This research is set in the context of today’s societies, in which the corporate visual symbology of a business, corporation or institution constitutes an essential way to transmit its corporate image. Traditional discursive procedures can be discovered in the development of these signs. The rhetorical strategies developed by the great classical authors appear in the logo-symbols expressing the corporate values of today’s companies. Thus, rhetoric is emerging once again in the sense it had many centuries ago: A repertory of rules that, paradoxically, standardizes the deviations of language and whose control is synonymous with power. The main objective of this study is to substantiate the rhetorical construction of logos using as a model of analysis the classical process of creating discourse. This involves understanding logos as persuasive discourses addressed to a modern audience. Our findings show that the rhetorical paradigm can be considered as a creative model for the con­struction of an original logo consistent with a company’s image.

This article argues that Dashiell Hammett's 1929 novel Red Harvest is best understood in the context of the consolidation and expansion of the US state following the First World War and the Russian Revolution. It also argues that Hammett's novel constitutes a highly significant articulation of theoretical debates about the nature of political authority and state power in the modern era and speaks about the transition of one state formation to another. Insofar as Red Harvest explores the way in which the state's coercive and ethical character are bound up together, this article argues that Hammett's novel draws upon an understanding of political authority and state power primarily derived from Gramsci, via Marx. Gramsci insists that control cannot be maintained through force alone (and his conception of hegemony, in turn, suggests a power bloc that can become fragmented and disunited in a war of position). In the same way, Red Harvest traces the transformation of the “economic-corporate” state into the expanded or “ethical” State but crucially any ethical dimension, as Gramsci notes, is always beholden to the needs of the capitalist economy. As such, the apparently arbitrary bloodshed in the novel is conceived as a relatively minor realignment in the ranks of the capitalist classes – certainly less serious than the miners' strike that prefigures the novel. What makes this realignment significant is that it calls attention to the state both as repressive and as a site of conflict and compromise. Here, the work performed by the Continental Op and by the crime novel in general – simultaneously buttressing and, to some extent, contesting the power of the state – needs to be understood as part of the process by which the state is consistently enacting hegemony (albeit protected by the armour of coercion). The article concludes by pointing out that while Gramsci is perhaps too willing to dwell upon the state's expanded reach, Red Harvest is more interested in examining possible “cracks and fissures” in the state formation, even if the critique it ultimately offers goes nowhere and yields nothing.

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT) deficiency is characterized by increased neutrophil elastase (NE) activity and oxidative stress in the lung. We hypothesized that NE exposure generates reactive oxygen species by increasing lung nonheme iron. To test this hypothesis, we measured bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) iron and ferritin levels, using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) optical emission spectroscopy and an ELISA, respectively, in A1AT-deficient patients and healthy subjects. To confirm the role of NE in regulating lung iron homeostasis, we administered intratracheally NE or control buffer to rats and measured BAL and lung iron and ferritin. Our results demonstrated that A1AT-deficient patients and rats postelastase exposure have elevated levels of iron and ferritin in the BAL. To investigate the mechanism of NE-induced increased iron levels, we exposed normal human airway epithelial cells to either NE or control vehicle in the presence or absence of ferritin, and quantified intracellular iron uptake using calcein fluorescence and ICP mass spectroscopy. We also tested whether NE degraded ferritin in vitro using ELISA and western analysis. We demonstrated in vitro that NE increased intracellular nonheme iron levels and degraded ferritin. Our results suggest that NE digests ferritin increasing the extracellular iron pool available for cellular uptake.

This study aimed at examining resource partitioning both at the inter- and intraspecific levels between paired chondrostome fishes: Chondrostoma nasus, the nase, C. toxostoma, the sofie, and their hybrid. The study was performed in the south of France and concerned a main river (the Durance River) and a tributary (the Buech River). In these rivers, C. nasus was an introduced species, originating in central Europe, and C. toxostoma was an endemic congener, in the south of France. Stable isotope analysis was used to analyse trophic and spatial niches. Isotopic differences indicated that individuals from the three taxa (C. nasus, C. toxostoma and their hybrid) have different spatial origins. At the interspecific level, the different chondrostomes originating from the Buech River showed a high level of trophic niche overlap. At the intraspecific level, nase individuals originating from the different spatial origins showed a resource polymorphism; differences in morphology were associated with variation in behaviour and life history traits. Their coexistence was a likely outcome of resource polymorphism. This study provides an example of the importance of considering the link between intra- and interspecific interactions to gain an understanding of the mechanisms driving the coexistence of species-pairs. In this study, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to extensively investigate, for the first time, the effect that microneedle (MN) geometry (MN height, and MN interspacing) and force of application have upon penetration characteristics of soluble poly(methylvinylether-co-maleic anhydride, PMVE/MA) MN arrays into neonatal porcine skin in vitro. The results from OCT investigations were then used to design optimal and suboptimal MN-based drug delivery systems and evaluate their drug delivery profiles cross full thickness and dermatomed neonatal porcine skin in vitro. It was found that increasing the force used for MN application resulted in a significant increase in the depth of penetration achieved within neonatal porcine skin. For example, MN of 600 µm height penetrated to a depth of 330 µm when inserted at a force of 4.4 N/array, while the penetration increased significantly to a depth of 520 µm, when the force of application was increased to 16.4 N/array. At an application force of 11.0 N/array it was found that, in each case, increasing MN height from 350 to 600 µm to 900 µm led to a significant increase in the depth of MN penetration achieved. Moreover, alteration of MN interspacing had no effect upon depth of penetration achieved, at a constant MN height and force of application. With respect to MN dissolution, an approximate 34% reduction in MN height occurred in the first 15 min, with only 17% of the MN height remaining after a 3-hour period. Across both skin models, there was a significantly greater cumulative amount of theophylline delivered after 24 h from an MN array of 900 µm height (292.23 ± 16.77 µg), in comparison to an MN array of 350 µm height (242.62 ± 14.81 µg) (p < 0.001). Employing full thickness skin significantly reduced drug permeation in both cases. Importantly, this study has highlighted the effect that MN geometry and application force have upon the depth of penetration into skin. While it has been shown that MN height has an important role in the extent of drug delivered across neonatal porcine skin from a soluble MN array, further studies to evaluate the full significance of MN geometry on MN mediated drug delivery are now underway. The successful use of OCT in this study could prove to be a key development for polymeric MN research, accelerating their commercial exploitation.

The effects of the active sulphoxide metabolite of the fasciolicide triclabendazole (Fasinex, Ciba-Geigy) on the vitelline cells of Fusciola hepatica were determined in vitro by transmission electron microscopy using both intact flukes and tissue-slice material. At a triclabendazole concentration of 15 mu g/ml the vitelline cells of intact flukes showed ultrastructural changes only after prolonged incubation periods (12-24 h). The changes observed were a swelling of the granular endoplasmic reticulum (GER) cisternae with decreased ribosomal covering in the intermediate-type cells and condensation of chromatin and disappearance of the nucleolus in the nucleus of the stem cell. Similar changes were evident more quickly (by 6 h) in whole flukes treated at the higher concentration of 50 mu g/ml. The shell globule clusters were loosely packed in the intermediate type-2 cells, and the number of intermediate type-1 cells declined with more prolonged incubation. Disruption of the nurse-cell cytoplasm was also observed from 12 h onwards. After only 6 h incubation of tissue-slice material at 50 mu g/ml, intermediate type-1 cells were absent, shell globule clusters in mature cells were loosely packed and the nurses cell cytoplasm was badly disrupted. By 12 h the vitelline cells were vacuolated and grossly abnormal. The results are discussed in relation to postulated actions of triclabendazole against the microtubule component of the cytoskeleton and against protein synthesis in the fluke.
