Large enterprises have for many years employed eBusiness solutions in order to improve their efficiency. Smaller companies, however, have not been able to leverage these technologies due to the high level of know-how and resources required in implementing them. To solve this, novel software services are being developed to facilitate eBusiness adoption for the small enterprise with the aim of making B2Bi feasible not only between large organisations but also between trading partners of all sizes. The objective of this study was to find what standards and techniques on eBusiness and software testing and quality assurance fit best for building these new kinds of software considering the requirements their unique eBusiness approach poses. The research was conducted as a literature study with focus on standards on software testing and quality assurance together with standards on eBusiness. The study showed that the current software testing and quality assurance standards do not possess such characteristics as would make select standards evidently better fitted for building this type of software, which were established to be best developed as web services in order for them to meet their requirements. A selection of eBusiness standards and technologies was proposed to support this approach. The main finding in the study was, however, that these kinds of web services that have high interoperability requirements will have to be able to carry out automated interoperability and conformance testing as part of their operation; this objective dictates how the software are built and how testing during software development is to be done. The study showed that research on automated interoperability and conformance testing for web services is still limited and more research is needed to make the building of highly-interoperable web services more feasible.

This study focuses on the phenomenon of customer reference marketing in a business tobusiness (B to B) context. Although customer references are generally considered an important marketing and sales tool, the academic literature has paid surprisingly little attention to the phenomenon. The study suggests that customer references could be viewed as important marketing assets for industrial suppliers, and the ability to build, manage and leverage customer reference portfolios systematically constitutes a relevant marketing capability. The role of customer references is examined in the context of the industrial suppliers' shift towards a solution and project orientation and in the light of the on going changes in the project business. Suppliers in several industry sectors are undergoing a change from traditional equipment manufacturing towards project and solution oriented business. It is argued in this thesis that the high complexity, the project oriented nature and the intangible service elements that characterise many contemporary B to B offerings further increase the role of customer references. The study proposes three mechanisms of customer reference marketing: status transfer, validation through testimonials and the demonstration of experience and prior performance. The study was conducted in the context of Finnish B to B process technology and information technology companies. The empirical data comprises 38 interviews with managers of four case companies, 165 customer reference descriptions gathered from six case companies' Web sites, as well as company internal material. The findings from the case studies show that customer references have various external and internal functions that contribute to the growth and performance of B to B firms. Externally, customer references bring status transfer effects from reputable customers, concretise and demonstrate complex solutions, and provide indirect evidence of experience, previous performance, technological functionality and delivered customer value. They can also be leveraged internally to facilitate organisational learning and training, advance offering development, and motivate personnel. Major reference projects create new business opportunities and can be used as a vehicle for strategic change. The findings of the study shed light on the on going changing orientations in the project business environment, increase understanding of the variety of ways in which customer references can be deployed as marketing assets, and provide a framework of the relevant tasks and activities related to building, managing and leveraging a firm's customer reference portfolio. The findings contribute to the industrial marketing research, to the literature on marketing assets and capabilities and to the literature on projects and solutions. The proposed functions and mechanisms of customer reference marketing bring a more thorough and structured understanding about the essence and characteristics of the phenomenon and give a wide ranging view of the role of customer references as marketing assets for B to B firms. The study suggests several managerial implications for industrial suppliers in order to systematise customer reference marketing efforts.

Research on color difference evaluation has been active in recent thirty years. Several color difference formulas were developed for industrial applications. The aims of this thesis are to develop the color density which is denoted by comb g and to propose the color density based chromaticity difference formulas. Color density is derived from the discrimination ellipse parameters and color positions in the xy , xyY and CIELAB color spaces, and the color based chromaticity difference formulas are compared with the line element formulas and CIE 2000 color difference formulas. As a result of the thesis, color density represents the perceived color difference accurately, and it could be used to characterize a color by the attribute of perceived color difference from this color.

The front end of innovation is regarded as one of the most important steps in building new software products or services, and the most significant benefits in software development can be achieved through improvements in the front end activities. Problems in the front end phase have an impact on customer dissatisfaction with delivered software, and on the effectiveness of the entire software development process. When these processes are improved, the likelihood of delivering high quality software and business success increases. This thesis highlights the challenges and problems related to the early phases of software development, and provides new methods and tools for improving performance in the front end activities of software development. The theoretical framework of this study comprises two fields of research. The first section belongs to the field of innovation management, and especially to the management of the early phases of the innovation process, i.e. the front end of innovation. The second section of the framework is closely linked to the processes of software engineering, especially to the early phases of the software development process, i.e. the practice of requirements engineering. Thus, this study extends the theoretical knowledge and discloses the differences and similarities in these two fields of research. In addition, this study opens up a new strand for academic discussion by connecting these research directions. Several qualitative business research methodologies have been utilized in the individual publications to solve the research questions. The theoretical and managerial contribution of the study can be divided into three areas: 1) processes and concepts, 2) challenges and development needs, and 3) means and methods for the front end activities of software development. First, the study discloses the difference and similarities between the concepts of the front end of innovation and requirements engineering, and proposes a new framework for managing the front end of the software innovation process, bringing business and innovation perspectives into software development. Furthermore, the study discloses managerial perceptions of the similarities and differences in the concept of the front end of innovation between the software industry and the traditional industrial sector. Second, the study highlights the challenges and development needs in the front end phase of software development, especially challenges in communication, such as linguistic problems, ineffective communication channels, a communication gap between users/customers and software developers, and participation of multiple persons in software development. Third, the study proposes new group methods for improving the front end activities of software development, especially customer need assessment, and the elicitation of software requirements.

The new millennium is marked by a growing search for renewable fuels and alternative raw materials from biomass in the petrochemicals industry. However, there are many challenges to overcome regarding technological and human resources aspects. In this scenario, cashew nut oil, which is rich in natural phenols, is considered to be very promising for the development of synthetic and functional products and as a feedstock for production of fine chemicals and a wide variety of new materials.

Maamme teollistuminen sai alkunsa 1850-luvulla. Tämän jälkeen maassamme käynnistettiin ensimmäisiä ammatillisia kouluja. Niiden perustehtävä oli palvella senaikaista teollisuutta. Sotavuosien jälkeen teollistuminen suuntautui sotakorvauksien maksamiseen. Tämän myötä maahamme kasvoi vahva teollistunut yhteiskunta. 1960- ja 1970-luvun Suomessa koettiin epävarmuutta osaavasta ammattikunnasta. Näihin aikoihin hallituksemme ryhtyi kiinnittämään erityistä huomiota työvoimapolitiikkaan. Tämän tutkimuksen yhtenä tavoitteena on tarkastella keinoja, joilla hallituksemme on ohjaillut ammatillista koulutusta tarjoavia oppilaitoksia lähemmäksi elinkeinoelämän tarpeita. Toisena merkittävänä tutkimuksen kohteena on ollut hallituksen lain muutos (40/2005 työelämän kehittämis- ja palvelutehtävä) ja sen vaikutukset Hyvinkään–Riihimäen talousalueeseen. Tutkimuksen tuloksia arvioitaessa huomataan, että Opetushallituksen laatimien lakien ja asetuksien muutoksilla on ollut vaikutusta koulutuksien toteutumiseen sekä työvoimaviranomaisten väliseen yhteistyöhön. Matti Vanhasen hallituksen esittämän lain muutoksen (40/2005) myötä Hyvinkään–Riihimäen talousalueen verkostoituminen muiden elinkeinoelämän edustajien ja oppilaitosten kanssa on onnistunut erittäin hyvin. Sen tuloksista voidaan mainita talousalueelle syntynyt aikuisopisto.

ABSTRACT The main aim of this paper was to contribute to reflections in Brazil on the need to transfer knowledge held at universities and R&D institutions over to companies, i.e. to transfer scientific knowledge of chemistry to technology. It discusses how the competitiveness of countries is increasingly dependent on their technological capacity. The chemicals industry is a fundamental driver of social, environmental, economic and industrial indicators of sustainable development. In Brazil, the chemicals industry's deficit has grown over the last three decades. Patents are important sources of information because patent documents contain 75% of all technological information available. The National Institute of Industrial Property in Brazil has created a Technology Observatory with the purpose of identifying and analyzing technological information contained in patent documents within the ambit of partnerships with government entities or business associations, in order to support their technology-related decision-making processes. The paper gives examples of ethanol and biotechnology patent documents, including pharmaceuticals, of which there are very few in Brazil. However, a few of the patent applications identified are filed in Brazil, giving the country the opportunity to transform this scientific knowledge into technology by means of partnership agreements with companies. Finally, the paper presents information on the patent applications filed by the world's leading chemicals companies as measured by their revenues, and the respective numbers of patent applications in the last five years in organic chemistry and polymers, sectors in which Brazil is currently dependent on imports for over 50% of its needs. The patent assignees in these sectors in Brazil are also identified, and the paper concludes that Brazil needs to invest in the development of professionals, providing clearly-defined career paths in technology innovation teams at R&D institutions, and to foster more initiatives such as the creation of a new research and innovation entity, EMBRAPII, since investing in science and technology is a prerequisite for knowledge production, industrial property, economic development and, consequently, the competitiveness of the country.

Demand forecasting is one of the fundamental managerial tasks. Most companies do not know their future demands, so they have to make plans based on demand forecasts. The literature offers many methods and approaches for producing forecasts. When selecting the forecasting approach, companies need to estimate the benefits provided by particular methods, as well as the resources that applying the methods call for. Former literature points out that even though many forecasting methods are available, selecting a suitable approach and implementing and managing it is a complex cross-functional matter. However, research that focuses on the managerial side of forecasting is relatively rare. This thesis explores the managerial problems that are involved when demand forecasting methods are applied in a context where a company produces products for other manufacturing companies. Industrial companies have some characteristics that differ from consumer companies, e.g. typically a lower number of customers and closer relationships with customers than in consumer companies. The research questions of this thesis are: 1. What kind of challenges are there in organizing an adequate forecasting process in the industrial context? 2. What kind of tools of analysis can be utilized to support the improvement of the forecasting process? The main methodological approach in this study is design science, where the main objective is to develop tentative solutions to real-life problems. The research data has been collected from two organizations. Managerial problems in organizing demand forecasting can be found in four interlinked areas: 1. defining the operational environment for forecasting, 2. defining the forecasting methods, 3. defining the organizational responsibilities, and 4. defining the forecasting performance measurement process. In all these areas, examples of managerial problems are described, and approaches for mitigating these problems are outlined.

Työn tavoitteena oli luoda palvelutuotteiden kehitysmalli kansainvälisessä verkostossa toimivalle teollisuusyritykselle. Lisäksi työssä luotiin katsaus keskeisimpiin menestystekijöihin laitevalmistajasta palvelutarjoajaksi muuntautumisessa. Mallin kehittäminen aloitettiin kirjallisuuskatsauksella palveluiden tuotteistamiseen ja kehittämiseen, palveluliiketoimintaan sekä laitevalmistajasta palvelutarjoajaksi muuntautumiseen. Tämän lisäksi suoritettiin kohdeyrityksen palveluliiketoiminnan lähtötilanteen kartoitus. Tulevaisuuden visioon lähtötilanteesta pääsemiseksi luotiin kehitysmalli, jolla palvelutarpeista ja -ideoista saadaan tuotteistettua palvelutuote, joka voidaan liittää palvelutarjoamaan kansainvälisen verkoston toteutettavaksi. Palvelujen osuus laitevalmistusyrityksillä on voimakkaassa kasvussa. Palvelutuotantoon siirtymisen keskeisiä syitä ovat laitevalmistajan asiakkaiden arvonluontiprosesseja tukevan osaamisen tuotteistaminen, palveluiden tehokkaan tuottamisen mahdollistaminen sekä kilpailijoista erottautuminen. Palveluliiketoiminnan kehittäminen on laaja kokonaisuus. Työn keskeisenä tuloksena oli osaltaan edistää palvelutuotannon alkamista ja antaa työvälineet palvelutuotteiden edelleen kehittämiselle. Esiin tulleita jatkotutkimuksen aiheita ovat esimerkiksi palvelutoimitusten asiakkaan kokema laatu sekä millaisia haasteita pitkät laitevalmistusperinteet omaava teollisuusyritys kohtaa muuntuessaan ratkaisutoimittajaksi.

Security issues in telecommunication networks have become more important due to the development of the industry. The number of network elements and services has increased in the radio network as in the core network side, which has increased the number of security related issues. Ericsson has developed an OSS-RC product for operation and maintenance porpoises into the telecommunication networks. OSS-RC is used in a number of telecommunications operators, which have Ericsson's products used in their telecommunication networks. Ericsson provides product installation and maintenance support and guidance, but despite this, the product may have security related issues, either due to lack of following the instructions, human error or defect in the product itself or in a third party products attached. Ericsson’s Operation and Maintenance Security Service for OSS-RC networks aims to provide tools for checking the security level of the O&M product so that it meets all requirements and Ericsson’s own security related rules. Each customer has a unique telecommunications network structure and services, and so the security service has to be to create individually depending on the customer. The purpose of this thesis is to define the basic instructions for creating the security service for different customers.

Työn tavoitteena on tutkia reaaliaikaisen sanelunpurun vaikuttavuutta ja kannattavuutta. Reaaliaikaisen sanelunpurun vaikuttavuuden tarkastelun pohjana käytetään teollisuustalouden puolella tunnettuja ja yrityksissä laajasti käytössä olevia ajatusmalleja, kuten Leania ja Six Sigmaa. Lean –ajattelu perustuu läpimenoajan nopeuttamiseen, hukkaa ja ei lisäarvoa luovien vaiheiden eliminoimisella. Six Sigma keskittyy taas laatuun, jolloin tuote ja palveluvirheitä karsitaan. Lisäksi teoriaosassa käsitellään palveluiden ulkoistamista, tietosuojaa ja palkkakustannusten rakennetta. Empiriaosassa kuvataan kirurgianpoliklinikan ja leikkausosaston prosesseja. Prosesseissa keskitytään nykytilan sekä reaaliaikaisen sanelunpurun vaikutuksiin. Prosessien kuvaamisella saadaan tietoa toiminnan ongelmista ja kehittämiskohteista. Henkilökunnan haastatteluin selvitettiin sanelujonon vaikutuksia sekä kokemuksia ulkoistamisesta. Kustannusanalyysin avulla selvitettiin ulkoistamisen kannattavuutta reaaliaikaisessa sanelunpurussa. Työn tuloksena saatiin vaikuttavuus tarkastelu reaaliaikaisesta sanelunpurusta sekä ulkoistamisen kannattavuudesta. Prosessien kuvaaminen osoittaa, että useissa prosessin eri vaiheissa sanelujen puuttuminen aiheuttaa kustannuksia ja vaikuttaa henkilökunnan työhön. Kustannusanalyysin pohjalta sanelunpurun ulkoistaminen todettiin kannattavaksi. Jatkossa sanelunpurun ulkoistamisessa tulee kiinnittää huomiota siihen, mitkä osat sanelunpurkuprosessista halutaan ulkoistaa. Sähköisten järjestelmien kehittyminen vaikuttaa osaltaan tähän päätökseen. Lisäksi suoritepohjaisen hinnoittelun kehittäminen on tärkeä osa sanelunpurkuprosessin tehokkuutta.

Nykypäivänä energiansäästötavoitteet ovat haasteena yhä useammalle energiankuluttajalle. Tavoitteisiin päästäkseen yritykset ja kunnalliset energiankuluttajat kaipaavat usein apua kannattavien energiansäätökeinojen löytämiseksi. Erilaiset energiakatselmukset vastaavat tähän tarpeeseen ja ovat esimerkki tuloksellisesta energiansäästöstä. Lappeenrannan teknillinen yliopisto on tutkinut energiatehokkuutta pitkään erilaisissa projekteissa teollisuuden kanssa yhteistyössä. Osa LUT:n energiatehokkuustutkimusta ovat energia-auditoinnit yrityksille ja kunnille, joita LUT Energian projektin puitteissa alettiin kehittää vuoden 2008 syksyllä. Energia-auditointien fokuksena on pyritty pitämään pumppausprosessien energiatehokkuuden optimointia, sillä aihetta on tutkittu yliopistolla laajasti. Pumppausprosesseissa on todettu olevan merkittävä energiansäästöpotentiaali: pumppauksen kuluttamasta energiasta voi olla mahdollista säästää jopa 50 % erilaisilla laite- ja säästötaparatkaisuilla. Pumppausprosessien energia-auditointeja on tehty teollisuuden pumppauskohteisiin kuin myös kunnallisiin vesi-huoltolaitoksiin. Lisäksi energia-auditointien puitteissa on tutkittu energiansäästömahdollisuuksia rakennuksissa. Energiansäästökohteita etsitään sekä lämpö- että sähköenergian osalta. Energia-auditoinneissa pumppausten osalta energiansäästöpotentiaalia on todettu olevan etenkin suuren kokoluokan pumpuissa, joilla on pitkä vuosittainen käyttöaika. Myös pumppujen säätötavalla on suuri merkitys energiankulutukseen. Rakennusten osalta on pyritty selvittämään, kuinka energiankulutus jakautuu eri kulutusryhmien kesken. Säästökohteita on löydetty muun muassa rakennusten tiiviydestä, ilmanvaihdosta kuin valaistuksestakin. Monia auditointien asiakkaita on kiinnostanut etenkin led-teknologian hyödyntäminen yleisvalaistuksessa sekä muut keinot säästää valaistuksen energiankulutuksessa. Pyrkimyksenä on kehittää energia-auditointeja projektin aikana saavutettujen kokemusten avulla sekä myös liiketaloudellisessa mielessä opinnäytetutkielmien avulla. Menestyksekäs palveluliiketoiminta edellyttää määriteltyjä toimintatapoja, riittävän tarkkaa palvelujen rajausta ja koko energia-auditointiprosessin kehittämistä aina asiakassuhteen luomisesta sen jatko-hoitoon saakka.

The objective of the work has been to study why systems thinking should be used in combination with TQM, what are the main benefits of the integration and how it could best be done. The work analyzes the development of systems thinking and TQM with time and the main differences between them. The work defines prerequisites for adopting a systems approach and the organizational factors which embody the development of an efficient learning organization. The work proposes a model based on combination of an interactive management model and redesign to be used for application of systems approach with TQM in practice. The results of the work indicate that there are clear differences between systems thinking and TQM which justify their combination. Systems approach provides an additional complementary perspective to quality management. TQM is focused on optimizing operations at the operational level while interactive management and redesign of organization are focused on optimization operations at the conceptual level providing a holistic system for value generation. The empirical study demonstrates the applicability of the proposed model in one case study company but its application is tenable and possible also beyond this particular company. System dynamic modeling and other systems based techniques like cognitive mapping are useful methods for increasing understanding and learning about the behavior of systems. The empirical study emphasizes the importance of using a proper early warning system.

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationships between resources, competitive advantage and firm success. The study focuses, on one hand, on the financial performance of service-intensive manufac-turing firms against competitors with a lower service intensity and, on the other hand, on the resources as drivers for competitive advantage and success. The purpose of the theoretical part is to link the study in the field of the strategy research. The empirical part of the study is based on the quantitative analyses of the survey data collected from 50 major suppliers of industrial machinery and transportation equipment in Europe and North America. Results indicate that service-intensive manufacturing firms have performed better and their performance has been more stable vis-à-vis their peers. The main resources that differentiate service-intensive manufacturing firms from their non-service intensive competitors are service strategy and service-oriented top management. The analyses on the VRIO resources produced only a limited amount of information and solely service-centred culture appeared to be a rent generating resource.

The purpose of this master’s thesis was to analyze a case company’s distribution and its elements. With different distribution structure options a customer can be served with different ways. However, cost elements and service elements create different trade-offs. In this work the case company’s distribution’s present state was analyzed and conclusions were made. Based on these conclusions different alternatives for distribution were created. These different alternatives were analyzed through simulations and with more traditional calculations to compose the total operative costs of each alternative. Also other aspects were considered, such as required organizational changes and the possible better customer service. With the suggested 3-stock distribution structure shorter delivery times and possibly more punctual deliveries for products kept in stock could be achieved with the same operative costs as in current direct delivery model. Also, similar benefits could be achieved with other products with the 3-stock model.
