Tässä diplomityössä tutkittiin painetun paperin ja siitä fenoliformaldehydihartsilla impregnoimalla valmistetun pinnoituskalvon UV-stabiilisuuden parantamis-mahdollisuuksia. Työn kirjallisuusosassa käsitellään painetun pinnoituskalvon valmistusprosessia ja painatuksen UV-valonkestoon vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Painovärin pigmentti, sen määrä ja käsittely, painovärin sideaine sekä fenoliformaldehydihartsi ja sen lisäaineet vaikuttavat pinnoitetun betonoimisvanerin säänkesto-ominaisuuksiin. Erilaisilla epäorgaanisilla valkoisilla pigmenteillä ja kidemuodoilla on erilainen UV-valonkesto ja taitekerroin. Päällystämällä titaanidioksidi esimerkiksi alumiini- tai zirkoniumoksideilla sen UV-valonkestoa voidaan parantaa merkittävästi. UV-hajoaminen voidaan havaita painetun pinnoitteen liituuntumisena. Liituuntumista voidaan pitää veden ja hapen välisenä reaktiona, jota titaanidioksidi ja UV-säteily katalysoivat. Sen takia myös muiden valkoisten epäorgaanisten pigmenttien ominaisuuksia ja käyttöä selvitettiin. Kokeissa käytettiin yhdeksää eri painoväriä, kahta eri paksuista paperia ja kahta eri tyyppistä hartsia. Painovärejä ohennettiin vedellä ja paperin painopuolta vaihdeltiin. Kaikissa painatuksissa käytettiin kolmea eri rasterointiasteen laattaa, jolloin painovärin määrää paperissa saatiin vähennettyä. Painetuista papereista mitattiin densiteetti, värimäärä, pisara-absorptio vedellä ja kontaktikulma hartsilla. Myös painovärin tunkeumaa selvitettiin paperin poikkileikeistä tehtyjen SEM-kuvien avulla. Painetut paperit impregnoitiin fenoliformaldehydihartsilla kalvoksi. Pinnoituskalvot puristettiin vanerin pinnalle laboratoriopuristimella. Koekappaleet altistettiin UV-valolle, sateelle ja pakkaselle sääkaapissa 400 h ajan, mikä vastaa noin 1,5 vuotta ulkona Suomen oloissa. Kappaleista mitattiin kiilto, värinmuutos ja liituuntuminen. Pinnoitteen liituuntumista tapahtui vähiten niissä koepisteissä, joissa painatus oli tehty 30 % rasteroidulla laatallaSäänkestävä TiO2 osoittautui hyväksi, mutta myös ZnO-pigmentillä saatiin hyviä tuloksia. ZnO-koepisteessä liituuntumisreaktio ei ole niin voimakkaasti katalysoitu kuin TiO2-koepisteissä. Paksun paperin painatuspuolella näytti olevan merkitystä säänkestoon. Huopapuolelle painettuna pinnoitteen liituuntuminen oli vähäisempää

The plane wave electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of DC sputtered Ni79Fe16Mo5 and copper layers were studied according to ASTM D 4935-89 on frequency range of 50 MHz – 2.5 GHz and RF magnetic shielding effectiveness by shielded magnetic loop probes. Results show that Ni79Fe16Mo5 provides better RF magnetic shielding above the layer thickness of approximately 120 nm. Copper provides better plane wave shielding effectiveness. The effect of shield internal interfaces was studied by depositing thin multilayer structures with and without a dielectric spacer layer.

This work aimed to find out the suitability of foam as medium in application of thin liquid films. This consists of research over phenomena related to foam physics and behaviour. Solutions and mixtures to be foamed, foaming agents, foam generation and application methods were evaluated. Over the evaluated solutions and mixtures coating paste and CMC did not foam well. Latex and PVA solutions were foamable and the best solution for foam use was starch. PVA and casein can be used as foaming agents, but the best results were achieved with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). SDS works well with starch solutions producing fine and stable foam. Foaming was done with simple mixers where pressurized air was fed to the solution. The foaming works fine when enough shear force is used together with sufficient foaming agent concentration. Foam application with curtain, rod and cylinder methods with a gap between the application device and paper were not usable because of high coating amount. Coating amounts were smallest with the blade method which achieved 0.9 g/m2 starch layer. Although some strength decrease was expected because of the foaming agent, it dit not have significant effect. The targeted coating amount of 0.5 g/m2 was not achieved due to the limitations with the methods. More precise foam application methods are needed. Continuous foam generation and feed to the paper surface with controllable device such as application teeth could improve the results.

Asthma and allergy are common diseases and their prevalence is increasing. One of the hypotheses that explains this trend is exposure to inhalable chemicals such as traffi c-related air pollution. Epidemiological research supports this theory, as a correlation between environmental chemicals and allergic respiratory diseases has been found. In addition to ambient airborne particles, one may be exposed to engineered nanosized materials that are actively produced due to their favorable physico-chemical properties compared to their bulk size counterparts. On the cellular level, improper activity of T helper (Th) cells has been connected to allergic reactions. Th cells can differentiate into functionally different effector subsets, which are identifi ed according to their characteristic cytokine profi les resulting in specifi c ability to communicate with other cells. Th2 cells activate humoral immunity and stimulate eradication of extracellular pathogens. However, persistent predominance of Th2 cells is involved in a development of number of allergic diseases. The cytokine environment at the time of antigen recognition is the major factor determining the polarization of a naïve Th cell. Th2 cell differentiation is initiated by IL4, which signals via transcription factor STAT6. Although the importance of this pathway has been evaluated in the mouse studies, the signaling components involved have been largely unknown. The aim of this thesis was to identify molecules, which are under the control of IL4 and STAT6 in Th cells. This was done by using system-level analysis of STAT6 target genes at genome, mRNA and protein level resulting in identifi cation of various genes previously not connected to Th2 cell phenotype acquisition. In the study, STAT6-mediated primary and secondary target genes were dissection from each other and a detailed transcriptional kinetics of Th2 cell polarization of naïve human CD4+ T cells was collected. Integration of these data revealed the hierarchy of molecular events that mediates the differentiation towards Th2 cell phenotype. In addition, the results highlighted the importance of exploiting proteomics tools to complement the studies on STAT6 target genes identifi ed through transcriptional profi ling. In the last subproject, the effects of the exposure with ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles was analyzed in Jurkat T cell line and in primary human monocyte-derived macrophages and dendritic cells to evaluate their toxicity and potential to cause infl ammation. Identifi cation of ZnO-derived gene expression showed that the same nanoparticles may elicit markedly distinctive responses in different cell types, thus underscoring the need for unbiased profi ling of target genes and pathways affected. The results gave additional proof that the cellular response to nanosized ZnO is due to leached Zn2+ ions. The approach used in ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticle study demonstrated the value of assessing nanoparticle responses through a toxicogenomics approach. The increased knowledge of Th2 cell signaling will hopefully reveal new therapeutic nodes and eventually improve our possibilities to prevent and tackle allergic infl ammatory diseases.

The main objective of the present study was to verify the approach on starch-gelatin blending for the paperboard coating formulations with enhanced barrier and mechanical properties. Based on that, another objective was to find out, how the approach will function with wood-based polysaccharides (CMC, EHEC and HPC) by analyzing their barrier properties and convertibility. The last objective was to find out, if pigments can be used in the composition of polysaccharide-protein blends without causing any negative effect on stated properties. The whole process chain of the barrier coating development was studied in the research. The methodology applied included pilot-scale coating and converting trials for the evaluation of mechanical properties of obtained coatings, namely their exposure to cracking with the loss of barrier properties. The results obtained indicated that the combination of starch with gelatin, in fact, improves the grease barrier properties and flexibility of starch-based coatings, thereby confirming the offered approach. The similar results were obtained for CMC, exhibited elevated barrier properties and surface coverage, proving that the approach also functions with wood-based polysaccharides. The introduction of equal amounts of talc gave various effects at different gelatin dosages on barrier properties of wood-based polysaccharides. Mainly, the elevation of grease barrier properties was observed. The convertibility of talc-filled coatings was not sufficient.
