A fully adaptive multiresolution scheme for shock computations

The scheme is based on Ami Harten's ideas (Harten, 1994), the main tools coming from wavelet theory, in the framework of multiresolution analysis for cell averages. But instead of evolving cell averages on the finest uniform level, we propose to evolve just the cell averages on the grid determined by the significant wavelet coefficients. Typically, there are few cells in each time step, big cells on smooth regions, and smaller ones close to irregularities of the solution. For the numerical flux, we use a simple uniform central finite difference scheme, adapted to the size of each cell. If any of the required neighboring cell averages is not present, it is interpolated from coarser scales. But we switch to ENO scheme in the finest part of the grids. To show the feasibility and efficiency of the method, it is applied to a system arising in polymer-flooding of an oil reservoir. In terms of CPU time and memory requirements, it outperforms Harten's multiresolution algorithm.The proposed method applies to systems of conservation laws in 1Dpartial derivative(t)u(x, t) + partial derivative(x)f(u(x, t)) = 0, u(x, t) is an element of R-m. Godunov, Lax-Wendroff, and ENO are some of the popular names. Godunov scheme resolves well the shocks, but accuracy (of first order) is poor in smooth regions. Lax-Wendroff is of second order, but produces dangerous oscillations close to shocks. ENO schemes are good alternatives, with high order and without serious oscillations. But the price is high computational cost.Ami Harten proposed in (Harten, 1994) a simple strategy to save expensive ENO flux calculations. The basic tools come from multiresolution analysis for cell averages on uniform grids, and the principle is that wavelet coefficients can be used for the characterization of local smoothness.. Typically, only few wavelet coefficients are significant. At the finest level, they indicate discontinuity points, where ENO numerical fluxes are computed exactly. Elsewhere, cheaper fluxes can be safely used, or just interpolated from coarser scales. Different applications of this principle have been explored by several authors, see for example (G-Muller and Muller, 1998).Our scheme also uses Ami Harten's ideas. But instead of evolving the cell averages on the finest uniform level, we propose to evolve the cell averages on sparse grids associated with the significant wavelet coefficients. This means that the total number of cells is small, with big cells in smooth regions and smaller ones close to irregularities. This task requires improved new tools, which are described next.

Lesões isquêmicas do testículo de cães mediante garroteamento temporário do cordão espermático

No homem, considera-se emergência urológica a isquemia decorrente de torção testicular. Há controvérsias quanto ao tempo necessário para causar morbidade ou reversibilidade das lesões isquêmicas das células germinativas. Este estudo realizado em cães tem como objetivo determinar o período crítico do aparecimento e a reversibilidade das lesões após garroteamento do cordão espermático. Os resultados mostraram que duas horas é o período crítico de sobrevivência das células germinativas à isquemia. Após 60 dias, houve recuperação completa do epitélio germinativo. Animais com período de isquemia de 2h 30min, examinados após 60 dias, apresentaram necrose testicular.

6-methoxyquercetin-3-0-(6-E-feruloyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside from Paepalanthus polyanthus (Eriocaulaceae)

The new 6-methoxyquercetin-3-O-(6-E-feruloyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1) was isolated from the aerial parts of Paepalanthus polyanthus and characterized by spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR experiments, as well as electrospray mass spectrometry. IFPA Meeting 2010 Workshop Report I: Immunology; Ion transport; Epigenetics; Vascular reactivity; Epitheliochorial placentation; Proteomics

Workshops are an important part of the IFPA annual meeting. At IFPA Meeting 2010 there were twelve themed workshops, six of which are summarized in this report 1. The immunology workshop focused on normal and pathological functions of the maternal immune system in pregnancy. 2. The transport workshop dealt with regulation of ion and water transport across the syncytiotrophoblast of human placenta. 3. The epigenetics workshop covered DNA methylation and its potential role in regulating gene expression in placental development and disease. 4. The vascular reactivity workshop concentrated on methodological approaches used to study placental vascular function. 5. The workshop on epitheliochorial placentation covered current advances from in vivo and in vitro studies of different domestic species. 6. The proteomics workshop focused on a variety of techniques and procedures necessary for proteomic analysis and how they may be implemented for placental research. Diferentes procedimentos na determinação de indicadores internos para estimativa de produção fecal e fluxo duodenal de matéria seca em bovinos

Times of in situ incubation (144 and 288h) for determination of internal markers IADF and INDF and the effects of differents procedures (wash or not the nylon bag every 72h incubation) was evaluated in samples of diet, duodenal digesta and cattle feces. The duodenal flow dry matter and fecal production utilizing the internal markers to compare with the external marker chromium oxide there was estimated. The animals were fed with sorgum silage, concentrate or urea. In this experiment, a latin square design was used, in a factorial scheme (two times of incubation × two processing nylon bag). No was observed effect of the incubation time or processing in the internal markers INDF and IADF concentration and the in situ incubation after 144h is adequate to reproduce the indigestible markers fraction in samples. For fecal production estimation, the external marker chromium oxide presented similar result (1.26 kg day-1) as the total fecal collection (1.49 kg day-1). Both the internal markers overestimate the duodenal flow dry matter when compared with the external marker chromium oxide.

Políticas gubernamentales sobre envejecimiento: el caso de Chile

El análisis de las políticas gubernamentales sobre el envejecimiento en Chile consta de 3 secciones. La primera contiene un diagnóstico demográfico y socioeconómico de la tercera edad. La segunda sección aborda los objetivos de las políticas, cuyo propósito central es definido como el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida del adulto mayor a través del fomento de la actividad independiente, de su dignidad de vida y de sus lazos con la familia y la comunidad. La tercera sección reúne un conjunto de recomendaciones de políticas específicas en las áreas de salud, educación, vivienda y medio ambiente, trabajo y seguridad social, uso del tiempo libre y participación social.
