Rapid changes in working life and competence requirements of different professions have increased interest in workplace learning. It is considered an effective way to learn and update professional skills by performing daily tasks in an authentic environment. Especially, ensuring a supply of skilled future workers is a crucial issue for firms facing tight competition and a shortage of competent employees due to the retirement of current professionals. In order to develop and make the most of workplace learning, it is important to focus on workplace learning environments and the individual characteristics of those participating in workplace learning. The literature has suggested various factors that influence adults' and professionals’ workplace learning of profession-related skills, but lacks empirical studies on contextual and individual-related factors that positively affect students' workplace learning. Workers with vocational education form a large group in modern firms. Therefore, elements of vocational students’ successful workplace learning during their studies, before starting their career paths, need to be examined. To fill this gap in the literature, this dissertation examines contributors to vocational students’ workplace learning in Finland, where students’ workplace learning is included in the vocational education and training system. The study is divided into two parts: the introduction, comprised of the overview of the relevant literature and the conclusion of the entire study, and five separate articles. Three of the articles utilize quantitative methods and two use qualitative methods to examine factors that contribute to vocational students’ workplace learning. The results show that, from the students’ perspective, attitudinal, motivational, and organizationrelated factors enhance the student’s development of professionalism during the on-the-job learning period. Specifically, the organization-related factors such as innovative climate, guidance, and interactions with seniors have a strong positive impact on the students’ perceived development of professional skills because, for example, the seniors’ guidance and provision of new viewpoints for the tasks helps the vocational students to gain autonomy at work performance. A multilevel analysis shows that of those factors enhancing workplace learning from the student perspective, innovative climate, knowledge transfer accuracy, and the students’ performance orientation were significantly related to the workplace instructors’ assessment regarding the students’ professional performance. Furthermore, support from senior colleagues and the students’ self-efficacy were both significantly associated with the formal grades measuring how well the students managed to learn necessary professional skills. In addition, the results suggest that the students’ on-the-job learning can be divided into three main phases, of which two require efforts from both the student and the on-the-job learning organization. The first phase includes the student’s application of basic professional skills, demonstration of potential in performing daily tasks, and orientation provided by the organization at the beginning of the on-the-job learning period. In the second phase, the student actively develops profession-related skills by performing daily tasks, thus learning a fluent working style while observing the seniors’ performance. The organization offers relevant tasks and follows the student’s development. The third level indicates a student who has reached the professional level described as a full occupation. The results suggest that constructing the vocational students’ successful on-the-job learning period requires feedback from seniors, opportunities to learn to manage entire work processes, self-efficacy on the part of the students, proactive behavior, and initiative in learning. The study contributes to research on workplace learning in three ways: firstly, it identifies the key individual- and organization-based factors that influence the vocational students’ successful on-the-job learning from their perspective and examines mutual relationships between these factors. Second, the study provides knowledge of how the factors related to the students’ view of successful workplace learning are associated with the workplace instructors’ perspective and the formal grades. Third, the present study finds elements needed to construct a successful on-the-job learning for the students.

The objective of this research was to study the role of key individuals in facilitation of technology enabled bottom-up innovation in large organization context. The development of innovation was followed from the point of view of individual actor (key individual) in two cases, through three levels: individual, team and organization, by using knowledge creation and innovation models. This study provides theoretical synthesis and framework through which the study is driven. The results of the study indicate, that in bottom-up initiated innovations the role of key individuals is still crucial, but innovation today is collective effort and there acts several entrepreneurial key individuals: innovator, user champion and organizational sponsor, whose collaboration and developing interaction drives innovation further. The team work is functional and fluent, but it meets great problems in interaction with organization. The large organizations should develop its practices and ability to react on emerging bottom-up initiations, in order to embed innovation to organization and gain sustainable innovation. In addition, bottom-up initiated innovations are demonstrations of peoples knowing, tacit knowledge and therefore renewing of an organization.

Työn tavoitteena on tunnistaa toiminnallisia riskitekijöitä rahoituspalveluita tarjoavan yrityksen IT-organisaatiossa sekä löytää arkipäiväisiä keinoja hallita näitä riskejä. Työssä riskejä on myös tarkasteltu mahdollisen ulkoistuksen yhteydessä. Fuusiot ovat yleisiä rahoitusalan yrityksissä. Yhteenliittymien tuloksena yritysten IT-arkkitehtuuri voi olla monimutkainen ja kulttuurierot yrityksessä suuria. Synergia- ja mittakaavaetuja saadakseen yritys keskittää toimintojaan ja IT-ratkaisujaan. Riskien tunnistaminen on riskienhallintaprosessin tärkein vaihe. Tässä tutkimuksessa riskit ja riskitekijät tunnistettiin itsearvioinnin avulla kysymyssarjoja hyväksikäyttäen. Monet riskitekijät liittyivät sisäisen valvonnan ja seurannan puutteisiin. Myöhemmin näille riskeille pohdittiin työryhmässä käytännönläheisiä hallintakeinoja. Yritys voi siirtää tai jakaa IT -riskejä ulkoistamalla. Ulkoistaminen voi kuitenkin tuoda mukaan myös uusia riskitekijöitä. Ennen ulkoistamispäätöstä yrityksen sisäisten prosessien ja organisaation on oltava järjestyksessä, jotta sopimuksen kannattavuutta voidaan verrata luotettavasti saman palvelun tuottamiseen sisäisesti.

Organizations gain resources, skills and technologies to find out the ultimate mix of capabilities to be a winner in the competitive market. These are all important factors that need to be taken into account in organizations operating in today's business environment. So far, there are no significant studies on the organizational capabilities in the field of PSM. The literature review shows that the PSM capabilities need to be studied more comprehensively. This study attempts to reveal and fill this gap by providing the PSM capability matrix that identifies the key PSM capabilities approached from two angles: there are three primary PSM capabilities and nine subcapabilities and, moreover, the individual and organizational PSM capabilities are identified and evaluated. The former refers to the PSM capability matrix of this study which is based on the strategic and operative PSM capabilities that complement the economic ones, while the latter relates to the evaluation of the PSM capabilities, such as the buyer profiles of individual PSM capabilities and the PSMcapability map of the organizational ones. This is a constructive case study. The aim is to define what the purchasing and supply management capabilities are and how they can be evaluated. This study presents a PSM capability matrix to identify and evaluate the capabilities to define capability gaps by comparing the ideal level of PSM capabilities to the realized ones. The research questions are investigated with two case organizations. This study argues that PSM capabilities can be classified into three primary categories with nine sub-categories and, thus, a PSM capability matrix with four evaluation categories can be formed. The buyer profiles are moreover identified to reveal the PSM capability gap. The resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities view (DCV) are used to define the individual and organizational capabilities. The PSM literature is also used to define the capabilities. The key findings of this study are i) the PSM capability matrix to identify the PSM capabilities, ii) the evaluation of the capabilities to define PSM capability gaps and iii) the presentation of the buyer profiles to identify the individual PSM capabilities and to define the organizational PSM capabilities. Dynamic capabilities are also related to the PSM capability gap. If a gap is identified, the organization can renew their PSM capabilities and, thus, create mutual learning and increase their organizational capabilities. And only then, there is potential for dynamic capabilities. Based on this, the purchasing strategy, purchasing policy and procedures should be identified and implemented dynamically.

This research focuses on the career experiences of women managers in the IT industry in China and Finland, two countries with different cultures, policies, size of population, and social and economic structures regarding work-life support and equal opportunities. The object of this research is to present a cross-cultural comparison of women’s career experiences and how women themselves understand and account for their careers. The study explores how the macro and the micro levels of cultural and social processes become manifested in the lives of individual women. The main argument in this thesis is that culture plays a crucial role in making sense of women’s career experiences, although its role should be understood through its interrelationship with other social processes, e.g., institutional relations, social policies, industrial structures and organizations, as well as globalization. The interrelationship of a series of cultural and social processes affects individuals’ attitudes to, and arrangement and organization of, their work and family lives. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part introduces the research topic and discusses the overall results. The second part comprises five research papers. The main research question of the study is: How do cultural and social processes affect the experiences of women managers? Quantitative and qualitative research methods, which include in-depth interviews, Q-methodology, interpretive analysis, and questionnaires, are used in the study. The main theoretical background is culturally sensitive career theory and the theory of individual differences. The results of this study are viewed through a feminist lens. The research methodology applied allows new explorations on how demographic factors, work experiences, lifestyle issues, and organizational cultures can jointly affect women’s managerial careers. The sample group used in the research is 42 women managers working in IT companies in China (21) and Finland (21). The results of the study illustrate the impact of history, tradition, culture, institutional relations, social politics, industry and organizations, and globalization on the careers of women managers. It is claimed that the role of culture – cultural norms within nations and organizations – is of great importance in the relationship of gender and work. Women’s managerial careers are affected by multiple factors (personal, social and cultural) reflecting national and inter-individual differences. The results of the study contribute to research on careers, adding particularly to the literature on gender, work and culture, and offering a complex and holistic perspective for a richer understanding of pluralism and global diversity. The results of the study indicate how old and new career perspectives are evidenced in women managers in the IT industry. The research further contributes to an understanding of women’s managerial careers from a cross-culture perspective. In addition, the study contributes to the literature on culture and extends understanding of Hofstede’s work. Further, most traditional career theories do not perceive the importance of culture in determining an individual’s career experience and this study richens understanding of women managers’ careers and has considerable implications for international human resource management. The results of this study emphasize the need, when discussing women managers’ careers, to understand the ways by which gendering is produced rather than merely examining gender differences. It is argued that the meaning of self-knowledge is critical. Further, the environment where the careers under study develop differs greatly; China and Finland are very different – culturally, historically and socially. The findings of this study should, therefore, be understood as a holistic, specific, and contextually-bound.

Organizational creativity is increasingly important for organizations aiming to survive and thrive in complex and unexpectedly changing environments. It is precondition of innovation and a driver of an organization’s performance success. Whereas innovation research increasingly promotes high-involvement and participatory innovation, the models of organizational creativity are still mainly based on an individual-creativity view. Likewise, the definitions of organizational creativity and innovation are somewhat equal, and they are used as interchangeable constructs, while on the other hand they are seen as different constructs. Creativity is seen as generation of novel and useful ideas, whereas innovation is seen as the implementation of these ideas. The research streams of innovation and organizational creativity seem to be advancing somewhat separately, although together they could provide many synergy advantages. Thereby, this study addresses three main research gaps. First, as the knowledge and knowing is being increasingly expertized and distributed in organizations, the conceptualization of organizational creativity needs to face that perspective, rather than relying on the individual-creativity view. Thus, the conceptualization of organizational creativity needs clarification, especially as an organizational-level phenomenon (i.e., creativity by an organization). Second, approaches to consciously build organizational creativity to increase the capacity of an organization to demonstrate novelty in its knowledgeable actions are rare. The current creativity techniques are mainly based on individual-creativity views, and they mainly focus on the occasional problem-solving cases among a limited number of individuals, whereas, the development of collective creativity and creativity by the organization lacks approaches. Third, in terms of organizational creativity as a collective phenomenon, the engagement, contributions, and participation of organizational members into activities of common meaning creation are more important than the individualcreativity skills. Therefore, the development approaches to foster creativity as social, emerging, embodied, and collective creativity are needed to complement the current creativity techniques. To address these gaps, the study takes a multiparadigm perspective to face the following three objectives. The first objective of this study is to clarify and extend the conceptualization of organizational creativity. The second is to study the development of organizational creativity. The third is to explore how an improvisational theater based approach fosters organizational creativity. The study consists of two parts comprising the introductory part (part I) and six publications (part II). Each publication addresses the research questions of the thesis through detailed subquestions. The study makes three main contributions to the research of organizational creativity. First, it contributes toward the conceptualization of organizational creativity by extending the current view of organizational creativity. This study views organizational creativity as a multilevel construct constituting both of individual and collective (group and organizational) creativity. In contrast to current views of organizational creativity, this study bases on organizational (collective) knowledge that is based on and demonstrated through the knowledgeable actions of an organization as a whole. The study defines organizational creativity as an overall ability of an organization to demonstrate novelty in its knowledgeable actions (through what it does and how it does what it does).Second, this study contributes toward the development of organizational creativity as multi-level phenomena, introducing developmental approaches that face two or more of these levels simultaneously. More specifically, the study presents the cross-level approaches to building organizational creativity, by using an approach based in improvisational theater and considering assessment of organizational renewal capability. Third, the study contributes on development of organizational creativity using an improvisational theater based approach as twofold meaning. First, it fosters individual and collective creativity simultaneously and builds space for creativity to occur. Second, it models collective and distributed creativity processes, thereby, contributing to the conceptualization of organizational creativity.

SUMMARY Organizational creativity – hegemonic and alternative discourses Over the course of recent developments in the societal and business environment, the concept of creativity has been brought into new arenas. The rise of ‘creative industries’ and the idea of creativity as a form of capital have attracted the interests of business and management professionals – as well as academics. As the notion of creativity has been adopted in the organization studies literature, the concept of organizational creativity has been introduced to refer to creativity that takes place in an organizational context. This doctoral thesis focuses on organizational creativity, and its purpose is to explore and problematize the hegemonic organizational creativity discourse and to provide alternative viewpoints for theorizing about creativity in organizations. Taking a discourse theory approach, this thesis, first, provides an outline of the currently predominant, i.e. hegemonic, discourse on organizational creativity, which is explored regarding themes, perspectives, methods and paradigms. Second, this thesis consists of five studies that act as illustrations of certain alternative viewpoints. Through these exemplary studies, this thesis sheds light on the limitations and taken-for-granted aspects of the hegemonic discourse and discusses what these alternative viewpoints could offer for the understanding of and theorizing for organizational creativity. This study leans on an assumption that the development of organizational creativity knowledge and the related discourse is not inevitable or progressive but rather contingent. The organizational creativity discourse has developed in a certain direction, meaning that some themes, perspectives, and methods, as well as assumptions, values, and objectives, have gained a hegemonic position over others, and are therefore often taken for granted and considered valid and relevant. The hegemonization of certain aspects, however, contributes to the marginalization of others. The thesis concludes that the hegemonic discourse on organizational creativity is based on an extensive coverage of certain themes and perspectives, such as those focusing on individual cognitive processes, motivation, or organizational climate and their relation to creativity, to name a few. The limited focus on some themes and the confinement to certain prevalent perspectives, however, results in the marginalization of other themes and perspectives. The negative, often unintended, consequences, implications, and side effects of creativity, the factors that might hinder or prevent creativity, and a deeper inquiry into the ontology and epistemology of creativity have attracted relatively marginal interest. The material embeddedness of organizational creativity, in other words, the physical organizational environment as well as the human body and its non-cognitive resources, has largely been overlooked in the hegemonic discourse, although thereare studies in this area that give reason to believe that they might prove relevant for the understanding of creativity. The hegemonic discourse is based on an individual-centered understanding of creativity which overattributes creativity to an individual and his/her cognitive capabilities, while simultaneously neglecting how, for instance, the physical environment, artifacts, social dynamics and interactions condition organizational creativity. Due to historical reasons, quantitative as well as qualitative yet functionally- oriented studies have predominated the organizational creativity discourse, although studies falling into the interpretationist paradigm have gradually become more popular. The two radical paradigms, as well as methodological and analytical approaches typical of radical research, can be considered to hold a marginal position in the field of organizational creativity. The hegemonic organizational creativity discourse has provided extensive findings related to many aspects of organizational creativity, although the con- ceptualizations and understandings of organizational creativity in the hegemonic discourse are also in many respects limited and one-sided. The hegemonic discourse is based on an assumption that creativity is desirable, good, necessary, or even obligatory, and should be encouraged and nourished. The conceptualiza- tions of creativity favor the kind of creativity which is useful, valuable and can be harnessed for productivity. The current conceptualization is limited to the type of creativity that is acceptable and fits the managerial ideology, and washes out any risky, seemingly useless, or negative aspects of creativity. It also limits the possible meanings and representations that ‘creativity’ has in the respective discourse, excluding many meanings of creativity encountered in other discourses. The excessive focus on creativity that is good, positive, productive and fits the managerial agenda while ignoring other forms and aspects of creativity, however, contributes to the dilution of the notion. Practices aimed at encouraging the kind of creativity may actually entail a risk of fostering moderate alterations rather than more radical novelty, as well as management and organizational practices which limit creative endeavors, rather than increase their likelihood. The thesis concludes that although not often given the space and attention they deserve, there are alternative conceptualizations and understandings of organizational creativity which embrace a broader notion of creativity. The inability to accommodate the ‘other’ understandings and viewpoints within the organizational creativity discourse runs a risk of misrepresenting the complex and many-sided phenomenon of creativity in organizational context. Asiakasomisteiset osuuskunnat ovat menestyneet Suomessa erittäin hyvin. Niiden ymmärtäminen yritysmuotona on kuitenkin toistaiseksi perustunut lähinnä muilla kuin liiketaloustieteen oppialoilla tehdyille tutkimuksille. Johtaminen ja organisaatiot -oppialalla asiakasomisteista osuustoimintaa on tutkittu erittäin vähän. Tämä väitöskirja pyrkii vastaamaan osuustoiminnan liiketaloustieteellisen tutkimuksen kehittämisen haasteeseen keskittymällä omistajuuteen, yritystoiminnan erityispiirteiden ytimeen. Tutkimus osallistuu osuustoiminnallisesta omistajuudesta Suomessa käytävään akateemiseen keskusteluun esittelemällä viitekehyksen asiakasomisteisen osuuskunnan omistajuuden tulkitsemiseen. Tutkimuksessa pyritään ymmärtämään asiakasomistajuuden ulottuvuuksia, kuten ne rakentuvat osuustoiminnan asiantuntijoiden puheenvuoroissa. Asiakasomistajuutta ei siis analysoida "rivijäsenten" näkökulmasta, vaan tulkinta rajoittuu OP-ryhmän osuuspankkien ja S-ryhmän osuuskauppojen johtajien ja hallintohenkilöiden sekä tutkijoidentutkimusaineistossa esittämiin selontekoihin. Aineisto koostuu kaikkiaan kolmestakymmenestäviidestä haastattelusta sekä dokumenttiaineistosta. Tulkittavia tekstejä lähestytään siten, että niiden ajatellaan ylläpitävän ja aktiivisesti rakentavan asiakasomisteisten osuuskuntien omistajuutta. Väitöskirjassa rakentuva asiakasomistajuuden malli pitää sisällään sekä taloudellisrationaalisen että psykologisen omistajuuden niin yksittäisen asiakasomistajan kuin jäsenyhteisön näkökulmasta. Työn teoreettisena kontribuutiona on erityisesti asiakasomisteisen osuuskunnan omistajuuden psykologisen ulottuvuuden määrittely sekä sen liittäminen yhteisötasolla paikallisuuteen ja alueellisuuteen. Edellä mainittujen omistajuuden ulottuvuuksien ollessa kiinteästi sidoksissa asiakasomisteisten osuuskuntien rakenteeseen ja toimintatapaan, ne tarjoavat kehityspohjan kyseisten yritysten johtamista ja omistajaohjausta käsitteleville teorioille.

Diplomityö tehtiin Partek Oyj Abp:lle antamaan IT-järjestelmistä vastuussa oleville ja niihin tukeutuville johtohenkilöille yleisnäkemys IT-sovellusintegroinnista sekä luomaan ohjeet integrointi projekteihin. Diplomityön alkuosassa esitellään liiketoiminnan prosessien pulmakohtia ja sovellusintegrointien liiketoiminnalle tuomia etuja yleisellä tasolla perustuen kirjallisuuteen. Yleisen tason etuja saadaan mm. nopeampien prosessien, paremman tiedon saatavuuden ja ihmisille tulevien uusien toimintatapojen kautta tulevista eduista. Työn seuraavassa osiossa esitellään mitä sovellusintegraatio tarkoittaa käytännössä, mitä erilaisia vaihtoehtoja integroinneille on ja mitä etuja ja haittoja erilaisista integrointitavoista on. Integrointitavoista viesti-pohjainen integrointitapa on noussut suosituimmaksi sen yksinkertaisuuden, luotettavuuden ja helpon liitettävyyden takia. Integrointisovelluksilla on mahdollista siirtää, muokata, prosessoida ja varastoida viestejä. Näiden ominaisuuksien avulla on mahdollista luoda reaaliaikaisia yhteistyöverkostoja. Tämä osio perustuu kirjallisuuteen , artikkeleihin ja haastatteluihin. Kolmas osio keskittyy integrointi projektin ominaispiirteisiin luoden toimintakartan integrointiprojektin kululle. Osiossa esitellään huomioitavat tekniset asiat, kustannukset ja edut sekä mallipohjia integroinnin dokumentointiin. Osio perustuu omiin kokemuksiin, haastatteluihin sekä kirjallisuuteen. Neljännessä osiossa esitellään Partekissa tehty integrointiprojekti. Integrointityö tehtiin ostajille tarkoitetun toimittajarekisterin (PPM) ja ERP-järjestelmän (Baan) välillä. Integrointiin käytettiin yhtä suosituinta integrointityökalua nimeltään IBM WebSphere MQ.Osio perustuu projektin dokumentointiin, omiin kokemuksiin ja kirjallisuuteen. Diplomityön päättää yhteenveto. Kolme pääetua voidaan saavuttaa integroinneilla ja toimintakartalla; tiedon luotettavuus paranee, toimintakartalla saadaan integroinneille malli ja luodaan riippumattomuutta tiettyihin avain henkilöihin tarkalla dokumentoinnilla ja toimintatapojen standardoinnilla.

Työn tavoitteena oli yritysjohdon käyttämän sisäisen raportin kehittäminen vastaamaan paremmin johdon tarpeita. Teoriaosuuden tarkoituksena oli selvittää kirjallisuuden avulla sisäisen raportin käyttöä johdon työkaluna, hyvän raportin vaatimuksia ja yleisiä raportoinnin periaatteita. Empiirinen osuus toteutettiin haastatteluiden avulla ja analysoimalla case-yrityksen sisäisiä raportteja. Empiirisen osan tavoitteena oli selvittää aiemman raportin ongelmat, löytää ratkaisut näihin ongelmiin ja laatia uusi raportointimalli, joka palvelee paremmin raportin käyttäjiä.Teoriaosuuden perusteella voidaan päätellä, että raportoinnin kehittämiseen vaikuttaa eniten raportin käyttötarkoitus ja henkilöt, joiden työväline raportti tulee olemaan. Raportin kehittäminen on jatkuva prosessi, sillä raportin tulee mukautua liiketoiminta- ja organisaatiomuutoksiin.Työn empiirisessä osassa esitetty uusi raportointimalli palvelee case-yritystä monella eri tasolla. Se tukee johdon työskentelyä ja tarjoaa yritystasolla välineen kustannusten parempaan hallintaan ja seurantaan.

Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää yksilön ja organisaation tietämystä sekä niiden kasvattamista. Tarkoituksena oli löytää yksilön ja organisaation tietämyksen yhdistäviä tekijöitä. Tutkimusmetodologia oli empiirinen deskriptiivinen tutkimus ja tutkimusmenetelmä oli kvalitatiivinen perustuen kymmeneen teemahaastatteluun. Tutkimuksen tuloksena oli, että tietotyöntekijät kasvattavat omaa ja organisaation tietämystä samankaltaisin keinoin, eikä niiden välillä mielletty olevan suurtakaan eroa. Työssä kokeminen yrityksen ja erehdyksen kautta kerrottiin tärkeimmäksi menetelmäksi kasvattaa omaa tietämystä. Kirjoja arvostettiin erityisen paljon tietämyksen kasvattamisessa ja se ohitti tiedon lähteenä jopa internetin. Työkollegat olivat kolmas tärkeä tietämyksen lähde. Kaksi tärkeintä edellytystä tietämyksen kasvattamisessa olivat opiskelun aikana saatu tietopohja sekä oma kiinnostus ja motivaatio. Organisaation tietämyksen kasvattamisessa tärkeimmäksi tekijäksi nousivat dokumentointi, virheistä oppiminen, sisäinen kommunikointi, tietojärjestelmät ja avoin organisaatiokulttuuri. Tutkimuksen perusteella syntyi kolmivaiheinen malli tietämyksen kasvattamisen kehästä, jonka elementit ovat edellytykset, lähteet ja menetelmät. Kehän keskellä on työssä oppiminen, joka on tärkein tekijä tietämyksen kasvattamisessa. Case-yrityksen toiminta oppivana organisaationa osoitti, että yrityksessä tulisi panostaa erityisesti oppimisen tukemiseen ja johtamiseen. Myös tiedon dokumentointi ja muuttaminen avoimeen muotoon sekä yrityksen prosessit tarvitsevat selkiyttämistä. Organisaation avoimuus ja ilmapiiri osoittautuivat hyviksi, mikä auttaa osaltaan tietämyksen kasvattamista.

Innovation is the word of this decade. According to innovation definitions, without positive sales impact and meaningful market share the company’s product or service has not been an innovation. Research problem of this master thesis is to find out what is the innovation process of complex new consumer products and services in new innovation paradigm. The objective is to get answers to two research questions: 1) What are the critical success factors what company should do when it is implementing the paradigm change in mass markets consumer business with complex products and services? 2) What is the process or framework one firm could follow? The research problem is looked from one company’s innovation creation process, networking and organization change management challenges point of views. Special focus is to look the research problem from an existing company perspective which is entering new business area. Innovation process management framework of complex new consumer products and services in new innovation paradigm has been created with support of several existing innovation theories. The new process framework includes the critical innovation process elements companies should take into consideration in their daily activities when they are in their new business innovation implementing process. Case company location based business implementation activities are studied via the new innovation process framework. This case study showed how important it is to manage the process, look how the target market and the competition in it is developing during company’s own innovation process, make decisions at right time and from beginning plan and implement the organization change management as one activity in the innovation process. In the end this master thesis showed that all companies need to create their own innovation process master plan with milestones and activities. One plan does not fit all, but all companies can start their planning from the new innovation process what was introduced in this master thesis.

Trust in inter-organizational collaborative relationships has attracted substantial research interest among academics and practitioners. Previous studies have concentrated on the benefits of trust to business outcomes and economic performance, as it is considered to be a source of competitive advantage. Despite this increased level of interest, there is no consensus, much less overall agreement, about how it should be conceptualized or about the number of dimensions it incorporates. On the inter-organizational level there is an obvious challenge in defining both the trusting party and the objects of trust. Thus, the notion of trust as an under-theorized and poorly understood phenomenon still holds. Hence, the motivation of this study was fuelled by the need to increase our knowledge and understanding of the role and nature of trust in inter-organizational collaborative relationships. It is posited that there is a call for more understanding about its antecedents and consequences, as well as about the very concept in inter-organizational collaborative relationships. The study is divided into two parts. The first part gives a general overview, and the second part comprises four research publications. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodology is utilized. A multi-method research design was used because it provides different levels of data and different perspectives on the phenomenon. The results of this study reveal that trust incorporates three dimensions on both the individual and the organizational level: capability, goodwill, and self-reference. Trust develops from the reputation and behavior of the trusted party. It appears from this study that trust is clearly directed towards both individual boundary spanners and the counterpart company itself – i.e. not only to one or the other. The trusting party, on the other hand, is always an individual, and not the organization per se. Trust increases collaboration benefits and lowers collaboration drawbacks, thus having a positive effect on relationship performance. The major contribution of this study lies in uncovering the critical points and drawbacks in prior research and thereby in responding to the highlighted challenges. The way in which these challenges were addressed offers contributions to three major issues in the emerging theory of trust in the inter-organizational context: firstly, this study clarifies the trustor-trustee discussion; secondly, it conceptualizes trust as existing on both individual and organizational levels; and thirdly, it provides more information about the antecedents of trust and the ways in which it affects relationship performance.
Resumo:
Työn tavoitteena oli koota Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston tuotantotalouden osaston opetuksen kehittämisen historiatiedot ja henkilöstön mielipide vuosien 2000–2008 aikana tehdystä kehittämistyöstä organisaation jatkokehittämistä ja viestintää varten. Työn aihepiiri käsittelee organisaation kehittämistä (kehittymistä) yksilön ja organisaation oppimisen näkökulmasta. Historiatiedot on kerätty osaston henkilökunnalta ja saaduista dokumenteista. Henkilöstön palautteen kerääminen kehittämistyöstä toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena suorittamalla 32 henkilökohtaista haastattelua. Tutkimuksen keskeisimmäksi tulokseksi on saatu onnistuneen kehittämisen malli, jossa yksilön ja organisaation kehittymiseen vaikuttavat vahvasti yksilötasolla tarve ja konkreettinen päämäärä. Koko organisaatiossa on lisäksi huomioitava muina osina systematiikka, yhteisöllisyys ja tietämyksen (osaamisen) hallinta.
