The global warming trend of the latest Oligocene was interrupted by several cooling events associated with Antarctic glaciations. These cooling events affected surface water productivity and plankton assemblages. Well-preserved radiolarians were obtained from upper Oligocene to lower Miocene sediments at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199 Sites 1218 and 1219 in the equatorial Pacific, and 110 radiolarian species were identified. Four episodes of significant radiolarian faunal changes were identified: middle late Oligocene (27.5 to 27.3 Ma), latest Oligocene (24.4 Ma), earliest Miocene (23.3 Ma), and middle early Miocene (21.6 Ma). These four episodes approximately coincide with increases and decreases of biogenic silica accumulation rates and increases in delta18O values coded as "Oi" and "Mi" events. These data indicate that Antarctic glaciations were associated with change of siliceous sedimentation patterns and faunal changes in the equatorial Pacific. Radiolarian fauna was divided into three assemblages based on variations in radiolarian productivity, species richness and the composition of dominant species: a late Oligocene assemblage (27.6 to 24.4 Ma), a transitional assemblage (24.4 to 23.3 Ma) and an early Miocene assemblage (23.3 to 21.2 Ma). The late Oligocene assemblage is characterized by relatively high productivity, low species richness and four dominant species of Tholospyris anthophora, Stichocorys subligata, Lophocyrtis nomas and Lithelius spp. The transitional assemblage represents relatively low values of productivity and species richness, and consists of three dominant species of T. anthophora, S. subligata and L. nomas. The characteristics of the early Miocene assemblage are relatively low productivity, but high species richness. The two dominant species present in this assemblage are T. anthophora and Cyrtocapsella tetrapera. The most significant faunal turnover of radiolarians is marked at the boundary between the transitional/early Miocene assemblages.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199, sediments were recovered from eight sites in the Central Pacific. Late Oligocene and early Miocene radiolarians are common to abundant and moderately well preserved in Cores 199-1218A-8H through 11H and 199-1219A-5H through 9H. More than 110 radiolarian species were encountered during this study. Of these species, 100 are identifiable forms and the rest are undescribed or unfamiliar forms. This report presents the relative abundances of described forms from the upper Oligocene to lower Miocene sediments.

We propose a new biostratigraphic scheme comprising the Eucyrtidium spinosum, Eucyrtidium antiquum (new), Lychnocanoma conica (emended), Clinorhabdus robusta (emended) and Stylosphaera radiosa (emended) Zones, in ascending order, in Eocene to Oligocene sediments drilled on Maud Rise in Southern Atlantic Ocean (Site 689, Ocean Drilling Program Leg 113). The bases of these zones are defined by the lowermost occurrences of E. spinosum, E. antiquum, L. conica, C. robusta and the uppermost occurrence of Axoprunum irregularis (?), respectively. From correlation to the magnetostratigraphic data, the E. spinosum, E. antiquum, L. conica, C. robusta and S. radiosa Zones are assigned to the late middle Eocene through late Eocene (Subchrons C17n2 to C13r), earliest Oligocene (C13n to C11n), late early Oligocene (C11n to C10n2), early late Oligocene (C10n1 to C8r) and latest Oligocene (C8r to C7An), respectively. The four boundary datum levels and supplementary datum levels such as the lowermost occurrences of A. irregularis (?), Dicolocapsa microcephala and Lithomelissa challengerae may be recognized in other ODP sites in the Southern Ocean. The first occurrence of E. antiquum approximates the Eocene-Oligocene boundary in Southern Ocean but the last occurrences of many species such as Periphaena decora, D. microcephala and the Lithomelissa sphaerocephalis group are commonly diachronous between high latitude sites. Two new species, Theocyrtis (?) triapenna and Spirocyrtis parvaturris, are described.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 199, eight sites (Sites 1215-1222) were cored in the Central Pacific. Late Eocene-early Oligocene thick radiolarian-rich biogenic sediments were collected from Holes 1218A, 1219A, and 1220A. This is the first attempt to calibrate the ages of Paleogene radiolarian events using magnetostratigraphy in this region. A total of 107 species and species groups, which are valuable for stratigraphic correlation, are listed with numeric data and figures. Among these three holes, a total of 77 radiolarian events were recognized and their ages were calibrated by correlation with paleomagnetic events recorded in Hole 1220A.

Background and Purpose: The morbidity from spontaneous hemorrhage of untreated brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM) is not well described. Methods: The 241 consecutive AVM patients (mean age 3716 years, 52% women) from the prospective Columbia AVM Databank initially presenting with hemorrhage were evaluated using the Rankin Scale (RS) and the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). From the 241 AVM patients, 29 (12%) had subsequent intracranial hemorrhage during follow-up. For further comparisons, 84 non-AVM patients with intracerebral hemorrhage from the Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS) served as a control group. Results: In 241 AVM patients presenting with hemorrhage the median RS was 2 and the median NIHSS was 1 (49% RS 0 to 1, 61% NIHSS 2). The median time between hemorrhage and clinical evaluation was 11 days (mean 219 days). Recurrent AVM hemorrhage during follow-up resulted in no significant increase in morbidity (median RS 2, P0.004; median NIHSS 3, P0.322; time between hemorrhage and study evaluation: median 55 days, mean 657 days). Among AVM-hemorrhage subtypes, parenchymatous AVM hemorrhage was associated with higher stroke morbidity (odds ratio, 2.9; 95% CI, 1.5 to 5.8 for NIHSS 2) than nonparenchymatous hemorrhages. Parenchymatous AVM hemorrhage had a significantly better outcome (median NIHSS 1) than non-AVM related hemorrhage (median NIHSS 12; P0.0001). Conclusions: Hemorrhage, either at initial presentation or during follow-up of untreated AVM patients appears to carry
