Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on sisäisten materiaalivirtojen jäljittäminen Cloetta Fazer Suklaa Oy:ssä. Työssä selvitetään yrityksen jäljitettävyyden nykytila case-raaka-aineiden ja case-tuotteiden osalta niillä osastoilla, joilla kyseisiä raaka-aineita ja tuotteita käsitellään. Tämä tutkimus perustuu teemahaastatteluihin, case-tutkimuksiin ja omiin havaintoihin yrityksen eri osastoilla. Jäljitettävyyden nykytilan selvittämisen jälkeen saadaan selville mahdolliset, niin sanotut "aukkopaikat" jäljitettävyysketjussa yrityksen sisällä. Työn teoriaosuudessa tarkastellaan jäljitettävyyttä osana koko yrityksen ja hankintatoimen laadun osana. Total Quality Management, laatujohtaminen ja Total Quality Control ovat teorioita, joihin työn teoriaosuus pohjautuu. Tutkimus osoittaa, että jäljitettävyyden nykytila on kohtuullisen hyvä case yrityksessä, Cloetta Fazer Suklaa Oy:ssä. Kuitenkin kannattaa harkita mahdollisia parannuksia, jotta jäljitettävyyden astetta saadaan edelleen kohotettua. Mitä tulee jäljitettävyystilanteisiin eräseurattavia raaka-aineita on yksinkertaisempi jäljittää kuin ei-eräseurattavia raaka-aineita, koska eräseurattavien raaka-aineet kuuluvat SAP-toiminnnanohjausjärjestelmään kun taas ei-eräseurattavat raaka-aineet perustuvat pääasiassa manuaalisiin dokumentteihin.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli löytää sopivia suorituskyvyn mittareita kunnossapitopalveluyrityksen hankintatoimeen. Mittarivalinnat rajattiin käsittelemään toimittajien hallintaa, hintakehityksen ja maksujen hallintaa sekä ostotyön onnistumista. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin myös, mihin hankintatoimen tekijöihin esimerkkiyrityksen sisäiset asiakkaat eivät olleet tyytyväisiä. Sovellettavaksi suorituskykymittaristoksi valittiin Balanced Scorecard. Materiaalihallinnon sisäiset asiakkaat kokivat asiakastyytyväisyyden ongelmakohdiksi hankintatoimen luotettavuuden, ostajan palvelualttiuden, saatavilla olon, yhteisen toiminnansuunnittelun ja ongelmista tiedottamisen puutteen, melko pitkät toimitusajat sekä hitaat varaston täytöt. Hankintatoimen ongelmakohdiksi ostajien haastatteluissa nousivat koulutuksen ja yhteisen toiminnansuunnittelun puute sekä pienten ostotilausten ja pienten toimittajien suuri määrä. Nämä tekijät huomioitiin tietyiltä osin myös mittarivalinnoissa. Materiaalihallintoon rakennettu Balanced Scorecard sopii osaston tämän hetkiseen tilanteeseen. Mittariston viidessä näkökulmassa mittareita on lukumäärältään kattavasti; Balanced Scorecard toimii enemmänkin seurantajärjestelmänä. Ajan kuluessa todennäköisesti keskitytään vain tärkeimpiin mittareihin jolloin järjestelmän ohjaavampi vaikutus korostuu. Kun mittareissa on saavutettu jatkuvaa parantumista, kannattaa harkita uusien mittareiden ja näkökulmien valintaa. Materiaalihallintoon luotiin myös yleinen Excel- tiedosto, johon merkitään kunkin mittarin sen hetkiset arvot ja josta niiden kehitystä seurataan säännöllisesti. Tutkimustyyppi työssä on konstruktiivinen. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin sisäisten asiakkaiden ja ostajien teemahaastattelulla käyttäen kvalitatiivisia tutkimusmenetelmiä. Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin esimerkkiyrityksen materiaalihallinnon kaksi ostajaa sekä 21 sisäistä asiakasta, jotka ovat työnsä puolesta yhteydessä materiaalihallintoon.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli suunnitella ja toteuttaa tasapainotetun mittariston rakentamisprojekti Kotkan Energia Oy:ssä. Mittaristosta oli tarkoitus luoda ylimmän johdon käyttöön työväline, jota voidaan hyödyntää suorituskyvyn seuraamisen lisäksi myös organisaation strategisessa ohjauksessa. Rakennetun mittariston perustana käytettiin Kaplanin ja Nortonin kehittämää Balanced Scorecardia, jossa strategista suorituskykyä tarkastellaan talouden, asiakkaiden, sisäisten prosessien sekä innovatiivisuuden ja oppimisen näkökulmista. Tutkimusmetodologiana käytettiin konstruktiivista lähestymistapaa. Mittaristoprojektin tuloksena Kotkan Energia Oy:lle luotiin tasapainotettu tuloskortti, joka pohjautuu yhtiön missioon, visioon ja strategiaan. Tuloskortin näkökulmiin määritettiin kriittisten menestystekijöiden perusteella mittarit, jotka jaoteltiin varsinaisiin mittareihin, seurantamittareihin ja valmisteilla oleviin mittareihin. Varsinaisille mittareille asetettiin sekä lyhyen että pitkän tähtäimen tavoitteet. Mittaristoa ja mittareita analysoitiin useista näkökulmista projektin eri vaiheissa. Mittareihin liittyvät tiedot dokumentoitiin mittarikuvauksiin. Mittareille määritettiin raportointitaajuudet ja –ajankohdat. Lisäksi tutkittiin mittaritietojen vertailtavuutta muihin organisaatioihin. Projektin osana yhtiön intranet-sivuille luotiin käyttöliittymä, jonka avulla yhtiön koko henkilöstö pystyy hyödyntämään mittariston tietoja. Mittariston viimeistelyyn ja kehittämiseen liittyvät ideat muotoiltiin jatkosuunnitelmiksi.

Industry's growing need for higher productivity is placing new demands on mechanisms connected with electrical motors, because these can easily lead to vibration problems due to fast dynamics. Furthermore, the nonlinear effects caused by a motor frequently reduce servo stability, which diminishes the controller's ability to predict and maintain speed. Hence, the flexibility of a mechanism and its control has become an important area of research. The basic approach in control system engineering is to assume that the mechanism connected to a motor is rigid, so that vibrations in the tool mechanism, reel, gripper or any apparatus connected to the motor are not taken into account. This might reduce the ability of the machine system to carry out its assignment and shorten the lifetime of the equipment. Nonetheless, it is usually more important to know how the mechanism, or in other words the load on the motor, behaves. A nonlinear load control method for a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor is developed and implemented in the thesis. The purpose of the controller is to track a flexible load to the desired velocity reference as fast as possible and without awkward oscillations. The control method is based on an adaptive backstepping algorithm with its stability ensured by the Lyapunov stability theorem. As a reference controller for the backstepping method, a hybrid neural controller is introduced in which the linear motor itself is controlled by a conventional PI velocity controller and the vibration of the associated flexible mechanism is suppressed from an outer control loop using a compensation signal from a multilayer perceptron network. To avoid the local minimum problem entailed in neural networks, the initial weights are searched for offline by means of a differential evolution algorithm. The states of a mechanical system for controllers are estimated using the Kalman filter. The theoretical results obtained from the control design are validated with the lumped mass model for a mechanism. Generalization of the mechanism allows the methods derived here to be widely implemented in machine automation. The control algorithms are first designed in a specially introduced nonlinear simulation model and then implemented in the physical linear motor using a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) application. The measurements prove that both controllers are capable of suppressing vibration, but that the backstepping method is superior to others due to its accuracy of response and stability properties.

A hybrid electric vehicle is a fast-growing concept in the field of vehicle industry. Nowadays two global problems make manufactures to develop such systems. These problems are: the growing cost of a fuel and environmental pollution. Also development of controlled electric drive with high control accuracy and reliability allows improving of vehicle drive characteristics. The objective of this Diploma Thesis is to investigate the possibilities of electrical drive application for new principle of parallel hybrid vehicle system. Electric motor calculations, selection of most suitable control system and other calculations are needed. This work is not final work for such topic. Further investigation with more precise calculations, modeling, measurements and cost calculations are needed to answer the question if such system is efficient.

Bark beetle outbreaks have a devastating effect on economically important forests worldwide, thus requiring extensive application of management control strategies. The presence of unmanaged protected areas in close proximity to managed forests can instigate concerns that bark beetle infestations may spread from unmanaged into managed stands. We studied the impact of differential management of forest stands on the dispersal dynamics of the European spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus, making use of inferential population genetics on mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Bayesian inferences of migration rates and a most parsimonious dispersal tree show that outgoing gene flow was consistently higher from managed to unmanaged areas. Reason for that is likely the thorough removal of potential breeding material in managed forests and thus the dispersal of the base stock beetles from these areas to unmanaged areas where breeding material is available. Our study suggests that the potential threat posed by unmanaged to managed forests in regard to I. typographus infestation needs to be carefully re-considered.

Objective To evaluate the performance of diagnostic centers in the classification of mammography reports from an opportunistic screening undertaken by the Brazilian public health system (SUS) in the municipality of Goiânia, GO, Brazil in 2010. Materials and Methods The present ecological study analyzed data reported to the Sistema de Informação do Controle do Câncer de Mama (SISMAMA) (Breast Cancer Management Information System) by diagnostic centers involved in the mammographic screening developed by the SUS. Based on the frequency of mammograms per BI-RADS® category and on the limits established for the present study, the authors have calculated the rate of conformity for each diagnostic center. Diagnostic centers with equal rates of conformity were considered as having equal performance. Results Fifteen diagnostic centers performed mammographic studies for SUS and reported 31,198 screening mammograms. The performance of the diagnostic centers concerning BI-RADS classification has demonstrated that none of them was in conformity for all categories, one center presented conformity in five categories, two centers, in four categories, three centers, in three categories, two centers, in two categories, four centers, in one category, and three centers with no conformity. Conclusion The results of the present study demonstrate unevenness in the diagnostic centers performance in the classification of mammograms reported to SISMAMA from the opportunistic screening undertaken by SUS.

The usual objectives that companies have for subcontracting are studied in this thesis. The case company’s objectives for contract manufacturing now and in the future are identified. The main objective of the thesis is to create a focused model for the structure and supply chain management in the contract manufacturing network. This model is made for case company’s certain profit center. The different possibilities and their advantages and disadvantages for the structure and supply chain management are examined trough a theoretical review of literature. The possibilities found are then examined from the case company’s point of view. The case company point of view is established based on the opinions of the case company’s representatives. The outcome of the thesis is that the star shaped structure with supply chain management centralized to case company would be the best choice for the case company to manage the contract manufacture network.

Tämän diplomityön päätavoite on selvittää keinoja Woikoski Oy:n jakelulogistiikan kustannustehokkuuden kehittämiseksi. Päätavoite voidaan jakaa osatavoitteisiin, joita ovat varastonohjauksen kehittäminen ja jakelun kuljetustoimintojen tehostaminen. Varastoinnin nykytilaa arvioitiin ABC-analyysin avulla. Saatujen tulosten pohjalta määritettiin luokkakohtaiset varastonohjaussäännöt ja kiertonopeustavoitteet, jotka yhdessä muodostavat yritykselle varastopolitiikan. Havaitut ongelmat kulminoituivat jatkuvan varastoseurannan puuttumiseen, suuriin varastotasoihin sekä kysynnänhallinnan puutteisiin. Toimenpidesuosituksina yrityksen tulee investoida tehokkaaseen varastonhallintajärjestelmään sekä aloittaa systemaattinen kysynnän ennustaminen. Kuljetuksiin liittyviksi toimenpiteiksi ehdotetaan runko- ja jakelukuljetusten reittien sekä jakelualueiden optimointia ja tuloksena saadun jakelumallin käyttöönottoa. Nykyistä jakelurahtien hinnoittelua suositellaan tarkennettavaksi siten, että jakelukustannuksia ja toimitusmääriä eritellään nykyistä tarkemmin ja asiakkaille kohdistetaan rahtikustannuksia todenmukaisin perustein. Lisäksi logistiikkatoimintaa tulee yhtenäistää eri toimipaikkojen kesken ja toimintojen mittaamista on tehostettava organisaatiossa.
The effects of real time control of welding parameters on weld quality in plasma arc keyhole welding

Joints intended for welding frequently show variations in geometry and position, for which it is unfortunately not possible to apply a single set of operating parameters to ensure constant quality. The cause of this difficulty lies in a number of factors, including inaccurate joint preparation and joint fit up, tack welds, as well as thermal distortion of the workpiece. In plasma arc keyhole welding of butt joints, deviations in the gap width may cause weld defects such as an incomplete weld bead, excessive penetration and burn through. Manual adjustment of welding parameters to compensate for variations in the gap width is very difficult, and unsatisfactory weld quality is often obtained. In this study a control system for plasma arc keyhole welding has been developed and used to study the effects of the real time control of welding parameters on gap tolerance during welding of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304L. The welding tests demonstrated the beneficial effect of real time control on weld quality. Compared with welding using constant parameters, the maximum tolerable gap width with an acceptable weld quality was 47% higher when using the real time controlled parameters for a plate thickness of 5 mm. In addition, burn through occurred with significantly larger gap widths when parameters were controlled in real time. Increased gap tolerance enables joints to be prepared and fit up less accurately, saving time and preparation costs for welding. In addition to the control system, a novel technique for back face monitoring is described in this study. The test results showed that the technique could be successfully applied for penetration monitoring when welding non magnetic materials. The results also imply that it is possible to measure the dimensions of the plasma efflux or weld root, and use this information in a feedback control system and, thus, maintain the required weld quality.

Työn tavoitteena oli kuvata ja priorisoida toimitusketjun dynaamisen mallinnustyökalun vaatimukset, sekä muodostaa tämän pohjalta ohjelmistokehitystä tukeva oliomalli. Vaatimuksia selvitettiin teoreettisen tarkastelun, aiemmin toteutettujen kyselytutkimusten sekä viiden pilottitapauksen avulla. Toimitusketjun hallinta ei ole pelkästään materiaalivirtojen vaan myös näihin liittyvän informaation hallintaa. Holististen toimitusketjuongelmien mallintaminen edellyttää siis informaatiovirtojen ja niitä saatelevien ohjausmekanisemien mallintamista. Markkinoilla on selkeästi tilaa tukijärjestelmille, jotka mahdollistaisivat multidimensionaalisten - tuotto, aika, palvelu - toimitusketjuongelmien tarkastelun. Systeemidynamiikan teorian mukaisesti oliomallin lähtökohdaksi valittiin tärkeimpien takaisinkytkentäsilmukkojen mallinnus. Takaisinkytkentäsilmukoiden avulla kyetään mallintamaan kompleksisia systeemejä ajan suhteen. Mallinnetut toimitusketjujen takaisinkytkentäsilmukkat ovat operaatio-, ohjaus-, kysyntä- ja strategiasilmukka. Toimitusketjun ohjausmekanismien, sekä systeemidynamiikan perusteiden pohjalta mallinnustyökalun vaatimuksista muodostettiin oliomalli. Muodostettu oliomalli on Locomotiven - toimitusketjun mallinnustyökalun - perusta.

The RPC Detector Control System (RCS) is the main subject of this PhD work. The project, involving the Lappeenranta University of Technology, the Warsaw University and INFN of Naples, is aimed to integrate the different subsystems for the RPC detector and its trigger chain in order to develop a common framework to control and monitoring the different parts. In this project, I have been strongly involved during the last three years on the hardware and software development, construction and commissioning as main responsible and coordinator. The CMS Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) system consists of 912 double-gap chambers at its start-up in middle of 2008. A continuous control and monitoring of the detector, the trigger and all the ancillary sub-systems (high voltages, low voltages, environmental, gas, and cooling), is required to achieve the operational stability and reliability of a so large and complex detector and trigger system. Role of the RPC Detector Control System is to monitor the detector conditions and performance, control and monitor all subsystems related to RPC and their electronics and store all the information in a dedicated database, called Condition DB. Therefore the RPC DCS system has to assure the safe and correct operation of the sub-detectors during all CMS life time (more than 10 year), detect abnormal and harmful situations and take protective and automatic actions to minimize consequential damages. The analysis of the requirements and project challenges, the architecture design and its development as well as the calibration and commissioning phases represent themain tasks of the work developed for this PhD thesis. Different technologies, middleware and solutions has been studied and adopted in the design and development of the different components and a big challenging consisted in the integration of these different parts each other and in the general CMS control system and data acquisition framework. The topic of this thesis is the simulation of a combination of several control and data assimilation methods, meant to be used for controlling the quality of paper in a paper machine. Paper making is a very complex process and the information obtained from the web is sparse. A paper web scanner can only measure a zig zag path on the web. An assimilation method is needed to process estimates for Machine Direction (MD) and Cross Direction (CD) profiles of the web. Quality control is based on these measurements. There is an increasing need for intelligent methods to assist in data assimilation. The target of this thesis is to study how such intelligent assimilation methods are affecting paper web quality. This work is based on a paper web simulator, which has been developed in the TEKES funded MASI NoTes project. The simulator is a valuable tool in comparing different assimilation methods. The thesis contains the comparison of four different assimilation methods. These data assimilation methods are a first order Bayesian model estimator, an ARMA model based on a higher order Bayesian estimator, a Fourier transform based Kalman filter estimator and a simple block estimator. The last one can be considered to be close to current operational methods. From these methods Bayesian, ARMA and Kalman all seem to have advantages over the commercial one. The Kalman and ARMA estimators seems to be best in overall performance.

Delays in the justice system have been undermining the functioning and performance of the court system all over the world for decades. Despite the widespread concern about delays, the solutions have not kept up with the growth of the problem. The delay problem existing in the justice courts processes is a good example of the growing need and pressure in professional public organizations to start improving their business process performance.This study analyses the possibilities and challenges of process improvement in professional public organizations. The study is based on experiences gained in two longitudinal action research improvement projects conducted in two separate Finnish law instances; in the Helsinki Court of Appeal and in the Insurance Court. The thesis has two objectives. First objective is to study what kinds of factors in court system operations cause delays and unmanageable backlogs and how to reduce and prevent delays. Based on the lessons learned from the case projects the objective is to give new insights on the critical factors of process improvement conducted in professional public organizations. Four main areas and factors behind the delay problem is identified: 1) goal setting and performance measurement practices, 2) the process control system, 3) production and capacity planning procedures, and 4) process roles and responsibilities. The appropriate improvement solutions include tools to enhance project planning and scheduling and monitoring the agreed time-frames for different phases of the handling process and pending inventory. The study introduces the identified critical factors in different phases of process improvement work carried out in professional public organizations, the ways the critical factors can be incorporated to the different stages of the projects, and discusses the role of external facilitator in assisting process improvement work and in enhancing ownership towards the solutions and improvement. The study highlights the need to concentrate on the critical factors aiming to get the employees to challenge their existing ways of conducting work, analyze their own processes, and create procedures for diffusing the process improvement culture instead of merely concentrating of finding tools, techniques, and solutions appropriate for applications from the manufacturing sector

The irrigation management based on the monitoring of the soil water content allows for the minimization of the amount of water applied, making its use more efficient. Taking into account these aspects, in this work, a sensor for measuring the soil water content was developed to allow real time automation of irrigation systems. This way, problems affecting crop yielding such as irregularities in the time to turn on or turn off the pump, and excess or deficit of water can be solved. To develop the sensors were used stainless steel rods, resin, and insulating varnish. The sensors measuring circuit was based on a microcontroller, which gives its output signal in the digital format. The sensors were calibrated using soil of the type Quartzarenic Neosoil. A third order polynomial model was fitted to the experimental data between the values of water content corresponding to the field capacity and the wilting point to correlate the soil water content obtained by the oven standard method with those measured by the electronic circuit, with a coefficient of determination of 93.17%, and an accuracy in the measures of ±0.010 kg kg-1. Based on the results, it was concluded that the sensor and its implemented measuring circuit can be used in the automation process of irrigation systems.
