Cheap and readily available iodotrichlorosilane (SiCl4 / NaI) readily regenerates aldehydes and ketones from cyclic and acyclic acetals and ketals, in 20–60 min at ambient temperature. The reaction is highly chemoselective as phenolic ethers and esters are not cleaved. The pathway for the process is unlike any previously proposed.

Catalytic amount of vanadium reagent with tert-butylhydroperoxide as the oxidant was found to be an excellent oxidizing agent in aqueous medium. Vanadium pentoxide with aq tert-butylhydroperoxide readily oxidizes primary benzylic azides to the corresponding acids and secondary benzylic azides to the corresponding ketones in excellent yields. Further, vanadium pentoxide and aq tert-butylhydroperoxide combination turned out to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols. Using vanadium pentoxide and aq tert-butylhydroperoxide primary alcohols were oxidized to the corresponding acids, whereas secondary alcohols underwent a smooth transformation to furnish corresponding ketones in excellent yields. All the oxidations are performed in water. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Conformationally flexible NUPHOS-type diphosphines have been resolved as their diastereopure platinum BINOLate complexes delta- and lambda-[(NUPHOS)Pt{(S)-BINOL}] and the corresponding enantiopure Lewis acids delta- and lambda-[(NUPHOS)Pt(OTf)(2)], being generated by protonation with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, act as highly efficient catalysts for the hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of nonactivated conjugated dienes with aryl glyoxals and glyoxylate esters, giving ee's as high as 99%.

Photoexcited electrochemically generated quinone radical anions reduced 1,2-dibromobenzene to bromobenzene, 1,4-dibromobenzene to bromobenzene and 4-chlorobenzonitrile to benzonitrile. In the presence of anthracene, 2-bromophenyl-, 4-bromophenyl- and 4-cyanophenyl-anthracenes were formed. With acetaldehyde, acetone, acetophenone, benzaldehyde and benzophenone, the major products were the corresponding pinacols, with small amounts of the two-electron secondary alcohols. In acetonitrile as solvent, cinnamonitriles, hydrocinnamonitriles and phenylglutaronitriles were formed in addition to the alcohols. Glyoxylic acid was reduced to tartaric, glycolic and malic acids. The reduction of CO2 was unsuccessful.

The implementation of chiral centres within biologically active compounds has been a perplexing yet motivational force in chemistry. This work presents the attempted formation of a concurrent or sequential tandem catalyzed methodology of enantioselective nucleophilic addition and electrophilic cyclization. The 2'- arylalkynyl- aldehyde, ketone, and imine substrates used within were adeptly chosen with a dually activated structure; 1) for nucleophilic addition to the electrophilic substituents; and 2) for carbophilic activation of the alkyne substituent to undergo cyclization. To accomplish the nucleophilic addition, two distinct allylation methodologies were pursued: (/?)-BINOL catalyzed-allylboration and (5)- BINAP-AgF catalyzed-allylsilylation. BINAP catalyzed enantioselective allylation of 2'-arylalkynyl-aldehydes, to form chiral homoallylic alcohols, was successful. Homoallylic alcohols were isolated with high enantio-purity (>80%), which then underwent sequential cyclization to form chiral allylic phthalans, in moderate yields. An application of this methodology towards the construction of biologically active compounds was included with the partial synthesis of the natural product and H. pylori inhibitor, (+)-Spirolaxine methyl ether.
