El valor psicosocial de la Universidad en Joao Pessoa-Brasil.

Identificar y establecer la relación exiatente entre la sociedada y la Universidad. Como institución socioeducativa su función esencial es caracterzada como instrumento agenciador de valores, por lo tanto, establecer el sistema de valores como mediatizador, a nivel de intercambios, de dicha relación. Estudio sobre la Universidad de Joao Pessoa. Tamaño de la muestra es de 724 sujetos. Las variables consideradas son. El sexo, la edad y el nivel de escolaridad. Value Survey, es un instrumento de medida de valores sociales. La escala de actitudes respecto a la Universidad. Técnicas de muestra por cuotas proporcionales. Se fijó a cada entrevistador un número de entrevistas a realizar. Se fijó para cada entrevistador su itinerario demográfico para la aplicación del instrumento de medida. Se realizó la selección de las zonas urbanas según un sorteo aleatorio. Para establecer la relación entre la sociedad y la Universidad se planteó dos tipos de análisis, a nivel cuantitativo y a nivel cualitativo. El análisis del contexto socio-económico y político en que se inserta la Universidad pone de manifiesto graves problemas que afectan a la sociedad Brasileña. Hay tres fuentes de problemas que caracterizan la crisis de la Universidad, cuyas naturalezas son política, social y económica, en interacción con los factores intelectual y profesional. De forma sintética los problemas se expresan en los siguientes puntos. 1. La democratización de la Universidad. 2. La actuación de la Universidad frente a los problemas nacionales. 3. La valoración socio-profesional económica del título. 4. La acción educativa de la Universidad en su aspecto formacional, a nivel profesional, social y político. 5. La realización de las funciones básicas de la Universidad, enseñanza, investigación y expresión. La sociedad está exigiendo de la Universidad mejor capacitación profesional, sin embargo, los datos ofrecidos en la investigación, no aclaran cómo se debe operacionalizar dicha formación. La Universidad que la sociedad necesita es la siguiente. A nivel de los fines, se evidencia la nesidad de una Universidad dirigida hacia el desarrollo económico, promocionando una mejor formación profesional. A nivel del funcionamiento, se exige perfeccionar la enseñanza ya sea en lo que dice respecto a sus metodologías, así cómo contenidos. Potenciar, también, en su labor educativa, la adquisición de valores intelectuales, políticos y sociales, hacia el ejercicio consciente y responsable de la ciudadanía, particularmente, y de la promoción humana en general. Como conclusión general, se llama la atención hacia el hecho de que, en la sociedad en cuestión, no hay más espacio para una Universidad singular , en lo que se refiere a sus funciones. Es necesario una Universidad pluralista, hondamente integrada y comprometida con el contexto social en que se inserta.

Ense??ando cultura y lengua espa??ola a trav??s del relato 'La asesina de insectos' de Rosa Montero

Se pretende demostrar que la literatura contempor??nea puede ser una herramienta para la ense??anza de la cultura y la lengua espa??olas; para ello se toma como ejemplo el relato 'La asesina de insectos', perteneciente al libro 'Relatos para un fin de milenio' (Barcelona, Plaza y Jan??s, 1998). Por una parte se analiza el aspecto sociol??gico del relato y por otro su explotaci??n did??ctica. Como base te??rica se usa el trabajo de la soci??loga In??s Alberdi 'La nueva familia espa??ola' (Taurus, Madrid, 1999).

Amb el temps, va arribar a ser membre del Comitè de Direcció de “la Caixa”, més endavant va dirigir el Liceu i, després, la Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals. Ha estat presidenta del Consell Social de la UAB. Assegura que no va planificar mai la carrera

Evidence of a genetic bottleneck in an El Nino affected population of South American fur seals, Arctocephalus australis

The South American fur seal, Arctocephalus australis, was one of the earliest otariid seals to be exploited by humans: at least 6000 years ago on the Atlantic coast and 4000 on the Pacific coast of South America. More than 750,000 fur seals were killed in Uruguay until 1991. However, a climatological phenomenon-the severe 1997-1998 El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-was responsible for the decline of 72% Of the Peruvian fur seal population due to starvation as a consequence of warming of sea-surface temperatures and primary productivity reduction. Currently, there is no precise information on global population size or on the species` conservation status. The present study includes the first bottleneck test for the Pacific and Atlantic populations of A. australis based on the analysis of seven microsatellite loci. Genetic bottleneck compromises the evolutionary potential of a population to respond to environmental changes. The perspective becomes even more alarming due to current global warming models that predict stronger and more frequent ENSO events in the future. Our analysis found moderate support for deviation from neutrality-equilibrium for the Pacific population of fur seals and none for the Atlantic population. This difference among population reflects different demographic histories, and is consistent with a greater reduction in population size in the Pacific. Such an event could be a result of the synergic effects of recurrent ENSO events and the anthropogenic impact (sealing and prey overfishing) on this population.

A new species of Potamotrygonocestus Brooks & Thorson, 1976 (Eucestoda : Tetraphyllidea) from Plesiotrygon iwamae Rosa, Castello & Thorson (Mylliobatoidea : Potamotrygonidae) and a redescription of Potamotrygonocestus chaoi Marques, Brooks & Araujo, 2003

Potamotrygonocestus Brooks & Thorson, 1976 is currently represented by six recognised species of tetraphyllidean cestodes inhabiting Neotropical freshwater stingrays. Potamotrygonid stingrays examined to date have included only a single specimen of Plesiotrygon iwamae. Only one species of tetraphyllidean, Potamotrygonocestus chaoi Marques, Brooks & Araujo, 2003, has been described from this host, and this description was based on limited material. New efforts to document the diversity in this host species resulted in the collection of eight additional specimens of P. iwamae, one of these from the upper Rio Solimoes, at Sao Paulo de Olivenca Amazonas during September, 2003, and seven from the Baia do Marajo, Para, during November, 2003. The specimen from the upper Solimoees was found to be infected with P. chaoi. Voucher material from this stingray was used for the redescription of this cestode, which is characterized by strobila 8.78-22.83 mm long and a great number of proglottides, 58-93; the new material provided strobilar length and proglottis counts for complete worms. Potamotrygonocestus marajoara n. sp. is the second species of this genus reported from Plesiotrygon iwamae, although it appears to be restricted to the lower Amazon. This new species resembles P. chaoi in possessing filitriches and blade-like spinitriches on the scolex, cephalic peduncle and cirrus, but differs from other species of the genus in the number of testes, which is 44 on average per proglottis, and by having apical sucker measuring 95-175 mu m in length. Additional data on the distribution and morphology of the microtriches and a detailed description of the female reproductive system are also provided in this study.

Structural Aspects of the Distinct Biochemical Properties of Glutaredoxin 1 and Glutaredoxin 2 from Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Glutaredoxins (Grxs) are small (9-12 kDa) heat-stable proteins that are ubiquitously distributed. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, seven Grx enzymes have been identified. Two of them (yGrx1 and yGrx2) are dithiolic, possessing a conserved Cys-Pro-Tyr-Cys motif. Here, we show that yGrx2 has a specific activity 15 times higher than that of yGrx1, although these two oxidoreductases share 64% identity and 85% similarity with respect to their amino acid sequences. Further characterization of the enzymatic activities through two-substrate kinetics analysis revealed that yGrx2 possesses a lower Km for glutathione and a higher turnover than yGrx1. To better comprehend these biochemical differences, the pK(a) of the N-terminal active-site cysteines (Cys27) of these two proteins and of the yGrx2-C30S mutant were determined. Since the pK(a) values of the yGrx1 and yGix2 Cys27 residues are very similar, these parameters cannot account for the difference observed between their specific activities. Therefore, crystal structures of yGrx2 in the oxidized form and with a glutathionyl mixed disulfide were determined at resolutions of 2.05 and 1.91 angstrom, respectively. Comparisons of yGrx2 structures with the recently determined structures of yGrx1 provided insights into their remarkable functional divergence. We hypothesize that the substitutions of Ser23 and Gln52 in yGrx1 by Ala23 and Glu52 in yGrx2 modify the capability of the active-site C-terminal cysteine to attack the mixed disulfide between the N-terminal active-site cysteine and the glutathione molecule. Mutagenesis studies supported this hypothesis. The observed structural and functional differences between yGrx1 and yGrx2 may reflect variations in substrate specificity. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
