Despite many approaches proposed in the past, robotic climbing in a complex vertical environment is still a big challenge. We present here an alternative climbing technology that is based on thermoplastic adhesive (TPA) bonds. The approach has a great advantage because of its large payload capacity and viability to a wide range of flat surfaces and complex vertical terrains. The large payload capacity comes from a physical process of thermal bonding, while the wide applicability benefits from rheological properties of TPAs at higher temperatures and intermolecular forces between TPAs and adherends when being cooled down. A particular type of TPA has been used in combination with two robotic platforms, featuring different foot designs, including heating/cooling methods and construction of footpads. Various experiments have been conducted to quantitatively assess different aspects of the approach. Results show that an exceptionally high ratio of 500% between dynamic payloads and body mass can be achieved for stable and repeatable vertical climbing on flat surfaces at a low speed. Assessments on four types of typical complex vertical terrains with a measure, i.e., terrain shape index ranging from -0.114 to 0.167, return a universal success rate of 80%-100%. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Light and annealing induced changes in Si-H bonds in undoped a-Si:H have been investigated by a differential infrared spectroscopy method. The light-induced changes in Si-H bonds are not monotonic, quite different from the usual Staebler-Wronski effect in electronic properties, and involve more complicated physics. The magnitude of the light-induced changes in Si-H bonds is proportional to the hydrogen content in the film. There may exist more than one microscopic process which determine the light-induced changes in Si-H bonds. Almost the whole a-Si:H network is affected when a-Si:H is subjected to Light-soaking or to annealing. The light-induced changes in Si-H bonds may be an independent light-induced phenomenon or an auxiliary process of the metastable SWE defect creation. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Several vibrational bands were observed near 3100 cm(-1) in GaN that had been implanted with hydrogen at room temperature and subsequently annealed, Our results indicate that these bands are due to nitrogen-dangling-bond defects created by the implantation that an decorated by hydrogen, The frequencies are close to those predicted recently for V-Ga-H-n complexes, leading us to tentatively assign the new lines to V-Ga defects decorated with different numbers of H atoms. The influence of pulsed bias light excitation on the absorption in the defect region of undoped a-Si:H film has been investigated. Ac constant photocurrent method has been used to measure the absorption spectrum. The absorption in the defect region increases with the light pulse duration.The analysis of obtained results does not support the existence of a long time relaxation process of dangling-bond states in a-Si:H.

A new method developed for detecting possible subtle changes in Si-H bonds of a-Si:H after light soaking is described in detail. The method promises a sensitivity orders of magnitude higher than that reached by the usual IR spectrometer. Some preliminary results on phosphorus doped a-Si:H are given.
