the molecular beam epitaxy growth of 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs quantum-dot (QD) lasers with high characteristic temperature T-0. The active region of the lasers consists of five-layer InAs QDs with p-type modulation doping. Devices with a stripe width of 4 mu m and a cavity length of 1200 mu m are fabricated and tested in the pulsed regime under different temperatures. It is found that T-0 of the QD lasers is as high as 532K in the temperature range from 10 degrees C to 60 degrees C. In addition, the aging test for the lasers under continuous wave operation at 100 degrees C for 72 h shows almost no degradation, indicating the high crystal quality of the devices.

Capacitance-voltage, photoluminescence (PL), and deep level transient spectroscopy techniques were used to investigate deep electron states in n-type Al-doped ZnS1-xTex epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The integrated intensity of the PL spectra obtained from Al-doped ZnS0.977Te0.023 is lower than that of undoped ZnS0.977Te0.023, indicating that some of the Al atoms form nonradiative deep traps. Deep level transient Fourier spectroscopy (DLTFS) spectra of the Al-doped ZnS1-xTex (x=0, 0.017, 0.04, and 0.046, respectively) epilayers reveal that Al doping leads to the formation of two electron traps 0.21 and 0.39 eV below the conduction band. DLTFS results suggest that in addition to the roles of Te as a component of the alloy as well as isoelectronic centers, Te is also involved in the formation of an electron trap, whose energy level with respect to the conduction band decreases as Te composition increases. Our results show that only a small fraction of Al atoms forms nonradiative deep defects, indicating clearly that Al is indeed a very good donor impurity for ZnS1-xTex epilayers in the range of Te composition being studied in this work. We have recently found evidence of new donor acceptor pair (DAP) luminescence in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown films. A variety of nominally undoped samples have been studied by photoluminescence (PL) over a temperature range of 5-300 K. The samples show intensive luminescence al energies of 3.404-3.413 eV varying with different sample at 5 K, as well as a fairly strong (DX)-X-0 line at low temperature. We attribute the Line at 3.404-3.413 eV to DAP recombination which is over 0.1 eV different from the well known DAP caused by ME-doping in GaN. The DAP line shows fine structure. it even predominates in one particular sample. The peak position shifts to higher energy with temperature increasing from 5 up to 70 K, and as the excitation laser intensity increases. The data are consistent with DAP luminescence involving an acceptor level of about 90 meV (presumably carbon) above the valence band edge in GaN. It is much shallower than the acceptor level of 250 meV produced by the p-type dopant Mg which is commonly used at present. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
