The study found that Native English Speaking Teachers (NESTs) helped Taiwanese English teachers define their weaknesses, strengths, roles and values through relationality. NESTs brought competing discourses to the profession. In addition, team teaching has become a site of tension threatening Taiwanese English teachers in activating their professional agency.

The thesis disturbs the seeming secure foundations of the dominant realist tales about the imperatives for the development of Health Impact Assessment, a relatively new policy device used within governments to consider the effects of policies on health. Foucauldian genealogical approaches are used to provide alternative, non-linear and non-definitive accounts.

Community attitudes toward urban possums in Victoria were examined. 500 questionnaires were sent to a random sample of residents from metropolitan Melbourne (n=103) as well as people who had had experiences with possums (n=340). Negative attitudes toward possums were found to exist in the community and these attitudes were not restricted to those who have had problems with possums. However, the extent of possum problems may be less than commonly believed, as over half of the respondents to newspaper stories calling for people with ‘possum experiences’ reported positive experiences with possums. Increasing media emphasis on positive experiences with possums and school-based education programs are identified as possible strategies for reducing conflicts and learning to live with possums in urban environments.

This paper will report on the progress of a large three year Australian Research Council (ARC) grant awarded to a multidisciplinary team of researchers in Victoria, Australia. The research, A multi-disciplinary investigation of how trauma and chronic illness impact on schooling, identity and social connectivity commenced in 2007 and is known as Keeping Connected (2007). The research is a collaborative grant in partnership with the Royal Children’s Hospital Education Institute, in association with the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne and the Centre for Adolescent Health, Royal Children’s Hospital. The research aims to investigate qualitatively, longitudinally and through multiple perspectives how young people construct/reconstruct identity and relationships with schooling following disruption associated with chronic illness. Using a mixed methodology, but with a central focus on longitudinal qualitative studies from the perspective of the young people, the study aims to identify key elements of disruption or continued connection, and will illuminate identity issues of people facing this disruption at different age and schooling points. The research outcomes will support education and health practices and provide a differently focused empirical contribution to the literature on education and social connection. The paper works at mixing methods qualitatively, rather than focusing on the overall mixed method design of the study. Assemblages of social capital theory and sociomateriality may be a useful standpoint for the development of our empirical contribution.

This article interrogates the dominant ideology that is shaping education in Victoria at the current moment. It does so by analysing the government school publication, Education Times, focusing on the years 2000–2003. During those years the Victorian Government invested a significant amount of money into improving the literacy outcomes of so-called underperforming students through initiatives such as Restart and Access to Excellence. Education Times played an important role in promoting these initiatives, and thus provides a useful vehicle for examining the ideology driving educational reform in Victoria.

Borrowing the title of Raymond Williams’ famous study, the following reflections – sometimes collective and sometimes individual – are based on a series of “Keywords”, specifically: “fear” “community” and “creativity”. By reflecting on the meanings these words have for us today, we attempt to capture their dialogical character, posing them as sites of contestation and struggle, and thereby developing a language of both resistance and hope in the face of neoliberal and neoconservative attacks on education. These reflections continue a series of arguments in defence of the profession first presented in the publication “Only connect”: English teaching, schooling and community in 2006.

This thesis investigates the professional work narratives of twelve women Junior Heads and the influence of dominant leadership discourses on shaping leadership identities. Leadership narratives reveal how power and agency are negotiated through discourses of paradox, idealism and dissent. These discourses were used by the women as positioning strategies to discursively navigate ambiguity and contradiction arising from the micro-politics of power relationships and gendered discourses within their situated practice.

Most sonographers are in favour of professional development; however, in the presence of deterrents and de-motivators, the utilisation of self-direction in their learning may be adversely affected. The mandatory input only nature of CPD and the large number of activities presented to sonographers may also prevent full utilisation of self-direction.
