Following earlier work by Audretsch et al. (2002), we assume that an optimal size-class structure exists, in terms of achieving maximal economic growth rates. Such an optimal structure is likely to exist as economies need a balance between the core competences of large firms (such as exploitation of economies of scale) and those of smaller firms (such as flexibility and exploration of new ideas). Accordingly, changes in size-class structure (i.e., changes in the relative shares in economic activity accounted for by micro, small, medium-sized and large firms) may affect macro-economic growth. Using a unique data base of the EU-27 countries for the period 2002-2008 for five broad sectors of economic activity and four size-classes, we find empirical support which suggests that, on average for these countries over this period, the share of micro and large firms may have been ‘above optimum’ (particularly in lower income EU countries) whereas the share of medium-sized firms may have been ‘below optimum’ (particularly in higher income EU countries). This evidence suggests that the transition from a ‘managed’ to an ‘entrepreneurial’ economy (Audretsch and Thurik, 2001) has not been completed yet in all countries of the EU-27. Palveluinnovaatioprosessi voidaan jakaa 5 eri vaiheeseen: strategiasidonnaisuus, perustutkimus, suorituskyvyn analysointi, systeemimuutokset sekä kaupallistaminen. Tästä palveluinnovaatioprosessista voidaan johtaa perustutkimusprosessi rahoitusalalle: strategiasidonnaisuus, ideoiden luonti ja karsinta, suorituskyvyn analysointi, differointimahdollisuuksien kartoittaminen ja palveluinnovaation myynti yritysjohdolle sekä osakkaille. Strategiasidonnaisuudella varmistetaan, että yritys pysyy omalla osaamisalueellansa hyödyntämällä omia ydinkompetenssejaan. Perustutkimus osana palveluinnovaatioprosessia selvittää oleellisimmat tiedot markkinatilanteesta sekä toimii ohjaavana että karsivana tekijänä uuden tuotteen jatkotoimenpiteille. Yrityksen kyvykkyyksien mittaaminen perustutkimusta varten on oleellinen vaihe uuden palvelun vaatimien liiketoiminnallisten muutosten määrittämiseksi. Tuotedifferoinnilla voidaan luoda kilpailullista etua tuotteiden puolesta homogeenisilla markkinoilla, joissa kilpailu tapahtuu pääosin hinnoittelussa. Rahoitusalalla tuotedifferointi voi muodostua haastavaksi kuluttajien suhtautuessa konservatiivisesti uusiin tuotteisiin. Makroekonomisten tekijöiden perusteella voidaan päätellä, että suomalaiset kuluttajat ottavat lainaa tulevaisuudessakin. Asuntolaina on ollut lainamarkkinoilla luottokannan kasvun veturina ja tästä syystä uudet asuntolainan kaltaiset tuotteet voisivat olla menestyksekkäitä. Kilpailu asuntolainamarkkinoilla kulminoituu kolmen hallitsevan kilpailijan ympärille: Osuuspankki, Sampo Pankki ja Nordea. Asuntolainan kaltainen käänteinen asuntolaina voisi olla menestys markkinoilla, jos sitä pystyttäisiin differoimaan kylliksi. Markkinapotentiaali pelkälle käänteiselle asuntolainalle on tällä hetkellä liian alhainen. GE Money Finland ei myöskään pysty tarjoamaan tuotetta yhtä kilpailulliseen hintaan kuin kilpailijansa. GE Money Finlandin tulisi edellä mainituista syistä johtuen pyrkiä differoimaan käänteisen asuntolainan kaltaista tuotettaan Heloc, jotta se menestyisi markkinoilla.

Tutkimus käsittelee strategian jalkauttamista. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata millainen on strategian jalkauttamista tukeva optimaalinen toimintaympäristö kilpailuedun lähteenä. Tavoitteeseen päästään neljän alaongelman avulla: mistä elementeistä toimintaympäristö koostuu, millaisia yhteyksiä elementeillä on toisiinsa, mitkä elementeistä liittyvät johtamiseen ja millainen rooli keskijohdolla on strategian jalkauttamisessa. Tapaustutkimus on luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen ja tutkimusote normatiivinen. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys kattaa kuusi kokonaisuutta: strategian ja strategisen johtamisen, ulkoisen ja sisäisen toimintaympäristön, kilpailuedun, kulttuurin sekä johtamisen ja operatiivisen toiminnan. Johtaminen ja operatiivinen toiminta koostuu seitsemästä elementistä: asiakkaat, yhteys, yhteisöllisyys, kontrolli, kommunikointi, ydinkyvykkyydet ja koalitio, jotka parhaimmillaan muodostavat toisiaan tukevan syklin. Keskijohdon rooli korostuu johtamisen ja operatiivisen toiminnan kokonaisuudessa.

Työn tarkoituksena on kehittää suorittavalle esimiestasolle työkalu, millä voidaan mitata esimiehen kompetensseja. S-market esimiehen ydinosaamiset työssä jakautuvat kahteen kokonaisuuteen vuorovaikutus- ja ketjuyksikön johtamiseen. Työn tavoitteena on myös tarkastella millä esimiehen ydinosaamisella on merkitystä työtyytyväisyyteen ja yrityksen tulokseen. Tutkimus on kvantitatiivinen ja sen aineisto on verkkokyselylomakkeen avulla kerätystä 129 vastauksesta. Verkkokyselylomakkeen väittämät ovat rakennettu esimiestyön kompetensseista, jotka pohjautuvat tutkielman teoriaan. Verkkokyselyn, työtyytyväisyyden ja tuloksen lukuarvot on analysoitu tilastollisella tulostenkäsittelyohjelmalla, SPSS:llä. Työtyytyväisyystulokset ovat koottu tutkimukseen osallistuneen viidentoista S-marketin työtyytyväisyystutkimuksen tuloksista vuodelta 2008. Tuloksen mittareina tutkielmassa on käytetty samojen S-markettien työtehokkuutta ja toimintakateprosenttia vuodelta 2008. Työn tulokset vahvistivat sen, että esimiestyöllä on suora syy-seuraussuhde työtyytyväisyyteen ja tuloksellisuuteen. Tutkimustuloksien perusteella esimieskäyttämisen vaikutus työtyytyväisyyden kokemiseen on vahva. Hyvällä vuorovaikutusjohtamisella tuloksien perusteella oli vaikutusta työtyytyväisyyteen. Tuloksista kävi ilmi, että työtyytyväisyyteen esimiehen kompetensseista eniten vaikuttivat yksilöllinen huomiointi, tavoitteisiin kannustaminen ja motivointi sekä asiakaslähtöisyys. Tuloksen mittareihin eniten vaikutti tulos- ja tavoitejohtaminen. Tuloksellisuuteen vaikuttavat tutkimuksen mukaan esimiehen jämäkkä ja vaativa tavoitteisiin ohjaava toiminta sekä päätöksenteko ja organisointikyky. Tarkempien ja täsmällisimpien S-market esimiehen kompetenssien löytämiseksi kehitysehdotuksena tutkielmassa on laajemman tutkimusaineiston käsittely neljän faktorin avulla.

The aim of the thesis was to study quality management with process approach and to find out how to utilize process management to improve quality. The operating environment of organizations has changed. Organizations are focusing on their core competences and networking with suppliers and customers to ensure more effective and efficient value creation for the end customer. Quality management is moving from inspection of the output to prevention of problems from occurring in the first place and management thinking is changing from functional approach to process approach. In the theoretical part of the thesis, it is studied how to define quality, how to achieve good quality, how to improve quality, and how to make sure the improvement goes on as never ending cycle. A selection of quality tools is introduced. Process approach to quality management is described and compared to functional approach, which is the traditional way to manage operations and quality. The customer focus is also studied, and it is presented, that to ensure long term customer commitment, organization needs to react to changing customer requirements and wishes by constantly improving the processes. In the experimental part the theories are tested in a process improvement business case. It is shown how to execute a process improvement project starting from defining the customer requirements, continuing to defining the process ownership, roles and responsibilities, boundaries, interfaces and the actual process activities. The control points and measures are determined for the process, as well as the feedback and corrective action process, to ensure continual improvement can be achieved and to enable verification that customer requirements are fulfilled.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on analysoida kokonaisratkaisuja tarjoavan järjestelmätoimittajan suorituskyvyn mittaamisen suunnittelua johdon päätöksenteon tukivälineeksi. Alitavoitteena oli suunnitella mittaristo case-yrityksen valitulle yksikölle sekä konsernitasolle. Tutkimuksen myötä havaittiin tarpeelliseksi tunnistaa järjestelmätoimittajan toimialatason vahvimmat ydinkyvykkyydet ja esittää ratkaisuja niiden mittaamiselle. Tutkimuksesta rajattiin mittariston hyödyntäminen yksilötason ohjauksessa. Tutkimusta lähestyttiin toiminta-analyyttisenä tapaustutkimuksena. Tutkimuksen yhteydessä määriteltiin järjestelmätoimittaja teollisen palveluliiketoiminnan toimijaksi, jonka mittaus painottuu asiakaslähtöisen toiminnan edistämiseen. Suurimmat haasteet muodostuivat aineettoman pääoman, pääosin uudistuvan ja uuden liiketoiminnan verkostojen mittaamisesta. Tutkimustuloksena voitiin havaita, että toimialatason keskeisimpiin ydinkyvykkyyksiin ja case-yrityksen linjaamiin menestystekijöihin pohjautunut tarkastelu onnistui tunnistamaan keskeisiä ongelmakohtia järjestelmätoimittajan mittariston suunnittelussa. Merkittävimmät toimenpidesuositukset ja laaditut mittariehdotukset painottavat asiakkaan prosessien tuntemista, oman osaamisen johtamista asiakkaan prosesseihin soveltuviksi, uusien innovaatioiden ja kyvykkyyksien luomista, erilaisten verkostojen tunnistamista ja kehittämistä, kyvykkyyksien johtamista ja tuotekeskeisen myynnin kehittämistä palvelukeskeiseen suuntaan. Tutkimus esittää näihin tuloksiin pohjautuvan mittariston ja prosessin aikana syntyneet mittariehdotukset.

Companies are increasingly under pressure to be more efficient both in terms of costs and overall performance and thus, they seek new ways to develop their products and innovate. For pharmaceutical industry it can take several decades to launch a new drug to the markets. Since pharmaceutical industry is one of the most research-intensive industries, is outsourcing one way to enhance the R&D processes of such companies. It is said that outsourcing to offshore locations is vastly more challenging and complicated than any other exporting activity or inter-company relationship that has evoked a lot of discussion. By outsourcing strategically, companies must also thoroughly focus on transaction costs and core competences. Today, the suppliers are looked for beyond national boundaries and furthermore, the location of the outsourcing activity must also be thoroughly considered. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to analyze what is known of strategic outsourcing of pharmaceutical R&D to India. In order to meet the purpose of the study, this study tries to answer three sub-questions set to it: first, what is strategic outsourcing, second, why pharmaceutical companies utilize strategic outsourcing of R&D and last, why pharmaceutical companies select India as the location for outsourcing their R&D. The study is a qualitative study. The purpose of the study was approached by a literature review with systematic elements and sub-questions were analyzed through different relevant theories, such as theory of transaction costs, core competences and location advantages. Applicable academic journal articles were comprehensively included in the study. The data was collected from electronic journal article databases using key words and almost only peer-reviewed, as new as possible articles were included. Also both the reference list of the included articles and article recommendations from professionals generated more articles for inclusion. The data was analyzed through thematization that resulted in themes that illuminate the purpose of the study and sub-questions. As an outcome of the analysis, each of the theory chapters in the study represents one sub-question. The literature used in this study revealed that strategic outsourcing of R&D is increasingly used in pharmaceutical industry and the major motives to practice it has to do with lowering costs, accessing skilled labor, resources and knowledge and enhancing their quality while speeding up the introduction of new drugs. Mainly for the above-mentioned motives India is frequently chosen as the target location for pharma outsourcers. Still, the literature is somewhat incomplete in this complex phenomenon and more research is needed.

Over the past decades, companies’ interest in controlling indirect sourcing process has increased. New indirect procurement strategies developed for the companies are needed in order to manage their indirect costs. New cost management strategies allow companies to improve their core competences. The research methodology and used in this thesis is qualitative. The theory is based on scientific publications. Empirical data given by the case organization, and was collected in the company’s own systems and in project steering meetings. The purpose of the study was to select a new electronic system for the company and give options for the company to reduce case organization’s indirect costs. The result showed that the most effective indirect cost management strategy was adopting a new electronic procurement system.

O presente trabalho visa identificar os fatores percebidos como críticos para o sucesso na indústria de consoles domésticos de videogame, e novos fatores importantes que possam surgir para o sucesso desta indústria dinâmica e em constante evolução. Para esta análise, utiliza-se como base o referencial teórico de estratégia emergente, valor da inovação, gerenciamento e dinâmica da cadeia de valor, e economia da informação. Faz-se uma revisão histórica da indústria, a cada geração de consoles, e um descritivo do seu momento atual, seguido de um detalhamento dos participantes da indústria e o mapeamento da cadeia de valor para os consoles domésticos de videogames, baseado na literatura existente e nas entrevistas com especialistas de mercado. Foi feito um estudo de caso com os dois líderes atuais deste mercado, Sony e Microsoft, e suas respectivas gerações de consoles com uma analise comparativa de suas cadeias de valor. A análise dos casos busca mostrar por que estas empresas entraram neste mercado, como tentaram utilizar suas core competences para obter sucesso em um mercado de forte economia de rede, marcado pelo surgimento freqüente de tecnologias de ruptura e novos entrantes, alta velocidade evolutiva do setor provocada pelos movimentos freqüentes de poder entre os elos da cadeia, em geral ao redor do fabricante do console e dos publishers dos jogos. Com base nesta análise, foram determinados os fatores críticos de sucesso da indústria até o momento e identificar os fatores críticos adicionais que estão surgindo para a última geração de consoles iniciada ao final de 2005, cuja competição tornou-se relevante ao final de 2006.

O objetivo do presente estudo é verificar quais são as competências comuns nas 6 empresas analisadas e quais se despontam na carreira de jovens executivos entre 24 e 35 anos, o que propicia a construção de um caminho para o crescimento profissional. Esta pesquisa caracterizou-se por ser qualitativa, exploratória, descritiva e documental. O levantamento de dados foi realizado através de fontes bibliográficas e de uma pesquisa documental no banco de dados de uma empresa de consultoria multinacional, com sede em São Paulo. As competências que mais se destacam foram: paixão pelo que faz em três empresas, foco em resultados, em duas e capacidade de realização, em uma. Conclui-se que as empresas estão à procura de executivos que tenham dedicação, arrojo, criatividade, empreendedorismo, facilidade de negociação e que busquem resultados. Verificou-se também que estes profissionais, além de sua formação acadêmica, devem centrar-se em seu desenvolvimento pessoal na busca pela qualificação nessas competências.

Paper I: Corporate aging and internal resource allocation Abstract Various observers argue that established firms are at a disadvantage in pursuing new growth opportunities. In this paper, we provide systematic evidence that established firms allocate fewer resources to high-growth lines of business. However, we find no evidence of inefficient resource allocation in established firms. Redirecting resources from high-growth to low-growth lines of business does not result in lower profitability. Also, resource allocation towards new growth opportunities does not increase when managers of established firms are exposed to takeover and product market threats. Rather, it seems that conservative resource allocation strategies are driven by pressures to meet investors’ expectations. Our empirical evidence, thus, favors the hypothesis that established firms wisely choose to allocate fewer resources to new growth opportunities as external pressures force them to focus on efficiency rather than novelty (Holmström 1989). Paper II: Corporate aging and asset sales Abstract This paper asks whether divestitures are motivated by strategic considerations about the scope of the firm’s activities. Limited managerial capacity implies that exploiting core competences becomes comparatively more attractive than exploring new growth opportunities as firms mature. Divestitures help stablished firms free management time and increase the focus on core competences. The testable implication of this attention hypothesis is that established firms are the main sellers of assets, that their divestiture activity increases when managerial capacity is scarcer, that they sell non-core activities, and that they return the divestiture proceeds to the providers of capital instead of reinvesting them in the firm. We find strong empirical support for these predictions. Paper III: Corporate aging and lobbying expenditures Abstract Creative destruction forces constantly challenge established firms, especially in competitive markets. This paper asks whether corporate lobbying is a competitive weapon of established firms to counteract the decline in rents over time. We find a statistically and economically significant positive relation between firm age and lobbying expenditures. Moreover, the documented age-effect is weaker when firms have unique products or operate in concentrated product markets. To address endogeneity, we use industry distress as an exogenous nonlegislative shock to future rents and show that established firms are relatively more likely to lobby when in distress. Finally, we provide empirical evidence that corporate lobbying efforts by established firms forestall the creative destruction process. In sum, our findings suggest that corporate lobbying is a competitive weapon of established firms to retain profitability in competitive environments.

The competence evaluation promoted by the European High Education Area entails a very important methodological change that requires guiding support to help lecturers carry out this new and complex task. In this regard, the Technical University of Madrid (UPM, by its Spanish acronym) has financed a series of coordinated projects with the objective of developing a model for teaching and evaluating core competences and providing support to lecturers. This paper deals with the problem-solving competence. The first step has been to elaborate a guide for teachers to provide a homogeneous way to asses this competence. This guide considers several levels of acquisition of the competence and provides the rubrics to be applied for each one. The guide has been subsequently validated with several pilot experiences. In this paper we will explain the problem-solving assessment guide for teachers and will show the pilot experiences that has been carried out. We will finally justify the validity of the method to assess the problem-solving competence.

A ação reduzida do Estado brasileiro com relação ao atendimento das necessidades das crianças e adolescentes em situação de rua dá espaço para a atuação de novos atores sociais. Alguns destes têm como objetivo promover a cidadania do país, como os participantes do terceiro setor: ONGs que enfrentam diversos obstáculos para realizar suas missões. Dentre estes desafios encontra-se a gestão de pessoas. O presente trabalho propõe a análise da gestão de pessoas e a construção participativa de um modelo de competências em uma Organização Não Governamental Projeto Meninos e Meninas de Rua, a partir da combinação das metodologias qualitativas de estudo de caso único e pesquisa-ação, tendo como embasamento a Gestão Social. A pesquisa de campo foi desenvolvida por meio de diferentes fontes de evidências: entrevistas, questionários, observação, análise de documentos e registros e artefatos físicos, que permitiu a construção participativa de um modelo com cinco (5) competências essenciais/institucionais: Diagnóstico e Planejamento, Alinhamento Institucional, Comunicação, Resiliência e Defesa, Garantia e Promoção de Direitos, tendo como foco deste trabalho o olhar para os Educadores Sociais que atuam na instituição.
