The problematic of invasive species in an alien environment has aroused the attention of scientists all over the world for quite some time. One of the exotic tree species that has provoked special attention in the tropical drylands is Prosopis juliflora. Originating in South America, prosopis (hereafter referred to as prosopis) has been introduced in the hot and semi-arid zones of the world particularly to provide fuelwood, to stabilize sand dunes and to combat desertification. The tree has become an essential source for fuelwood and a provider of several other products and services in areas where it has become established. However, despite the numerous benefits the tree provides to rural people, in several regions prosopis has become a noxious weed with a negative impact on the environment and to the economy of farmers and landowners. In India, prosopis was introduced in Andhra Pradesh in 1877. The tree was then proclaimed as the precious child of the plant world by scientists and local people alike. The purpose of this study was to investigate the overall impact of prosopis on local rural livelihoods in the drylands of South India. Of particular interest was the examination of the different usages of the tree, especially as fuelwood, and people s perceptions of it. Furthermore, the study examined the negative impacts of the uncontrolled invasion of prosopis on croplands, and its occupation of the banks of irrigation canals and other water sources. As another central theme, this study analysed the Hindu classification system for nature and for trees in particular. In India, several tree species are regarded as sacred. This study examined the position of the exotic prosopis among sacred trees, such as the bodhi, banyan and neem trees. The principle method for collecting the field data was by using individual and thematic group interviews. These interviews were semi-structured with open ended questions. Moreover, unstructured interviews as well as general observations provided complementary information. The data were gathered during two fieldwork periods in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, in South India. The results confirmed that prosopis both provides benefits and causes hazards to different stakeholders. Farmers and agriculturalists suffer economic losses in areas where prosopis has invaded crop fields and competes with other plants for water and nutrients. On the other hand, for a significant number of poor rural people, prosopis has become an important source of livelihood benefits. This tree, which grows on government wastelands, is commonly a free resource for all and has thus become a major local source of fuelwood. It also provides several other goods and services and cash income that contributes to improve livelihoods in rural communities. Prosopis ranked lowest in the tree classificatioin system of the Hindus of South India. Although it is appreciated for many benefits it provides for poor people, it has remained an outsider compared with the indigenous tree species. On the other hand, the most sacred trees, such as the bodhi or the banyan, are completely excluded from extraction and it is seen as a sacrilege to even cut branches from any of these trees. An unexpected finding was that, in a few cases, prosopis had also been elevated to the status of a sacred tree. Goods and services from prosopis are not utilized in the most beneficial way. Silvicultural management practices are suggested that would provide additional income and employment opportunities. Interventions are recommended to control further invasion of the tree that might cause serious negative effects in the future. For Hindus, the sacred always ranks highest, even above economic gain. The conservation of sacred groves and sacred trees is a tradition that has its roots in ancient history. These socio-religious practices need to be respected and continued. Successful management of tree and forest resources depends on the willingness of the local people to manage their natural resources, and this willingness exists and has always existed in South India. Administrative sciences are fragmented into a number of subfields; the most important dividing line separating public administration and business administration. We argue, however, that it is useful to cross these borders in theory building and empirical analysis. Therefore, we focus in this paper on the comparison of municipal amalgamations and corporate mergers. More specifically, we examine how findings in research on corporate mergers could enlighten the scarce analysis of municipal amalgamations. The analysis of corporate mergers shows that the motives range from rational reasoning to empire building, that the decision-making is plagued by uncertainty, group-thinking and politics, and finally, that the post-merger integration processes are often characterized by cultural confrontation, identitybuilding challenges, and resistance. We explain how – with due caution – similar phenomena can also be detected and analyzed in the context of municipal amalgamations and develop specific propositions for future research in this area.

Viimeaikainen sukupuolta ja organisaatiota käsittelevä tutkimus ja kirjallisuus on saanut paljon (toisinaan epäsuoria) vaikutteita feminismiä ympäröivistä keskusteluista. Lisäksi naisten aseman ja kokemuksien tunnistaminen organisaatioissa ja johtamisessa on vaikuttanut tutkimukseen. Erilaisten kansainvälisesti tutkittujen aiheiden kirjo on laaja: sukupuolisuhteet organisaatioiden ja johtoryhmien kulttuureissa ja kommunikaatiossa; sukupuolittunut työnjako; sukupuolittuneet hierarkiat, valta, auktoriteetti ja johtajuus organisaatioissa ja johtamisessa; sukupuolittuneet markkinat; sukupuolittuneet kuvat, symbolit ja mainokset; sukupuoli ja IT teknologia; seksuaalisuus, häirintä, kiusaaminen ja väkivalta organisaatioissa; työn ja kodin yhteensovittaminen; ja niin edelleen. Myös akateemiset organisaatiot sekä niiden sukupuolittuneet valtasuhteet ja johtaminen kaipaavat kipeästi huomiota. Useimpia mainituista alueista on tutkittu ainakin jonkin verran mutta paljon työtä on vielä myös jäljellä. Tämä kokoelma esittelee ajankohtaista suomalaista tutkimusta seuraavista teemoista: tasa-arvo organisaatioissa, naisjohtajuus, yrittäjyyden sukupuoli, verkostot, sukupuolen representaatio sekä sukupuoli ja uusi teknologia. Kokoelma on työryhmän yhdessä koostama joten se on ennen kaikkea yhteistyön tulos. Recent research and literature on the gendering of organisations has been strongly influenced, though sometimes indirectly, by debates in and around feminism, and on recognising women and women’s situations, experiences and voices in organisations and management. The range of topics and issues that have been studied internationally is vast: gender relations in organizational and management groups, cultures and communication; gender divisions of labour; gender divisions of hierarchy, power, authority and leadership in organizations and management; gendered markets; gender imagery, symbols and advertising; gender and information technology; sexuality, harassment, bullying and violence in organisations; home-work relations; and so on. There are also key issues of gender power relations in academic organizations and management themselves, which need urgent attention. Though most of these areas have been researched to some extent, much remains to be done. This collection brings together current Finnish research on: Equality in Organisations, Women in Management, Gender and Entrepreneurship, Networks, Representation of Gender, Gender and ICTs. The book has been put together by an editorial team and is thus first and foremost a collective effort.

Strategisen johtamisen oppi on tunkeutunut nykyään lähes kaikenlaisiin organisaatioihin suuryrityksistä julkisorganisaatioihin ja kolmannelle sektorille. Siitä on muodostunut suosittu johtamiskäytäntö, jota pidetään yleisesti jopa välttämättömyytenä ja itsestään selvänä tapana johtaa ja tehdä päätöksiä. Tässä kirjassa tuodaan esille, miten strategiapuhe ei kuitenkaan ole mikään viaton tai neutraali tapa tuottaa todellisuuttamme; se pitää sisällään erilaisia valtarakennelmia ja vaihtoehdottomuutta. Tutkimus antaa myös mielenkiintoisen näkökulman erityisesti isossa kaupunkiorganisaatiossa tehtävään strategiatyöhön. Kirja tarjoaa näköaloja ja tutkimuksellisia avauksia erityisesti strategian retoriikkaan, keskustelukäytäntöihin, strategian kääntämisen ilmiöön, osallistumisen problematiikkaan sekä strategian ja maineenhallinnan yhteyteen.

The Lucianic text of the Septuagint of the Historical Books witnessed primarily by the manuscript group L (19, 82, 93, 108, and 127) consists of at least two strata: the recensional elements, which date back to about 300 C.E., and the substratum under these recensional elements, the proto-Lucianic text. Some distinctive readings in L seem to be supported by witnesses that antedate the supposed time of the recension. These witnesses include the biblical quotations of Josephus, Hippolytus, Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Cyprian, and the Old Latin translation of the Septuagint. It has also been posited that some Lucianic readings might go back to Hebrew readings that are not found in the Masoretic text but appear in the Qumran biblical texts. This phenomenon constitutes the proto-Lucianic problem. In chapter 1 the proto-Lucianic problem and its research history are introduced. Josephus references to 1 Samuel are analyzed in chapter 2. His agreements with L are few and are mostly only apparent or, at best, coincidental. In chapters 3 6 the quotations by four early Church Fathers are analyzed. Hippolytus Septuagint text is extremely hard to establish since his quotations from 1 Samuel have only been preserved in Armenian and Georgian translations. Most of the suggested agreements between Hippolytus and L are only apparent or coincidental. Irenaeus is the most trustworthy textual witness of the four early Church Fathers. His quotations from 1 Samuel agree with L several times against codex Vaticanus (B) and all or most of the other witnesses in preserving the original text. Tertullian and Cyprian agree with L in attesting some Hebraizing approximations that do not seem to be of Hexaplaric origin. The question is more likely of early Hebraizing readings of the same tradition as the kaige recension. In chapter 7 it is noted that Origen, although a pre-Lucianic Father, does not qualify as a proto-Lucianic witness. General observations about the Old Latin witnesses as well as an analysis of the manuscript La115 are given in chapter 8. In chapter 9 the theory of the proto-Lucianic recension is discussed. In order to demonstrate the existence of the proto-Lucianic recension one should find instances of indisputable agreement between the Qumran biblical manuscripts and L in readings that are secondary in Greek. No such case can be found in the Qumran material in 1 Samuel. In the text-historical conclusions (chapter 10) it is noted that of all the suggested proto-Lucianic agreements in 1 Samuel (about 75 plus 70 in La115) more than half are only apparent or, at best, coincidental. Of the indisputable agreements, however, 26 are agreements in the original reading. In about 20 instances the agreement is in a secondary reading. These agreements are early variants; mostly minor changes that happen all the time in the course of transmission. Four of the agreements, however, are in a pre-Hexaplaric Hebraizing approximation that has found its way independently into the pre-Lucianic witnesses and the Lucianic recension. The study aims at demonstrating the value of the Lucianic text as a textual witness: under the recensional layer(s) there is an ancient text that preserves very old, even original readings which have not been preserved in B and most of the other witnesses. The study also confirms the value of the early Church Fathers as textual witnesses.

This research will be aimed at five hold office fysical teachers´, three men and two women teacher, pedagogical thinking and how the realization of physical teaching will be determined the teacher`s action and thinking and how the pedagogy task will be carried out in the connection of teaching. The central goal of the research is the examining of pedagogical action climate from the point of view of the pupil and his own experience. The pedagogical climate is seen in the research as the matter of the motivating, communal and the mutual confidence. The research represents the hermeneutic approaching way, where with the help of interpretation of the study material is tried to get to understand the study target. I shall call my work the dialogic hermeneutic study. The study material includes the interview and observation material. During the examining material have been picked up the essential of the questions. By means of the contain analysis has been raised the essential connected closely to study questions. With the method of contain analysis it had been shaped the description of every teacher. After this it had been searched from the material the centered meanings, which were connected closely to the study job and their unities. To understand the connections between meanings were based on by means of the investigator´s own intuitive experience developed meaning understanding. The research strengthened the beginning understanding right. The physical teachers did not plan their teaching to think their education, but to think the pupils` activity. In the teachers` thinking and action pupils` situation was emphasized different. The other teachers` perspective was opened more from pupils, the othes` more from action. Pupils had more state to take part together and the teachers noticed the pupils` differences. The teachers descriped their own growth as teachers as interaction skills to develop. It seems that when teachers get more age and more experience they get prerequisities to look at their work more from pupils.

The aim of this study was to investigate educators relational moral voices in urban schools and to listen to what they told about moral professionalism and moral practices in challenging urban schools. Their relational moral voices were investigated through the following three questions: 1. What are the educators moral voices in relation to themselves and other people? 2. What are the educators moral voices in relation to their work and society? 3. What kind of interaction process lies between the educators moral voices and the urban school context? The research data of this study were gathered in four urban schools in Jyväskylä and Helsinki. The research schools were chosen for this study according to the criteria of the international Socrates Comenius project called Leading Schools Successfully in Challenging Urban Context: Strategies for Improvement. This study formed part of this project, which investigated successful urban schools as challenging learning environments in nine European countries and explored the principals success in leadership in particular. The data, which included 37 narratively constructed interviews with four principals and key informants selected by the principals, were gathered in interviews conducted in 2006. In other words, the data comprised three interviews with each of four principals, and interviews with two teachers, two parents, and two pupils from each school. In addition, the school deacon from one school was also interviewed. Furthermore, part of the data from one of the research schools included a medium report of the school deacon s work. This study combined the case study method, the narrative approach and the critical incident technique as the methodological framework. In addition, all of these methods served as practical tools for both analyzing and reporting the data. The educators' narrations and the results of the study appear in the original articles (Hanhimäki & Tirri 2008; Hanhimäki 2008b; Hanhimäki & Tirri 2009; Hanhimäki 2008a). The educators moral voices in relation to themselves and other people emerged through the main themes of moral leadership, the development and evaluation process, moral sensitivity, gender, values, and student well-being. The educators moral voices in relation to their work and society emerged through the main themes of multiprofessional cooperation, families and parental involvement, and moral school culture. The idea of moral interaction connected moral professionalism and the methodological combination of this study, which together emphasized social interaction and the creation of understanding and meaning in this interaction. The main point of this study was to state that the educators moral voices emerged in the interaction between the educators themselves and the urban school context. In this interaction, the educators moral professionalism was constructed and shaped in relation to themselves, other people, their work and society. The loudest relational moral voices heard through the main themes were those of caring, cooperation, respect, commitment, and professionalism. When the results were compared to the codes of ethics which guided these educators moral professional work, the ethical principles and values of the codes were clearly visible in their moral practices. The loudest message from the educators narration could be summarized in the words caring, respect and cooperation: at its best, there is just a human being and a human being with caring, respect and cooperation between them. The results of this study emphasize the need for practical approaches such as case studies and the narrative approach in teacher education to encourage educators to become moral professionals capable of meeting the needs of people of varied backgrounds. In addition, opportunities for moral, religious and spiritual education should be noticed and utilized in the plural interaction of urban schools when nurturing pupils and creating a moral school culture. Furthermore, multiprofessional cooperation and parents as the school s primary cooperation partner are needed to carry out the shared duty of moral education in urban schools. This study examines values education in Japanese schools at the beginning of the millennium. The topic was approached by asking the following three questions concerning the curricular background, the morality conveyed through textbooks and the characterization of moral education from a comparative viewpoint: 1) What role did moral education play in the curriculum revision which was initiated in 1998 and implemented in 2002? 2) What kinds of moral responsibilities and moral autonomy do the moral texts develop? 3) What does Japanese moral education look like in terms of the comparative framework? The research was based on curriculum research. Its primary empirical data consisted of the national curriculum guidelines for primary school, which were taken into use in 2002, and moral texts, Kokoro no nôto, published by the Ministry of Education in the same context. Since moral education was approached in the education reform context, the secondary research material involved some key documents of the revision process from the mid-1990s to 2003. The research material was collected during three fieldwork periods in Japan (in 2002, 2003 and 2005). The text-analysis was conducted as a theory-dependent qualitative content analysis. Japanese moral education was analyzed as a product of its own cultural tradition and societal answer to the current educational challenges. In order to understand better its character, secular moral education was reflected upon from a comparative viewpoint. The theory chosen for the comparative framework, the value realistic theory of education, represented the European rational education tradition as well as the Christian tradition of values education. Moral education, which was the most important school subject at the beginning of modern school, was eliminated from the curriculum for political reasons in a school reform after the Second World War, but has gradually regained a stronger position since then. It was reinforced particularly at the turn of millennium, when a curriculum revision attempted to respond to educational and learning problems by emphasizing qualitative and value aspects. Although the number of moral lessons and their status as a non-official-subject remained unchanged, the Ministry of Education made efforts to improve moral education by new curricular emphases, new teaching material and additional in-service training possibilities for teachers. The content of the moral texts was summarized in terms of moral responsibility in four moral areas (intrapersonal, interpersonal, natural-supranatural and societal) as follows: 1) continuous self-development, 2) caring for others, 3) awe of life and forces beyond human power, and 4) societal contribution. There was a social-societal and emotional emphasis in what was taught. Moral autonomy, which was studied from the perspectives of rational, affective and individuality development, stressed independence in action through self-discipline and responsibility more than rational self-direction. Japanese moral education can be characterized as the education of kokoro (heart) and the development of character, which arises from virtue ethics. It aims to overcome egoistic individualism by reciprocal and interdependent moral responsibility based on responsible interconnectedness.

The research analyzes product quality from a customer perspective in the case of the wood products industry. Of specific interest is to understand better how environmental quality is perceived from a customer perspective. The empirical material used comprises four data-sets from Finland, Germany and the UK, collected during 1992 2004. The methods consist of a set of quantitative statistical analyses. The results indicate that perceived quality from a customer perspective can be presented using a multidimensional and hierarchical construct with tangible and intangible dimensions, that is common to different markets and products. This applies in the case of wood products but also more generally at least for some other construction materials. For wood products, tangible product quality has two main sub-dimensions: technical quality and appearance. For product intangibles, a few main quality dimensions seem be detectable: Quality of intangibles related to the physical product, such as environmental issues and product-related information, supplier-related characteristics, and service and sales personnel behavior. Environmental quality and information are often perceived as being inter-related. Technical performance and appearance are the most important considerations for customers in the case of wood products. Organizational customers in particular also clearly consider certain intangible quality dimensions to be important, such as service and supplier reliability. The high technical quality may be considered as a license to operate , but product appearance and intangible quality provide potential for differentiation for attracting certain market segments. Intangible quality issues are those where Nordic suppliers underperform in comparison to their Central-European competitors on the important German markets. Environmental quality may not have been used to its full extent to attract customers. One possibility is to increase the availability of the environment-related information, or to develop environment-related product characteristics to also provide some individual benefits. Information technology provides clear potential to facilitate information-based quality improvements, which was clearly recognized by Finnish forest industry already in the early 1990s. The results indeed indicate that wood products markets are segmented with regard to quality demands

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää suomalaisten viininkuluttajien luomuviinien valintaa sekä niihin liitettyjä mielikuvia. Erityisen kiinnostuneita oltiin luomuviinien koetusta laadusta sekä siitä, mitkä mielikuvat ja motiivit edistävät ja mitkä estävät luomuviinien valintaa. Teoriaosassa tarkasteltiin viinimarkkinoita kansainvälisellä sekä kansallisella tasolla, viinintuotannon vaikutuksia ympäristöön sekä ympäristöystävällisyyden merkitsemistä. Ympäristöystävällisiin viineihin luettiin tässä tutkimuksessa luomuviinit, biodynaamiset viinit ja viinit, joiden tuotannossa noudatetaan kestävän kehityksen periaatteita. Päähuomio tutkimuksessa oli Alkon luomuhyllyntunnuksilla merkityissä luonnonmukaisista rypäleistä viljellyillä viineillä, joita arkikielessä kutsutaan luomuviineiksi. Tutkimus suoritettiin kvantitatiivisiin tutkimusmenetelmiin kuuluvalla kyselylomakkeella. Teoriaosion kirjallisuus antoi viitekehyksen, jonka pohjalta empiirinen tutkimus toteutettiin. Aineisto kerättiin pääkaupunkiseudulla kolmessa eri Alkon myymälässä, ja aineisto koostuu 145 viiniä kuluttavasta vastaajasta. Tutkimuksen tulosten mukaan luomuviiniä suositaan valinnoissa, mutta valintaan tai hylkäämiseen johtavat mielikuvat eivät ole yksiselitteisiä. Valintaan johtavia motiiveja ja mielikuvia oli helpompi löytää kuin hylkäämiseen johtavia. Kokeilunhalu / mielenkiinto, ympäristönäkökulmat sekä puhtauteen ja terveyteen liittyvät mielikuvat olivat motiiveja, jotka tässä tutkimuksessa edistivät eniten luomuviinien valintaa. Luomuviinien laatu ja hinnat koettiin tasavertaiseksi suhteessa tavanomaisin viineihin. Luomuviinien laatu liittyi erityisesti luonnollisuuteen ja puhtauteen. Markkinoinnin ja viestinnän keinoin on mahdollista lisätä kuluttajien tietämystä luomuviineistä, ja siten vaikuttaa niihin liitettyihin mielikuviin.

Acute childhood osteomyelitis (OM), septic arthritis (SA), and their combination osteomyelitis with adjacent septic arthritis (OM+SA), are treated with long courses of antimicrobials and immediate surgery. We conducted a prospective multi-center randomized trial among Finnish children at age 3 months to 15 years in 1983-2005. According to the two-by-two factorial study design, children with OM or OM+SA received 20 or 30 days of antimicrobials, whereas those with SA were treated for 10 or 30 days. In addition, the whole series was randomized to be treated with clindamycin or a first-generation cephalosporin. Cases were included only if the causative agent was isolated. The treatment was instituted intravenously, but only for the first 2-4 days. Percutaneous aspiration was done to obtain a representative sample for bacteriology, but all other surgical intervention was kept at a minimum. A total of 265 patients fulfilled our strict inclusion criteria and were analyzed; 106 children had OM, 134 SA, and 25 OM+SA. In the OM group, one child in the long and one child in the short-term treatment group developed sequelae. One child with SA twice developed a late re-infection of the same joint, but the causative agents differed. Regarding surgery, diagnostic arthrocentesis or corticotomy was the only surgical procedure performed in most cases. Routine arthrotomy was not required even in hip arthritis. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) proved to be a reliable laboratory index in the diagnosis and monitoring of osteoarticular infections. The recovery rate was similar regardless of whether clindamycin or a first-generation cephalosporin was used. We conclude that a course of 20 days of these well-absorbing antimicrobials is sufficient for OM or OM+SA, and 10 days for SA in most cases beyond the neonatal age. A short intravenous phase of only 2-5 days often suffices. CRP gives valuable information in monitoring the course of illness. Besides diagnostic aspiration, surgery should be reserved for selected cases.

The present study focuses on the question of agency in the narratives of women who have experienced an abortion. The study scrutinizes agency by analyzing narratives and their context, that is, how narratives are entwined with cultural discourses and societal practices. The study thus addresses also the wider framework within which experiences and actions can be constructed in abortion narratives in the contemporary Finnish society. The women who wrote their stories or were interviewed were of different ages and had different social and religious backgrounds. Many variations of agency were found when abortion experiences were analyzed through the women s embodied and historically specific accounts. Independent and rational choices are entwined with emotions and choices made together with other people. Intimate relationships with family and friends have an important role in the choices regarding abortion. These relationships do not, however, simply belong in the private sphere but reflect the wider socio-cultural meanings of social bonds and family ties. Women s agency with regard to abortion is also constructed in encounters with the medical profession and within the wider framework of abortion legislation. The Finnish legislation grants women an abortion within certain parameters but not solely on the basis of a woman s wish to have an abortion. The data consists primarily of written narratives and interviews. All together 39 women shared their experiences with the researcher. The analysis focuses on decision-making regarding abortion, depictions of freedom and responsibility, emotions around abortion and expressions of values and religious views. The links between the women's experiences and the wider socio-cultural norms and institutions are analyzed through materials consisting of public debate on abortion in the media, ethical statements as well as literature and legislation on abortion. The analysis sheds light on the tensions apparent in the women's narratives between the legal status of abortion and more traditional views on abortion. The study demonstrates that the freedom linked to abortion is not solely to do with the right to have an abortion but also how abortion can be experienced, understood and where one can talk about the experience afterwards. The analysis reveals that Christian values shape women's experiences but that there are also new religious ways to deal with the ethical considerations brought about by abortion. Annually over 10 000 Finnish women experience an abortion, which is a situation involving ethical considerations. The study provides a nuanced account of the ways in which one can think and act when going through an abortion.

In this thesis, I study the changing ladscape and human environment of the Mätäjoki Valley, West-Helsinki, using reconstructions and predictive modelling. The study is a part of a larger project funded by the city of Helsinki aming to map the past of the Mätäjoki Valley. The changes in landscape from an archipelago in the Ancylus Lake to a river valley are studied from 10000 to 2000 years ago. Alongside shore displacement, we look at the changing environment from human perspective and predict the location of dwelling sitesat various times. As a result, two map series were produced that show how the landscape changed and where inhabitance is predicted. To back them up, we have also looked at what previous research says about the history of the waterways, climate, vegetation and archaeology. The changing landscape of the river valley is reconstructed using GIS methods. For this purpose, new laser point data set was used and at the same time tested in the context landscape modelling. Dwelling sites were modeled with logistic regression analysis. The spatial predictive model combines data on the locations of the known dwelling sites, environmental factors and shore displacement data. The predictions were visualised into raster maps that show the predictions for inhabitance 3000 and 5000 years ago. The aim of these maps was to help archaeologists map potential spots for human activity. The produced landscape reconstructions clarified previous shore displacement studies of the Mätäjoki region and provided new information on the location of shoreline. From the shore displacement history of the Mätäjoki Valley arise the following stages: 1. The northernmost hills of the Mätäjoki Valley rose from Ancylus Lake approximately 10000 years ago. Shore displacement was fast during the following thousand years. 2. The area was an archipelago with a relatively steady shoreline 9000 7000 years ago. 8000 years ago the shoreline drew back in the middle and southern parts of the river valley because of the transgression of the Litorina Sea. 3. Mätäjoki was a sheltered bay of the Litorina Sea 6000 5000 years ago. The Vantaanjoki River started to flow into the Mätäjoki Valley approximately 5000 years ago. 4. The sediment plains in the southern part of the river valley rose from the sea rather quickly 5000 3000 years ago. Salt water still pushed its way into the southermost part of the valley 4000 years ago. 5. The shoreline proceeded to Pitäjänmäki rapids where it stayed at least a thousand years 3000 2000 years ago. The predictive models managed to predict the locations of dwelling sites moderately well. The most accurate predictions were found on the eastern shore and Malminkartano area. Of the environment variables sand and aspect of slope were found to have the best predictive power. From the results of this study we can conclude that the Mätäjoki Valley has been a favorable location to live especially 6000 5000 years ago when the climate was mild and vegetation lush. The laser point data set used here works best in shore displacement studies located in rural areas or if further specific palaeogeographic or hydrologic analysis in the research area is not needed.

Moraalipsykologit ovat väitelleet vuosikymmeniä siitä, mitä moraali on ja minkälaisiin psykologisiin prosesseihin moraaliarvioinnit perustuvat. Yksi keskeinen kysymys on koskenut sitä vaikuttavatko ihmisten maailmankuvat ja niihin kietoutuvat tiedolliset uskomukset, arvot ja omat käsitykset moraalin luonteesta moraaliarviointeihin. Tämä tutkimus lähti selvittämään maailmankuvan uskonnollisuuden sekä arvojen yhteyttä moraaliarviointeihin tilastollisten analyysien valossa. Kyselytutkimusaineisto kerättiin helsinkiläisiltä yliopisto-opiskelijoilta (N = 161). Nykypäivän ihmisille tuttujen, mutta moraalisesti kiistanalaisten tekojen vääryyden arvioinneista muodostettiin pääkomponenttianalyysiin perustuen kolme tekotyyppiä, jotka nimettiin itseen kohdistuviksi teoiksi (ITSE-teot; abortti, avioero, eutanasia, seksin harrastaminen alaikäisenä ja itsemurha), muihin yksilöihin kohdistuviksi antisosiaalisiksi teoiksi (MYKS-teot; varastetun tavaran ostaminen tietoisesti, pysäköidylle autolle vahingossa aiheuttamansa vahingon ilmoittamatta jättäminen ja toiselle henkilölle kuuluvan auton luvaton käyttöönotto) sekä yhteiskuntaan kohdistuviksi antisosiaalisiksi teoiksi (YHT-teot; maksamatta jättäminen julkisessa liikenteessä ja verovilppi tilaisuuden salliessa). Maailmankuvaltaan perinteisesti uskonnolliset henkilöt arvioivat kaikki tekotyypit lähes yhtä vääriksi (sanallisesti ”väärin” oleviksi) sekä keskimäärin vääremmiksi kuin maailmankuvaltaan ei-perinteisesti uskonnolliset henkilöt. Sen sijaan ei-perinteisesti uskonnolliset henkilöt erottivat selkeästi kaikki kolme tekotyyppiä niin keskiarvojen kuin niiden sanallisten vastineidensakin mukaan (väärimmiksi arviointiin MYKS-teot ja vähiten vääriksi ITSE-teot). Hierarkkisissa regressioanalyyseissä maailmankuvan uskonnollisuuden perinteisyys ennusti merkittävästi ITSE-tekojen vääremmäksi arviointia, mutta kohtalaisesti myös YHT-tekojen vääremmäksi arviointia, kun ikä, sukupuoli ja arvoulottuvuudet oli vakioitu. Uskonnollisuuden perinteisyys ei kuitenkaan ennustanut MYKS-tekojen arviointia muut tekijät vakioituina ja sen ainoaksi tilastollisesti merkitseväksi selittäjäksi osoittautui säilyttämis−muutosvalmiusarvoulottuvuus, joskin melko vähäisellä selitysvoimalla. Kyseinen arvoulottuvuus ennusti myös ITSE- ja YHT-tekotyyppien arviointeja muut edellä mainitut tekijät vakioituina, mutta heikommin kuin maailmankuvan uskonnollisuuden perinteisyys. YHT-tekoja selitti lisäksi ikä, kun kaikki muut selittäjät oli vakioitu. Itsensäylittämis–itsensäkorostamisarvoulottuvuus ei ollut yhteydessä yhdenkään tekotyypin vääryyden arviointiin. Tulokset tukivat aiempia tutkimustuloksia siitä, että eri ihmiset hahmottavat ainakin omasta näkökulmastaan moraalin alaa eri tavoin eli arvioivat samat teot eri tavoin vääriksi tai vapaaehtoisiksi. Tulokset osoittivat myös, että ihmisten maailmankuvan uskonnollisuudella ja säilyttämisarvojen preferoinnilla on selkeä yhteys näihin eroihin arvioinneissa, mutta että muihin yksilöihin kohdistuvat vahingolliset ja epäoikeudenmukaiset antisosiaaliset teot tuomitaan hyvin yleisesti väärinä. Yhdessä nämä tekijät näyttäisivät viittaavan siihen, että ihmisten moraalikäsitykset todella vaihtelevat. Keskeisinä lähteinä toimivat Jonathan Haidtin, Lawrence Kohlbergin, Shalom Schwartzin, Richard Shwederin sekä Elliot Turielin tieteelliset julkaisut ja teokset.

Hyvinkääläiset työläisnaiset ottivat vuoden 1918 sisällissotaan osaa punakaartin riveissä ruoanlaittajina, sairaanhoitajina sekä asetta kantaneina sotilaina. Valkokaartia tukemaan saapuneet saksalaissotilaat saavuttivat Hyvinkään huhtikuun 20. päivä, ja pitäjä valloitettiin. Osa hyvinkääläisnaisista oli tässä vaiheessa siirtynyt jo pohjoisemmille rintamille. Valkoiset etenivät kuitenkin voittoisasti kohti pohjoista, ja suurin osa hyvinkääläisnaisista oli antautunut 1. toukokuuta mennessä. Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee Hyvinkään punakaartilaisnaisiin kohdistuneita kuulustelututkimuksia ja toimenpiteitä sisällissodan jälkiselvittelyissä, jotka alkoivat huhtikuussa ja jatkuivat vuoden loppuun saakka. Samalla tuon esiin runsaasti uutta tietoa Hyvinkään punakaartilaisnaisten toimista sisällissodassa sekä heidän taustoistaan. Tärkeimpiä lähteitä tutkimuksessani ovat erilaiset Kansallisarkistossa säilytettävät oikeusasiakirjat: Hyvinkään pitäjän kenttäoikeuksien pöytäkirjat, viralliset esitutkintapöytäkirjat sekä valtiorikosoikeuksien ja valtiorikosylioikeuden aktit. Lisäksi olen etsinyt tietoa sodassa ja sen jälkiselvittelyissä surmansa saaneista punaisista hyvinkääläisnaisista. Tässä tärkeimpinä lähteinäni ovat olleet Suomen Sotasurmat 1914–1922 -projektin nimitiedosto sekä valkokaartin kirjanpidosta löytyneet vangitsemistiedot. Olen hyödyntänyt suuren tietomäärän käsittelyssä tilastollisia menetelmiä. Tarkastelen naisia kuitenkin paljon myös yksilötasolla, sillä juuri yksilötarinat rikastuttavat paikallishistoriallista tutkimusta. Tutkimukseni perusteella punaisiksi luokiteltuja hyvinkääläisnaisia menehtyi sisällissodan jälkiselvittelyissä 27 – heistä suurin osa Lahden ja Hämeenlinnan seudulla, missä viimeiset taistelut käytiin. Menehtyneistä naisista moni oli vasta 16–17-vuotias. Myös hyvinkääläisnaisia joutui suurille vankileireille – tässä yhteydessä tarkastelen kahden naisen vankileirimuistelmia. Kotipaikkakunnalla tutkittiin samanaikaisesti kenttäoikeuksissa 64 hyvinkääläisnaista. Kenttäoikeuksien tehtävänä oli kartoittaa punakaartilaisten toimintaa sekä heidän tietojansa paikkakunnalla ja lähiseuduilla tapahtuneista murhista sekä ryöstöistä. Kenttäoikeuksissa kuulustelluista naisista valtaosa vapautettiin lyhyen vankeuden jälkeen. Jälkiselvittelyjen virallisessa vaiheessa 116 hyvinkääläistä punakaartilaisnaista joutui kuulusteluihin. Heistä vajaa puolet oli toiminut sodan aikana erilaisissa huoltotehtävissä mm. punakaartin ruokalassa. 25 naista oli epäiltynä Hyvinkäällä huhtikuussa perustetussa aseellisessa naiskaartissa toimimisesta. Loput olivat toimineet punaisten hallinnossa tai sairaanhoitotehtävissä kotipaikkakunnalla ja rintamilla. Kuulustelujen perusteella 81 naista sai vuoden 1918 jälkipuoliskolla syytteen valtiorikosoikeudessa; heistä suurin osa avunannosta valtiopetokseen. Tutkimukseni kattaa näin kaikkiaan noin 150 hyvinkääläistä punakaartilaisnaista. Tutkimukseni valottaa heidän toimintaansa sodan aikana sekä arvioi rankaisutoimenpiteiden motiiveja. Tutkimukseni mukaan asetta kantaneisiin naisiin suhtauduttiin jälkiselvittelyissä keskimäärin hyvin ankarasti. Muiden punakaartilaisnaisten osalta rankaisutoimenpiteissä ei ollut yhtenäistä linjaa. Perunankuorinta punakaartin ruokalassa saattoi olla tuomittava rikos siinä missä kaartilaisten matkoilla liikkuminen ja ryöstetyn tavaran kätkeminen.
