This thesis was made for a large forest industry company’s business segment. The purpose of the study was to improve the performance of the order-to-delivery process of the business segment. The study proceeded in three phases. The first phase was to define customer expectations in the market. The second phase was to analyse the performance and the operations of the order-to-delivery process, and to define any challenges or problems in serving the customers. The third and final phase was improving the performance of the order-to-delivery process, within the scope defined by the first two phases. The analysis showed that the delivery reliability is an essential but a challenging issue in the case company’s markets. On delivery reliability standpoint, the most challenging factors were the detected information flow distortions within the company as well as in the whole supply chain, and the lack of horizontal control over the multi-stage process.

Tämä diplomityö käsittelee Isku Interior Oy:n tarjous-, tilaus- ja toimitusprosessin parantamista. Yrityksessä on käynnissä tehdasinvestointihanke, jonka yhteydessä myös tietojärjestelmiä uusitaan. Investoinnin yhteydessä myös nykyisten käytäntöjen parantamista tulee pohtia. Diplomityön tavoitteena on tutkia, miten tarjous-, tilaus- ja toimitusprosessia yrityksessä voidaan parantaa, jotta siihen käytettävä kokonaisaika vähenisi. Kokonaisprosessin nykytilaan perehdytään työssä kolmen analysoidun myyntiprojektin avulla. Työn keskeisimmät tulokset liittyvät tietojärjestelmien välisen tiedonkulun parantamiseen sekä tarjous-, tilaus- ja toimitusprosessin käytäntöjen parantamiseen. Tulevaisuudessa tarjous-, tilaus- ja toimitusprosessia tulisi johtaa projektina, jonka vaiheet ja vastuut on eritelty projektin vaihejakomallin mukaisesti.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli kehittää Fazer Suklaan oston tilaus-toimitusprosesseja, jotta raaka-aineet ja pakkausmateriaalit pystytään hoitamaan mahdollisimman tehokkaasti. Ensin selvitettiin kirjallisuuden avulla tilaus-toimitusprosessin päävaiheet ja niihin vaikuttavat tekijät. Empiirisessä osassa lähdettiin liikkeelle käymällä läpi Fazer Suklaan oston nykytilanne, joka tehtiin ostajille suunnatun aikaselvityksen, haastatteluiden ja nykyisten tilaus-toimitusprosessien kuvaamisen avulla. Tavoitetilanteen rakentaminen aloitettiin ostettavien materiaalien ja toimittajien luokittelemisella. Tämän perusteella nämä materiaalit voitiin jakaa kolmen eri tilaus toimitusprosessin alle. Automaattisessa tilaus-toimitusprosessissa eri vaiheet automatisoidaan yhdessäavain toimittajien kanssa. Puoliautomaattinen prosessi perustuu systeemiin, jossa toimittaja näkee internetin kautta Fazerin tuotantosuunnitelman ja tekee tämän perusteella materiaalien täydennykset. Yksinkertaisessa prosessissa ostoarvoltaan alhaiset materiaalit hoidetaan mahdollisimman lähellä käyttöpistettä ja prosessin vaiheet tehdään mandollisimman pienellä työmäärällä. Tavoiteprosessien implementoinnilla todettiin suurimmiksi eduiksi prosessivaiheiden vähentyminen ja manuaalisen työn automatisoituminen. Tätä kautta saatiin prosessin eri vaiheiden työmäärää vähennettyä, sekä alennettua varastotasoja ja näin tilaus toimitusprosessin kokonaiskustannuksia pystyttiin pienentämään.

Development and Characterization of L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine Containing Pellets employing Extrusion-Spheronization Method and Drying Process in Fluidized Bad Equipment"". In this work, five formulations of L-alanyl-L-glutamine (glutamine dipeptide) containing pellets with different drug concentration were developed and evaluated: F1 (9.07%); F2 (17.70%); F3 (27.98%); F4 (37.74%) e F5 (47.53%). Pellets were prepared by extrusion-spheronization method and, further, dried in fluidized bad equipment. The following assays were carried out with the batches obtained: granulometry, friability, true density and morphologic analysis. Between the five formulations evaluated, pellets obtained from F3 present best yield (75.80%), most uniform particle size distribution (89.67% of pellets with size in the range of 0.80 to 1.18), most high true density (2.1634 g/ml) and best aspect (1.0795 +/- 0.0410). Due to these features, pellets obtained from F3 were considered adequate to further polymeric coating process in order to produce a multiparticulate system to prolong L-alanyl-L-glutamine release.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the opinions of women regarding the satisfaction about the quality of maternity care received. We hope to establish whether health care technology increases satisfaction or whether it actually interferes with the construction of personal satisfaction in the process of care. Design and setting: Information was gathered using the focus group technique. The area of study comprised the post-natal groups run as part of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme of the Catalan Health Authority. (Spain) Participants: Five focus groups were held between May 2006 and July 2007. Findings: Quality of care is a complex concept in which a number of independent core features can be identified. We have grouped these core features into three basic categories. Safety: the hospital and its technological facilities, and the technical expertise of health professionals. The other two main pillars of quality of care are the human dimension of the relationship between the carers and the patient, and finally the structural aspects that determine the context in which the heath care is provided. Key conclusions and implications for practice: The mothers of our study feel satisfied with healthcare technology and view it as a source of security; technology become indispensable features in order to reduce the anxiety provoked by the perceived lack of confidence in their ability as mothers. In this study, women, both during pregnancy and especially when giving birth, believe their feelings and values should be understood by professionals, from whom they seek empathy and a personal commitment, and not just information.

This thesis describes the preparation of polymersomes from poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polycarbonate (PEG-PC) copolymers functionalized with pendant coumarin groups. Coumarin groups undergo photo-reversible dimerization when irradiated with specific ultraviolet wavelengths, so they can be used to prepare polymers with photo-responsive properties. In this case, the pendant coumarin groups enable stabilization of the polymersome membrane through photo-crosslinking of the hydrophobic block. Initially, several novel cinnamoyl and coumarin functionalized cyclic carbonate monomers were synthesized using ester, ether, or amide linkages. While the homopolymerization of these functionalized monomers proved challenging due to their high melting points, both cinnamoyl and coumarin functionalized monomers were successfully copolymerized with trimethylene carbonate (TMC) at 100 ℃ using a catalyst-free melt polymerization process where the TMC doubled as a solvent for the higher melting point monomer. Using this system, polycarbonate copolymers with up to 33% incorporation of the functionalized monomers were prepared. In addition, an investigation of some anomalous polymerization results identified previously unreported triethylamine-based catalysts for the melt polymerization of carbonate monomers. These studies also demonstrated that the catalyst-free polymerization of TMC occurs faster and at lower temperatures than previously reported. Subsequently, the photo-crosslinking of cinnamoyl and coumarin functionalized polycarbonates was compared and coumarin was identified as the more effective crosslinking agent when using 300-400 nm UV. An investigation of the photo-reversibility of the coumarin dimerization revealed no discernible change in the properties of crosslinked networks, but rapid photo-reversion in dilute solutions. The photo-crosslinking and photo-reversion kinetics of the coumarin functionalized polycarbonates were determined to be second-order in both cases. Finally, the self-assembly of PEG-PC diblock copolymers functionalized with coumarin was examined and both reverse solvent evaporation and solvent displacement were found to induce self-assembly, with hydrophilic mass fractions (f-factors) of 12-28% resulting in the formation of solid microparticles and nanoparticles and f-factors of 33-43% resulting in the formation of polymersomes. The stabilization of these polymersome membranes through photo-initiator-free photo-crosslinking was demonstrated with the crosslinking allowing polymersomes to withstand centrifugation at 12,000 x g. In addition, the encapsulation of calcein, as a model small molecule drug, in the stabilized polymersomes was successfully demonstrated using confocal microscopy.

Improvements to the current state of the art in microfabricated cantilevers are investigated in order to realize enhanced functionality and increased versatility for use in ultrafast electrophoretic molecular sorting and delivery. Design rationale and fabrication process flow are described for six types of electro-thermal microcantilevers. Devices have been tailored for the process of separating mixtures of heterogeneous molecules into discrete detectable bands based on electrophoretic mobility, and delivering them to a conductive substrate using electric fields. Four device types include integrated heating elements capable of warming samples to catalyze reactions or cleaning the device for reuse. Similar devices have been shown to be capable of targeting temperatures between ambient conditions and the melting point of silicon, to within 0.1˚C precision or better. All microcantilevers types are equipped with a highly doped conductive silicon tip capable of interacting with a conductive substrate to deliver molecules under the presence of an electric field. Devices are equipped with additional electrodes to aid in sorting molecules on the surface of the probe end. Two designs contain two legs and one additional sorting electrode while four designs contain three legs and have two sorting electrodes. Devices having two sorting electrodes are designed to be capable of sorting three or more molecular species, a distinctive advancement in the state of the art. A detailed process flow of the fabrication process for all six electro-thermal cantilever designs are explained in detail.

Among several process variability sources, valve friction and inadequate controller tuning are supposed to be two of the most prevalent. Friction quantification methods can be applied to the development of model-based compensators or to diagnose valves that need repair, whereas accurate process models can be used in controller retuning. This paper extends existing methods that jointly estimate the friction and process parameters, so that a nonlinear structure is adopted to represent the process model. The developed estimation algorithm is tested with three different data sources: a simulated first order plus dead time process, a hybrid setup (composed of a real valve and a simulated pH neutralization process) and from three industrial datasets corresponding to real control loops. The results demonstrate that the friction is accurately quantified, as well as ""good"" process models are estimated in several situations. Furthermore, when a nonlinear process model is considered, the proposed extension presents significant advantages: (i) greater accuracy for friction quantification and (ii) reasonable estimates of the nonlinear steady-state characteristics of the process. Background and Aims: To test whether different degrees of immunologic and fibrotic airway remodeling processes occur in idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs), with impact on functional tests and survival, we studied the collagen/elastic system and immune cell density in the bronchiolar interstitium of lungs with the major types of IIPs. Materials and Methods: Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and morphometric analysis were used to evaluate collagen/elastic fibers and immune cells in the bronchiolar interstitium of open lung biopsies of patients with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia [COP/organizing pneumonia (OP) = 10], acute interstitial pneumonia [AIP/diffuse alveolar damage (DAD) = 20], nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP/NSIP = 20) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis/usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) = 20. Results: OP lungs presented a significant increase in collagenous/elastic fibers and in the total density of immune cells in the bronchiolar interstitium compared to controls, DAD, NSIP and UIP. We observed a significant increase in CD4, CD8 and CD20 lymphocytes, as well as in neutrophils, macrophages and plasma cells in OP. The increased amount of elastic fibers in the bronchiolar interstitium from OP lungs has a direct association with forced vital capacity (FVC) (r(s) = 0.99, P = 0.03). The most important survival predictor was CD20+ lymphocytes in the bronchiolar interstitium. In decreasing order, patients with UIP [Odds Ratio (OR) = 35.01], high forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/FVC FVC (OR = 7.01), increased CD20+ lymphocytes (OR = 4.44) and collagenous/elastic fiber densities (OR = 2.03 and OR = 1.49, respectively) in the bronchiolar interstitium were those who had the greatest risk of death, followed by those with AIP, NSIP and COP. Conclusion: Different degrees of immunologic and fibroelastotic airway remodeling processes occur in the major types of IIPs with impact on physiological tests and survival.

The synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with monodispere size distributions, their self assembly into ordered arrays and their magnetic behavior as a function of structural order (ferrofluids and 2D assemblies) are presented. Magnetic colloids of monodispersed, passivated, cobalt nanocrystals were produced by the rapid pyrolysis of cobalt carbonyl in solution. The size, size distribution (std. dev.< 5%) and the shape of the nanocrystals were controlled by varying the surfactant, its concentration, the reaction rate and the reaction temperature. The Co particles are defect-free single crystals with a complex cubic structure related to the beta phase of manganese (epsilon-Co). In the 2D assembly, a collective behavior was observed in the low-field susceptibility measurements where the magnetization of the zero field cooled process increases steadily and the magnetization of the field cooling process is independent the temperature. This was different from the observed behavior in a sample comprised of disordered interacting particles. A strong paramagnetic contribution appears at very low temperatures where the magnetization increases drastically after field cooling the sample. This has been attributed to the Co surfactant-particle interface since no magnetic atomic impurities are present in these samples.

Pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää millaisia muutoksia uusi SAP-pohjainen järjestelmä aiheuttaa metsäteollisuusyrityksen hankinta-prosesseissa ja ostajien työssä. Tilannetta tarkasteltiin myös liiketoiminta-prosessien uudistamisprojektina. Tutkimus oli kvalitatiivinen case-tutkimus, jonka lähteinä olivat haastattelut ja prosessikuvaukset. Hankintaprosessit on pyritty standardisoimaan ja kuvaamaan tarkasti, koska järjestelmä on tarkoitus ottaa vähitellen käyttöön yrityksen kaikissa toimipisteissä. Teoriaosassa käsiteltiin globaalia hankintaa, erilaisia tilauksia, sähköistä liiketoimintaa ja uudistettujen liiketoimintaprosessien käyttöönottoa sekä siihen liittyviä haasteita. Yritys pyrkii kehittämään hankintatoimintaansa ja hyödyntämään kokonsa tuomia mittakaavaetuja, uusi järjestelmä on merkittävä osa tätä kehitystyötä. Haastattelujen perusteella uusi järjestelmä on toivottu ja siihen kohdistuu paljon odotuksia. Järjestelmän käyttöönotto tulee olemaanhaastava tehtävä, koska järjestelmän käyttäjiä on paljon ja loppukäyttäjät tekevät entistä enemmän tapahtumia järjestelmään tilausaloitteiden ja kotiinkutsujenmuodossa. Tehdasostajien roolissa tapahtuu muutoksia, rutiinitilaamisen vähentyessä he toimivat tietoa molempiin suuntiin jakavina linkkeinä keskitetyn hankinta-organisaation ja tehtaan välissä.
