Työn tarkoituksessa on luoda kokonaisvaltainen kuva Venäjän sähkösektorista ja siellä suoritettavasta reformista. Työ johdattelee lukijan aiheeseen kuvaamalla Venäjän sähkösektorin- ja markkinoiden tilaa ennen reformia. Tässä on tärkeää ymmärtää, kuinka kulutus ja tuotanto kohtasivat. Tämän jälkeen siirrytään selvittämään reformin syitä, suuntia ja päämääriä. Reformin kolme pääkohtaa ovat lainsäädännöllisen viitekehyksen luominen, sähkösektorin uudelleenjärjestely sekä uusien sähkömarkkinoiden kehittäminen ja täytäntöönpano. Uudelleenjärjestely on valtava prosessi, joka koskettaa koko Venäjän sähkömarkkinoita. Tämän prosessin keskeisenä tekijänä tosin on lähes monopoliasemaa nauttiva Unified Energy System of Russia. Tätä prosessia pyritään kuvaamaan alusta asti tähän päivään saakka. Toinen merkittävä prosessi on ollut uuden sähkömarkkinamallin kehittäminen ja tämän käyttöönotto. Työssä kuvataan tämän uuden mallin toimintaa ja rakennetta, ja työn loppupuolella pyritään selvittämään Venäjän sähkösektorin tulevaisuuden suunnitelmia, haasteita ja ennusteita.

The thesis examines System Integration and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) channel in the St. Petersburg drives market. The aim of the study was to increase understanding the relationship between OEM and SI and producers, problems and ongoing trends. The collected data was analyzed in order to find out which features of a power electronic drive product exercise a significant influence for the Russian companies decision. An essential part of this study was interviews as primary information sources, organized with SI and OEM companies which represented the basic SPb industry segments. The wholesalers and end users are left out from the analysis. The collected data was analyzed in order to find out which features of a power electronic drive product exercise a significant influence for the Russian companies decision.

The purpose of this work was to study the effect of aspen and alder on birch cooking and the quality of the pulp produced. Three different birch kraft pulps were studied. As a reference, pure aspen and alder were included. The laboratory trials were done at the UPM Research Centre in Lappeenranta, Finland. The materials used were birch, aspen and alder mill chips that were collected around the area of South-Carelia in Finland. The chips used in the study were pulped using a standard kraft process. The pulps including birch fibres were ECF-bleached at laboratory scale to a target brightness of 85 %. The bleached pulps were beaten at low consistency by a laboratory Voith Sulzer refiner and tested for optical and physical properties. The theoretical part is a study of hardwoods that takes into accounts the differences between birch, aspen and alder. Major sub-areas were fibre and paper-technical properties as well as chemical composition and their influence on the different properties. The pulp properties of birch, aspen and alder found in previous studies were reported. Russian hardwood forest resources were also investigated. The fundamentals of kraft pulping and bleaching were studied at the end of theoretical part. The major effect of replacing birch with aspen and alder was the deterioration (lowering) of tensile and tear strengths. In other words, addition of aspen and alder to a birch furnish reduced strength properties. The reinforcement ability of the tested pulps was the following: 100 % birch > 80 % birch, 20 % aspen > 70 % birch, 20 % aspen, 10 % alder. The second thing noted was that blending of birch together with aspen and alder give better smoothness, optical properties and also formation. It can be concluded, that replacement of birch with alder during cooking by more than 10 % can negatively affect on the paper-technical properties of birch pulp. Mixing pure birch and aspen pulps would be more beneficial when producing printing paper made from chemical pulp.

Tutkielma rakentaa puitteet venäläisen toimintaympäristön ymmärtämiselle. Institutionaalisen ympäristön on oltava vahva tukeakseen yritysten corporate governancen mukaista toimintaa. Venäjän tapauksessa instituutiot ovat vielä osin kehittymättömiä ja vahvasti peräisin Neuvostoliiton ajoilta. Niiltä ajoilta on jäänyt myös suuri kulttuurinen perintö, joka vaikuttaa venäläisten toimintaan vielä tänäkin päivänä. Yrityksillä on monia mahdollisuuksia toimia venäläisillä markkinoilla lainmukaisesti, vaikka se onkin välillä hankalaa. Yritykset ovatkin kehittäneet keinoja, joilla regulatiiviset puitteet voidaan kiertää ja oikaista. Tässä niitä avustavat usein myös valtion kontrollit. Valtion on kehitettävä lainsäädäntöä, jotta yritysten olisi helpompi toimia sen mukaan. Lisäksi korruptiota on vähennettävä, jotta yrityksillä ei olisi mahdollisuutta toimia laittomasti ja viranomaisilla olisi mahdollisuus suorittaa työtehtäviään.

Venäjän lainsäädäntö mahdollistaa erilaisten rajoitusten asettamisen liikenteelle kelirikkoajan aikana ja alhaisten painorajoitusten asettaminen on tällöin yleistä. Kelirikon aikaisiin rajoituksiin liittyvä lainsäädäntö on pääosin tarkoituksenmukainen, mutta sitä sovelletaan tavalla, jolla vaikeutetaan huomattavasti yritysten toimintaa ja tarvittavien kuljetusten järjestämistä. Diplomityössä tutkitaan kelirikon vaikutuksia liiketoimintaan erityisesti caseyksikössä, joka on metsäteollisuusyhtiön Venäjällä sijaitseva tuotantoyksikkö. Venäläinen liiketoimintaympäristö eroaa huomattavasti suomalaisesta, ja kelirikon aikana korostuvat etenkin korruption ja henkilökohtaisten suhteiden merkitys. Suuri osa havaituista sallitun painon ylityksistä hoidetaan kelirikon aikana maksamalla epävirallisia maksuja suoraan tarkastajille. Myös virallisia kulkulupia myydään, mutta niiden hankinta on kallista ja aikaa vievää. Työn lähtökohta kiteytyy lainsäädännön, viranomaisten tulkinnan ja todellisen tilanteen välisten ristiriitojen avaamiseen ja selvittämiseen, ja tavoitteena on ollut mahdollisimman objektiivisen kokonaiskuvan luominen tilanteesta. Case-yksikössä on kehitetty vaihtoehtoisia toimintamalleja kelirikkoajan kuljetusten varmistamiseksi. Rautatiekuljetusten määrää on lisätty huomattavasti ja välivarastointiterminaalin rakentamista on suunniteltu. Vaihtoehtoiset toimintamallit aiheuttavat kuitenkin huomattavia lisäkustannuksia. Tutkimuksen tuottamien tietojen avulla case-yhtiössä voidaan jatkossa arvioida todellisia riskejä sekä vaihtoehtoisten toimintamallien tarpeellisuutta ja kustannustehokkuutta aikaisempaa tarkemmin.

Rakennusteollisuus on ollut kasvava teollisuudenala Venäjällä, joka on kasvattanut kysyntää myös ikkunateollisuudessa. Vuoden 2008 syksyllä alkanut maailmanlaajuinen talouskriisi vaikutti merkittävästi myös Venäjän talouteen, jonka seurauksena rakennusala oli Venäjällä vaikeuksissa. Asuntojen kysyntä Venäjällä on kuitenkin lähtenyt kasvuun uudelleen vuoden 2009 loppupuolella ja markkinatilanne on paranemaan päin. Suomalaiset rakennusalan yritykset toimivat pääasiassa Pietarin ja Moskovan alueella, jonka vuoksi Fenestra Oy on suunnitellut ikkunatehtaan perustamista Pietarin lähistölle. Työssä esitellään Venäjän ikkunamarkkinat sekä Fenestra Oy:n lähtökohdat ja suunnitelmat kokoonpanotehtaan perustamiseksi. Ikkunoiden puiset komponentit on tarkoitus valmistaa Suomessa, josta ne kuljetetaan kasattaviksi Venäjällä sijaitsevaan kokoonpanotehtaaseen. Työn tarkoituksena on kuvata Venäjän tehtaan toimintamalli prosessikuvauksien avulla, selvittää tullauskäytäntö Venäjälle vietäessä sekä määrittää toimintamalliin sisältyvät riskit. Teolliseen toimintaan ja varsinkin Venäjälle suuntautuvaan toimintaan liittyy riskejä, joiden toteutumiseen on mahdollista varautua riskienhallinnan avulla. Riskien tunnistamiseksi on käytetty vaarojentunnistusmenetelmää, HAZOP –poikkeamatarkastelumenetelmää. Menetelmässä nimettiin mahdolliset poikkeamat, niiden syyt ja seuraukset. Poikkeamat luokiteltiin eri luokkiin niiden vakavuuden ja todennäköisyyden perusteella. Lisäksi tarkastelussa annettiin ehdotuksia varautumiseen ja toimenpiteiksi poikkeaman estämiseksi tai riskien pienentämiseksi.

The nutrient load to the Gulf of Finland has started to increase as a result of the strong economic recovery in agriculture and livestock farming in the Leningrad region. Also sludge produced from municipal wastewater treatment plant of the Leningrad region causes the great impact on the environment, but still the main options for its treatment is disposal on the sludge beds or Landfills. The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of possible joint treatment methods of manure form livestock and poultry enterprises and sewage sludge produced from municipal wastewater treatment plants in the Leningrad region. The study is based on published data. The most attention was put on the anaerobic digestion and incineration methods. The manure and sewage sludge generation for the whole Leningrad region and energy potential produced from their treatment were estimated. The calculations showed that total amount of sewage sludge generation is 1 348 000 t/a calculated on wet matter and manure generation is 3 445 000 t/a calculated on wet matter. The potential heat release from anaerobic digestion process and incineration process is 4 880 000 GJ/a and 5 950 000 GJ/a, respectively. Furthermore, the work gives the overview of the general Russian and Finnish legislation concerning manure and sewage sludge treatment. In the Gatchina district it was chosen the WWTP and livestock and poultry enterprises for evaluation of the centralized treatment plant implementation based on anaerobic digestion and incineration methods. The electricity and heat power of plant based on biogas combustion process is 4.3 MW and 7.8 MW, respectively. The electricity and heat power of plant based on manure and sewage sludge incineration process is 3.0 MW and 6.1 MW, respectively.

The problem of choosing the heating system is always relevant when building new houses. Type of energy source (solid fuel, liquid fuel, gas, electricity, alternative sources) is the main issue in choosing the heating system. The work gives a comprehensive overview of heating methods, determines their advantages and disadvantages taking into account economical and ecological situations in Finland and Russia. Quantitative contribution of single Finnish and Russian detached houses in the overall level of carbon dioxide emissions is estimated when using each method. Comparison of Russian and Finnish energy markets and their impact on electricity pricing is made in the work. The influence of air pollution on environmental offsets according to Russian and Finnish legislative and normative acts is determined.

The purpose of this study was to define the key challenges for Finnish companies in doing business in Russia. The study consists of a theoretical and an empirical part and is conducted as a quantitative study. The theoretical framework was build around capital structure, cost of capital and emerging market theories. The findings suggest that the firms in the sample seek growth mainly from emerging markets. These research results also indicate that challenges are visible in emerging market environment. Challenges that companies are facing in Russian market are mainly connected with legislation, communication and language problems. In addition, companies’ profitability has changed during the financial crisis, which has been the main reason for the negative changes in companies’ profitability. Even though the financial crisis has had a strong effect on the worldwide economy, the firms in the sample are not postponing their investments to Russia, because of lack of new financing or unfavorable credit terms.

Reformation of electricity markets has initiated creation of ancillary services markets all over the world. The Russian electricity market reform is in transition period, that is why the problem of ancillary services market has just arisen. Since the model of market rules was created, ancillary services market became a topical question for generating companies. This master’s thesis is focused on the describing the possible ancillary services around the world and in Russia specifically. Moreover, the physical interpretation of ancillary services is defined. In addition, possibility of generation company to participate in the ancillary services market was considered. Calculations were made for primary frequency regulation service, where necessary level of price bids and payback period were evaluated.

Environmental problems and issues have received more and more attention during the last decades. Reasons for this are different increased external costs such as congestion, CO2 emission, noise and accident costs. Transportation sector is the only sector with increasing external costs. The EU will increase its attention in decreasing the external costs of transport. Aim of this research was to find out if a dry port solution could decrease costs of transport, especially external costs. Dry port concept is an intermodal transport system, where inland transport between port and dry port is performed by rail transport instead of traditional road transport. In addition, dry ports offer similar services as ports. Research is conducted by performing a literature review about dry port concept and costs of transport, especially external costs of transport. Financial and environmental impacts of the dry port concept are studied by comparing costs of road and rail transport by cost accounting and with a simulation model. Location of dry port is researched with gravitational models. Results of the literature review are that rail transport is environmentally friendlier mode of transport than road transport. Cost model and simulation model show that if only costs of freight movement are considered, rail transport is more inexpensive transport mode than road transport in terms of internal and external costs. Because of that dry port concept could decrease costs of transport, especially external costs. Results of gravitational models are that city of Kouvola is in a good position to be a dry port. Russian transit traffic through Finland improves location of Kouvola to be a dry port.

The aim of the thesis is to analyze traffic flows and its development from North European companies` point of view to China and Russia using data from logistics questionnaire. Selected North European companies are large Finnish and Swedish companies. The questionnaire was sent via email to the target group. The study is based on the answers got from respondent companies from years 2006, 2009 and 2010. In the thesis Finnish Talouselämä newspaper and Swedish Affärsdata are used as a database to find the target companies for the survey. Respondents were most often logistics managers in companies. In the beginning of the thesis concepts of transportation logistics is presented, including container types, trade terms, axel loads in roads and in railways. Also there is information about warehousing types and terminals. After that, general information of Chinese and Russian transportation logistics is presented. Chinese and Russian issues are discussed in two sections. In both of them it is analyzed economic development, freight transport and trade balance. Some practical examples of factory inaugurations in China and Russia are presented that Finnish and Swedish companies have completed. In freight transport section different transportation modes, logistics outsourcing and problems of transportation logistics is discussed. The results of the thesis show that transportation flows between Europe and China is changing. Freight traffic from China to European countries will strengthen even more from the current base. When it comes to Russia and Europe, traffic flows seem to be changing from eastbound traffic to westbound traffic. It means that in the future it is expected more freight traffic from Russia to Europe. Some probable reasons for that are recent factory establishments in Russia and company interviews support also this observation. Effects of the economic recession are mainly seen in the lower transportation amounts in 2009.

The aim of the study is to find out “What are the challenges to overcome for the successful nanotechnology commercialization in Russia?” Working closely with the case country was definitely an advantage when it comes to the understanding of the research subject. The thesis is divided to two parts: first part examines the concept of technology commercialization and identifies unique aspects of the process in context of nanotechnology. Second part is dedicated to an empirical research, investigating current status of nanotechnology commercialization in Russia. For the purpose of this study, Russian and international scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, industry and government representatives were interviewed systematically during 2007 – 2009. Based on the research done it can be concluded that immense public funding provides necessary support for the development of Russian nanotechnology industry. However, investments alone do not address important structural shortcomings of a national innovation system, which in turn slow down the progress. Taking into consideration gap between science and business and challenging IPR legislation, expected significant economic impact in Russia may be overestimated. Nevertheless it should be noted that development of nanotechnology is advancing rapidly and therefore, the state of commercialization is changing accordingly, even while this lines are written.

In the Russian Wholesale Market, electricity and capacity are traded separately. Capacity is a special good, the sale of which obliges suppliers to keep their generating equipment ready to produce the quantity of electricity indicated by the System Operator. The purpose of the formation of capacity trading was the maintenance of reliable and uninterrupted delivery of electricity in the wholesale market. The price of capacity reflects constant investments in construction, modernization and maintenance of power plants. So, the capacity sale creates favorable conditions to attract investments in the energy sector because it guarantees the investor that his investments will be returned.
