A survey of e-learning content aggregation standards

As e-learning gradually evolved many specialized and disparate systems appeared to fulfil the needs of teachers and students, such as repositories of learning objects, authoring tools, intelligent tutors and automatic evaluators. This heterogeneity raises interoperability issues giving the standardization of content an important role in e-learning. This article presents a survey on current e-learning content aggregation standards focusing on their internal organization and packaging. This study is part of an effort to choose the most suitable specifications and standards for an e-learning framework called Ensemble defined as a conceptual tool to organize a network of e-learning systems and services for domains with complex evaluation.

O uso do software winplot na aprendizagem matemática em sala de aula: uma inovação pedagógica?

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo de pesquisar o uso do software Winplot nas aulas de matemática como instrumento auxiliar e fator de ruptura das práticas pedagógicas fundamentadas no paradigma fabril, criando ambientes favoráveis ao ensino e aprendizagem, dando maior ênfase a aprendizagem, proporcionando aos educandos serem construtores dos seus próprios conhecimentos, valorizando os seus significados, propiciando a formação de cidadãos críticos e autônomos e educadores como mediadores nesse processo. Para a realização desse trabalho de pesquisa foi adotada a metodologia qualitativa com fundamentos etnográficos, a observação participante e a utilização do diário de bordo eletrônico etnográfico que nos garantiu agilidade nos registros de campo, propiciando a descrição das ações reais de educador e educandos em função do uso desse software que assegurou o desejo dos educandos, educador e pesquisador nas mudanças das praxes pedagógicas que valorizam o educando como centro no processo de ensino e aprendizagem contribuindo para que a escola seja estimulada a adotar um currículo flexível propiciando uma educação contextualizada.

Integration of repositories in elearning systems

The wide acceptance of digital repositories today in the eLearning field raises several interoperability issues. In this paper we present the interoperability features of a service oriented repository of learning objects called crimsonHex. These features are compliant with the existing standards and we propose extensions to the IMS interoperability recommendation, adding new functions, formalizing message interchange and providing also a REST interface. To validate the proposed extensions and its implementation in crimsonHex we developed a repository plugin for Moodle 2.0 that is expected to be included in the next release of this popular learning management system.

Ensemble: an innovative approach to practice computer programming

Currently, the teaching-learning process in domains, such as computer programming, is characterized by an extensive curricula and a high enrolment of students. This poses a great workload for faculty and teaching assistants responsible for the creation, delivery, and assessment of student exercises. The main goal of this chapter is to foster practice-based learning in complex domains. This objective is attained with an e-learning framework—called Ensemble—as a conceptual tool to organize and facilitate technical interoperability among services. The Ensemble framework is used on a specific domain: computer programming. Content issues are tacked with a standard format to describe programming exercises as learning objects. Communication is achieved with the extension of existing specifications for the interoperation with several systems typically found in an e-learning environment. In order to evaluate the acceptability of the proposed solution, an Ensemble instance was validated on a classroom experiment with encouraging results.

Odin: a service for gamification of learning activities

Existing gamification services have features that preclude their use by e-learning tools. Odin is a gamification service that mimics the API of state-of-the-art services without these limitations. This paper describes Odin, its role in an e-learning system architecture requiring gamification, and details its implementation. The validation of Odin involved the creation of a small e-learning game, integrated in a Learning Management System (LMS) using the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) specification.

Integrating rich learning applications in LMS

Currently, a learning management system (LMS) plays a central role in any e-learning environment. These environments include systems to handle the pedagogic aspects of the teaching–learning process (e.g. specialized tutors, simulation games) and the academic aspects (e.g. academic management systems). Thus, the potential for interoperability is an important, although over looked, aspect of an LMS. In this paper, we make a comparative study of the interoperability level of the most relevant LMS. We start by defining an application and a specification model. For the application model, we create a basic application that acts as a tool provider for LMS integration. The specification model acts as the API that the LMS should implement to communicate with the tool provider. Based on researches, we select the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) from IMS. Finally, we compare the LMS interoperability level defined as the effort made to integrate the application on the study LMS.

At a time of global economic instability, to which Portugal is not oblivious, and aware that the main source of Portuguese State revenue relies on the collection of tribute, the National Republican Guard holds within its mission relevant assignments to the protection of the financial interests of the country, in particular, fiscal and customs. These assignments were inherited from the century - old institution Guarda Fiscal - with evidence given in this domain, which was integrated into the National Republican Guard in 1993, to adopt, a 1St model, that held a specialized unit – Brigada Fiscal, with surveillance and patrolling missions of costa and fiscal and customs supervision, throughout the national territory and maritime zone of respect. In 2009, the result of political decisions, reorganization the State's central administration, appears de 2Nd model, because the Brigada Fiscal assignments were divided by two specialized units - UAF with investigation skills, and UCC for patrolling and surveillance of the coast. Analyzed the legal spectrum of special legislation leading the criminal and transgression sector punitive (RGIT), in essence, is in the UAF that resides the role assignments from the scope of the investigation and supervision of goods in the national territory on a par with the tax authority. Tax inspection assignments, fiscal and customs of the National Republican Guard, are unmatched in the National Tribute System, constituting itself as a potentiality of this special body, in similarity of their counterparts - Spain and Italy; however, have some constraints, that urge to clarify and repair. Foreseeing the future, face the announced news of a new restructuring, on behalf of the interests of the country, and in order to raise the quality of performance of the tax inspection, fiscal and customs, the National Republican Guard shall maintain a model based on the experience already accumulated, obviously adapted to the new demands of a changing society. Despite the current model gain in efficiency, loses in effectiveness. However, the efficiency of a model, without the necessary resources, can never bring “the letter to Garcia” against any kind of infringements, criminal or transgressions. Unless better opinion, both tax structures of the National Republican Guard are valid as an instrument for the prevention and combat of these illegal types. Because they are strategic in pursuing the public interest, given the scarce resources of the country and be the National Republican Guard, the force with the means and know-how of this nature. The political power has the final word.

La enseñanza de la física general en la universidad : propuestas de investigación.

El fracaso en la asignatura de Física General del primer año de las licenciaturas de Ciencias e Ingeniería es elevado en las universidades portuguesas. Sobre este problema existen muchos estudios que valoran factores no académicos. Existen también investigaciones sobre el aprendizaje de física en la universidad que, sin embargo, abordan aspectos más específicos. El interés de esta investigación está puesto en la calidad del aprendizaje de Física General: cómo se puede evaluar y mejorar. Presentamos un marco teórico que sirve de fundamento a un conjunto de instrumentos de evaluación (evaluation toolbox) del aprendizaje. Este conjunto de instrumentos permite evaluar de forma extensiva -en varios cursos- y, a la vez supervisar la calidad de aprendizaje de Física General mientras se imparte, de forma que se pueda incrementar la calidad de dicho aprendizaje.

Mineração e a questão ambiental : estudo do caso da mina de carvão de Candiota-RS

As grandes reservas de carvão existentes no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul e as crescentes necessidades energéticas do país estabelecem o cenário para um incremento no aproveitamento deste bem mineral. A presente pesquisa trata-se de um estudo de caso abordando o processo de recuperação ambiental de áreas mineradas na mina de carvão da Companhia Riograndense de Mineração, em Candiota, RS, através do levantamento da atual situação ambiental e dos impactos causados pelo empreendimento, além de procurar identificar as percepções que a empresa e a comunidade têm do atual desempenho ambiental da mineração. Os resultados visam amostrar tendências comportamentais que podem contribuir para o estabelecimento de políticas e ações no sentido de melhorar o relacionamento entre a mineração e a comunidade onde está inserida. Por fim, são apresentadas recomendações para a empresa, a partir dos dados levantados em campo, bem como sugestões para futuros trabalhos nesta área.
