Based on a modified mean-field model, we calculate the Curie temperatures of Fe2+- and Co2+-doped diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) and their dependence on the hole concentration. We find that the Curie temperatures increase with an increase in hole concentration and the relationship T(C)proportional to p(1/3) also approximately holds for Fe2+- and Co2+-doped systems with moderate hole concentration. For either low or high hole concentrations, however, the p(1/3) law is violated due to the anomalous magnetization of the Fe2+ and Co2+ ions, and the nonparabolic nature of the hole bands. Further, the values of T-C for Fe2+- and Co2+-doped DMSs are significantly higher than those for Mn2+-doped DMSs, due to the larger exchange interaction strength.

Mn+ ions were implanted into n-type Ge(1 1 1) single crystal at room temperature at an energy of 100 keV with a dose of 3 x 10(16) cm(-2). Subsequent annealing was performed on the samples at 400 degreesC and 600 degreesC in a flowing nitrogen atmosphere. The magnetic properties of the samples have been investigated by alternating gradient magnetometer at room temperature. The compositional properties of the annealed samples were studied by Auger electron spectroscopy and the structural properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal room-temperature ferromagnetism for the annealed samples. The magnetic analysis supported by compositional and structural properties indicates that forming the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) MnxGe1-x after annealing may account for the ferromagnetic behavior in the annealed samples. Mn-doped Si films were prepared on Si(001) substrates by magnetron cosputtering and post-annealing process. The structural, morphological and magnetic properties of the films have been investigated. X-ray diffraction results show that the as-prepared film is amorphous. By annealing at 800 degrees C, however, the film is crystallized. There is no secondary phase found except Si in the two films. Chemical mapping shows that no segregation of the Mn atoms appears in the annealed film. Atomic force microscopy images of the films indicate that the annealed film has a granular feature that covers uniformly the film surface while there is no such kind of characteristic in the as-prepared film. The field dependence of magnetization was measured using an alternating gradient magnetometer, and it has been indicated that the annealed film shows room-temperature ferromagnetism. Zinc-blende CrSb (zb-CrSb) layers with room-temperature ferromagnetism have been grown on (In,Ga)As buffer layers epitaxially prepared on (001) GaAs substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. Compared with the typical thickness [2-3 ML (ML denotes monolayers)] of zb-CrSb grown directly on GaAs, the thickness of zb-CrSb grown on (In,Ga)As has been increased largely; the maximum can be up to similar to 9 ML. High-resolution cross sectional transmission electron microscopy images show that the zb-CrSb layer is combined with (In,Ga)As buffer layer without any dislocations at the interface. Zincblende CrSb (zb-CrSb) layers with room-temperature ferromagnetism have been grown on relaxed and strained (In,Ga)As buffer layers epitaxially prepared on (001) GaAs substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The structural characterizations of CrSb layers fabricated under the two cases are studied by using synchrotron grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GID). The results of GID experiments indicate that no sign of second phase exists in all the zb-CrSb layers. Superconducting quantum interference device measurements demonstrate that the thickness of zb-CrSb layers grown on both relaxed and strained (In,Ga)As buffer layers can be increased to similar to 12 monolayers (similar to 3.6nm), compared to similar to 3 monolayers (similar to 1nm) on GaAs directly.

We report the influence of growth parameters and post-growth annealing on the structural characterizations and magnetic properties of (Ga, Cr)As films. The crystalline quality and magnetic properties are sensitive to the growth conditions. The single-phase (Ga, Cr)As film with the Curie temperature of 10 K is synthesized at growth temperature T-s = 250 degrees C and with nominal Cr content x = 0.016. However, for the films with x > 0.02, the aggregation of Cr atoms is strongly enhanced as both T. and x increase, which not only brings strong compressive strain in the epilayer, but also roughens the surface. The origin of room-temperature ferromagnetism in (Ga, Cr)As films with nanoclusters is also discussed.

Diluted-magnetic GaN:Sm:Eu films have been fabricated by co-implantation of Sm and Eu ions into c-plane (0001) GaN films and a subsequent annealing process. The structural, morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The XRD and AFM analyses show that the annealing process can effectively recover the crystalline degradation caused by implantation. Compared with GaN:Sm films, more defects have been introduced into GaN:Sm:Eu films due to the Eu implantation process. According to the SQUID analysis, GaN:Sm:Eu films exhibit clear room-temperature ferromagnetism. Moreover, GaN:Sm:Eu films show a lower saturation magnetization (Ms) than GaN:Sm films.

The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Sn1-xFexO2 nanograins synthesized by simple hydrothermal method using SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O and FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O as raw materials are studied. No secondary phase was found in the XRD spectrum. The linear change of lattice volume for different Fe content strongly supports that the Fe3+ substitutes Sn4+ in SnO2 lattice. A Raman and IR spectra study indicated that the Fe incorporates into the SnO2 lattice. Both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic signals are detected in the Mossbauer spectra. The Sn1-xFexO2 (x <= 0.10) samples show room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) and the saturation magnetization increased with increasing Fe percent. Fe ions present three kinds of magnetic behaviors including paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and antiferromagnetic in the samples observed by investigation of the M-H and M-T curves. The weak RTFM was due to only a fraction of Fe ions contributing to magnetic-order coupling mediated by oxygen vacancy.

The dilute magnetic semiconductor of Sn1-x-yMnxFeyO2 (0 <= x <= 0.10, 0 <= y <= 0.10) Were syhthesized with the hydrothermal method using SnCl4, Mn(CH3COO)(2) center dot 4H(2)O and FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O as the raw materials. The structure, morphologies and magnetic properties of the sample were characterized via X-ray powder diffractometer(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), Raman spectrum and superconducting and quantum interference device(SQUIT), and Mossbeaur spectrum. No secondary phase was found in the XRD spectrum. The morphology of the samples is affected by the kind or the mount of transition metal. The local vibrating model-of Mn Positioned SnO2 sites was found in Raman spectrum. The measured magnetic results indicate that when x = 0.10, y = 0, the sample exhibits strong magnetization in low-temperature (5 K), but the magnetization decrease rapidly at room. temperature; In contrast, when x = 0, y = 0.1, the sample's magnetization and coercivity are both small, but being temperature independent. Mossbeaur spectra indicates that part of the Fe is ferromagnetic coupled, and the simulating results indicate that the ferromagnetic character is intrinsic.

This letter reports on the Raman, optical and magnetic properties of FeNi co-doped ZnO nanowires prepared via a soft chemical solution method. The microstructural investigations show that the NiFe co-dopants are substituted into wurtzite ZnO nanostructure without forming any secondary phase. The co-doped nanowires show a remarkable reduction of 34 nm (267.9 meV) in the optical band gap, while suppression in the deep-level defect transition in visible luminescence. Furthermore, these nanowires exhibit ferromagnetism and an interesting low-temperature spin glass behavior, which may arise due to the presence of disorder and strong interactions of frustrated spin moments of Ni and Fe co-dopants on the ZnO lattice sites. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on tribological properties of plasma-sprayed Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal (QC) coating after laser re-melting treatment. The laser treatment resulted in a more uniform, denser and harder microstructure than that of the as-sprayed coatings. Tribological experiments on the coatings were conducted under reciprocating motion at high frequency in the temperature range from 25 to 650 degreesC. Remarkable influence of temperature on the friction behavior of the coating was recorded and analyzed. Microstructural analysis indicated that the wear mechanisms of the re-melted QC coatings changed from abrasive wear at room temperature, to adhesive wear at 400 degreesC and severe adhesive wear at 650 degreesC owing to the material transfer of the counterpart ball. It was also observed that the ratio of the icosahedral (i)-phase to beta-Al-50(Fe,CU)(50) phase in the coating was higher after test at 400 'C than that at 650 'C. The variation of the ratio UP of coating and of the property of the counterpart ball and coating with the temperature are the two main factors influencing the wear mechanisms and value of the friction coefficient.

In this paper, the mechanical properties of PI/Si_O, nanocomposite hybrid films with different silica doping levels are experimentally studied at low temperature. Experimental results show that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the PI/Si_O, nanocomposite hybrid films gradually reduces when the ambiance temperature is decreased. At the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K), the CTE value is about five times less than that at room temperature (287 K). The measured CTEs of hybrid films greatly decrease when doped with inorganic silica, especially when the silica doping level is more than 1 wt.%. However, too high silica contents (more than 10 wt.%) can cause problem to disperse effectively and the specimens become quite opaque. Experimental results also show that the effects of the pre-applied stress levels can be neglected on the CTE testing. When the ambient temperature changes from 287 to 77 K, the measured average values of the films' ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Young's modulus increase about 60 and 90%, respectively, while the breaking elongation decreases about 42%.

Cobalt-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCoxO) thin films were fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering. The processing conditions were carefully designed to avoid the occurrence of Co precipitations. The films are c-axis oriented, and the solubility limit of Co in ZnO is less than 17%, determined by x-ray diffraction. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show Co ions have a chemical valance of 2+. In this paper, hysteresis loops were clearly observed for Zn1-xCoxO films at room temperature. The coercive field, as well as saturation magnetization per Co atom, decreases with increasing Co content, within the range of 0.07

High dose Mn was implanted into semi-insulating GaAs substrate to fabricate embedded ferromagnetic Mn-Ga binary particles by mass-analyzed dual ion beam deposit system at room temperature. The properties of as-implanted and annealed samples were measured with X-ray diffraction, high-resolution X-ray diffraction to characterize the structural changes. New phase formed after high temperature annealing. Sample surface image was observed with atomic force microscopy. All the samples showed ferromagnetic behaviour at room temperature. There were some differences between the hysteresis loops of as-implanted and annealed samples as well as the cluster size of the latter was much larger than that of the former through the surface morphology. Low-threshold and highly efficient continuous-wave laser performance of Yb:Y3Al5O12 (Yb:YAG) single crystal grown by a temperature gradient technique (TGT) was achieved at room temperature. The laser can be operated at 1030 and 1049 nm by varying the transmission of the output coupler. Slope efficiencies of 57% and 68% at 1049 and 1030 nm, respectively, were achieved for 10 at. % Yb:YAG sample in continuous-wave laser-diode pumping. The effect of pump power on the laser emission spectrum of both wavelengths is addressed. The near-diffraction-limited beam quality for different laser cavities was achieved. The excellent laser performance indicates that TGT-grown Yb:YAG crystals have very good optical quality and can be potentially used in high-power solid-state lasers.
