imaxin|software: PLN aplicada a la mejora de la comunicación multilingüe de empresas e instituciones

imaxin|software es una empresa creada en 1997 por cuatro titulados en ingeniería informática cuyo objetivo ha sido el de desarrollar videojuegos multimedia educativos y procesamiento del lenguaje natural multilingüe. 17 años más tarde, hemos desarrollado recursos, herramientas y aplicaciones multilingües de referencia para diferentes lenguas: Portugués (Galicia, Portugal, Brasil, etc.), Español (España, Argentina, México, etc.), Inglés, Catalán y Francés. En este artículo haremos una descripción de aquellos principales hitos en relación a la incorporación de estas tecnologías PLN al sector industrial e institucional.

International conference paper presentations: A multimodal analysis to determine effectiveness

International conference presentations represent one of the biggest challenges for academics using English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). This paper aims to initiate exploration into the multimodal academic discourse of oral presentations, including the verbal, written, non-verbal material (NVM) and body language modes. It offers a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) and multimodal framework of presentations to enhance mixed-disciplinary ELF academics' awareness of what needs to be taken into account to communicate effectively at conferences. The model is also used to establish evaluation criteria for the presenters' talks and to carry out a multimodal discourse analysis of four well-rated 20-min talks, two from the technical sciences and two from the social sciences in a workshop scenario. The findings from the analysis and interviews indicate that: (a) a greater awareness of the mode affordances and their combinations can lead to improved performances; (b) higher reliance on the visual modes can compensate for verbal deficiencies; and (c) effective speakers tend to use a variety of modes that often overlap but work together to convey specific meanings. However, firm conclusions cannot be drawn on the basis of workshop presentations, and further studies on the multimodal analysis of ‘real conferences’ within specific disciplines are encouraged.

English as the medium of instruction: a response to internationalization

The status of English as a lingua franca has led European universities to implement the use of this language as a medium of instruction (EMI). This study presents an analysis of the status quo of EMI at the University of Alicante. It takes into account the institution`s language policy and the programs which offer subjects in English, as well as the challenges, needs and benefits of the professors and students. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected by means of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings of this needs analysis will help us to create an action plan that will include teacher and student training schemes to foster internationalization.

Aspectos didácticos en la formación de traductores para el ámbito económico e institucional

Este trabajo tiene que ver con uno de los objetivos perseguidos, en el marco del Proyecto Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria del Instituto de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Alicante, por la red 2986 "Planificación docente y uso de COMENEGO (Corpus Multilingüe de Economía y Negocios) en la enseñanza de la traducción económica e institucional", relacionado, en concreto, con las metodologías docentes en traducción económica. Se presenta una síntesis de una serie de comunicaciones que se pronunciaron en el Congreso Internacional de Traducción Económica, Comercial, Financiera e Institucional, celebrado en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Alicante a finales de mayo de 2014.

On terminological figurativeness: From theory to practice

Terminologists’ interest in studying the role of metaphor and metaphorical terms in specialized communication has proliferated since the first papers addressing this issue appeared in the 1990s. However, we believe that some facets of terminological meaning still remain overlooked or merit further analysis. This paper attempts to contribute to the study of one of these facets: the figurative meaning of some compound terms used in the domain of luxury marketing and business. In order to present a systematized view of this phenomenon we will adopt some theoretical tools from the Conventional Figurative Language Theory, in order to confirm the validity of some of its postulates for compound term analysis. Next, a contrastive approach between English, Spanish and Russian compound terms will put the theoretical ideas into practice with the aim of illustrating their applied and metalinguistic potential. Some basic conclusions will be offered at the end of the paper.

Asignaturas de Traducción Jurídica del grado en Traducción e Interpretación

Investigación de los métodos y contenidos de las asignaturas de traducción jurídica del Grado de Traducción en Interpretación de las combinaciones español y alemán/francés/inglés y coordinación entre ellas para buscar sinergias, detectar posibles incongruencias y mejorar la calidad docente. Esta red ha coordinado a los profesores que imparten dichas asignaturas del área temática de traducción jurídica. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea se han celebrarán reuniones presenciales y telemáticas en las que se ha puesto en común la información necesaria para saber qué métodos y estrategias se emplean en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje y cuáles son los contenidos utilizados en estas asignaturas, realizándose un ejercicio de análisis y comparación. Esto ha servido para determinar qué métodos y estrategias de determinadas asignaturas, una vez demostrada su utilidad pedagógica y académica, pueden utilizarse en otras con el objetivo de mejorar y ampliar los métodos didácticos y los materiales empleados. Además, se pretende dar continuidad a la red para evaluar dichas innovaciones.

False Anglicisms in Legal and Business English as a Lingua Franca (ELF): A Process of Back-borrowing

False Anglicisms are words which technically are not part of the English language, but "seem" English, due to their shape or resemblance to English words. These are usually the result of new creations/coinages in other languages and/or semantic shifts. Due to the use of English as a Lingua Franca, it is becoming quite common to come across these words in English with the "re-imported" shape and meaning they bring from other languages.

Going Beyond the obvious in English for Legal Purposes

This paper deals with some of the problems and implications of Legal English being used as a lingua franca, especially when teaching legal English in courses for judges in various European contexts.

All Is not English that Glitters: False Anglicisms in the Spanish Language of Sports

Over the past decades, many studies have dealt with Anglicisms in Spanish, not only in science and technology, but also in other areas such as business, fashion and even sports. However, in spite of the large number of works on Spanish Anglicisms in sports, these have often disregarded the distinction between Anglicisms and false Anglicisms. Given their importance as evidence of the particular relationships between languages, this article focuses on the use of false Anglicisms in the Spanish language of sports, which has not only adopted English words giving them new meanings and usage, but has also either imported items with an English appearance from other languages or created its own forms based on English patterns. Although these false Anglicisms, which have proven extremely popular in various European languages (not only Spanish), have frequently been used and disseminated, as some examples will prove, little attention has been paid to their differences with the English term or their non-English origin.

Elaboración de materiales de autoevaluación en el aprendizaje del rumano en el segundo ciclo (nivel intermedio-avanzado)

Nuestra red se propone desarrollar materiales específicos del aprendizaje autónomo dedicando especial atención a la autoevaluación. Los materiales elaborados parten de los contenidos contemplados en las guías docentes, pero incluyen también los contenidos planteados en los exámenes de rumano como lengua extranjera. Dichos exámenes, organizados por la UA junto con el Instituto de la Lengua Rumana, facilitan la movilidad de nuestros alumnos que necesitan tener un nivel intermedio alto, reconocido oficialmente, para optar a becas de formación (post)universitarias en Rumanía. El objetivo del proyecto es dotar al alumnado de materiales de autoevaluación válidos tanto en la dinámica curricular, como en las evaluaciones externas. Para conseguir nuestro objetivo, hemos optado por el formato de evaluación en entornos digitales.

La Vita Christi de Isabel de Villena y La vida de la sacratíssima verge Maria de Miquel Peres son dos obras devocionales surgidas en la Valencia de finales del siglo XV, y caracterizadas ambas por su temática mariana. Sin embargo, nunca se han analizado conjuntamente para ver posibles dependencias o divergencias. Este trabajo expondrá por primera vez cómo, pese a la proximidad temática, cada autor ofrece un texto diferente para abordar el protagonismo de la Virgen en los hechos evangélicos.
