By using the mass-analyzed low energy dual ion beam deposition technique, a high quality epitaxial, insulating cerium dioxide thin film with a thickness of about 2000 Angstrom, has been grown on a silicon (111) substrate. The component species, cerium and oxygen, are homogeneous in depth, and have the correct stoichiometry for CeO2. X-ray double-crystal diffraction shows that the full width at half maximum of the (222) and (111) peaks of the film are less than 23 and 32 s, respectively, confirming that the film is a perfect single crystal. GaN buffer layers (thickness ~60nm) grown on GaAs(001) by low-temperature MOCVD are investigated by X-ray diffraction pole figure measurements using synchrotron radiation in order to understand the heteroepitaxial growth features of GaN on GaAs(001) substrates. In addition to the epitaxially aligned crystallites, their corresponding twins of the first and the second order are found in the X-ray diffraction pole figures. Moreover, { 111 } q scans with χ at 55° reveal the abnormal distribution of Bragg diffractions. The extra intensity maxima in the pole fig ures shows that the process of twinning plays a dominating role during the growth process. It is suggested that the polarity of { 111 } facets emerged on (001) surface will affect the growth-twin nucleation at the initial stages of GaN growth on GaAs(001) substrates. It is proposed that twinning is prone to occurring on { 111 } B, N-terminated facets.

Diagonal self-assembled InAs quantum wire (QWR) arrays with the stacked InAs/In0.52Al0.48As structure are grown on InP substrates, which are (001)-oriented and misoriented by 6degrees towards the [100] direction. Both the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and migration enhanced epitaxy (MEE) techniques are employed. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that whether a diagonal InAs QWR array of the stacked InAs/InAlAs is symmetrical about the growth direction or not depends on the growth method as well as substrate orientation. Asymmetry in the diagonal MEE-grown InAs QWR array can be ascribed to the influence of surface reconstruction on upward migration of adatoms during the self-assembly of the InAs quantum wires.

ZnO:Al thin films with c-axis preferred orientation were deposited on glass and Si substrates using RF magnetron sputtering technique. The effect of substrate on the structural and optical properties of ZnO:Al films were investigated. The results showed a strong blue peak from glass-substrate ZnO:Al film whose intensity became weak when deposited on Si substrate. However, the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of the Si-substrate ZnO:Al (0 0 2) peaks decreased evidently and the grain size increased. Finally, we discussed the influence of annealing temperature on the structural and optical properties of Si-substrate ZnO:Al films. After annealing, the crystal quality of Si-substrate ZnO:Al thin films was markedly improved and the intensity of blue peak (similar to 445 nm) increased noticeably. This observation may indicate that the visible emission properties of the ZnO:Al films are dependent more on the film crystallinity than on the film stoichiometry. We demonstrate a low threshold polymer solid state thin-film distributed feedback (DFB) laser on an InP substrate with the DFB structure. The used gain medium is conjugated polymer poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1, 4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) doped polystyrene (PS) and formed by drop-coating method. The second order Bragg scattering region on the InP substrate gave rise to strong feedback, thus a lasing emission at 638.9nm with a line width of 1.2nm is realized when pumped by a 532nm frequency-doubled Nd: YAG pulsed laser. The devices show a laser threshold as low as 7 nJ/pulse.

Hole mobility in a copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc)-based top-contact transistor has been studied with various organic layer thicknesses. It is found that the transistor performance depends on the thickness of the CuPc layer, and the mobility increases with the increase in the CuPc layer and saturated at the thickness of 6 ML. The upper layers do not actively contribute to the carrier transport in the organic films. The morphology of the organic layer grown on the bare SiO2/Si substrate is also presented. The analysis of spatial correlations shows that the CuPc films grow on the SiO2 according to the mixed-layer mode.

An interesting interface structure between diamond film and silicon substrate has been observed. That is, according to the deformation of the diamond film crystal sturcture, a strictly 3:2 matching of the two lattices across the interface is obtained. This result clearly indicates that misfit dislocations at the interface and "epitaxial tilting" are not the only two ways to overcome the 1.5% residual misfit.

The adsorption of a C60 monolayer on a graphite substrate was modelled via molecular dynamics simulation covering a significant period of 160 picoseconds. The final configuration of C60s agrees closely with that observed in a scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiment. Clusters of adsorbed molecules were then selected and their STM-like images were computed via the Keldysh Green function method.

A computer-based numerical modelling of the adsorption process of gas phase metallic particles on the surface of a graphite substrate has been performed via the application of molecular dynamics simulation method. The simulation relates to an extensive STM-based experiment performed in this field, and reproduces part of the experimental results. Both two-body and many-body inter-atomic potentials have been employed. A Morse-type potential describing the metal-carbon interactions at the interface was specifically formulated for this modelling. Intercalation of silver in graphite has been observed as well as the correct alignments of monomers, dimers and two-dimensional islands on the surface. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of rhodanine adsorbed on silver nanoparticles have been examined using 514.5 and 632.8 nm excitation. There is evidence that, under the experimental conditions used, rhodanine undergoes a nanoparticle surface-induced reaction resulting in the formation of a dimeric species via the active methylene group in a process which is analogous to the Knoevenagel reaction. The experimental observations are supported by DFT calculations at the B3-LYP/cc-pVDZ level. Calculated energies for the interaction of the E and Z isomers of the dimers of rhodanine with silver nanoparticles support a model in which the (intra-molecular hydrogen bonded) E isomer dimer is of lower energy than the Z isomer. A strong band, at 1566 cm(-1), in the SERS spectrum of rhodanine is assigned to the nu(C=C) mode of the dimer species.

In mixed signal integrated circuits noise from the digital circuitry can upset the sensitive analogue circuitry. The Faraday cage structure reported here is based on the unique ground plane SOI technology developed some of the authors. The suppression of crosstalk achieved is an order of magnitude greater than that previously published for frequencies up to 10 GHz. The significance of the technology will be even greater as the operating frequency is increased. This collaborative EPSRC project was judge as tending to outstanding.

A modification of liquid source misted chemical deposition process (LSMCD) with heating mist and substrate has developed, and this enabled to control mist penetrability and fluidity on sidewalls of three-dimensional structures and ensure step coverage. A modified LSMCD process allowed a combinatorial approach of Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PZT) thin films and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) toward ultrahigh integration density of ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAMs). The CNTs templates were survived during the crystallization process of deposited PZT film onto CNTs annealed at 650 degrees C in oxygen ambient due to a matter of minute process, so that the thermal budget is quite small. The modified LSMCD process opens up the possibility to realize the nanoscale capacitor structure of ferroelectric PZT film with CNTs electrodes toward ultrahigh integration density FeRAMs.

Na+ ions have a detrimental effect on the photocatalytic activity of thin sot gel films deposited on soda lime glass due to their diffusion into the film during the calcination process. Given that the content of sodium in glass substrate might be the crucial parameter in determining the activity of a photocatalyst, the aim of the present work was the comparison of the photoinduced properties of a thin TiO2 film prepared on three different glass substrates namely on quartz (Q) glass, borosilicate (BS) glass and soda lime (SL) glass which have different sodium content. The prepared layers were characterised by X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectroscopy. The diffusion of Na+ from the substrate into the layers was determined by Glow Discharge Atomic Emission Spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the films were assessed using two model pollutant test systems (resazurin/resorufin ink and stearic acid film), which appeared to correlate reasonably well. It was observed that TiO2 layer on SL glass has a brookite crystalline structure while the TiO2 layer on BS and Q glass has an anatase crystalline structure. On the other hand, the photodegradation of the model dye on TiO2 films deposited on Q and BS glass is about an order higher than on SL glass. The low sodium content of BS glass makes it the most suitable substrate for the deposition of photoactive sol gel TiO2 films. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
