This study examines the effect of the Great Moderation on the relationship between U.S. output growth and its volatility over the period 1947 to 2006. First, we consider the possible effects of structural change in the volatility process. In so doing, we employ GARCH-M and ARCH-M specifications of the process describing output growth rate and its volatility with and without a one-time structural break in volatility. Second, our data analyses and empirical results suggest no significant relationship between the output growth rate and its volatility, favoring the traditional wisdom of dichotomy in macroeconomics. Moreover, the evidence shows that the time-varying variance falls sharply or even disappears once we incorporate a one-time structural break in the unconditional variance of output starting 1982 or 1984. That is, the integrated GARCH effect proves spurious. Finally, a joint test of a trend change and a one-time shift in the volatility process finds that the one-time shift dominates.

We compare the ocean temperature evolution of the Holocene as simulated by climate models and reconstructed from marine temperature proxies. This site provides informations about the Holocene temperature trends as simulated by the models. We use transient simulations from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model, as well as an ensemble of time slice simulations from the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project. The general pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) in the models shows a high latitude cooling and a low latitude warming. The proxy dataset comprises a global compilation of marine alkenone- and Mg/Ca-derived SST estimates. Independently of the choice of the climate model, we observe significant mismatches between modelled and estimated SST amplitudes in the trends for the last 6000 years. Alkenone-based SST records show a similar pattern as the simulated annual mean SSTs, but the simulated SST trends underestimate the alkenone-based SST trends by a factor of two to five. For Mg/Ca, no significant relationship between model simulations and proxy reconstructions can be detected. We tested if such discrepancies can be caused by too simplistic interpretations of the proxy data. We tested different seasons and depths in the model to compare the proxy data trends, and can reconcile only part of the mismatches on a regional scale. We therefore considered the additional environmental factor changes in the planktonic organisms' habitat depth and a time-shift in the recording season to diagnose whether invoking those environmental factors can help reconciling the proxy records and the model simulations. We find that invoking shifts in the living season and habitat depth can remove some of the model-data discrepancies in SST trends. Regardless whether such adjustments in the environmental parameters during the Holocene are realistic, they indicate that when modeled temperature trends are set up to allow drastic shifts in the ecological behavior of planktonic organisms, they do not capture the full range of reconstructed SST trends. Our findings indicate that climate model and reconstructed temperature trends are to a large degree only qualitatively comparable, thus providing a challenge for the interpretation of proxy data as well as the models' sensitivity to orbital forcing.

A study which examines the use of aircraft as wind sensors in a terminal area for real-time wind estimation in order to improve aircraft trajectory prediction is presented in this paper. We describe not only different sources in the aircraft systems that provide the variables needed to derivate the wind velocity but the capabilities which allow us to present this information for ATM Applications. Based on wind speed samples from aircraft landing at Madrid-Barajas airport, a real-time wind field will be estimated using a data processing approach through a minimum variance method. Finally the accuracy of this procedure will be evaluated for this information to be useful to Air Traffic Control.

Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to consider a (perhaps) pendant issue: to define monumentality by means of critical approach within the modern context of architecture. The idea of what monumental is during modernity establishes a fraction of the "modern typical denial" based on the rejection of any link to tradition and history. From the anachronistic idea of static monuments, to the orchestration of architecture as a symbolic tool, the most important process of the revolution of architecture during the 20th Century had a few signs that allowed us to imagine a reality conformed by fundamental nuances and disagreements. The aim of this research is not to tell a new story about the modern period, although inexorable it takes note of the register to present the discussion. Therefore, the idea of what we expose as criticism has to do with structural and objective possibilities in the architectural discourse. A speech analyzed in response to three differentiated domains designated here as: the written, the projected and the built during the selected time. In that way, we believe the dimensional possibilities of criticism are favored and the narrative sense of historical process is expanded. In terms of this investigation monumentality constitutes a matter of study that leads us to contradictions, unnoticed issues and necessary gray areas in the articulation of a complex vision about depicted events. We are convinced in the efficiency of a dialectical analysis model in order to define the monumental condition both as a positive value (propitious, useful, truthful, etc.) and a negative one (untrue, ostentatious, pompous, etc.); the idea is to show the differences around respective meanings deriving in terms of monumentality and monumentalism. Contrasting information and the opposition of ideas exposed in this light helped to develop the assumption of dimensional criticism. From Sigfried Giedeon's writings -and the New Monumentality- to Le Corbusier and the construction of Chandigarh; and from Karel Teige's anti-monumental criticism going through the revision of Ivan Leonidov's constructivist project; the variety of episodes referred to this work find some sense and reject the probabilities about confusion and arbitrary in the selection of themes. In order to assign some methodological precision and even geometrical criterion, the proposed structure divides the "great modern time" into two historical blocks: first-modernity (circa 1910-1935) and late-modernity (around 1935-1960). The first part analyzes a -mainly- reactive stance towards the hypothetical expressions of monumental condition, whereas in the second block the rejection tends to be transformed and to project a new scenario that will foresee the ideological postmodern fracture. At the same time, the three registers are composed by two chapters each one will operate depending on the described time frame. Each chapter is organized in three subsequent parts: at first explaining preliminary ideas for discussion, second presenting central points and finally orienting a partial recount. The research is complemented with an introductory episode describing specific definitions concerning the concepts of monument, monumentalism and monumentality; and mainly orienting the developed critique. In a final intervention, as a way of conclusion, we reflect on ideological and aesthetic qualities that postmodern time shift represented for this investigation.

In the last decade, a number of quantitative epidemiological studies of specific diseases have been done in developing countries that for the first time allow estimation of the total burden of disease (mortality and morbidity) attributable to use of solid fuels in adult women and young children, who jointly receive the highest exposures because of their household roles. Few such studies are available as yet for adult men or children over 5 years. This paper evaluates the existing epidemiological studies and applies the resulting risks to the more than three-quarters of all Indian households dependent on such fuels. Allowance is made for the existence of improved stoves with chimneys and other factors that may lower exposures. Attributable risks are calculated in reference to the demographic conditions and patterns of each disease in India. Sufficient evidence is available to estimate risks most confidently for acute respiratory infections (ARI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Estimates for tuberculosis (TB), asthma, and blindness are of intermediate confidence. Estimates for heart disease have the lowest confidence. Insufficient quantitative evidence is currently available to estimate the impact of adverse pregnancy outcomes (e.g., low birthweight and stillbirth). The resulting conservative estimates indicate that some 400–550 thousand premature deaths can be attributed annually to use of biomass fuels in these population groups. Using a disability-adjusted lost life-year approach, the total is 4–6% of the Indian national burden of disease, placing indoor air pollution as a major risk factor in the country.

Four long sediment cores from locations in the Framstrait, the Norwegian-Greenland Seas and the northern North Atlantic were analysed in a high resolution sampling mode (1 - 2 cm density) for their benthic foraminiferal content. In particular the impact of the intense climatic changes at glacial/interglacial transitions (terminations I and II) on the benthic community have been of special interest. The faunal data were investigated by means of multivariate analysis and represented in their chronological occurence. The most prominent species of benthic foraminifera in the Norwegian-Greenland Seas are Oridorsalis umbonatus, Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, the group of Cassidulina, Pyrgo rotalaria, Globocassidulina subglobosa and fragmented tubes of arenaceous species. The climatic signal of termination I as well as termination II is recorded in the fossil foraminiferal tests as divided transition from glacial to interglacial. The elder INDAR maximum (individuals accumulation rate = individuals/sq cm * 1.000 y; Norwegian-Greenland Seas: average 3.000 - 6.000 individuals/sq cm * 1.000 y; northern North Atlantic: average 150 individuals/sq cm * 1.000 y) is followed by a period of decreased values. The second, younger maximum reaches comparable values as the elder maximum. The interglacial INDAR are in average 700 individuals/sq cm * 1.000 y in the Norwegian-Greenland Seas and 200 individuals/sq cm * 1.000 y in average in the northern North Atlantic. The occurence of the elder INDAR maximum shows a distinct chronological transgressivity between the northern North Atlantic (12.400 ybp.) and the Framstrait (8.900 ybp.). The time shift from south to north amounts 3.500 yrs., the average expanding velocity 0,78 km per year. Within the Norwegian-Greenland Seas the average expanding velocity amounts 0,48 km per year. This chronological transgressivity is interpreted as impact of the progressive expanding of the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Current during the deglaciation. The dynamic of the faunal development is defined as increasing INDAR per time. The elder INDAR maximum shows in both glacial/interglacial transitions an exponential increase from south to north. Termination II is characterized by a general higher dynamic as termination I. By means of the high resolution sampling density the impact of regional isotopic recognized melt-water events is recognized by an increase of endobenthic and t-ubiquitous species in the Norwegian-Greenland Seas sediments. During termination I the relative minimum between both INDAR maxima occur chronological with an decrease of calculated sea surface temperatures. This is interpreted as indication of the close pelagic - benthic coupling. The climatic signal in the northern North Atlantic recorded in the fossil benthic foraminiferal community shows a lower amplitude as in the Norwegian-Greenland Seas. The occurence of the epibenthic Cibicidoides wuellersforfi allows to evaluate the variability of the bottom water mass. In general at all core locations increasing lateral bottom currents are recognized with the occurence of the second younger INDAR maximum. In comparison with various paleo-climatological data sets fossil benthic foraminifers show a distinct koherence with changes of the atmospheric temperatures, the SSTs and the postglacial sea level increase. The benthic foraminiferal fauna is bound indirectly on and indicative for regional climatic changes, but principal dependent upon global climatic changes.

Recently underwater sensor networks (UWSN) attracted large research interests. Medium access control (MAC) is one of the major challenges faced by UWSN due to the large propagation delay and narrow channel bandwidth of acoustic communications used for UWSN. Widely used slotted aloha (S-Aloha) protocol suffers large performance loss in UWSNs, which can only achieve performance close to pure aloha (P-Aloha). In this paper we theoretically model the performances of S-Aloha and P-Aloha protocols and analyze the adverse impact of propagation delay. According to the observation on the performances of S-Aloha protocol we propose two enhanced S-Aloha protocols in order to minimize the adverse impact of propagation delay on S-Aloha protocol. The first enhancement is a synchronized arrival S-Aloha (SA-Aloha) protocol, in which frames are transmitted at carefully calculated time to align the frame arrival time with the start of time slots. Propagation delay is taken into consideration in the calculation of transmit time. As estimation error on propagation delay may exist and can affect network performance, an improved SA-Aloha (denoted by ISA-Aloha) is proposed, which adjusts the slot size according to the range of delay estimation errors. Simulation results show that both SA-Aloha and ISA-Aloha perform remarkably better than S-Aloha and P-Aloha for UWSN, and ISA-Aloha is more robust even when the propagation delay estimation error is large. © 2011 IEEE.

The late Neogene was a time of cryosphere development in the northern hemisphere. The present study was carried out to estimate the sea surface temperature (SST) change during this period based on the quantitative planktonic foraminiferal data of 8 DSDP sites in the western Pacific. Target factor analysis has been applied to the conventional transfer function approach to overcome the no-analog conditions caused by evolutionary faunal changes. By applying this technique through a combination of time-slice and time-series studies, the SST history of the last 5.3 Ma has been reconstructed for the low latitude western Pacific. Although the present data set is close to the statistical limits of factor analysis, the clear presence of sensible variations in individual SST time-series suggests the feasibility and reliability of this method in paleoceanographic studies. The estimated SST curves display the general trend of the temperature fluctuations and reveal three major cool periods in the late Neogene, i.e. the early Pliocene (4.7 3.5 Ma), the late Pliocene (3.1-2.7 Ma), and the latest Pliocene to early Pleistocene (2.2-1.0 Ma). Cool events are reflected in the increase of seasonality and meridional SST gradient in the subtropical area. The latest Pliocene to early Pleistocene cooling is most important in the late Neogene climatic evolution. It differs from the previous cool events in its irreversible, steplike change in SST, which established the glacial climate characteristic of the late Pleistocene. The winter and summer SST decreased by 3.3-5.4°C and 1.0 2.1C in the subtropics, by 0.9°C and 0.6C in the equatorial region, and showed little or no cooling in the tropics. Moreover, this cooling event occurred as a gradual SST decrease during 2.2 1.0 Ma at the warmer subtropical sites, while that at cooler subtropical site was an abrupt SST drop at 2.2 Ma. In contrast, equatorial and tropical western Pacific experienced only minor SST change in the entire late Neogene. In general, subtropics was much more sensitive to climatic forcing than tropics and the cooling events were most extensive in the cooler subtropics. The early Pliocene cool periods can be correlated to the Antarctic ice volume fluctuation, and the latest Pliocene early Pleistocene cooling reflects the climatic evolution during the cryosphere development of the northern hemisphere.

This paper considers the optimal linear estimates recursion problem for discrete-time linear systems in its more general formulation. The system is allowed to be in descriptor form, rectangular, time-variant, and with the dynamical and measurement noises correlated. We propose a new expression for the filter recursive equations which presents an interesting simple and symmetric structure. Convergence of the associated Riccati recursion and stability properties of the steady-state filter are provided. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The leaf area index (LAI) of fast-growing Eucalyptus plantations is highly dynamic both seasonally and interannually, and is spatially variable depending on pedo-climatic conditions. LAI is very important in determining the carbon and water balance of a stand, but is difficult to measure during a complete stand rotation and at large scales. Remote-sensing methods allowing the retrieval of LAI time series with accuracy and precision are therefore necessary. Here, we tested two methods for LAI estimation from MODIS 250m resolution red and near-infrared (NIR) reflectance time series. The first method involved the inversion of a coupled model of leaf reflectance and transmittance (PROSPECT4), soil reflectance (SOILSPECT) and canopy radiative transfer (4SAIL2). Model parameters other than the LAI were either fixed to measured constant values, or allowed to vary seasonally and/or with stand age according to trends observed in field measurements. The LAI was assumed to vary throughout the rotation following a series of alternately increasing and decreasing sigmoid curves. The parameters of each sigmoid curve that allowed the best fit of simulated canopy reflectance to MODIS red and NIR reflectance data were obtained by minimization techniques. The second method was based on a linear relationship between the LAI and values of the GEneralized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (GESAVI), which was calibrated using destructive LAI measurements made at two seasons, on Eucalyptus stands of different ages and productivity levels. The ability of each approach to reproduce field-measured LAI values was assessed, and uncertainty on results and parameter sensitivities were examined. Both methods offered a good fit between measured and estimated LAI (R(2) = 0.80 and R(2) = 0.62 for model inversion and GESAVI-based methods, respectively), but the GESAVI-based method overestimated the LAI at young ages. ArtinM is a D-mannose binding lectin that has been arousing increasing interest because of its biomedical properties, especially those involving the stimulation of Th1 immune response, which confers protection against intracellular pathogens The potential pharmaceutical applications of ArtinM have motivated the production of its recombinant form (rArtinM) so that it is important to compare the sugar-binding properties of jArtinM and rArtinM in order to take better advantage of the potential applications of the recombinant lectin. In this work, a biosensor framework based on a Quartz Crystal Microbalance was established with the purpose of making a comparative study of the activity of native and recombinant ArtinM protein The QCM transducer was strategically functionalized to use a simple model of protein binding kinetics. This approach allowed for the determination of the binding/dissociation kinetics rate and affinity equilibrium constant of both forms of ArtinM with horseradish peroxidase glycoprotein (HRP), a N-glycosylated protein that contains the trimannoside Man alpha 1-3[Man alpha 1-6]Man, which is a known ligand for jArtinM (Jeyaprakash et al, 2004). Monitoring of the real-time binding of rArtinM shows that it was able to bind HRP, leading to an analytical curve similar to that of jArtinM, with statistically equivalent kinetic rates and affinity equilibrium constants for both forms of ArtinM The lower reactivity of rArtinM with HRP than jArtinM was considered to be due to a difference in the number of Carbohydrate Recognition Domains (CRDs) per molecule of each lectin form rather than to a difference in the energy of binding per CRD of each lectin form.
