Yrityksen organisaatiomallin pitää palvella tehokasta toimintaa. Tällä hetkellä tässä yrityksessä resurssipooleihin perustuva organisaatio on katsottu sopivaksi. Sen toivotaan mahdollistavan henkilöstöresurssien tehokas hyödyntäminen. Organisaation muutos vaatii myös toimintatapojen ja joissain tapauksissa tietojärjestelmien muutosta. Tässä tapauksessa siirtyminen uudenlaiseen organisaatioon loi tarpeen uudelle resurssien varaus- ja etsintätoiminnolle ja sitä tukeville tietovarastoille. Vaatimusmäärityksen tuloksena voidaan todeta, että nykyinen ERP-ohjelmisto ei ole paras mahdollinen yrityksen käyttöön, vaikka senkin kanssa yritys kyllä tulee toimeen. Tärkeimpinä vaatimuksina hyvälle hallintasovellukselle voidaan pitää mahdollisuutta seurata työntekijöiden osaamisen ja tietämyksen kehitystä sekä arvioida niiden tasoa, mahdollisuutta varata niin henkilöitä kuin osaamisia ja tehokasta ja muunneltavaa mekanismia henkilöiden valintaan projekteihin. Nykyisessä toteutuksessa henkilöstön osaamisten käsittely on hiukan rajoittunutta eikä mitään historiatietoja tallenneta tai käytetä hyödyksi missään vaiheessa. Myös resurssien haku projekteihin olisi mahdollista toteuttaa paremmin. Hakuihin pitäisi saada lisää hakuehtoja ja mahdollistaa yleisluontoisemmat ehdot yksityiskohtien sijaan, vaikka tiedot olisivatkin tarkemmalla tasolla. Näistä syistä uuden työkalun rakentamista henkilöstöresurssien paremman hyödyntämisen takaamiseksi voidaan pitää perusteltuna.

Fluent health information flow is critical for clinical decision-making. However, a considerable part of this information is free-form text and inabilities to utilize it create risks to patient safety and cost-effective hospital administration. Methods for automated processing of clinical text are emerging. The aim in this doctoral dissertation is to study machine learning and clinical text in order to support health information flow.First, by analyzing the content of authentic patient records, the aim is to specify clinical needs in order to guide the development of machine learning applications.The contributions are a model of the ideal information flow,a model of the problems and challenges in reality, and a road map for the technology development. Second, by developing applications for practical cases,the aim is to concretize ways to support health information flow. Altogether five machine learning applications for three practical cases are described: The first two applications are binary classification and regression related to the practical case of topic labeling and relevance ranking.The third and fourth application are supervised and unsupervised multi-class classification for the practical case of topic segmentation and labeling.These four applications are tested with Finnish intensive care patient records.The fifth application is multi-label classification for the practical task of diagnosis coding. It is tested with English radiology reports.The performance of all these applications is promising. Third, the aim is to study how the quality of machine learning applications can be reliably evaluated.The associations between performance evaluation measures and methods are addressed,and a new hold-out method is introduced.This method contributes not only to processing time but also to the evaluation diversity and quality. The main conclusion is that developing machine learning applications for text requires interdisciplinary, international collaboration. Practical cases are very different, and hence the development must begin from genuine user needs and domain expertise. The technological expertise must cover linguistics,machine learning, and information systems. Finally, the methods must be evaluated both statistically and through authentic user-feedback.

The aim of this thesis was to analyze the background information of an activity-based costing system, which is being used in a domestic forest industry company. The reports produced by the system have not been reliable, and this has caused the utilization of the system to diminish. The study was initiated by examining the theory of activity-based costing. It was also discovered, that the system produces management accounting information and therefore also that theory was introduced briefly. Next the possible sources of errors were examined. The significance of these errors was evaluated and waste handling was chosen as a subject of further study. The problem regarding waste handling was that there is no waste compensation in current model. When paper or board machine produces waste, it can be used as raw material in the process. However, at the moment the product, which is being produced, at the time does not get any compensation. The use of compensation has not been possible due to not knowing the quantity of process waste. As a result of the study a calculatory model, which enables calculating the quantity of process waste based on the data from the mill system, was introduced. This, for one, enables starting to use waste compensation in the future.

Tässä työssä perehdytaan erilaisiin tapoihin mallintaa radioverkon kuuluvuutta verkon suunnittelua ja erilaisia palveluja varten. Tämän tarkastelun perusteella muodostetaan ongelmaan NURBS-pintaan perustuva ratkaisu, jolla radioverkon kuuluvuutta voidaan tarkastella kolmiulotteisesti. Radioverkon kuuluvuutta mallinnettaessa työssä kehitetty malli ottaa syötteenään tietoja rakennuksesta ja mitattuja signaalivoimakkuuksia ja luo näiden perusteella kolmiulotteisen pinnan, jonka avulla pystytään tarkastelemaan kuuluvuusaluetta. Kehitetyn mallin perusteella työssä toteutettiin radioverkon kuuluvuutta mallintava sovellus, joka pystyy tarjoamaan tietoa signaalin voimakkuudesta myös muiden sovellusten tarpeisiin.

In the construction industry, the role of project management and monitoring is emphasized, because the responsibilities have been carefully planned and divided. A concrete element factory manufactures the units based on construction drawings, while a transport company is responsible of transporting the elements to the worksite. At the worksite, an installation team assembles the elements according to plans. Usually, there are several manufacturers and transport companies involved in the construction process and the distances between different parties can be rather long. Therefore, the role of information exchange is critical in order to control, for example, schedules and exceptions. From the viewpoint of project management, the whole process should be controlled and monitored in realtime - in such a way that the managers are able to analyze and report the data afterwards. In this master’s thesis, a mobile-aided construction project monitoring system is designed and implemented. The monitoring system consists of three main components: mobile phone application, server software and an interface application to Tekla Structures BIM-software. Precast construction components, projects and users are identified by using 2D-barcodes that are read with the camera of a mobile phone. An option would be to use RFID tags and readers. After successful identification, the precast component can be tagged with monitoring data, including state acknowledgments and error reports that are sent and saved to the server. Collected data can be viewed through the www-pages of the monitoring system. In addition, the data can be synchronized to the Tekla Structures-software that is running the 3D-model of the whole building. Synchronization maintains and enhances the traceability of monitoring data, as well as, helps to visualize the progression of the project.

The aim of the study was to create an easily upgradable product costing model for laser welded hollow core steel panels to help in pricing decisions. The theory section includes a literature review to identify traditional and modern cost accounting methodologies, which are used by manufacturing companies. The theory section also presents the basics of steel panel structures and their manufacturing methods and manufacturing costs based on previous research. Activity-Based costing turned out to be the most appropriate methodology for the costing model because of wide product variations. Activity analysis and the determination of cost drivers based on observations and interviews were the key steps in the creation of the model. The created model was used to test how panel parameters affect the costs caused by the main manufacturing stages and materials. By comparing cost structures, it was possible to find the panel types that are the most economic and uneconomic to manufacture. A sensitivity analysis proved that the model gives sufficiently reliable cost information to support pricing decisions. More reliable cost information could be achieved by determining the cost drivers more accurately. Alternative methods for manufacturing the cores were compared with the model. The comparison proved that roll forming can be more advantageous and flexible than press brake bending. However, more extensive research showed that roll forming is possible only when the cores are designed to be manufactured by roll forming. Due to that fact, when new panels are designed consideration should be given to the possibility of using roll forming.

The increasing power demand and emerging applications drive the design of electrical power converters into modularization. Despite the wide use of modularized power stage structures, the control schemes that are used are often traditional, in other words, centralized. The flexibility and re-usability of these controllers are typically poor. With a dedicated distributed control scheme, the flexibility and re-usability of the system parts, building blocks, can be increased. Only a few distributed control schemes have been introduced for this purpose, but their breakthrough has not yet taken place. A demand for the further development offlexible control schemes for building-block-based applications clearly exists. The control topology, communication, synchronization, and functionality allocationaspects of building-block-based converters are studied in this doctoral thesis. A distributed control scheme that can be easily adapted to building-block-based power converter designs is developed. The example applications are a parallel and series connection of building blocks. The building block that is used in the implementations of both the applications is a commercial off-the-shelf two-level three-phase frequency converter with a custom-designed controller card. The major challenge with the parallel connection of power stages is the synchronization of the building blocks. The effect of synchronization accuracy on the system performance is studied. The functionality allocation and control scheme design are challenging in the seriesconnected multilevel converters, mainly because of the large number of modules. Various multilevel modulation schemes are analyzed with respect to the implementation, and this information is used to develop a flexible control scheme for modular multilevel inverters.

The purpose of this study is to view credit risk from the financier’s point of view in a theoretical framework. Results and aspects of the previous studies regarding measuring credit risk with accounting based scoring models are also examined. The theoretical framework and previous studies are then used to support the empirical analysis which aims to develop a credit risk measure for a bank’s internal use or a risk management tool for a company to indicate its credit risk to the financier. The study covers a sample of Finnish companies from 12 different industries and four different company categories and employs their accounting information from 2004 to 2008. The empirical analysis consists of six stage methodology process which uses measures of profitability, liquidity, capital structure and cash flow to determine financier’s credit risk, define five significant risk classes and produce risk classification model. Tämä opinnäytetyö on tehty yhteistyössä Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston ja Enviroc Oy:n kanssa. Työn tarkoituksena on ollut kehittää suomalaisiin olosuhteisiin soveltuva laskentamalli purku- ja korjausrakentamiskohteiden hiilijalanjäljelle. Kehitettyä mallia voi käyttää yrityksessä lainsäädännön vaatimusten noudattamisen todentamiseen sekä purku- ja korjausrakentamiskohteiden toimintatapojen vertailuun. Työssä käsitellään purku- ja korjausrakentamiskohteiden hiilijalanjälkeen vaikuttavia asioita, joita ovat työmaan energiankulutus sekä syntyvien jätteiden lajittelu, kuljetukset, käsittely ja hyödyntäminen tai loppusijoitus. Laskentamalli on kehitetty laskemalla esimerkkikohteille hiilijalanjäljet elinkaarimallintamisen avulla. Työssä on tarkasteltu myös vaihtoehtoisia jäteskenaarioita sekä laskentamallin luotettavuutta. Työn lopputuloksena on saatu kolmen eri kokoluokan esimerkkikohteen hiilijalanjäljet ja laskentamallin periaatekaaviot. Jätteiden toimituspisteiden ja jätejakeiden kulkureittien vaihtelevuuden sekä eri kohteista muodostuvien erityyppisten jätejakeiden johdosta yhden kokonaisvaltaisen laskentamallin kehittäminen on haasteellista. Myös tietojen hankinta kohteista ja jatkokäsittelyistä ja etenkin primääritietojen saaminen on ongelmallista. Tämänhetkinen laskentamalli perustuu enimmäkseen sekundääritietoihin ja arvioihin, joten mallin luotettavuuden lisäämiseksi olisi panostettava primääritiedon määrän lisäämiseen. Laskennan perusteella jäteskenaariovaihtoehdoista lajitteleva toimintamalli osoittautui hiilijalanjäljen kannalta suotuisimmaksi pienemmissä kohteissa ja käsittelylaitospainotteinen malli suuressa kohteessa. Merkittäviä tekijöitä kohteiden hiilijalanjälkien muodostumiselle olivat metallien käsittely, jätteiden poltto sekä neitsytraaka-aineista valmistetun teräksen ja fossiilisten polttoaineiden vältetyt päästöt. Merkittävimmiksi kasvihuonekaasuiksi purku- ja korjausrakentamiskohteiden laskennassa osoittautuivat hiilidioksidin lisäksi halogenoidut hiilivedyt ja metaani.

In this work a fuzzy linear system is used to solve Leontief input-output model with fuzzy entries. For solving this model, we assume that the consumption matrix from di erent sectors of the economy and demand are known. These assumptions heavily depend on the information obtained from the industries. Hence uncertainties are involved in this information. The aim of this work is to model these uncertainties and to address them by fuzzy entries such as fuzzy numbers and LR-type fuzzy numbers (triangular and trapezoidal). Fuzzy linear system has been developed using fuzzy data and it is solved using Gauss-Seidel algorithm. Numerical examples show the e ciency of this algorithm. The famous example from Prof. Leontief, where he solved the production levels for U.S. economy in 1958, is also further analyzed.

Novel biomaterials are needed to fill the demand of tailored bone substitutes required by an ever‐expanding array of surgical procedures and techniques. Wood, a natural fiber composite, modified with heat treatment to alter its composition, may provide a novel approach to the further development of hierarchically structured biomaterials. The suitability of wood as a model biomaterial as well as the effects of heat treatment on the osteoconductivity of wood was studied by placing untreated and heat‐treated (at 220 C , 200 degrees and 140 degrees for 2 h) birch implants (size 4 x 7mm) into drill cavities in the distal femur of rabbits. The follow‐up period was 4, 8 and 20 weeks in all in vivo experiments. The flexural properties of wood as well as dimensional changes and hydroxyl apatite formation on the surface of wood (untreated, 140 degrees C and 200 degrees C heat‐treated wood) were tested using 3‐point bending and compression tests and immersion in simulated body fluid. The effect of premeasurement grinding and the effect of heat treatment on the surface roughness and contour of wood were tested with contact stylus and non‐contact profilometry. The effects of heat treatment of wood on its interactions with biological fluids was assessed using two different test media and real human blood in liquid penetration tests. The results of the in vivo experiments showed implanted wood to be well tolerated, with no implants rejected due to foreign body reactions. Heat treatment had significant effects on the biocompatibility of wood, allowing host bone to grow into tight contact with the implant, with occasional bone ingrowth into the channels of the wood implant. The results of the liquid immersion experiments showed hydroxyl apatite formation only in the most extensively heat‐treated wood specimens, which supported the results of the in vivo experiments. Parallel conclusions could be drawn based on the results of the liquid penetration test where human blood had the most favorable interaction with the most extensively heat‐treated wood of the compared materials (untreated, 140 degrees C and 200 degrees C heat‐treated wood). The increasing biocompatibility was inferred to result mainly from changes in the chemical composition of wood induced by the heat treatment, namely the altered arrangement and concentrations of functional chemical groups. However, the influence of microscopic changes in the cell walls, surface roughness and contour cannot be totally excluded. The heat treatment was hypothesized to produce a functional change in the liquid distribution within wood, which could have biological relevance. It was concluded that the highly evolved hierarchical anatomy of wood could yield information for the future development of bulk bone substitutes according to the ideology of bioinspiration. Furthermore, the results of the biomechanical tests established that heat treatment alters various biologically relevant mechanical properties of wood, thus expanding the possibilities of wood as a model material, which could include e.g. scaffold applications, bulk bone applications and serving as a tool for both mechanical testing and for further development of synthetic fiber reinforced composites.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää sähköisten tavaran toimitusasiakirjojen käytön vaikutukset hankinta- ja logistiikkapalveluita tarjoavan yrityksen toimitusketjun loppupään toimintoihin. Lisäksi työssä rakennetaan konstruktiivisen tutkimusmenetelmän viitekehyksen mukainen toimintamalli yrityksen käyttöä varten. Toimintamallin avulla tarkastellaan kohdeyrityksen mahdollisuutta parantaa toimitusketjun läpinäkyvyyttä, tehostaa sidosryhmien välistä tiedonsiirtoa ja vähentää virheitä ja manuaalista työtä nykyisissä prosesseissa. Työn keskeisin sisältö rakentuu kohdeyrityksen käyttämille kuljetusyrityksille tehdyn kuljetusliikekyselyn, tarkkaan kuvatun nykytilan sekä käytännön ongelmaan rakennetun konstruktion ympärille. Kuljetusliikekyselyn avulla saadaan käyttökelpoinen kuva kuljetusyritysten nykytilasta sekä tulevaisuuden suunnitelmista sähköisiin tavaran toimitusasiakirjoihin liittyen. Nykytilan kuvauksella nostetaan esiin prosesseja ja toimintoja joiden toimintaan voidaan oleellisesti vaikuttaa informaatioteknologian sekä prosessimuutosten avulla. Konstruktion rakentamisessa pääpaino on suunnattu läpinäkyvän ja tehokkaan toimitusketjun aikaansaamisessa. Tutkielman konstruktiota, sähköisten tavaran toimitusasiakirjojen toimintamallia, tarkastellaan yrityksen liiketoiminnan näkökulmasta peilaamalla oletettuja parannuksia aikaisempaan teoriapohjaan. Lisäksi toimintamallin soveltumista reaalimaailman ongelman ratkaisuun arvioidaan diplomityön ohjausryhmästä koostuvan johtajapaneelin tekemällä SWOT-analyysillä sekä heikolla markkinatestillä. ABSTRACT Geographic Information System (GIS) is an indispensable software tool in forest planning. In forestry transportation, GIS can manage the data on the road network and solve some problems in transportation, such as route planning. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the pattern of the road network and define transport routes using GIS technology. The present research was conducted in a forestry company in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The criteria used to classify the pattern of forest roads were horizontal and vertical geometry, and pavement type. In order to determine transport routes, a data Analysis Model Network was created in ArcGIS using an Extension Network Analyst, allowing finding a route shorter in distance and faster. The results showed a predominance of horizontal geometry classes average (3) and bad (4), indicating presence of winding roads. In the case of vertical geometry criterion, the class of highly mountainous relief (4) possessed the greatest extent of roads. Regarding the type of pavement, the occurrence of secondary coating was higher (75%), followed by primary coating (20%) and asphalt pavement (5%). The best route was the one that allowed the transport vehicle travel in a higher specific speed as a function of road pattern found in the study.
