Brazil has an important role in the biomass burning, with the detection of approximately 100,000 burning spots in a single year (2007). Most of these spots occur in the southern part of the Amazon basin during the dry season (from August to november) and these emissions reach the southeast of the country, a highly populated region and with serious urban air pollution problems. With the growing demand on biofuels, sugarcane is considerably expanding in the state of São Paulo, being a strong contributor to the bad air quality in this region. In the state of São Paulo, the main land use are pasture and sugarcane crop, that covers around 50% and 10% of the total area, respectively. Despite the aerosol from sugarcane burning having reduced atmospheric residence time, from a few days to some weeks, they might get together with those aerosol which spread over long distances (hundreds to thousands of kilometers). In the period of June through February 2010 a LIDAR observation campaign was carried in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in order to observe and characterize optically the aerosols from two distinct sources, namely, sugar cane biomass burning and industrial emissions. For this purpose 2 LIDAR systems were available, one mobile and the other placed in a laboratory, both working in the visible (532 nm) and additionally the mobile system had a Raman channel available (607 nm). Also this campaign counted with a SODAR, a meteorological RADAR specially set up to detect aerosol echoes and gas-particle analyzers. To guarantee a good regional coverage 4 distinct sites were available to deploy the instruments, 2 in the near field of biomass burning activities (Rio Claro and Bauru), one for industrial emissions (Cubatão) and others from urban sources (São Paulo). The whole campaign provide the equivalent of 30 days of measurements which allowed us to get aerosol optical properties such as backscattering/extinction coefficients, scatter and LIDAR ratios, those were used to correlate with air quality and meteorological indicators and quantities. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht mittels lichtunterstützter Tunnelmikroskopie (STM) den Elektronentransport in farbstoffbedeckten, nanoporösen TiO2-Schichten, die in photoelektrochemischen Solarzellen eingesetzt werden. Transportrelevante Eigenschaften wie die elektronische Zustandsdichte sowie lichtinduzierte Vorgänge wie der Aufbau einer lichtinduzierten Oberflächenladung und lokale Photoströme werden ortsaufgelöst gemessen. Für einen möglichen Einsatz in lichtunterstützter Tunnelmikroskopie werden desweiteren Gold-Nanopartikel auf einer Amino-Hexanthiol-Monolage auf Coulomb-Blockaden untersucht. Den zweite Schwerpunkt stellen methodische Arbeiten zur Messung optischer Nahfelder in STM-Experimenten dar. Erstens sollen die Vorteile von Apertur- und aperturloser optischer Rasternahfeld-Mikroskopie mit komplett metallisierten Faserspitzen verbunden werden, die durch die Faser beleuchtet werden. Es gelingt nicht, theoretisch vorhergesagte hohe optische Auflösungen zu bestätigen. Zweitens werden transparente Spitzen aus Sb-dotiertem Zinnoxid erfolgreich als Tunnelspitzen getestet. Die Spitzen ermöglichen STM-Elektrolumineszenz-Experimente zur Charakterisierung optischer Nahfelder, ohne diese durch eine metallische Spitze zu beeinträchtigen. In einer STM-Studie wird das Selbstorganisations-Verhalten von Oktanthiol und Oktandithiol auf Au(111) aus Ethanol untersucht. Bei geringer relativer Konzentration der Dithiole (1:2000), bildet sich eine Phase liegender Dithiole, deren Ordnung durch die Präsenz der Oktanthiole katalysiert wird. Schließlich wird ein als 'dynamische Tunnelmikroskopie' bezeichneter Modus für die Tunnelmikroskopie in elektrisch leitfähiger Umgebung erfolgreich getestet, der zur Unterdrückung des elektrochemischen Leckstromanteils die Ableitung des Stroms nach dem Abstand als STM-Abstandssignal verwendet.

Mass transfer across a gas-liquid interface was studied theoretically and experimentally, using transfer of oxygen into water as the gas-liquid system. The experimental results support the conclusions of a theoretical description of the concentration field that uses random square waves approximations. The effect of diffusion over the concentration records was quantified. It is shown that the peak of the normalized rills concentration fluctuation profiles must be lower than 0.5, and that the position of the peak of the rms value is an adequate measure of the thickness of the diffusive layer. The position of the peak is the boundary between the regions more subject to molecular diffusion or to turbulent transport of dissolved mass.

The flow field and the energy transport near thermoacoustic couples are simulated using a 2D full Navier-Stokes solver. The thermoacoustic couple plate is maintained at a constant temperature; plate lengths, which are short and long compared with the particle displacement lengths of the acoustic standing waves, are tested. Also investigated are the effects of plate spacing and the amplitude of the standing wave. Results are examined in the form of energy vectors, particle paths, and overall entropy generation rates. These show that a net heat-pumping effect appears only near the edges of thermoacoustic couple plates, within about a particle displacement distance from the ends. A heat-pumping effect can be seen even on the shortest plates tested when the plate spacing exceeds the thermal penetration depth. It is observed that energy dissipation near the plate increases quadratically as the plate spacing is reduced. The results also indicate that there may be a larger scale vortical motion outside the plates which disappears as the plate spacing is reduced. (C) 2002 Acoustical Society of America.

For polynomial vector fields in R3, in general, it is very difficult to detect the existence of an open set of periodic orbits in their phase portraits. Here, we characterize a class of polynomial vector fields of arbitrary even degree having an open set of periodic orbits. The main two tools for proving this result are, first, the existence in the phase portrait of a symmetry with respect to a plane and, second, the existence of two symmetric heteroclinic loops.

The thesis on the"Benthic ecology of selected prawn culture fields and ponds near Cochin” was taken up with a view to provide information on the qualitative and quantitative distribution of benthos and their relationships to prawnproduction of different culture ecosystems and to the physico-chemical parameters influencing their production. A two-year observation was carried out in nine selected prawn culture systems including perennial ponds (stations 1 to 4) seasonal fields (stations 5 to 7) and contiguous canals (stations 8 and 9) during December 1988 to November 1989. All macro- and meiobenthic organisms contributing to the faua were identified and their abundance, distribution, diversity, biomass and trophic relationships between benthos and prawns were studied. The environmental variables studied were temperature pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, nitrite-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, amonianitrogen, phosphate and silicate of bottom water and organic carbon and texture of the soil The thesis is presented in 4 Chapters. Chapter I presents an’ INTRODUCTION to the topic of study and a review of relevant works to bring an awareness to the present status of research in benthos and benthic ecology. Chapter 11, MATERIALS AND MTHODS, includes the techniques of sampling, preservation of samples and methods of analyses of various physico-chemical factors and area covered under the study is also given in this chapter. Chapter III, HYDROGRAPHY deals with the results of investigation and discussion onthe physico-chemical parameters of water and Chapter IV, SEDIMENT covers the sedimentoloical characteristics of the different culture systems followed by a detailed discussion. Chapter V, BOTTOM FAUNA presents an account on the various aspects of benthos and benthic ecology and the details of prawn production. A discussion on the overall assessment of interrelations between abiotic and biotic factors is given in Chapter VI, DISCUSSION. A critical evaluation of the implication of benthic production on prawn production under culture conditions and trophic relationships are also included in this chapter. An executive SUMMARY of the observations made during this study is presented in the final section of the thesis .

This paper deals with semi-global C(k)-solvability of complex vector fields of the form L = partial derivative/partial derivative t + x(r) (a(x) + ib(x))partial derivative/partial derivative x, r >= 1, defined on Omega(epsilon) = (-epsilon, epsilon) x S(1), epsilon > 0, where a and b are C(infinity) real-valued functions in (-epsilon, epsilon). It is shown that the interplay between the order of vanishing of the functions a and b at x = 0 influences the C(k)-solvability at Sigma = {0} x S(1). When r = 1, it is permitted that the functions a and b of L depend on the x and t variables, that is, L = partial derivative/partial derivative t + x(a(x, t) + ib(x, t))partial derivative/partial derivative x, where (x, t) is an element of Omega(epsilon).

We study the Gevrey solvability of a class of complex vector fields, defined on Omega(epsilon) = (-epsilon, epsilon) x S(1), given by L = partial derivative/partial derivative t + (a(x) + ib(x))partial derivative/partial derivative x, b not equivalent to 0, near the characteristic set Sigma = {0} x S(1). This work deals with the solvability near the characteristic set Sigma = {0} x S-1 of operators of the form L = partial derivative/partial derivative t+(x(n) a(x)+ ix(m) b(x))partial derivative/partial derivative x, b not equivalent to 0 and a(0) not equal 0, defined on Omega(epsilon) = (-epsilon, epsilon) x S-1, epsilon > 0, where a and b are real-valued smooth functions in (-epsilon, epsilon) and m >= 2n. It is shown that given f belonging to a subspace of finite codimension of C-infinity (Omega(epsilon)) there is a solution u is an element of L-infinity of the equation Lu = f in a neighborhood of Sigma; moreover, the L-infinity regularity is sharp.

Hydrothermal solutions were examined in a circulation system that started to develop after the 1991 volcanic eruption in the axial segment of the EPR between 9°45'N and 9°52'N. Within twelve years after this eruption, diffusion outflow of hot fluid from fractures in basaltic lavas gave way to focused seeps of hot solutions through channels of hydrothermal sulfide edifices. An example of the field Q demonstrates that from 1991 to 2003 H2S concentrations decreased from 86 to 1 mM/kg, and the Fe/H2S ratio simultaneously increased by factor 1.7. This fact can explain disappearance of microbial mats that were widespread within the fields before 1991. S isotopic composition of H2S does not depend on H2S concentration. This fact testifies rapid evolution of the hydrothermal system in the early years of its evolution. Carbon in CH4 from hot fluid sampled in 2003 is richer in 12C isotope than carbon in fluid from the hydrothermal field at 21°N EPR. It suggests that methane comes to the Q field from more than one source. Composition of particulate matter in hydrothermal solutions indicates that it was contributed by biological material. Experimental solutions with labeled substrates (t<70°C) show evidence of active processes of methane oxidation and sulfate reduction. Our results indicate that, during 12-year evolution of the hydrothermal system, composition of its solutions evolved and approached compositions of solutions in mature hydrothermal systems of the EPR.
