New challenges in mathematics for the european higher education

In this paper we will talk about a math project submitted to the Lifelong Learning Programme. European higher education needs a reform in order to play its full role in the Europe of Knowledge. Modernisation of higher education is necessary in the areas of curricula (Bologna process), funding and governance so that higher education institutions can face the challenges posed by globalisation and contribute more effectively to the training and retraining of the European workforce. On the other hand Mathematics is an essential component of all educational systems. Mathematical literacy is being scrutinized in assessment efforts such as the OCDE Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This showed a low level in Europe. Due to the Bologna Process, which brought several didactical implications for Higher Education (HE) institutions, there is the need of lifelong learning. This evolution is in conflict with the earlier mentioned lack of competencies on basic sciences, such as Mathematics. Forced by this duality, efforts are combined to share expertise in the Math field and the integration of pedagogical methodologies becomes a necessity. Thus, several European countries have proposed an International Project to the Lifelong Learning Programme, Action ERASMUS Modernisation of Higher Education, to make institutions more attractive and more responsive to the needs of the labour market, citizens and society at large. One of the main goals of the project is to attract students to math through high-quality instructional units in an understandable, exciting and attractive way.

Market impact of international sporting and cultural events

We study market reaction to the announcements of the selected country hosting the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the World Football Cup, the European Football Cup and World and Specialized Exhibitions. We generalize previous results analyzing a large number and different types of mega-events, evaluate the effects for winning and losing countries, investigate the determinants of the observed market reaction and control for the ex ante probability of a country being a successful bidder. Average abnormal returns measured at the announcement date and around the event are not significantly different from zero. Further, we find no evidence supporting that industries, that a priori were more likely to extract direct benefits from the event, observe positive significant effects. Yet, when we control for anticipation, the stock price reactions around the announcements are significant.

Matemática na educação Pré-Escolar : esquemas todo-partes

O Singapore Math, método utilizado para o ensino da Matemática em Singapura é, segundo as mais prestigiadas avaliações internacionais, um exemplo bem-sucedido da abordagem «concreto-pictórico-abstrato». Um dos inúmeros procedimentos didáticos são os number bonds (esquemas todo-partes), utilizados no ensino de factos fundamentais relativos à primeira dezena: decomposições, adições e subtrações. Neste artigo, analisaremos o que são, quais as vantagens e a forma de utilização destes esquemas desde a educação pré-escolar.

Matemática na Educação Pré-Escolar : A ordem das dezenas

O nosso sistema numérico é um sistema posicional e de base dez. É posicional porque o valor dos símbolos depende da posição que ocupam. É de base dez por serem necessárias dez unidades de ordem inferior para compor uma de ordem imediatamente superior. Embora consideremos este sistema simples e natural quando o utilizamos no dia a dia, não nos devemos esquecer de como é sofisticado e engenhoso. A humanidade demorou muito a ter um sistema numérico como o que utilizamos presentemente. Houve mesmo épocas em que civilizações avançadas utilizavam diferentes sistemas em simultâneo. Alguns consideravelmente piores do que o atual. Por isso, não podemos almejar que uma criança em idade pré-escolar possa compreender totalmente o sistema decimal. De facto, a temática das ordens numéricas e, em particular, a da ordem das dezenas, é consideravelmente delicada. Neste artigo, exploraremos algumas formas de abordar o conceito de ordem das dezenas junto de crianças a partir dos cinco anos de idade. As ideias apresentadas são inspiradas no Singapore Math, método utilizado para o ensino da matemática inicial em Singapura, um exemplo bem-sucedido da abordagem "concreto-pictórico-abstrato".

Frações (parte I)

A temática das frações é provavelmente o assunto mais delicado no que diz respeito ao ensino da matemática inicial. Por terem múltiplas aplicações, contextos e sentidos, as frações pedem um ensino altamente especializado e esmerado. Há que modelar de forma cuidadosa o conceito de fração, fasear e ordenar os nós conceptuais ao longo dos anos e dosear o caráter abstrato/concreto dos exemplos e atividades. Muito se testou, teorizou e escreveu sobre esta temática. Este trabalho consiste num resumo alargado sobre o ensino das frações, documentado em literatura especializada e ilustrado através de exemplos concretos retirados de manuais do Singapore Math, um dos mais cotados métodos de ensino do mundo.

Desenvolvimento do sistema de controlo de um braço robotizado e respetiva interface com o utilizador

A robótica tem evoluído de forma significativa nos últimos anos e passa a ser indispensável em várias aplicações nas áreas da engenharia, aeronáutica, medicina, entre outras. O estado da arte do presente trabalho está dividido em duas partes, uma que aborda vários aspetos relacionados com a robótica e outra com os aspetos da fundamentação matemática por de trás da robótica, porque para controlar o robô é necessário implementar expressões matemáticas para o poder controlar. Neste trabalho é apresentado um sistema de controlo do braço robótico MENTOR e o desenvolvimento de uma interface para o utilizador. Para o controlo do braço robótico foi necessário calcular a cinemática direta e inversa, para que se possa obter os ângulos das juntas para uma dada posição ou qual é a posição final do braço robótico para um valor das juntas. O sistema é bastante flexível e foi desenvolvido para ser utilizado essencialmente para aprendizagem de robótica, podendo no entanto ser utilizado em outras aplicações.

Professions and inter-disciplinary teamwork in socially embedded bureaucracies: Synthesis and hypotheses on the impact of informal and formal organization

In order to maximize their productivity, inter-disciplinary multi-occupation teams of professionals need to maximize inter-occupational cooperation in team decision making. Cooperation, however, is challenged by status anxiety over organizational careers and identity politics among team members who differ by ethnicity-race, gender, religion, nativity, citizenship status, etc. The purpose of this paper is to develop hypotheses about how informal and formal features of bureaucracy influence the level of inter-occupation cooperation achieved by socially diverse, multi-occupation work teams of professionals in bureaucratic work organizations. The 18 hypotheses, which are developed with the heuristic empirical case of National Science Foundation-sponsored university school partnerships in math and science curriculum innovation in the United States, culminate in the argument that cooperation can be realized as a synthesis of tensions between informal and formal features of bureaucracy in the form of participatory, high performance work systems.

A new horizon for online teaching and learning

The Polytechnic Institute of Oporto (IPP), which has a solid history of online education and innovation through the use of technology, has been particularly interested and focused on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) developments. The aim of this paper is to present the whole process from initial discussions to completion of the “Mathematics Without Limits” MOOC Project that exists in IPP and also to contribute for a change in the way as teaching and learning Mathematics is seen and practiced nowadays. In 2013, IPP developed its own platform, which gave us the opportunity to explore new educational techniques as a pedagogical resource as well as to enhance students’ motivation, through a set of interactive materials at their disposal, totally adapted to their needs. Students lack of motivation is mainly justified by their weak Math preparation, poor consolidated basis on the subject and different backgrounds of the students. To tackle this issue and based on our Math online courses teaching experience, we decided to create short duration MOOC, expecting to aid retention of students and also to reverse the path of students giving up on Math by giving them a friendly way of managing their own learning commitment. We also think that this MOOC will be a good approach to level out some math skills among freshmen.
