We explore a generalisation of the L´evy fractional Brownian field on the Euclidean space based on replacing the Euclidean norm with another norm. A characterisation result for admissible norms yields a complete description of all self-similar Gaussian random fields with stationary increments. Several integral representations of the introduced random fields are derived. In a similar vein, several non-Euclidean variants of the fractional Poisson field are introduced and it is shown that they share the covariance structure with the fractional Brownian field and converge to it. The shape parameters of the Poisson and Brownian variants are related by convex geometry transforms, namely the radial pth mean body and the polar projection transforms.

We study Hausdorff and Minkowski dimension distortion for images of generic affine subspaces of Euclidean space under Sobolev and quasiconformal maps. For a supercritical Sobolev map f defined on a domain in RnRn, we estimate from above the Hausdorff dimension of the set of affine subspaces parallel to a fixed m-dimensional linear subspace, whose image under f has positive HαHα measure for some fixed α>mα>m. As a consequence, we obtain new dimension distortion and absolute continuity statements valid for almost every affine subspace. Our results hold for mappings taking values in arbitrary metric spaces, yet are new even for quasiconformal maps of the plane. We illustrate our results with numerous examples.

A carpet is a metric space homeomorphic to the Sierpiński carpet. We characterize, within a certain class of examples, non-self-similar carpets supporting curve families of nontrivial modulus and supporting Poincaré inequalities. Our results yield new examples of compact doubling metric measure spaces supporting Poincaré inequalities: these examples have no manifold points, yet embed isometrically as subsets of Euclidean space.

Greedy routing can be used in mobile ad-hoc networks as geographic routing protocol. This paper proposes to use greedy routing also in overlay networks by positioning overlay nodes into a multi-dimensional Euclidean space. Greedy routing can only be applied when a routing decision makes progress towards the final destination. Our proposed overlay network is built such that there will be always progress at each forwarding node. This is achieved by constructing at each node a so-called nearest neighbor convex set (NNCS). NNCSs can be used for various applications such as multicast routing, service discovery and Quality-of-Service routing. NNCS has been compared with Pastry, another topology-aware overlay network. NNCS has superior relative path stretches indicating the optimality of a path.

We prove that any isotropic positive definite function on the sphere can be written as the spherical self-convolution of an isotropic real-valued function. It is known that isotropic positive definite functions on d-dimensional Euclidean space admit a continuous derivative of order [(d − 1)/2]. We show that the same holds true for isotropic positive definite functions on spheres and prove that this result is optimal for all odd dimensions.

Minimal surfaces in Euclidean space provide examples of possible non-compact horizon geometries and topologies in asymptotically flat space-time. On the other hand, the existence of limiting surfaces in the space-time provides a simple mechanism for making these configurations compact. Limiting surfaces appear naturally in a given space-time by making minimal surfaces rotate but they are also inherent to plane wave or de Sitter space-times in which case minimal surfaces can be static and compact. We use the blackfold approach in order to scan for possible black hole horizon geometries and topologies in asymptotically flat, plane wave and de Sitter space-times. In the process we uncover several new configurations, such as black helicoids and catenoids, some of which have an asymptotically flat counterpart. In particular, we find that the ultraspinning regime of singly-spinning Myers-Perry black holes, described in terms of the simplest minimal surface (the plane), can be obtained as a limit of a black helicoid, suggesting that these two families of black holes are connected. We also show that minimal surfaces embedded in spheres rather than Euclidean space can be used to construct static compact horizons in asymptotically de Sitter space-times.

We show the existence of free dense subgroups, generated by two elements, in the holomorphic shear and overshear group of complex-Euclidean space and extend this result to the group of holomorphic automorphisms of Stein manifolds with the density property, provided there exists a generalized translation. The conjugation operator associated to this generalized translation is hypercyclic on the topological space of holomorphic automorphisms.
