This work introduces a Gaussian variational mean-field approximation for inference in dynamical systems which can be modeled by ordinary stochastic differential equations. This new approach allows one to express the variational free energy as a functional of the marginal moments of the approximating Gaussian process. A restriction of the moment equations to piecewise polynomial functions, over time, dramatically reduces the complexity of approximate inference for stochastic differential equation models and makes it comparable to that of discrete time hidden Markov models. The algorithm is demonstrated on state and parameter estimation for nonlinear problems with up to 1000 dimensional state vectors and compares the results empirically with various well-known inference methodologies.

The paper is devoted to the study of the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear differential equation of complex order with the Caputo fractional derivative. The equivalence of this problem and a nonlinear Volterra integral equation in the space of continuously differentiable functions is established. On the basis of this result, the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the considered Cauchy problem is proved. The approximate-iterative method by Dzjadyk is used to obtain the approximate solution of this problem. Two numerical examples are given.

Some new nonlinear integral inequalities that involve the maximum of the unknown scalar function of one variable are solved. The considered inequalities are generalizations of the classical nonlinear integral inequality of Bihari. The importance of these integral inequalities is defined by their wide applications in qualitative investigations of differential equations with "maxima" and it is illustrated by some direct applications.

Stability of nonlinear impulsive differential equations with "supremum" is studied. A special type of stability, combining two different measures and a dot product on a cone, is defined. Perturbing cone-valued piecewise continuous Lyapunov functions have been applied. Method of Razumikhin as well as comparison method for scalar impulsive ordinary differential equations have been employed.

The phenomenon of patterned distribution of pH near the cell membrane of the algae Chara corallina upon illumination is well-known. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model, based on the detailed kinetic analysis of proton fluxes across the cell membrane, to explain this phenomenon. The model yields two coupled nonlinear partial differential equations which describe the spatial dynamics of proton concentration changes and transmembrane potential generation. The experimental observation of pH pattern formation, its period and amplitude of oscillation, and also its hysteresis in response to changing illumination, are all reproduced by our model. A comparison of experimental results and predictions of our theory is made. Finally, a mechanism for pattern formation in Chara corallina is proposed.

We consider a parametric nonlinear Neumann problem driven by a nonlinear nonhomogeneous differential operator and with a Caratheodory reaction $f\left( t,x\right) $ which is $p-$superlinear in $x$ without satisfying the usual in such cases Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. We prove a bifurcation type result describing the dependence of the positive solutions on the parameter $\lambda>0,$ we show the existence of a smallest positive solution $\overline{u}_{\lambda}$ and investigate the properties of the map $\lambda\rightarrow\overline{u}_{\lambda}.$ Finally we also show the existence of nodal solutions.

The finite time extinction phenomenon (the solution reaches an equilibrium after a finite time) is peculiar to certain nonlinear problems whose solutions exhibit an asymptotic behavior entirely different from the typical behavior of solutions associated to linear problems. The main goal of this work is twofold. Firstly, we extend some of the results known in the literature to the case in which the ordinary time derivative is considered jointly with a fractional time differentiation. Secondly, we consider the limit case when only the fractional derivative remains. The latter is the most extraordinary case, since we prove that the finite time extinction phenomenon still appears, even with a non-smooth profile near the extinction time. Some concrete examples of quasi-linear partial differential operators are proposed. Our results can also be applied in the framework of suitable nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equations.
