Leichhardtithrips evanidus gen. et sp. nov., a wingless, fungus-feeding species of Phlaeothripidae, is described from a single female taken in D'Aguilar National Park, Brisbane. This species has exceptionally reduced sclerotisation rendering systematic comparisons of the new genus difficult. The cylindrical form of the eighth antennal segment is unique in the family, and the compound eyes are not developed on the ventral surface of the head. © The State of Queensland, Queensland Museum 2013.

A new analogue of graphene containing boron, carbon and nitrogen (BCN) has been obtained by the reaction of high-surface-area activated charcoal with a mixture of boric acid and urea at 900 degrees C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal the composition to be close to BCN. The X-ray diffraction pattern, high-resolution electron microscopy images and Raman spectrum indicate the presence of graphite-type layers with low sheet-to-sheet registry. Atomic force microscopy reveals the sample to consist of two to three layers of BCN, as in a few-layer graphene. BCN exhibits more electrical resistivity than graphene, but weaker magnetic features. BCN exhibits a surface area of 2911 m(2)g(-1), which is the highest value known for a BxCyNz composition. It exhibits high propensity for adsorbing CO2 (approximate to 100 wt %) at 195 K and a hydrogen uptake of 2.6 wt % at 77 K. A first-principles pseudopotential-based DFT study shows the stable structure to consist of BN3 and NB3 motifs. The calculations also suggest the strongest CO2 adsorption to occur with a binding energy of 3.7 kJ mol(-1) compared with 2.0 kJ mol(-1) on graphene.

Ingarden (1962, 1964) postulates that artworks exist in an “Objective purely intentional” way. According to this view, objectivity and subjectivity are opposed forms of existence, parallel to the opposition between realism and idealism. Using arguments of cognitive science, experimental psychology, and semiotics, this lecture proposes that, particularly in the aesthetic phenomena, realism and idealism are not pure oppositions; rather they are aspects of a single process of cognition in different strata. Furthermore, the concept of realism can be conceived as an empirical extreme of idealism, and the concept of idealism can be conceived as a pre-operative extreme of realism. Both kind of systems of knowledge are mutually associated by a synecdoche, performing major tasks of mental order and categorisation. This contribution suggests that the supposed opposition between objectivity and subjectivity, raises, first of all, a problem of translatability, more than a problem of existential categories. Synecdoche seems to be a very basic transaction of the mind, establishing ontologies (in the more Ingardean way of the term). Wegrzecki (1994, 220) defines ontology as “the central domain of philosophy to which other its parts directly or indirectly refer”. Thus, ontology operates within philosophy as the synecdoche does within language, pointing the sense of the general into the particular and/or viceversa. The many affinities and similarities between different sign systems, like those found across the interrelationships of the arts, are embedded into a transversal, synecdochic intersemiosis. An important question, from this view, is whether Ingardean’s pure objectivities lie basically on the impossibility of translation, therefore being absolute self-referential constructions. In such a case, it would be impossible to translate pure intentionality into something else, like acts or products.

We have seen growing interest in discursive perspectives on strategy. This perspective holds great promise for development of an understanding on how strategy discourse and subjectivity are intertwined. We wish to add to this existing research by outlining a discursive struggle approach to subjectivity. To understand the complex subjectification and empowering/disempowering effects of organizational strategy discourse, this approach focuses on organization-specific discourse mobilizations an various ways of resistance. Drawing on an analysis of the discourses and practices of ‘strategic development’ in an engineering and consulting group we provide an empirical illustration of such struggles over subjectivity. In particular, we report three examples of competing ways of making sense of and giving sense to strategic development, with specific subjectification tendencies. First, we show how corporate management can mobilize and appropriate a specific kind of discourse to attempt to gain control of the organization, which tends to reproduce managerial hegemony, but also trigger discursive and other forms of resistance. Second, we will illustrate how middle managers resist this hegemony by initiating a strategy discourse of their own to create room for manoeuvre in controversial situations. Third, we show how project engineers can distance themselves from managerial-initiated strategy discourses to maintain a viable identity despite all kinds of pressures. Although our examples are case-specific, we believe that similar discursive dynamics also characterize strategizing in other organizations.

Copper(II) complexes Cu(satp)(L)] (1-3) of a Schiff base thiolate (salicylidene-2-aminothiophenol, H(2)satP) and phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and hypoxic photocytotoxicity studied. The redox active complexes show the Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near -0.5 V for 1 and near 0.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) for 2 and 3. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes (similar to 1.85 mu(B)) are avid DNA binders giving K(b) values within 1.0 x 10(5) - 8.0 x 10(5) M(-1). Thermal melting and viscosity data along with molecular docking calculations suggest DNA groove and/or partial intercalative binding of the complexes. The complexes show anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in red light under argon via type-I pathway, while DNA photocleavage in air proceeds via hydroxyl radical pathway. The DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveal a thyil radical pathway for the anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and suggest the possibility of generation of a transient copper(I) species due to bond breakage between the copper and sulfur to generate the thyil radical. An oxidation of the copper(I) species is likely by oxygen in an aerobic medium or by the buffer medium in an anaerobic condition. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells (IC(50) = 8.3(+/- 1.0) mu M) in visible light, while showing lower dark toxicity (IC(50) = 17.2(+/- 1.0) mu M). A significant reduction in the dark toxicity is observed under hypoxic cellular conditions (IC(50) = 30.0(+/- 1.0) mu M in dark), while retaining its photocytotoxicity (IC(50) = 8.0(+/- 1.0) mu M). Lanthanide(III) complexes [Ln(pyphen)(acac)(2)(NO3)] (1, 2), [Ln(pydppz)(acac)(2)(NO3)] (3, 4) and [La(pydppz)(anacac)(2)(NO3)] (5), where Ln is La(III) (in 1, 3, 5) and Gd(III) (in 2, 4), pyphen is 6-(2-pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, pydppz is 6-(2-pyridyl)-dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine, anacac is anthracenylacetylacetonate and acac is acetylacetonate, were prepared, characterized and their DNA photocleavage activity and photocytotoxicity studied. The crystal structure of complex 2 displays a GdO6N3 coordination. The pydppz complexes 3-5 show an electronic spectral band at similar to 390 nm in DMF. The La(III) complexes are diamagnetic, while the Gd(III) complexes are paramagnetic with seven unpaired electrons. The molar conductivity data suggest 1 : 1 electrolytic nature of the complexes in aqueous DMF. They are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving K-b in the range of 5.4 10(4)-1.2 x 10(6) M-1. Complexes 3-5 efficiently cleave supercoiled DNA to its nicked circular form in UV-A light of 365 nm via formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) species. Complexes 3-5 also exhibit significant photocytotoxic effect in HeLa cancer cells giving respective IC50 value of 0.16(+/- 0.01), 0.15(+/- 0.01) and 0.26 +/-(0.02) mu M in UV-A light of 365 nm, while they are less toxic in dark with an IC50 value of >3 mu M. The presence of an additional pyridyl group makes the pydppz complexes more photocytotoxic than their dppz analogues. FACS analysis of the HeLa cells treated with complex 4 shows apoptosis as the major pathway of cell death. Nuclear localization of complex 5 having an anthracenyl moiety as a fluorophore is evidenced from the confocal microscopic studies.

Pyrenylterpyridine (pytpy) oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(pytpy)(L)]Cl-2 (1-6) of the dipyridophenazine bases (L), viz., dipyrido-6,7,8,9-tetrahydrophenazine (dpqC in 1), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine-2-carboxylic acid (dppzc in 2), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine-11-sulfonic acid (dppzs in 3), 7-aminodipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppza in 4), benzo-i]dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppn in 5) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 6) were prepared, characterized and their DNA binding, photocleavage activity and photocytotoxicity studied. The complexes which showed a d-d band near 750 nm in DMF are efficient binders to calf thymus DNA (K-b: 3.2 x 10(5)-2.9 x 10(6) M-1). The complexes showed significant pUC19 DNA cleavage in near-IR light of 785 nm forming center dot OH radicals and photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells in visible light with the benzo-i] dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine complex 5 showing a remarkably low IC50 value of 0.036 mu M. Flow-cytometric analysis shows a high sub-G1 phase cell cycle arrest in HeLa cells by the complexes on photo-irradiation. The photocytotoxicity correlates well with the hydrophobicity, photosensitizing ability and DNA binding propensity of the complexes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Iron(II) complexes Fe(L)(2)](2+) as perchlorate (1-3) and chloride (1a-3a) salts, where L is 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (phtpy in 1, 1a), 4'-(9-anthracenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (antpy in 2, 2a) and 4'-(1-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (pytpy in 3, 3a), were prepared and their photocytotoxicity studied. The diamagnetic complexes 1-3 having an FeN6 core showed an Fe(III)-Fe(II) redox couple near 1.0 V vs. saturated calomel electrode in MeCN-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. Complexes 2 and 3, in addition, displayed a quasi-reversible ligand-based redox process near 0.0 V. The redox and spectral properties are rationalized from the theoretical studies. The complexes bind to DNA in a partial intercalative mode. The pytpy complex efficiently photo-cleaves DNA in green light via superoxide and hydroxyl radical formation. The antpy and pytpy complexes exhibited a remarkable photocytotoxic effect in HeLa cancer cells (IC50, similar to 9 mu M) in visible light (400-700 nm), while remaining essentially nontoxic in dark (IC50, similar to 90 mu M). Formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside the HeLa cells was evidenced from the fluorescence enhancement of dichlorofluorescein upon treatment with the pytpy complex followed by photo-exposure. The antpy and pytpy complexes were used for cellular imaging. Confocal imaging and dual staining study using propidium iodide (PI) showed nuclear localization of the complexes. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Ferrocenyl platinum(II) complexes (1-3), viz. Pt(Fc-tpy)Cl]Cl (1), Pt(Fc-tpy)(NPC)]Cl (2, HNPC = N-propargyl carbazole) and Pt(Fc-bpa)Cl]Cl (3), were prepared, characterized and their anti-proliferative properties in visible light in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell lines have been studied. Pt(Ph-tpy)Cl]Cl (4) was prepared and used as a control. Complexes 1 and 3, structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, show distorted square-planar geometry for the platinum(II) centre. Complexes 1 and 2 having the Fc-tpy ligand showed an intense absorption band at similar to 590 nm. The ferrocenyl complexes are redox active showing the Fc(+)-Fc couple near 0.6 V vs. SCE in DMF-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP). Complexes 1-3 showed external binding to calf thymus DNA. Both 1 and 2 showed remarkable photocytotoxicity in HaCaT cell lines giving respective IC50 values of 9.8 and 12.0 mu M in visible light of 400-700 nm with low dark toxicity (IC50 > 60 mu M). Fluorescent imaging studies showed the spread of the complexes throughout the cell localising both in cytoplasm and the nucleus. The ferrocenyl complexes triggered apoptosis on light exposure as evidenced from the Annexin V-FITC/PI and DNA ladder formation assays. Spectral studies revealed the formation of ferrocenium ions upon photo-irradiation generating cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals via a Fenton type mechanism. The results are rationalized from a TDDFT study that shows involvement of ferrocene and the platinum coordinated terpyridine moiety as respective HOMO and LUMO.

N-Decanoyl-L-alanine (DA) was mixed with either colorless 4,4-bipyridine (BP) or various derivatives such as chromogenic oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) functionalized with isomeric pyridine termini in specific molar ratios. This mixtures form salt-type gels in a water/ethanol (2:1, v/v) mixture. The gelation properties of these two-component mixtures could be modulated by variation of the position of the N atom of the end pyridyl groups in OPVs. The presence of acid-base interactions in the self-assembly of these two-component systems leading to gelation was probed in detail by using stoichiometry-dependent UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, temperature-dependent UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy clearly demonstrated a J-type aggregation mode of these gelator molecules during the sol-to-gel transition process. Morphological features and the arrangement of the molecules in the gels were examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Calculation of the length of each molecular system by energy minimization in its extended conformation and comparison with the XRD patterns revealed that this class of gelator molecules adopts lamellar organizations. Rheological properties of these two-component systems provided clear evidence that the flow behavior could be modulated by varying the acid/amine ratio. Polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and XRD results revealed that the solid-phase behavior of such two-component mixtures (acid/base=2:1) varied significantly upon changing the proton-acceptor part from BP to OPV. Interestingly, the XRD pattern of these acid/base mixtures after annealing at their associated isotropic temperature was significantly different from that of their xerogels.

Cation sensing properties of the three positional isomers of rhodamine based sensors (1-3) are studied in water. The sensors differ only in the position of pyridine's nitrogen. The chemosensor 1, with pyridine nitrogen at ortho-position, showed a selective colorimetric detection of Cu(II) ions in water, at physiological pH 7.4 and also in medium containing BSA (bovine serum albumin) and blood serum. Notably the compound 2 and 3, with pyridine end located at meta-and para-positions did not show any color change with Cu(II) ions, although both the compounds showed turn-on change both in color and fluorescence with Hg(II) ions specifically. All the probes showed ratiometric changes with the specific metal ions. The changing position of nitrogen also changed the complexation pattern of the sensors with the metal ions. Probe 1 showed 2 : 1 complexation with Cu(II), whereas 2 and 3 showed 1 : 1 complexation with Hg(II) ions. The mechanism investigation showed that the change in color upon addition of metal ions is due to the ring-opening of the spirolactam ring of the probes. Cu(II) interacted with ligand 1 through a three-point interaction mode comprising carbonyl oxygen, amido nitrogen and pyridine nitrogen end. But in case of 2 and 3, Hg2+ only interacted through pyridine nitrogen ends. Quantitative estimation of Cu2+ and Hg2+ in complex biological media such as bovine albumin protein (BSA) and human blood serum were performed using these sensors. Rapid on-site detection as well as discrimination of these toxic ions was demonstrated using easily prepared portable test-strips.

Protein functional annotation relies on the identification of accurate relationships, sequence divergence being a key factor. This is especially evident when distant protein relationships are demonstrated only with three-dimensional structures. To address this challenge, we describe a computational approach to purposefully bridge gaps between related protein families through directed design of protein-like ``linker'' sequences. For this, we represented SCOP domain families, integrated with sequence homologues, as multiple profiles and performed HMM-HMM alignments between related domain families. Where convincing alignments were achieved, we applied a roulette wheel-based method to design 3,611,010 protein-like sequences corresponding to 374 SCOP folds. To analyze their ability to link proteins in homology searches, we used 3024 queries to search two databases, one containing only natural sequences and another one additionally containing designed sequences. Our results showed that augmented database searches showed up to 30% improvement in fold coverage for over 74% of the folds, with 52 folds achieving all theoretically possible connections. Although sequences could not be designed between some families, the availability of designed sequences between other families within the fold established the sequence continuum to demonstrate 373 difficult relationships. Ultimately, as a practical and realistic extension, we demonstrate that such protein-like sequences can be ``plugged-into'' routine and generic sequence database searches to empower not only remote homology detection but also fold recognition. Our richly statistically supported findings show that complementary searches in both databases will increase the effectiveness of sequence-based searches in recognizing all homologues sharing a common fold. An efficient, robust and highly enantioselective catalytic desymmetrization of 2,2-disubstituted cyclopentene-1,3-diones is developed via direct vinylogous nucleophilic addition of deconjugated butenolides. A remarkable influence of the secondary catalyst site on the enantioselectivity points towards an intriguing mechanistic scenario, possibly by triggering a change in catalyst conformation.
