The present work concerns the use of shade elements as architectural elements to block sunlight in public buildings. In a city like Natal, (5o South) the incidence of sunrays in any type of design should be a constant concern for all the architects. Besides, this habit of avoiding insolation in the environment is not a common practice. Within this context, the present work has the objective to dig deep into the knowledge of solar control, studying some cases and verifying its function according to the orientation and the original design of the building, having in mind if the shade elements usually used in the region have achieved their purpose of providing protection against the incidence of direct sun rays. This study considers the position of the shade element (horizontal and vertical), the angle formed between them and the respective facades, and the local of the buildings in relation to their orientation during the summer, winter and equinox solstice. As supporting instruments the solar map of the city and the protractor, for measuring shade angles, were used. It was concluded that in all the cases studied, it was not possible to obtain the maximum use of the elements. It was verified that the best type of shade element (more efficient) for the city of Natal is the mixed type (horizontal and vertical) and that the vertical shade elements are more efficient in the early mornings and late afternoon. The horizontal shade elements are used more effective at midday. We intend to present the results of this study to the architects in the region in order to show them the correct ways of using the shade elements according to the possible orientation on the facade, as a supporting tool at the time of designing a project as well as a subsidy for further discussions on the elaboration of the new urban standards for the city of Natal/RN

The feeding habits and biological aspects of the reproductive cycle of two-spot astyanax, Astyanax cf. lacustris (Reinhardt, 1874) were investigated. Fish samples were captured on a monthly basis, using gillnets of 4 cm mesh size, from the Piató Lake, Assu, Rio Grande do Norte, during the period of September, 2006 to August, 2007. Physico-chemical parameters, such as, temperature, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen of the lake were registered. The monthly values of rainfall also were obtained. The 360 individuals captured, were measured, weighed, dissected, and stomach weight and the stage of gonadal maturity were registered. The stomach contents analyses were carried out based on volumetric method, points, frequency of occurrence and applying the Index of Relative Importance. The degrees of repletion of the stomachs were determined besides the Index of Repletion relating to feeding activity variations and frequency of ingestion with limnological parameters and rainfall. The food items identified were separated into distinct groups according to their origin. Sex ratio and Gonadosomatic Relation of females were verified to determine the spawning period and fecundity. The physico-chemical parameters presented the following annual mean values: temperature = 28.8ºC, electrical conductivity = 992.5 µS.cm-1; dissolved oxygen = 4.9 mg.L-1 during the study period. The annual mean of the rainfall was 63.5 mm. The results indicate that this species present an omnivorous feeding habit with a tendency towards insectivory, with an increase in feeding activity during the dry season. The aquatic oxygen to interfere very importance in the feeding activity than the others factors physico-chemicals of water and rainfall. There was a predominance of females, with a sex proportion of 1M:7F. The macroscopic characteristics of the ovaries and testicles revealed four stages of gonadal development: immature, maturing, mature and spent. A temporal variation was observed for the gonadal development of males and females. There was reproductive activity through out the year, with peaks in the months of February, April and June to correspond with the rain of precipitation of the region. The mean fecundity was 7.681 mature oocytes, varying from 4.476 to 12.036, with mean of 7.681. There was positive relation between fecundity and body mass. Condition Factor is not an efficient indicator of the reproductive period of this species. The species A. cf. lacustris is an opportunist and is well adapted to the conditions of the semi-arid Caatinga Biome

The mollusks present a great taxon variety and life habits in coral reefs being good environmental indicators. It is important to know the distribution pattern of the mollusks and the processes that influence it, so that disturbances in sea ecosystems could be monitored. The present study aims to accomplish the inventory and distribution of epibenthic mollusks in the Parracho of Maracajaú. 23 sites in different habitats of the Parracho were settled: 11 in the reef habitat, 3 in the sandy bottom and 9 in the seagrass bed. Qualitative and quantitative samplings have been done through snorkeling and scuba diving. Three band transects (10m²) were sampled in each site and the data were obtained to each m² of the transect, where the species were counted and the environmental variables (rugosity and recovery of the substratum) were valued. The data were submitted to multivariate analyses in order to find possible distribution patterns that could be associated to the substratum variables. The diversity indexes were calculated for each reef sites and compared with each other. A number of 46 species were registered. The reef habit at should to be the richnest area while the sandy bottom was poorest one. In the reef habitat, the mollusks were associated to rugosity and recovering of frondose algae and zoanthids, while for the seagrass bed, the animals exhibited a richness variation associated to the muddy and sandy sediment. There were found 3 species economically explored, what requires an appropriate management for the maintenance and conservation of the area resources in a sustainable way

In this dissertation I quantify residential behavior response to interventions designed to reduce electricity demand at different periods of the day. In the first chapter, I examine the effect of information provision coupled with bimonthly billing, monthly billing, and in-home displays, as well as a time-of-use (TOU) pricing scheme to measure consumption over each month of the Irish Consumer Behavior Trial. I find that time-of-use pricing with real time usage information reduces electricity usage up to 8.7 percent during peak times at the start of the trial but the effect decays over the first three months and after three months the in-home display group is indistinguishable from the monthly treatment group. Monthly and bi-monthly billing treatments are not found to be statistically different from another. These findings suggest that increasing billing reports to the monthly level may be more cost effective for electricity generators who wish to decrease expenses and consumption, rather than providing in-home displays. In the following chapter, I examine the response of residential households after exposure to time of use tariffs at different hours of the day. I find that these treatments reduce electricity consumption during peak hours by almost four percent, significantly lowering demand. Within the model, I find evidence of overall conservation in electricity used. In addition, weekday peak reductions appear to carry over to the weekend when peak pricing is not present, suggesting changes in consumer habit. The final chapter of my dissertation imposes a system wide time of use plan to analyze the potential reduction in carbon emissions from load shifting based on the Ireland and Northern Single Electricity Market. I find that CO2 emissions savings are highest during the winter months when load demand is highest and dirtier power plants are scheduled to meet peak demand. TOU pricing allows for shifting in usage from peak usage to off peak usage and this shift in load can be met with cleaner and cheaper generated electricity from imports, high efficiency gas units, and hydro units.

Anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita) é uma espécie pelágica encontrada no Sudoeste do Oceano Atlântico. Estima-se que 135000 toneladas/ano desse peixe possam ser exploradas ao longo do litoral sul do Brasil. Entretanto, os recursos pesqueiros do país são ainda inexplorados, o que torna esta matéria prima candidata em potencial para a fabricação de novos produtos a base desse pescado. Com o apoio de programas governamentais sociais, a tendência para o Brasil é para o desenvolvimento de produtos de anchoíta alternativos e que sejam capazes de suprir as necessidades específicas de cada grupo de consumo alvo. Dentro desse cenário, um estudo de novos produtos de pescado frente ao mercado se faz necessário, na tentativa de compreender as variáveis influentes do setor. Para tanto, na presente tese teve objetivou-se desenvolver produtos à base de anchoíta e estudar o comportamento do mercado consumidor frente a esses novos produtos de pescado. Um total de seis artigos foi gerado. O primeiro artigo intitulou-se: “Potencial de inserção de empanados de pescado na merenda escolar mediante determinantes individuais”. Neste objetivou-se detectar os determinantes individuais do consumo de pescado com adolescentes em idade de 12 a 17 anos, visando à inserção de empanados de pescado na merenda escolar. Foi verificado que as variáveis que melhor discriminaram a frequência de consumo foram “gosta de pescado” e “grau de escolaridade dos pais”. Os resultados indicaram um potencial de consumo de empanados de pescado por adolescentes, associado à necessidade de educação alimentar. O segundo artigo “Elaboração de hambúrguer a partir de base proteica de anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita)” no qual se objetivou avaliar o efeito de diferentes combinações de solventes para a obtenção de base proteica de anchoíta visando à elaboração de hambúrguer de pescado. As lavagens com ácido fosfórico e mais dois ciclos de água foram as que apresentaram os melhores valores para a obtenção da base proteica, baseando-se na remoção de nitrogenados e respostas sensoriais. No terceiro artigo “Aceitação de empanados de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) na merenda escolar no extremo sul do Brasil” o objetivo foi avaliar a aceitação de empanados de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) com alunos (n = 830) da rede pública de ensino, em idades entre 5 e 18 anos, de duas cidades do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os resultados indicaram relação inversa entre a aceitação de empanados de pescado e o aumento da idade das crianças. O quarto artigo estudou “Razões subjacentes ao baixo consumo de pescado pelo consumidor brasileiro.” Neste objetivou-se investigar o comportamento referente ao consumo de pescado de uma população com baixo consumo de pescado (Brasil), aplicando a Teoria do Comportamento Planejado (TCP). Os resultados indicaram que tanto a intenção como a atitude provou serem determinantes significativos na frequência de comer pescado, sendo a atitude inversamente correlacionada com o consumo de pescado. Hábito apareceu como uma importante variável discriminante para o consumo de pescado. O quinto artigo intitula-se “Modelagem de equações estruturais e associação de palavras como ferramentas para melhor compreensão do baixo consumo de pescado”. O objetivo foi desenvolver um modelo e explicar o conjunto das relações entre os construtos do consumo de pescado em uma população com baixo consumo de pescado (Brasil) através da aplicação da TCP e pelo Questionário das Escolhas dos Alimentos. Além disso, a percepção cognitiva de produtos de pescado (Engraulis anchoíta) foi avaliada pela mesma população. Os resultados indicaram um bom ajuste para o modelo proposto e mostraram que os construtos “saúde” e “controle de peso” são bons preditores da intenção. A técnica associação de palavras provou ser um método útil para a análise de percepção de um novo produto de pescado, além de ajudar a explicar os resultados obtidos pelas equações estruturais. O sexto e último artigo “Percepção de saudável em produtos de pescado em uma população com alto consumo de pescado. Uma investigação por eye tracking” em que se objetivou explorar o uso do método eye tracking para estudar a percepção de saudável em diferentes produtos de pescado. Dois pontos importantes podem ser salientados como influentes na percepção de saudável: produtos de pescado processados e alimentos fritos.

The species Dasyatis marianae inhabits coastal areas associated with coral reefs, considered endemic to the northeast of Brazil, occurring from the State of Maranhão to the south of Bahia. Specimens of this species are commonly sighted by divers and fishermen in the area of Maracajaú reefs, a complex reef that is part of the Environmental Protection Area of Coral Reefs (EPACR), which was developed in this study about the ecology and biology of the D. marianae, in order to characterize aspects of population structure in the area of the reef complex of Parracho de Maracajaú. We analyzed 120 specimens caught by artisanal fishing site of the size, weight, sex, stage of maturity and stomach contents. Most subjects were adult males (1.7:1) and was more abundant for rays with lengths between 25 and 29cm of LD, where females reach larger sizes, a feature common to other rays. The largest specimens were captured in the area of seagrass, which is preferred for the species. The distribution of species in the area showed an ontogenetic and sexual segregation, where the youthful occur near the beach, which is a likely area for nursery and growth of the adult females prevail in the seagrass, which apparently has a high prey availability, and Adult males are more distant, a higher proportion occurring in outlying areas, suggesting a habit more exploratory than the females. The evaluation of the reproductive system indicated 3 reproductive cycles per year, one young per pregnancy, and showed that the mature males were smaller than females. The cubs of D. marianae size at birth 12 to 15cm LD. As for diet, the species was characterized as carnivorous crustacean specialist. The performance of visual censuses in different localities allowed to evaluate the density of D. marianae in different environments of the complex. The species occurs in greater numbers in seagrass, environment very important for the conservation of the species. 100 individuals of D. marianae marked in reef complex area enrolled in a recapture rate of 3%. Some behavioral aspects were evaluated, as diurnal pattern of activity, interaction with cleaning and fish Pomacanthus paru followers as Lutjanus analis and Carangoides bartholomaei. Overall, much of the information obtained should be used for management of the species

Objetivo: Associar fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT) com variáveis sociodemográficas de servidores de uma instituição pública de ensino superior. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado no período de 2012 a 2013. Utilizou-se um questionário com variáveis sociodemográficas, fatores de risco para DCNT e aferição de peso e estatura. Classificou-se o estado nutricional de acordo com o índice de massa corporal. Analisaram-se os dados pelos programas Epi-Info 3.2.1 e Bioestat 5.0. As associações foram verificadas pelos testes qui-quadrado de Yates, de tendência e exato de Fisher (p≤0,05). Resultados: Participaram 225 servidores, maioria de mulheres (64,4%), na faixa etária entre 45-54 anos (37,3%) e escolaridade superior a 12 anos de estudo (85,8%). O sexo associou-se ao excesso de peso (p=0,034), consumo diário de leite integral (p=0,023), consumo insuficiente de frutas, legumes e verduras - FLV (p=0,020) e consumo insuficiente de feijão (p=0,000), sendo mais frequentes entre mulheres. Entre os homens, foi mais frequente o consumo excessivo de bebida alcoólica (p=0,000). O excesso de peso associou-se à faixa etária (p=0,008). O hábito de fumar (p=0,004) e o consumo diário de leite integral (p=0,016) apresentaram associação com a escolaridade. Conclusão: Encontrou-se elevada prevalência de fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis na amostra estudada, com associação para sexo, faixa etária e escolaridade. O excesso de peso apresentou maior ocorrência nas mulheres e nas idades acima de 45 anos, hábitos alimentares inadequados no sexo feminino, maior ingestão de bebida alcoólica no masculino e hábito de fumar nos indivíduos com maior escolaridade.

The vitamin A is essential to animals because of its participation in a great number of biological functions. The investigation of this vitamin s concentrations is important to serve as reference to normality parameters. This study had as aim to analyse the serics and hepatics concentrations of vitamin A in two groups of bovines and to compare the hepatics concentrations to the present requeriments of vitamin A for pregnant women. It was also appraised the consume habit of bovine liver by pregnant women through of the alimentary frequency quest. Two groups of bovine were studied and the first was formad by Nelore bovine breed and the second by bovine without defined breed (WDB). It was analysed 120 samples: 60 of liver and 60 of serum. The method used to dose retinol was High Performance Liquid Cromatography (HPLC). The average (+ sd) of retinol concentrations in Nelore breed bovine and WDB liver were 16947,8 + 6866,9 and 5213,1 + 2517,2 µg of retinol/100g and at serum 39,6 + 17,9 e 28,6 + 9,4 µg of retinol/dL, respectively. No statistically significant correlation was found between hepatic and the serum retinol. The bovines in this study had adequate vitamin A levels. Independently of animal breed, the daily ingestion of bovine liver is not advised for pregnant women who show adequate support of vitamin A. Constantly making efforts to strengthen reading habits in children from their earliest years of life, a process in which the family is established as the primary basis for the child to achieve the taste and interest in books. The school as being key to education supports and strengthens the skills taught in the home, with the help of technologies such as computers, disk reading, television, among other means, by which (as) children (as) found a door of communication with the outside world and everything around them. As rápidas alterações sociais, económicas, culturais e ambientais determinaram mudanças significativas nos estilos de vida e contribuíram para o crescimento e generalização do consumo de alimentos e refeições fora de casa. Portugal acompanha a tendência de aumento do consumo alimentar fora de casa, assim, as refeições fora de casa, que há uns anos eram um acontecimento fortuito, são hoje uma prática habitual das famílias portuguesas, não só durante a semana de trabalho, mas também nos fins-de-semana. As, visitas aos centros comerciais que se tornaram um hábito no nosso país incluem uma paragem nas Praças de Alimentação, espaços de excelência pela diversidade alimentar onde predominam as refeições de fast-food. Porém é fundamental a escolha adequada/equilibrada dos alimentos que se vão consumir. O presente trabalho procurou avaliar os hábitos e percepção dos consumidores de refeições rápidas com base numa ementa específica cujo alimento principal é o pão. Posteriormente e de acordo com as preferências de consumo procedeu-se à avaliação nutricional das escolhas. Neste estudo participaram 150 indivíduos que frequentaram as instalações de um restaurante de comida rápida situada na praça de alimentação de um centro comercial situado em Viseu. Foi aplicado um questionário de autopreenchimento, por nós elaborado dividido em 4 partes: caracterização sociodemográfica; hábitos de consumo dos inquiridos; produtos escolhidos pelos inquiridos; grau de satisfação face aos produtos escolhidos. As análises estatísticas foram efectuadas com recurso ao Programa informático Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS® for Windows, versão 22. Realizam-se testes de Qui-quadrado com simulação de Monte Carlo, considerando o nível de significância de 0,05. Com base nas escolhas mais frequentes feitas pelos inquiridos procedeu-se à avaliação nutricional dos menus recorrendo ao programa DIAL 1.19 versão 1 e quando não se encontrou informação neste utilizou-se a tabela de composição de alimentos portugueses on line (INSA, 2010). Compararam-se os valores obtidos para o Valor Calórico Total, os macronutrientes, a fibra, o colesterol e o sódio com as Doses Diárias Recomendadas. A amostra era composta por 68,7% mulheres e 31,3% homens, com uma média de idades de 29,9 ± 3 anos e, maioritariamente empregados (64,7%). O grau de instrução da maioria dos inquiridos (54,7%) era o ensino superior. Grande parte da amostra não se considera consumidora habitual de fast-food,referindo ainda efectuar frequentemente uma alimentação equilibrada. Sendo que apenas 5 % frequenta as instalações mais de uma vez por semana. De entre os produtos disponíveis, a preferência fez-se pela sandes e batata-frita, sendo o momento de maior consumo o almoçoA avaliação nutricional das escolhas preferenciais dos inquiridos mostrou que o VCT do menu que inclui água como bebida está dentro dos limites calóricos preconizados para o almoço excepção feita ao menu que inclui sandes quente de frango em pão de orégãos e sandes fria de queijo fresco que se destacam por apresentar um valor inferior ao limite mínimo recomendado. Pelo contrário, a inclusão no menu do refrigerante faz com que haja um aumento do VCT, independentemente da sandes considerada, em 18%. Uma análise detalhada mostra que estas ementas são desequilibradas, apresentando 33,3% delas valores de proteínas superiores à DDR enquanto que os valores de HC e lípidos se encontram maioritariamente dentro dos limites havendo apenas 13,3% das ementas fora desses valores. Relativamente ao aporte de fibra e de sódio 86,7% das ementas aparecem desenquadradas com valores excessivos de sódio e valores de fibra 33% abaixo do limite mínimo recomendado. Tratando-se de um estudo de caso em que apenas se inclui um único restaurante de uma praça de alimentação, que fornece ementas à base de pão (sandes) os resultados são interpretados de forma cautelosa e sem generalização. Podemos no entanto concluir, face aos resultados obtidos a necessidade de redução do teor de sal das ementas. Para além disso parece-nos fundamental, para que o consumidor possa comparar opções alimentares e tomar decisões informadas, a disponibilização da informação nutricional das ementas propostas.

Objectives: Analyze gender and age differences in sleep habits in a sample of adolescents. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Public schools of Viseu, Portugal. Participants: Sample consisted of 7534 students, aged 11-20 years (mean age: 14.96 ± 1.81 years; 53.6% girls). Measurements: Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire, answered in class and consists of questions to assess insomnia (DSM-IV criteria), sleep patterns, socio-demographic and daily habit variables. Results: Mean sleep duration in this sample was 8.02 ± 1.13 h. Age interfered with sleep duration that decreased with the increasing of age, from 8.45 ± 1.14 h among 11/12 years old to 7.37 ± 1.04 h for ages ≥ 17 years old. Insomnia and symptoms of insomnia were associated with gender and with increasing of age. Nearly 80% of students reported daytime tiredness, 66.7% sleepiness during the day; 56.1% during classes and 47.6% reported waking up with headaches, all variables more prevalent among girls and older adolescents. Conclusions: The sleep problems and variables related to sleep have become more frequent among girls and with increasing age. We recommend that the promotion of sleep hygiene and prevention of the consequences should be encouraged in adolescents and their families, especially among the female gender and older adolescents.

Sujet peu abordé par l'historiographie helvétique, le château, comme « institution » et comme monument, est pourtant indissociable du paysage politique et culturel suisse au XVIIIe siècle. Lieu de pouvoir et de mémoire, centre administratif et agricole, création artistique marquante, il est pour les élites de l'époque le symbole même de la réussite sociale. Ce colloque interdisciplinaire cherche à comprendre de quelle manière le château est utilisé et habité par ces élites, quelles formes d'arts s'y développent et, plus largement, quel sens il conserve dans les petites républiques qui constituent la Suisse de l'Ancien Régime. Le château sera ainsi étudié comme centre économique et symbolique d'une entité seigneuriale. La perception qu'en avaient des patriciens soucieux de légitimer leur aptitude traditionnelle au commandement politique retiendra également l'attention, de même que la vie culturelle qui s'y développa, sous l'influence des Lumières. Son « programme » architectural sera comparé aux édifices féodaux plus anciens, afin de mettre en évidence comment les agencements du XVIII e siècle conjuguent tradition et modernité. L'intérêt se portera encore sur son décor intérieur et sur son mobilier, à la recherche de l'imaginaire iconographique qui entoure la vie hors la ville. Enfin, le jardin qui accompagne le château permettra de mettre en évidence l'inscription de l'édifice dans son cadre topographique.

This study investigated the chemotaxonomic studies on Schwenckia americana Linn., a member of the family Solanaceae predominantly found mostly in low grass fields, Nigeria. The habit is annual herbaceous weed with slender stem characterized with free branching and growing up to 45cm in height.They are used mainly as medicine. The leaves are simple, entire, elliptic to ovate in shape, smooth, variable, petiolate and larger at the lower region of stem and narrowing to smaller almost sessile and oblanceolate towards the apical regions which are alternately arranged and acrescently structured from the top to the base upto 3.7 ± 1.5cm long and 2.4±0.6cm wide. The inflorescence is a panicle of 15 or more flowers occurring at stem terminal.The flowers are whitish tubular structures measuring up to 1.0±0.2cm in length and 0.1cm in diameter. The petals are whitish up to 0.9 ±0.2cm in length and sepals are greenish up to 0.1cm in length. The berry fruit is greenish when unripe and pale yellowish when ripe up to 0.3±0.1cm in diameter. The seeds are blackish and spherical or triangular shaped with rough edges measuring up to 0.1cm in diameter. The epidermal studies reveal anomocytic stomata whereas the trichomes are simple uniseriate forms wth bulge heads. The anatomy of mid-ribs and petioles showed bicollateral vascular systems. There are three vascular traces and the node is unilacunar. The petioles have 2 rib traces at primary growth phase. At secondary growth phase, the mid-rib and petiole revealed vascular arcs and the stem has a ring of open vascular system. The cytological studies showed a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 24 and n = 12 for the haploids. Alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phlobatannins, flavonoids, combined anthraquinones, free anthraquinones and cardiac glycosides are present.
