Bit-level systolic-array structures for computing sums of products are studied in detail. It is shown that these can be subdivided into two classes and that within each class architectures can be described in terms of a set of constraint equations. It is further demonstrated that high-performance system-level functions with attractive VLSI properties can be constructed by matching data-flow geometries in bit-level and word-level architectures.

A systolic array is an array of individual processing cells each of which has some local memory and is connected only to its nearest neighbours in the form of a regular lattice. On each cycle of a simple clock every cell receives data from its neighbouring cells and performs a specific processing operation on it. The resulting data is stored within the cell and passed on to neighbouring cells on the next clock cycle. This paper gives an overview of work to date and illustrates the application of bit-level systolic arrays by means of two examples: (1) a pipelined bit-slice circuit for computing matrix x vector transforms; and (2) a bit serial structure for multi-bit convolution.

A novel design for multibit convolver circuits is described. The circuits take the form of systolic arrays of simple one-bit processor and memory cells, with the result that they can operate at very high data rates and should be easy to implement using VLSI technology. An efficient method for handling two's complement data within the array is described and the relative advantages of this convolver design compared with more conventional circuits is discussed.

Several novel systolic architectures for implementing densely pipelined bit parallel IIR filter sections are presented. The fundamental problem of latency in the feedback loop is overcome by employing redundant arithmetic in combination with bit-level feedback, allowing a basic first-order section to achieve a wordlength-independent latency of only two clock cycles. This is extended to produce a building block from which higher order sections can be constructed. The architecture is then refined by combining the use of both conventional and redundant arithmetic, resulting in two new structures offering substantial hardware savings over the original design. In contrast to alternative techniques, bit-level pipelinability is achieved with no net cost in hardware. © 1989 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

A novel bit-level systolic array architecture for implementing first-order IIR filter sections is presented. A latency of only two clock cycles is achieved by using a radix-4 redundant number representation, performing the recursive computation most-significant-digit first, and feeding back each digit of the result as soon as it is available.

A novel bit-level systolic array architecture for implementing IIR (infinite-impulse response) filter sections is presented. A first-order section achieves a latency of only two clock cycles by using a radix-2 redundant number representation, performing the recursive computation most significant digit first, and feeding back each digit of the result as soon as it is available. The design is extended to produce a building block from which second- and higher-order sections can be connected.

Optimized circuits for implementing high-performance bit-parallel IIR filters are presented. Circuits constructed mainly from simple carry save adders and based on most-significant-bit (MSB) first arithmetic are described. Two methods resulting in systems which are 100% efficient in that they are capable of sampling data every cycle are presented. In the first approach the basic circuit is modified so that the level of pipelining used is compatible with the small, but fixed, latency associated with the computation in question. This is achieved through insertion of pipeline delays (half latches) on every second row of cells. This produces an area-efficient solution in which the throughput rate is determined by a critical path of 76 gate delays. A second approach combines the MSB first arithmetic methods with the scattered look-ahead methods. Important design issues are addressed, including wordlength truncation, overflow detection, and saturation.

The level of Kluane Lake, the largest lake in Yukon Territory, was lower than at present during most of the Holocene. The lake rose rapidly in the late seventeenth century to a level 12 m above present, drowning forest and stranding driftwood on a conspicuous high-stand beach, remnants of which are preserved at the south end of the lake. Kluane Lake fell back to near its present level by the end of the eighteenth century and has fluctuated within a range of about 3 m over the last 50 yr. The primary control on historic fluctuations in lake level is the discharge of Slims River, the largest source of water to the lake. We use tree ring and radiocarbon ages, stratigraphy and sub-bottom acoustic data to evaluate two explanations for the dramatic changes in the level of Kluane Lake. Our data support the hypothesis of Hugh Bostock, who suggested in 1969 that the maximum Little Ice Age advance of Kaskawulsh Glacier deposited large amounts of sediment in the Slims River valley and established the present course of Slims River into Kluane Lake. Bostock argued that these events caused the lake to rise and eventually overflow to the north. The overflowing waters incised the Duke River fan at the north end of Kluane Lake and lowered the lake to its present level. This study highlights the potentially dramatic impacts of climate change on regional hydrology during the Little Ice Age in glacierised mountains. © 2006 University of Washington.

The MaRINET project aims to build a synergy in the European marine renewable energy development infrastructure network, involving a total of 28 partners across the union. Its scope extends from small to large scale testing, in both tank and field. The main activities of the project are to standardize test procedures, to provide centralized free access for European technology developers, and to innovate for improving test infrastructures and techniques.
This paper presents the work carried in this last part, which focuses on research objectives identified to be current challenges for industrial development. They are distributed in 6 topics. On the one hand are issues that concern directly one of the 3 types of energy scoped in the project: wave, tidal, and offshore wind energy. Two examples are the real time estimation of incident waves, and the measurement of turbulence in tidal flows. On the other hand, collaborative effort is drawn on aspects that are common to those technologies: electrical components, environmental monitoring, and dedicated moorings.

Colistin resistance is rare in Acinetobacter baumannii, and little is known about its mechanism. We investigated the role of PmrCAB in this trait, using (i) resistant and susceptible clinical strains, (ii) laboratory-selected mutants of the type strain ATCC 19606 and of the clinical isolate ABRIM, and (iii) a susceptible/resistant pair of isogenic clinical isolates, Ab15/133 and Ab15/132, isolated from the same patient. pmrAB sequences in all the colistin-susceptible isolates were identical to reference sequences, whereas resistant clinical isolates harbored one or two amino acid replacements variously located in PmrB. Single substitutions in PmrB were also found in resistant mutants of strains ATCC 19606 and ABRIM and in the resistant clinical isolate Ab15/132. No mutations in PmrA or PmrC were found. Reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR identified increased expression of pmrA (4- to 13-fold), pmrB (2- to 7-fold), and pmrC (1- to 3-fold) in resistant versus susceptible organisms. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry showed the addition of phosphoethanolamine to the hepta-acylated form of lipid A in the resistant variants and in strain ATCC 19606 grown under low-Mg induction conditions. pmrB gene knockout mutants of the colistin-resistant ATCC 19606 derivative showed >100-fold increased susceptibility to colistin and 5-fold decreased expression of pmrC; they also lacked the addition of phosphoethanolamine to lipid A. We conclude that the development of a moderate level of colistin resistance in A. baumannii requires distinct genetic events, including (i) at least one point mutation in pmrB, (ii) upregulation of pmrAB, and (iii) expression of pmrC, which lead to addition of phosphoethanolamine to lipid A. The authors have much experience in developing mathematics skills of first-year engineering students and attempting to ensure a smooth transition from secondary school to university. Concerns exist due to there being flexibility in the choice of modules needed to obtain a secondary level (A-level) mathematics qualification. This qualification is based on some core (pure maths) modules and a selection from mechanics and statistics modules. A survey of aerospace and mechanical engineering students in Queen’s University Belfast revealed that a combination of both mechanics and statistics (the basic module in both) was by far the most popular choice and therefore only about one quarter of this cohort had studied mechanics beyond the basic module within school maths. Those students who studied the extra mechanics and who achieved top grades at school subsequently did better in two core, first-year engineering courses. However, students with a lower grade from school did not seem to gain any significant advantage in the first-year engineering courses despite having the extra mechanics background. This investigation ties in with ongoing and wider concerns with secondary level mathematics provision in the UK.

We present ab initio quantum chemistry calculations for elastic scattering and the radiative charge transfer reaction process and collision rates for trapped ytterbium ions immersed in a quantum degenerate rubidium vapor.
The collision of the ion (or ions) with the quasiatom is the key mechanism to transfer quantum coherences between the systems. We use first-principles
quantum chemistry codes to obtain the potential surfaces and coupling terms for the two-body interaction of Yb^+ with Rb. We find that the low energy collision has an inelastic radiative charge transfer process in agreement with recent experiments.
The charge transfer cross section agrees well with the semiclassical Langevin model at higher energies but is dominated by resonances at submillikelvin temperatures.

Background: Members of the genus Cronobacter are causes of rare but severe illness in neonates and preterm infants following the ingestion of contaminated infant formula. Seven species have been described and two of the species genomes were subsequently published. In this study, we performed comparative genomics on eight strains of Cronobacter, including six that we sequenced (representing six of the seven species) and two previously published, closed genomes.
Results: We identified and characterized the features associated with the core and pan genome of the genus Cronobacter in an attempt to understand the evolution of these bacteria and the genetic content of each species. We identified 84 genomic regions that are present in two or more Cronobacter genomes, along with 45 unique genomic regions. Many potentially horizontally transferred genes, such as lysogenic prophages, were also identified. Most notable among these were several type six secretion system gene clusters, transposons that carried tellurium, copper and/or silver resistance genes, and a novel integrative conjugative element.
Conclusions: Cronobacter have diverged into two clusters, one consisting of C. dublinensis and C. muytjensii (Cdub-Cmuy) and the other comprised of C. sakazakii, C. malonaticus, C. universalis, and C. turicensis, (Csak-Cmal-Cuni-Ctur) from the most recent common ancestral species. While several genetic determinants for plant-association and human virulence could be found in the core genome of Cronobacter, the four Cdub-Cmuy clade genomes contained several accessory genomic regions important for survival in a plant-associated environmental niche, while the Csak-Cmal-Cuni-Ctur clade genomes harbored numerous virulence-related genetic traits.

The activities of different types of PtRu catalysts for methanol oxidation are compared. Materials used were: UHV-cleaned PtRu alloys, UHV-evaporated Ru onto Pt(111) as well as adsorbed Ru on Pt(111) prepared with and without additional reduction by hydrogen. Differences in the catalytic activity are observed to depend on the preparation procedure of the catalysts. The dependence of the respective catalytic activities upon the surface composition is reported. UHV-STM data for Pt(111)/Ru show the formation of two- and three-dimensional structures depending on surface coverage. A molecular insight on the electrochemical reaction is given via in situ infrared spectroscopy. Analysis of the data indicates that the most probable rate-determining step is the reaction of adsorbed CO with Ru oxide.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present an artificial neural network (ANN) model that predicts earthmoving trucks condition level using simple predictors; the model’s performance is compared to the respective predictive accuracy of the statistical method of discriminant analysis (DA).
Design/methodology/approach: An ANN-based predictive model is developed. The condition level predictors selected are the capacity, age, kilometers travelled and maintenance level. The relevant data set was provided by two Greek construction companies and includes the characteristics of 126 earthmoving trucks.
Findings: Data processing identifies a particularly strong connection of kilometers travelled and maintenance level with the earthmoving trucks condition level. Moreover, the validation process reveals that the predictive efficiency of the proposed ANN model is very high. Similar findings emerge from the application of DA to the same data set using the same predictors.
Originality/value: Earthmoving trucks’ sound condition level prediction reduces downtime and its adverse impact on earthmoving duration and cost, while also enhancing the maintenance and replacement policies effectiveness. This research proves that a sound condition level prediction for earthmoving trucks is achievable through the utilization of easy to collect data and provides a comparative evaluation of the results of two widely applied predictive methods.
