This research focused on indicators with the aim of recognizing the main characters of this particular tool. The planning and use of Finnish sustainability indicators for natural resource management was examined as well as the experiences about the international sets of agri-environmental indicators were described. In both cases, the actual utilization of information was found to be quite minimal. Indicators have succeeded in bringing more of environmental information into the processes of decision making, but information has not been directly shifted into the actions of natural resource management. The concept of technical use of indicators was presented and considered as a possible explanation for the failures of information transfer and communication. Traditionally indicators have been used in order to recognize and describe the performance of certain system; to provide clear operative message for the actors. In policy planning, the situation is essentially different. We may lack both the jointly shared and accepted objectives of development as well the reliable and representative methods for measuring the issue under attention. Therefore, the technical orientation of using indicators may cause several problems at the policy forum. The study identified the risks of 1) reduced informative basis of decision-making, 2) narrowed approach of interpreting the data, 3) the focus on the issues that already are best documented and provides the most representative data series, and 4) the risks of losing the systemic viewpoints while focusing on measurable details of the system. Technical use of indicators may also result the excessive focus on information while being detached from the actions. With sustainability indicators, the major emphasis was indeed paid with producing information while the reality of agricultural practices was left mostly unaffected. Therefore, the essential process of social learning, where actions and producing of relevant information are alternating was neither realized. This study underlines the complexity of information transfer, mutual communication and the learning of new practices. Besides the information and measurable number people also need personal experiences and interesting stories, which make them to understand the meaning of information in their own lives. Particularly important this is for thechildren, who are studying for to be the future decision-makers of food system; in production as well as the in consumption of food. Numbers will be useful tools of management as soon there exists the awareness of the direction, where to strive for.

Sosiaali- ja terveysministeriön 2006 julkaiseman vanhustyön ja geriatrisen lääkehoidon kehittämistä koskevan selvityksen yhtenä tärkeänä huolenaiheena oli iäkkäiden lääkehoidon useat epäkohdat, kuten iäkkäitä hoitavien hoitajien lääkeosaamiseen liittyvät puutteet ja ongelmat. Yksi keino parantaa iäkkäitä hoitavien eri tahojen lääkehoito-osaamista on täydennyskoulutus, johon kaikilla sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollon ammattiryhmillä on oikeus ja velvollisuus. Täydennyskoulutuksella pystytään myös kehittämään organisaatioiden toimintaa ja tuottamaan uusia, parempia palveluita. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin Lohjan, Siuntion, Inkoon ja Karjalohjan muodostaman sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollon yhteistoiminta-alueen LOSTin kotihoidon yksiköiden iäkkäiden lääkehoitoihin liittyviä koulutustarpeita. Tämän tutkimuksen avulla syvennettiin samalle tutkimusryhmälle tehdyn kyselytutkimuksen tuloksia. Tutkimusaineistona käytettiin LOST-alueen kotihoidon yksiköiden hoitajille (n=150) farmaseutin lopputyönä tehtyä kyselyaineistoa sekä työntekijöille (n=6) ja esimiehille (n=6) tehtyjä erillisiä ryhmäkeskusteluja. Lisäksi näkökulman laajentamiseksi ja moniammatillisuuden korostamiseksi aineistona käytettiin kotihoidon asiakkaita hoitavien lääkärien (n=4) teemahaastatteluja. Kyselyaineistosta analysoitiin erikseen sairaanhoitajien, lähihoitajien ja kodinhoitajien koulutustarpeet. Samat asiat nousivat esille kunkin ammattiryhmän tuloksissa. Tärkeimpinä lääkehoito-osaamiseen liittyvinä teoreettisina koulutettavina asioina kyselystä nousivat esille iäkkäiden farmakokinetiikka ja lääkkeiden käyttöön liittyvät erityispiirteet, lääkkeiden vaikutukset, lääkkeiden haittavaikutukset sekä lääkkeiden yhteisvaikutukset ja yhteensopivuus. Lisäksi teoreettisista taidoista nousi hoitotyön etiikkaan liittyvät tarkkuus ja huolellisuus työssä. Käytännön taidoista tärkeimpinä koulutettavina aiheina kyselystä nousivat asiakkaiden lääkehoidon ja voinnin seuranta, lääkkeiden jakaminen sekä lääkkeiden annosteluun liittyen se, että annostellaan oikeaa lääkettä ja vahvuutta, oikea annos ja oikeaan aikaan sekä oikeat antotavat. Ryhmäkeskusteluista ja lääkärien teemahaastatteluista haettiin syvempää ymmärrystä kyselyn tuloksiin. Yksi tärkeimmistä tämän laadullisen tutkimuksen löydöksistä oli kotihoidon yhteistyöhön liittyvät epäkohdat. Lääkehoitojen toteuttamista ja seurantaa voitaisiin tulosten perusteella parantaa lääkärien ja kotihoidon hoitajien yhteisellä koulutuksella. Tärkeimpiä sairauksia tai oireita, joihin hoitajat toivoisivat yhteisiä toimintakäytäntöjä, ovat diabetes, sydän- ja verisuonisairaudet, kipu, muistisairaudet sekä psyykensairaudet. Lisäksi koulutusaiheiksi tutkimuksesta nousivat iäkkäiden lääkehoidon erityispiirteet, lääkkeiden antoreitit ja lääkemuodot. Kyselyn sekä ryhmäkeskustelujen ja lääkärien teemahaastattelujen tuloksista tehtiin lopuksi synteesi, jonka lopputuloksena LOST-alueen kotihoidon hoitohenkilöstölle sekä kotihoidon lääkäreille koottiin yhteinen tarvelähtöinen täydennyskoulutussuunnitelma. Suunnitelma tehtiin aineistosta nousseiden koulutusaiheiden pohjalta, eikä siihen lisätty aiheita tutkimuksen ulkopuolelta.

Tämän tutkielman tutkimusongelmana on operatiivisen tilaus-toimitusprosessin ominaispiirteiden nimeäminen sekä kyseisen prosessin kehittäminen sesonkityyppisessä liiketoiminnassa. Tutkimuksen apuna käytetään prosessin uudelleensuunnittelun keskeisiä teorioita. Tutkielman tavoitteena on luoda viitekehys, jota voidaan soveltaa kehitettäessä tai uudelleen suunniteltaessa tilaus-toimitusprosessia erityisesti sesonkityyppisen liiketoiminnan parissa. Empiirisessä osuudessa testattiin viitekehyksen soveltuvuutta käytäntöön todellisen kohdetapauksen avulla. Tässä tutkimuksessa kehitettävänä oli toimeksiantajayrityksen Oyj Stockmann Abp:n ja sen yhteistyökumppanin Itella Logistics Oy:n välinen tilaus-toimitusprosessi. Useat organisaatiot kehittävät toimintojaan vain omista näkökulmistaan. Tämä johtaa siihen, että toimitusketjun jokainen osa optimoi vain omia toimintojaan ja lopulta asiakkaan tarpeet alkavat unohtua eikä ketjun toimintaa enää kehitetä asiakaslähtöisesti. Tästä syystä tilaus- ja toimitusprosessin kehittäminen tulee perustaa asiakaslähtöiseen prosessin analysointiin. Tässä tutkimuksessa painopistealueita ovat asiakkaalle arvoa tuottavat ja tuottamattomat toiminnot sekä informaation välityksen varmentaminen kaikilla prosessin tasoilla. Seikkaperäinen analysointi vaatii poikkeuksetta prosessin mallintamista ja tämän tueksi laadittavaa prosessia selittävää käsikirjaa. Teoreettisena lopputuloksena on tässä tutkimuksessa syntynyt viitekehys, joka perustuu näihin lähtökohtiin. Empiirisessä osassa todettiin, että tilaus-toimitusprosessia voidaan tehostaa minimoimalla useiden tietojärjestelmien aiheuttamaa ylimääräistä työntekoa. Käytännössä ongelmat ilmenivät järjestelmien rajapinnoissa, jonka takia useat tilaus-toimitusprosessiin liittyvät transaktiot oli syötettävä järjestelmään erikseen. Manuaalinen ja ylimääräinen työsuoritus lisäävät virheiden syntymisen mahdollisuutta, kuluttavat resursseja sekä lisäävät ihmisten työmäärää. Tutkimuksen kirjoittajan näkemyksen mukaan ihanne olisi, jos kaikki transaktiot tehtäisiin ainoastaan kerran yhdessä järjestelmässä. Tämä vaatii kuitenkin informaation vaihdannan lisäämistä, operatiivisten toimintojen uudelleen suunnittelua ja yhteistyön lisäämistä prosessin eri tasoilla.

Tupakointi on yleensä nuoruudessa alkava riippuvuutta aiheuttava tapa, jonka terveysvaikutukset näkyvät vasta myöhemmin. Tupakoinnin ehkäisypolitiikan ja tupakoinnin ehkäisyohjelmien eli interventioiden kohdistaminen nuoriin on olennaista, koska suurin osa tupakoitsijoista aloittaa tupakoinnin nuorena. Vuonna 1997 Helsingissä toteutettiin eurooppalainen koulu- ja yhteisötason tupakoinnin ehkäisyohjelma (ESFA). Intervention teoreettisena viitekehyksenä toimi ASE -malli (asenne, sosiaalinen vaikuttaminen ja pystyvyys -malli). ASE -malli juontaa juurensa Fishbeinin & Ajzenin perustellun toiminnan teoriasta. Suomessa kokeellinen interventio-ohjelma toteutettiin syksystä 1998 kevääseen 2001 koko yläasteen kestävänä pitkittäistutkimuksena. Helsingin yläkouluista valittiin satunnaisesti 13 ohjelmakouluiksi, joissa toteutettiin interventio ja 14 koulua toimi vertailukouluina, joissa toteutettiin normaalia terveysvalistusta. Ohjelma- ja vertailukoulujen oppilaille tehtiin vuosien 1998–2001 aikana neljä laajaa lomakekyselyä, joista käytettiin tässä tutkimuksessa kolmen ensimmäisen vastauksia. Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkittiin sitä, että pystyttiinkö interventiolla vaikuttamaan tupakoinnin aloittamiseen, nuorten tupakointi-intentioon, sosiaalisiin normeihin, vahvistamaan kielteisiä asenteita tupakointia kohtaan, torjumaan sosiaalista painetta ja vahvistamaan pystyvyyttä kieltäytyä tupakasta. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin sitä, polarisoituivatko asenteet enemmän ohjelmaryhmässä kuin vertailuryhmässä. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin muuttujien yhteyksien tutkimisessa korrelaatioanalyysiä ja muuttujien keskiarvojen muuttumista intervention aikana tutkittiin useampisuuntaisen toistettujen mittausten varianssianalyysillä. Intervention aikana nuorten keski-ikä oli 13,8–15,8 vuotta. Intervention lähtötasolla ohjelma- ja vertailukoulujen välillä ei ollut eroja tutkituissa muuttujissa. Intervention aikana tutkituissa muuttujissa tapahtui muutos tupakoinnin kannalta huonompaan suuntaan. Yhdestätoista muuttujasta vain kahdessa muutos oli vähäisempää ohjelmakoulussa, ja lisäksi saatiin muutos kahdessa muuttujassa tytöillä. Lievempi muutos saatiin aikaan ohjelmakoulussa tupakoinnin hyödyt -asenteissa ja sosiaaliset normit vertaiset. Tytöillä muutos saatiin aikaan sosiaalisissa normeissa perhe ja opettaja sekä sosiaalisessa paineessa perhe ja opettaja. Kysymykseen intervention mekanismista ei kuitenkaan saatu vastausta, koska koulujen välille ei syntynyt eroa, mitä selittää, eikä interventiolla pystytty vaikuttamaan intentiota edeltäviin psykososiaalisiin tekijöihin, eli ei ollut tuloksia, mistä edetä. Asenteiden hajonta oli lähes yhtä suurta sekä ohjelma- että vertailukoulussa, joten interventio ei polarisoinut asenteita ohjelmakoulussa. Interventiolla pystyttiin vähentämään tupakoinnin aloittamista ohjelmakoulussa, mutta vaikutus ei tapahtunut teorian mukaan odotettujen kognitiivisten tekijöiden kautta. Tupakointi riskikäyttäytymisenä voi olla nuorilla prototyyppi-käyttäytymishalukkuusmallin mukaan myös ei-intentionaalista, ja siten sosiokognitiivisilla käsitteillä ei voida selittää täysi nuorten tupakoinnin aloittamista.

Tämän pro gradu-tutkielman tarkoitus on tutkia, miten reilun kaupan banaania tuottavan El Guabon pienten banaaninviljelijöiden järjestön Asoguabon reilun turismin projekti on rakennettu. Projektin muotoutumista tutkitaan tässä työssä kahdesta eri näkökulmasta: siitä, miksi ja miten Asoguabo on monipuolistanut viljelystä turismiin, sekä siitä, millainen kuva projektista on rakennettu markkinoinnin kautta ja miten reilun kaupan mainonnasta tuttuja ilmiöitä on hyödynnetty reilun turismin rakentamisessa. Tutkielman teoreettisena taustana on maaseudun muutoksia tarkasteleva uuden ruraliteetin käsite. Turismi on viime vuosikymmenten aikana muuttunut, ja matkailijat etsivät yhä enemmän aitoja ja autenttisia matkailukokemuksia. Samanaikaisesti turismia on tuotteistettu korostamalla sen tiettyjä, kestävän kehityksen mukaisia piirteitä, ja erityisesti kehittyvissä maissa turismia markkinoidaan usein vaihtoehtoisena, yhteisöpohjaisena tai ekoturismina. Reilu turismi on uutena käsitteenä tullut mukaan tähän laajaan kirjoon, ja tämä tutkielma käsitteleekin Asoguabon projektia nimenomaan reilun turismin näkökulmasta. Tämä tutkielma on tapaustutkimus Asoguabon turismiprojektista, ja pohjautuu kuukauden pituiseen kenttätyöhön Ecuadorissa tammikussa 2010 sekä kirjoittajan aiempiin kokemuksiin Asoguabosta. Aineisto koostuu 21 puoli-strukturoidusta laadullisesta haastattelusta kuudentoista informantin kanssa, joista suurin osa oli hyvin läheisesti tekemisissä projektin kanssa. Tämän lisäksi aineistonkeruussa on käytetty havainnointia sekä projektin markkinointimateriaalien sisällönanalyysia. Tutkielma osoittaa reilun turismin projektin sisältävän monia haasteita ennen kuin se voi saavuttaa tavoitteensa tuottaa lisätuloja Asoguabon toimintaan. Tutkimushetkellä projekti hyödytti suoraan pääasiassa muutamia järjestön viljelijöitä, lähinnä niitä, jotka toimivat projektissa oppaina. Nämä oppaat hyötyvät projektista saamalla pieniä lisätuloja, kasvattamalla sosiaalista pääomaansa, sekä saamalla mahdollisuuden oppia muun muassa osallistumalla kursseille. Tutkimuksen keskeiset tulokset osoittavat myös, kuinka vuorovaikutus-ongelmat projektin eri toimijoiden välillä vaikeuttavat tiedonkulkua ja täten reilun turismin toimintaa. Nämä ongelmat myös lisäävät epätietoisuutta Asoguabon muiden viljelijöiden parissa. Lisäksi tutkimus osoittaa, kuinka reilun turismin projektin mainonnassa käytetään osittain samoja keinoja kuin reilun kaupan tuotteiden mainonnassa, joskin tuottajia on kuvattu mainosmateriaaleissa yllättävän vähän ja pääosassa ovat usein eurooppalaiset turistit.

Cliffordin algebrat ovat äärellisulotteisia reaali- tai kompleksikertoimisia algebroja, jotka yleistävät kvaterneja ja kompleksilukuja. Näitä algebroja on kutsuttu myös geometrisiksi algebroiksi. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan analyysiä Cliffordin algebroilla ja sen sovelluksia. Analyysi tässä tarkoittaa sitä, että tarkastellaan Cliffordin algebraarvoisia funktioita, jotka omaavat erikseen määriteltyjä sileysominaisuuksia. Sovelluskohteina ovat osittaisdifferentiaaliyhtälöt ja reuna-arvo-ongelmat. Menetelmät ovat klassisia kompleksianalyysin menetelmiä. Tutkielmassa esitellään Cliffordin algebrat yleisille neliömuodollisille avaruuksille. Keskeisiä algebrallisia ominaisuuksia ovat Frobeniuksen teoreema ja perusoperaatiot. On yleisesti tunnettua, että kvaterneilla voidaan esittää kolmiulotteisen ja neljäulotteisen avaruuden rotaatiot. Tutkielmassa esitellään, miten Cliffordin ryhmiä, jotka ovat Cliffordin algebrojen osajoukkoja, käytetään useamman ulottuvuuden rotaatioiden esityksessä. Toinen sovelluskohde on Möbius-kuvausten esittäminen Vahlenin matriiseilla. Tutkielman toisessa osiossa määritellään monogeeniset funktiot erään Diracin operaattorin nollaratkaisuina. Monogeenisten funktioiden pääominaisuus on Cauchyn integraalikaava. Välittömiä seurauksia ovat esimerkiksi potenssisarjakehitelmät, analyyttisuus, Liuvillen teoreema ja muut klassisen kompleksianalyysin tuloksien yleistykset. Toisaalta monet kompleksianalyysin tulokset eivät yleisty. Esimerkiksi monogeenisten funktioiden tulo ei ole yleisesti ottaen monogeeninen. Potenssisarjat voidaan esittää monogeenisten polynomeiden avulla. Esitämme kannan monogeenisten polynomien avaruudelle käyttäen CK-laajennusta. Cauchyn ytimen ominaisuuksien avulla tarkastelemme Diracin operaattorin reuna-arvo-ongelmia ja nk. D-ongelmaa. Käyttäen Rungen lauseen yleistystä osoitamme D-ongelman yleisen ratkaistavuuden. Toisaalta reuna-arvo-ongelman ratkaistavuus karakterisoidaan käyttäen Cauchyn ytimen reuna-arvo-ominaisuuksia ja hyppyrelaatioita. Keskeinen sovellus tuloksille on aikaharmonisen Maxwellin yhtälön reuna-arvo-ongelmien tarkastelu. Mielenkiintoista on myös, miten Diracin operaattori linearisoi Laplacen operaattorin ja aalto-operaattorin. Toisaalta Diracin operaattorin avulla voidaan ilmaista Maxwellin yhtälöt tiiviissä muodossa. Muita tuloksia tutkielmassa ovat meromorfifunktioiden määritelmä ja Mittag-Lefflerin lause. Tutkielman lopuksi tarkastellaan lyhyesti harmonisten funktioiden ja monogeenisten funktioiden suhdetta. Jokainen harmoninen funktio on jonkin monogeenisen funktion reaaliosa. Tosin monogeeninen funktio ei ole yksikäsitteisesti määrätty sen reaaliosan avulla.

Embryonic stem cells offer potentially a ground-breaking insight into health and diseases and are said to offer hope in discovering cures for many ailments unimaginable few years ago. Human embryonic stem cells are undifferentiated, immature cells that possess an amazing ability to develop into almost any body cell such as heart muscle, bone, nerve and blood cells and possibly even organs in due course. This remarkable feature, enabling embryonic stem cells to proliferate indefinitely in vitro (in a test tube), has branded them as a so-called miracle cure . Their potential use in clinical applications provides hope to many sufferers of debilitating and fatal medical conditions. However, the emergence of stem cell research has resulted in intense debates about its promises and dangers. On the one hand, advocates hail its potential, ranging from alleviating and even curing fatal and debilitating diseases such as Parkinson s, diabetes, heart ailments and so forth. On the other hand, opponents decry its dangers, drawing attention to the inherent risks of human embryo destruction, cloning for research purposes and reproductive cloning eventually. Lately, however, the policy battles surrounding human embryonic stem cell innovation have shifted from being a controversial research to scuffles within intellectual property rights. In fact, the ability to obtain patents represents a pivotal factor in the economic success or failure of this new biotechnology. Although, stem cell patents tend to more or less satisfy the standard patentability requirements, they also raise serious ethical and moral questions about the meaning of the exclusions on ethical or moral grounds as found in European and to an extent American and Australian patent laws. At present there is a sort of a calamity over human embryonic stem cell patents in Europe and to an extent in Australia and the United States. This in turn has created a sense of urgency to engage all relevant parties in the discourse on how best to approach patenting of this new form of scientific innovation. In essence, this should become a highly favoured patenting priority. To the contrary, stem cell innovation and its reliance on patent protection risk turmoil, uncertainty, confusion and even a halt on not only stem cell research but also further emerging biotechnology research and development. The patent system is premised upon the fundamental principle of balance which ought to ensure that the temporary monopoly awarded to the inventor equals that of the social benefit provided by the disclosure of the invention. Ensuring and maintaining this balance within the patent system when patenting human embryonic stem cells is of crucial contemporary relevance. Yet, the patenting of human embryonic stem cells raises some fundamental moral, social and legal questions. Overall, the present approach of patenting human embryonic stem cell related inventions is unsatisfactory and ineffective. This draws attention to a specific question which provides for a conceptual framework for this work. That question is the following: how can the investigated patent offices successfully deal with patentability of human embryonic stem cells? This in turn points at the thorny issue of application of the morality clause in this field. In particular, the interpretation of the exclusions on ethical or moral grounds as found in Australian, American and European legislative and judicial precedents. The Thesis seeks to compare laws and legal practices surrounding patentability of human embryonic stem cells in Australia and the United States with that of Europe. By using Europe as the primary case study for lessons and guidance, the central goal of the Thesis then becomes the determination of the type of solutions available to Europe with prospects to apply such to Australia and the United States. The Dissertation purports to define the ethical implications that arise with patenting human embryonic stem cells and intends to offer resolutions to the key ethical dilemmas surrounding patentability of human embryonic stem cells and other morally controversial biotechnology inventions. In particular, the Thesis goal is to propose a functional framework that may be used as a benchmark for an informed discussion on the solution to resolving ethical and legal tensions that come with patentability of human embryonic stem cells in Australian, American and European patent worlds. Key research questions that arise from these objectives and which continuously thread throughout the monograph are: 1. How do common law countries such as Australia and the United States approach and deal with patentability of human embryonic stem cells in their jurisdictions? These practices are then compared to the situation in Europe as represented by the United Kingdom (first two chapters), the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Patent Office decisions (Chapter 3 onwards) in order to obtain a full picture of the present patenting procedures on the European soil. 2. How are ethical and moral considerations taken into account at patent offices investigated when assessing patentability of human embryonic stem cell related inventions? In order to assess this part, the Thesis evaluates how ethical issues that arise with patent applications are dealt with by: a) Legislative history of the modern patent system from its inception in 15th Century England to present day patent laws. b) Australian, American and European patent offices presently and in the past, including other relevant legal precedents on the subject matter. c) Normative ethical theories. d) The notion of human dignity used as the lowest common denominator for the interpretation of the European morality clause. 3. Given the existence of the morality clause in form of Article 6(1) of the Directive 98/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 1998 on the legal protection of biotechnological inventions which corresponds to Article 53(a) European Patent Convention, a special emphasis is put on Europe as a guiding principle for Australia and the United States. Any room for improvement of the European morality clause and Europe s current manner of evaluating ethical tensions surrounding human embryonic stem cell inventions is examined. 4. A summary of options (as represented by Australia, the United States and Europe) available as a basis for the optimal examination procedure of human embryonic stem cell inventions is depicted, whereas the best of such alternatives is deduced in order to create a benchmark framework. This framework is then utilised on and promoted as a tool to assist Europe (as represented by the European Patent Office) in examining human embryonic stem cell patent applications. This method suggests a possibility of implementing an institution solution. 5. Ultimately, a question of whether such reformed European patent system can be used as a founding stone for a potential patent reform in Australia and the United States when examining human embryonic stem cells or other morally controversial inventions is surveyed. The author wishes to emphasise that the guiding thought while carrying out this work is to convey the significance of identifying, analysing and clarifying the ethical tensions surrounding patenting human embryonic stem cells and ultimately present a solution that adequately assesses patentability of human embryonic stem cell inventions and related biotechnologies. In answering the key questions above, the Thesis strives to contribute to the broader stem cell debate about how and to which extent ethical and social positions should be integrated into the patenting procedure in pluralistic and morally divided democracies of Europe and subsequently Australia and the United States.

Tutkielman päätavoitteena on analysoida suomalaisten, saksaa opiskelevien lukiolaisten suullisen testin suorituksia kielen oikeellisuuden näkökulmasta virheanalyysin avulla. Aineistona on osa Helsingin yliopiston HY-TALK-hankkeen saksan kielen tutkimusaineistosta: videoinnit suullisen kielitaidon testeistä sekä asiantuntijaraadin arvioinnit suorituksista. Koska aineisto on suullinen, tutkielmassa tarkastellaan aluksi suullisen kielen piirteitä. Virheanalyysin pohjana ovat muun muassa Corderin, Nickelin, Kleppinin ja Jamesin esittämät teoriat. Tutkielmassa analysoidaan kolmentoista, selkeästi joko A1.3- tai A2.2-taitotasolle arvioidun opiskelijan suoritukset. Virheanalyysin tavoitteena on saada selville kielioppivirheiden määrät, kullekin taitotasolle tyypilliset kielioppivirheet sekä selvittää tasojen välisiä eroja. Virheanalyysissä ei huomioida leksikaalisia eikä ääntämisvirheitä, vaan keskitytään morfologisiin ja syntaktisiin virheisiin. Virheet jaotellaan eri virheluokkiin (nominaalilausekkeiden deklinaatio, pronomini, taipumattomat sanaluokat, kysymyssanat, kieltoilmaukset, verbit ja lauserakenne) ja ne tilastoidaan taulukoihin. Lisäksi pohditaan virheiden syitä sekä virheiden vaikutusta kielen ymmärrettävyyteen. Jälkimmäistä selvitetään saksaa äidinkielenään puhuvan, kolmihenkisen raadin avulla. Raadin sekä numeeriset että verbaaliset arvioinnit ovat myös osa tutkielman aineistoa. Toinen tutkielman päätavoite on opetussuunnitelman taitotasoasteikon validointi. Tarkoituksena on selvittää oikeellisuuden taitotasokuvausten toimivuutta arvioinnissa A1.3- ja A2.2-tasojen osalta. Tätä tavoitetta varten selvitetään myös kielitaidon arvioinnin taustalla olevia teorioita. HY-TALK-asiantuntijaraadin arviointeja verrataan virheanalyysin tuloksiin korrelaatiokertoimen ja regressiosuoran avulla. Virheanalyysin perusteella voidaan todeta, että molemmilla tasoilla olevat opiskelijat tekevät eniten virheitä nominaalilausekkeiden deklinaatiossa (A2.2-tasolla 60,0 prosenttia kaikista virheistä ja A1.3-tasolla 42,2 prosenttia). A1.3-tasolle arvioidut opiskelijat tekevät paljon virheitä myös verbeissä ja lauserakenteissa, kun taas A2.2-tason opiskelijat hallitsevat nämä rakenteet paremmin. A1.3-tasolle arvioidut opiskelijat tekevät enemmän virheitä (22,10 virhettä sataa sanaa kohden) kuin A2.2-tasolle arvioidut (9,80 virhettä sataa sanaa kohden). Virheiden syitä ovat muun muassa testitilanne, puhekumppanin vaikutus ja interferenssi. Kielen ymmärrettävyyteen vaikuttavat saksalaisen raadin mukaan kielioppivirheiden lisäksi muun muassa puheen sujuvuus ja leksikaaliset ongelmat. Vakavimpina virheinä pidetään virheitä lauserakenteessa, sillä ne haittaavat usein ymmärrettävyyttä. Deklinaatiovirheitä puolestaan ei yleensä pidetä vakavina virheinä. Taitotasokuvaukset toimivat A1.3- ja A2.2-tasojen osalta hyvin, sillä virheanalyysin virhemäärät ja HY-TALK-raadin arvioinnit korreloivat keskenään, kun otetaan huomioon molemmat tasot A1.3 ja A2.2. Kielioppivirheiden määrä siis vaikuttaa kielen oikeellisuuden arviointiin. Taitotasokuvauksia olisi kuitenkin joiltain osin syytä tarkentaa ja yhtenäistää esimerkiksi konkreettisten esimerkkien avulla (esim. mikä on peruskielioppivirhe?) ja kuvaamalla myös kielen ymmärrettävyyttä joka tasolla.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common cause of neurological disability in young adults, affecting more than two million people worldwide. It manifests as a chronic inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS) and causes demyelination and neurodegeneration. Depending on the location of the demyelinated plaques and axonal loss, a variety of symptoms can be observed including deficits in vision, coordination, balance and movement. With a typical age of onset at 20-40 years, the social and economic impacts of MS on lives of the patients and their families are considerable. Unfortunately the current treatments are relatively inefficient and the development of more effective treatments has been impeded by our limited understanding of the causes and pathogenesis of MS. Risk of MS is higher in biological relatives of MS patients than in the general population. Twin and adoption studies have shown that familial clustering of MS is explained by shared genetic factors rather than by shared familial environment. While the involvement of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes was first discovered four decades ago, additional genetic risk factors have only recently been identified through genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Current evidence suggests that MS is a highly polygenic disease with perhaps hundreds of common variants with relatively modest effects contributing to susceptibility. Despite extensive research, the majority of these risk factors still remain to be identified. In this thesis the aim was to identify novel genes and pathways involved in MS. Using genome-wide microarray technology, gene expression levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 12 MS patients and 15 controls were profiled and more than 600 genes with altered expression in MS were identified. Three of five selected findings, DEFA1A3, LILRA4 and TNFRSF25, were successfully replicated in an independent sample. Increased expression of DEFA1A3 in MS is a particularly interesting observation, because its elevated levels have previously been reported also in several other autoimmune diseases. A systematic review of seven microarray studies was then performed leading to identification of 229 genes, in which either decreased or increased expression in MS had been reported in at least two studies. In general there was relatively little overlap across the experiments: 11 of the 229 genes had been reported in three studies and only HSPA1A in four studies. Nevertheless, these 229 genes were associated with several immunological pathways including interleukin pathways related to type 2 and type 17 helper T cells and regulatory T cells. However, whether these pathways are involved in causing MS or related to secondary processes activated after disease onset remains to be investigated. The 229 genes were also compared with loci identified in published MS GWASs. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in 17 of the 229 loci had been reported to be associated with MS with P-value less than 0.0001 including variants in CXCR4 and SAPS2, which were the only loci where evidence for correlation between the associated variant and gene expression was found. The CXCR4 variant was further tested for association with MS in a large case-control sample and the previously reported suggestive association was replicated (P-value is 0.0004). Finally, common genetic variants in candidate genes, which had been selected on the basis of showing association with other autoimmune diseases (MYO9B) or showing differential expression in MS in our study (DEFA1A3, LILRA4 and TNFRSF25), were tested for association with MS, but no evidence of association was found. In conclusion, through a systematic review of genome-wide expression studies in MS we have identified several promising candidate genes and pathways for future studies. In addition, we have replicated a previously suggested association of a SNP variant upstream of CXCR4 with MS. In this dissertation I study language complexity from a typological perspective. Since the structuralist era, it has been assumed that local complexity differences in languages are balanced out in cross-linguistic comparisons and that complexity is not affected by the geopolitical or sociocultural aspects of the speech community. However, these assumptions have seldom been studied systematically from a typological point of view. My objective is to define complexity so that it is possible to compare it across languages and to approach its variation with the methods of quantitative typology. My main empirical research questions are: i) does language complexity vary in any systematic way in local domains, and ii) can language complexity be affected by the geographical or social environment? These questions are studied in three articles, whose findings are summarized in the introduction to the dissertation. In order to enable cross-language comparison, I measure complexity as the description length of the regularities in an entity; I separate it from difficulty, focus on local instead of global complexity, and break it up into different types. This approach helps avoid the problems that plagued earlier metrics of language complexity. My approach to grammar is functional-typological in nature, and the theoretical framework is basic linguistic theory. I delimit the empirical research functionally to the marking of core arguments (the basic participants in the sentence). I assess the distributions of complexity in this domain with multifactorial statistical methods and use different sampling strategies, implementing, for instance, the Greenbergian view of universals as diachronic laws of type preference. My data come from large and balanced samples (up to approximately 850 languages), drawn mainly from reference grammars. The results suggest that various significant trends occur in the marking of core arguments in regard to complexity and that complexity in this domain correlates with population size. These results provide evidence that linguistic patterns interact among themselves in terms of complexity, that language structure adapts to the social environment, and that there may be cognitive mechanisms that limit complexity locally. My approach to complexity and language universals can therefore be successfully applied to empirical data and may serve as a model for further research in these areas.

Goals. Immigrant pupils are over-represented in special education. Linguistic difficulties are the most pivotal reasons for social exclusion of immigrant pupils during their school career. Addedly reading, writing, and language development disorders are the most common reasons for both part-time and extensive special education. I studied class teachers' perceptions of the typical linguistic difficulties of pupils who speak Finnish as their second language and of those who have dyslexia, because I suspect that telling the difference between linguistic competency in progress and the symptoms of dyslexia isn't easy. I look for overlappings in the perceptions of linguistic difficulties, their causes and their support measures, which would reveal the challenges in recognizing linguistic difficulties, which in turn might partly explain why immigrant pupils are over-represented in special education. Methods. This study was carried out as structured individual interviews with nine class teachers from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. To increase reliability, complementary information was gathered about the same phenomenon with a questionnaire that each interviewee filled out at the end of the interview. It was required that the interviewees have experience of teaching both dyslexic pupils and pupils who speak Finnish as a second language. The material analysis was mainly deductive, but the material that wasn't in line with the theoretical frame of reference was analyzed inductively. Results and conclusions. There were overlappings in the class teachers' perceptions of the linguistic difficulties, support measures fitting them and, based on the questionnaire results, also of the causes of these difficulties. Additionally all the interviewees said it to be difficult to recognize dyslexia in a pupil who speaks Finnish as a second language. I came to the conclusion that distinguishing different linguistic difficulties from one another is a challenge to which class teachers don't always feel competent to rise, which is why they consider the assistance of special teachers and other professionals beneficial.

Citizenship in the everyday of a work community. Immigrants narratives of working life. Through globalisation and the mobility of workforce, citizenship has gained new forms, and the mere legal definition of citizenship no longer gives a comprehensive view of the citizenship of an individual. Also the social, cultural and financial dimensions of it are related to the concept of citizenship. In Finland, full citizenship is promoted, according to the Integration Act and social security system, by the requirement that immigrants should mainly get their livelihood through work. In my study I approach citizenship on four levels: the global, national, work community and private levels. In the study, the global has constituted the largest possible context, which refers to the local affects of global processes. The local and the global come together in the research in that globalisation is realised on the local level, i.e. in small communities such as work communities. The objective of the study is to examine how the citizenship of immigrants who live and work in Finland is constructed in the everyday life of a work community. The most central concept of the study is cultural script, which is based on prevailing forms of knowing, and which are constructed in different ways in different times and cultures. Conflicts of scripts in the working life and difficulties in understanding and applying them are in the centre of the study. In the study, the working life experiences of immigrants are approached through narrative research. The research material consists of the working life narratives of nine immigrants who live and work in Finland permanently. Each interviewee has been interviewed 2 4 times so the research material consists of 26 interviews. The material has been analysed from the points of view of perception, feeling and action. Deborah Tannen s and William Labov s as well as Matti Hyvärinen s method of expectancy analysis to locate cultural scripts has been utilised to organise the research material. In addition, David Herman s concepts of participatory roles and event types formed in narratives have been used in the analysis of the material. The basis in the analysis is that the world, events and experiences do not define the available processes; they are always culturally and individually anchored choices of the speaker and narrator. The most important results of the study are related to the gap between globalisation and everyday life. The discussion about the future need for workforce due to the changing population structure as well as about the benefits for national economy brought by internationalisation has continued in Finland for years. However, the working life narratives of the immigrants interviewed for the study show that an average citizen and member of a work community does not immediately encounter the macro level benefits in, for example, the mobility of workforce. In most of the working life narratives there was a point in speaking and saying, in which the immigrant worker either dares to speak or falls silent. Sometimes the courage to speak was related to language skills but more to the courage to be seen and to be part of a Finnish work community. Other workers that either speak their colleague with an immigrant background into a part of their work community or marginalise the colleague with their silence have an important role in a Finnish work community. In several working life narratives, the script of the Finnish working life and work community, the way to work, was opened to the immigrant and the so-called script exchange did not take place. The study shows that working life experiences and inclusion and exclusion built on the working life have an important role in the construction of active citizenship. The detailed analysis of the working life experience narratives gives new, relevant research data about citizenship as inclusion.

The main aim of the present study was to develop information and communication technology (ICT) based chemistry education. The goals for the study were to support meaningful chemistry learning, research-based teaching and diffusion of ICT innovations. These goals were used as guidelines that form the theoretical framework for this study. This Doctoral Dissertation is based on eight-stage research project that included three design researches. These three design researches were scrutinized as separate case studies in which the different cases were formed according to different design teams: i) one researcher was in charge of the design and teachers were involved in the research process, ii) a research group was in charge of the design and students were involved in the research process, and iii) the design was done by student teams, the research was done collaboratively, and the design process was coordinated by a researcher. The research projects were conducted using mixed method approach, which enabled a comprehensive view on education design. In addition, the three central areas of design research: problem analysis, design solution and design process were included in the research, which was guided by the main research questions formed according to these central areas: 1) design solution: what kind of elements are included in ICT-based learning environments that support meaningful chemistry learning and diffusion of innovation, 2) problem analysis: what kind of new possibilities the designed learning environments offer for the support of meaningful chemistry learning, and 3) design process: what kind of opportunities and challenges does collaboration bring to the design of ICT-based learning environments? The main research questions were answered according to the analysis of the survey and observation data, six designed learning environments and ten design narratives from the three case studies. Altogether 139 chemistry teachers and teacher students were involved in the design processes. The data was mainly analysed by methods of qualitative content analysis. The first main result from the study give new information on the meaningful chemistry learning and the elements of ICT-based learning environment that support the diffusion of innovation, which can help in the development of future ICT-education design. When the designed learning environment was examined in the context of chemistry education, it was evident that an ICT-based chemistry learning environment supporting the meaningful learning of chemistry motivates the students and makes the teacher s work easier. In addition, it should enable the simultaneous fulfilment of several pedagogical goals and activate higher-level cognitive processes. The learning environment supporting the diffusion of ICT innovation is suitable for Finnish school environment, based on open source code, and easy to use with quality chemistry content. According to the second main result, new information was acquired about the possibilities of ICT-based learning environments in supporting meaningful chemistry learning. This will help in setting the goals for future ICT education. After the analysis of design solutions and their evaluations, it can be said that ICT enables the recognition of all elements that define learning environments (i.e. didactic, physical, technological and social elements). The research particularly demonstrates the significance of ICT in supporting students motivation and higher-level cognitive processes as well as versatile visualization resources for chemistry that ICT makes possible. In addition, research-based teaching method supports well the diffusion of studied innovation on individual level. The third main result brought out new information on the significance of collaboration in design research, which guides the design of ICT education development. According to the analysis of design narratives, it can be said that collaboration is important in the execution of scientifically reliable design research. It enables comprehensive requirement analysis and multifaceted development, which improves the reliability and validity of the research. At the same time, it sets reliability challenges by complicating documenting and coordination, for example. In addition, a new method for design research was developed. Its aim is to support the execution of complicated collaborative design projects. To increase the reliability and validity of the research, a model theory was used. It enables time-pound documenting and visualization of design decisions that clarify the process. This improves the reliability of the research. The validity of the research is improved by requirement definition through models. This way learning environments that meet the design goals can be constructed. The designed method can be used in education development from comprehensive to higher level. It can be used to recognize the needs of different interest groups and individuals with regard to processes, technology and substance knowledge as well as interfaces and relations between them. The developed method has also commercial potential. It is used to design learning environments for national and international market.

Work has a central role in the lives of big share of adult Finns and meals they eat during the workday comprise an important factor in their nutrition, health, and well-being. On workdays, lunch is mainly eaten at worksite canteens or, especially among women, as a packed meal in the workplace s break room. No national-level data is available on the nutritional quality of the meals served by canteens, although the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health laid out the first nutrition recommendations for worksite canteens in 1971. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of various socio-demographic, socioeconomic, and work-related factors to the lunch eating patterns of Finnish employees during the working day and how lunch eating patterns influence dietary intake. Four different population-based cross-sectional datasets were used in this thesis. Three of the datasets were collected by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (Health Behaviour and Health among the Finnish Adult Population survey from 1979 to 2001, n=24746, and 2005 to 2007, n=5585, the National Findiet 2002 Study, n=261), and one of them by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (Work and Health in Finland survey from 1997, 2000, and 2003, n=6369). The Health Behaviour and Health among the Finnish Adult Population survey and the Work and Health in Finland survey are nationally representative studies that are conducted repeatedly. Survey information was collected by self-administered questionnaires, dietary recalls, and telephone interviews. The frequency of worksite canteen use has been quite stable for over two decades in Finland. A small decreasing trend can be seen in all socioeconomic groups. During the whole period studied, those with more years of education ate at worksite canteens more often than the others. The size of the workplace was the most important work-related determinant associated with the use of a worksite canteen. At small workplaces, other work-related determinants, like occupation, physical strain at work, and job control, were also associated with canteen use, whereas at bigger workplaces the associations were almost nonexistent. The major social determinants of worksite canteen availability were the education and occupational status of employees and the only work-related determinant was the size of the workplace. A worksite canteen was more commonly available to employees at larger workplaces and to those with the higher education and the higher occupational status. Even when the canteen was equally available to all employees, its use was nevertheless determined by occupational class and the place of residence, especially among female employees. Those with higher occupational status and those living in the Helsinki capital area ate in canteens more frequently than the others. Employees who ate at a worksite canteen consumed more vegetables and vegetable and fish dishes at lunch than did those who ate packed lunches. Also, the daily consumption of vegetables and the proportion of the daily users of vegetables were higher among those male employees who ate at a canteen. In conclusion, life possibilities, i.e. the availability of a canteen, education, occupational status, and work-related factors, played an important role in the choice of where to eat lunch among Finnish employees. The most basic prerequisite for eating in a canteen was availability, but there were also a number of underlying social determinants. Occupational status and the place of residence were the major structural factors behind individuals choices in their lunch eating patterns. To ensure the nutrition, health, and well-being of employees, employers should provide them with the option to have good quality meals during working hours. The availability of worksite canteens should be especially supported in lower socioeconomic groups. In addition, employees should be encouraged to have lunch at a worksite canteen when one is available by removing structural barriers to its use.

In Taita Hills, south-eastern Kenya, remnants of indigenous mountain rainforests play a crucial role as water towers and socio-cultural sites. They are pressurized due to poverty, shortage of cultivable land and the fading of traditional knowledge. This study examines the traditional ecological knowledge of Taitas and the ways it may be applied within transforming natural resource management regimes. I have analyzed some justifications for and hindrances to ethnodevelopment and participatory forest management in light of recently renewed Kenyan forest policies. Mixed methods were applied by combining an ethnographic approach with participatory GIS. I learned about traditionally protected forests and their ecological and cultural status through a seek out the expert method and with remote sensing data and tools. My informants were: 107 household interviewees, 257 focus group participants, 73 key informants and 87 common informants in participatory mapping. Religious leaders and state officials shared their knowledge for this study. I have gained a better understanding of the traditionally protected forests and sites through examining their ecological characteristics and relation to social dynamics, by evaluating their strengths and hindrances as sites for conservation of cultural and biological diversity. My results show that, these sites are important components of a complex socio-ecological system, which has symbolical status and sacred and mystical elements within it, that contributes to the connectivity of remnant forests in the agroforestry dominated landscape. Altogether, 255 plant species and 220 uses were recognized by the tradition experts, whereas 161 species with 108 beneficial uses were listed by farmers. Out of the traditionally protected forests studied 47 % were on private land and 23% on community land, leaving 9% within state forest reserves. A paradigm shift in conservation is needed; the conservation area approach is not functional for private lands or areas trusted upon communities. The role of traditionally protected forests in community-based forest management is, however, paradoxal, since communal approaches suggests equal participation of people, whereas management of these sites has traditionally been the duty of solely accredited experts in the village. As modernization has gathered pace such experts have become fewer. Sacredness clearly contributes but, it does not equal conservation. Various social, political and economic arrangements further affect the integrity of traditionally protected forests and sites, control of witchcraft being one of them. My results suggest that the Taita have a rich traditional ecological knowledge base, which should be more determinately integrated into the natural resource management planning processes.
