We investigate theoretically resonant tunneling through double-bended graphene nanoribbon (GNR) structures, i.e., armchair-edged GNRs (AGNRs) in between two semi-infinite zigzag GNR leads. Our numerical results demonstrate that the resonant tunneling can be tuned dramatically by the Fermi energy and the length and/or widths of the AGNR for both the metallic and semiconductorlike AGNRs. The structure can also be use to control the valley polarization of the tunneling currents and could be useful for potential application in valleytronics devices. An analytical model for the spin filtering transport in a ferromagnetic-metal - Al2O3 - n-type semiconductor tunneling structure has been developed, and demonstrated that the ratio of the helicity-modulated photo-response to the chopped one is proportional to the sum of the relative asymmetry in conductance of two opposite spin-polarized tunneling channels and the MCD effect of the ferromagnetic metal film. The performed measurement in an iron-metal/Al2O3/n-type GaAs tunneling structure under the optical spin orientation has verified that all the aspects of the experimental results are very well in accordance with our model in the regime of the spin filtering. After the MCD effect of the iron film is calibrated by an independent measurement, the physical quantity of Delta G(t)/G(t) (Delta G(t) = G(t)(up arrow) - G(t)(down arrow) is the difference of the conductance between two opposite spin tunneling channels, G(t) =( G(t)(up arrow) + G(t)(down arrow))/2 the averaged tunneling conductance), which concerns us most, can be determined quantitatively with a high sensitivity in the framework of our analytical model. We reported the all electronic demonstration of spin injection and detection in the trilayers with hybrid structure of CoFeB/GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As (metal/insulator semiconductor) by probing the magnetoresistance at low temperature from 1.8 to 30 K. Tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios of 3.8%, 4.7%, 2.9%, and 1.4% at 1.8, 10, 20, and 30 K, respectively, were observed. Bias dependence of both the junction resistance and TMR ratio was studied systematically. V-half at which TMR drops to half of its maximum is 6.3 mV, being much smaller compared to that observed in (Ga,Mn)As/ZnSe/Fe and (Ga,Mn)As/AlAs/MnAs hybrid structures, indicating lower Fermi energy of (Ga,Mn)As.

We investigated the transmission probability of a single electron transmission through a quantum ring device based on the single-band effective mass approximation method and transfer matrix theory. The time-dependent Schrodinger equation is applied on a Gaussian wave packet passing through the quantum ring system. The electron tunneling resonance peaks split when the electron transmits through a double quantum ring. The splitting energy increases as the distance between the two quantum rings decreases. We studied the tunneling time through the single electron transmission quantum ring from the temporal evolution of the Gaussian wave packet. The electron probability density is sensitive to the thickness of the barrier between the two quantum rings. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We investigate theoretically the spin-independent tunneling magnetoresistance effect in a graphene monolayer modulated by two parallel ferromagnets deposited on a dielectric layer. For the parallel magnetization configuration, Klein tunneling can be observed in the transmission spectrum but at specific oblique incident angles. For the antiparallel magnetization configuration, the transmission can be blocked by the magneticelectric barrier provided by the ferromagnets. Such a transmission discrepancy results in a tremendous magnetoresistance ratio and can be tuned by the inclusion of an electric barrier.

We study the structural defects in the SiOx film prepared by electron cyclotron resonance plasma chemical vapour deposition and annealing recovery evolution. The photoluminescence property is observed in the as-deposited and annealed samples. [-SiO3](2-) defects are the luminescence centres of the ultraviolet photoluminescence (PL) from the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and PL measurements. [-SiO3](2-) is observed by positron annihilation spectroscopy, and this defect can make the S parameters increase. After 1000 degrees C annealing, [-SiO3](2-) defects still exist in the films.

In this paper, a cellular neural network with depressing synapses for contrast-invariant pattern classification and synchrony detection is presented, starting from the impulse model of the single-electron tunneling junction. The results of the impulse model and the network are simulated using simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE). It is demonstrated that depressing synapses should be an important candidate of robust systems since they exhibit a rapid depression of excitatory postsynaptic potentials for successive presynaptic spikes.

We theoretically investigate resonant tunneling through S- and U-shaped nanostructured graphene nanoribbons. A rich structure of resonant tunneling peaks is found emanating from different quasi-bound states in the middle region. The tunneling current can be turned on and off by varying the Fermi energy. Tunability of resonant tunneling is realized by changing the width of the left and/or right leads and without the use of any external gates.

Tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in Ga(0.9)2Mn(0.08)As/Al-O/Co40Fe40B20 trilayer hybrid structure as a function of temperature from 10 to 50 K with magnetic field vertical bar H vertical bar <= 2000 Oe has been studied. TMR ratio of 1.6% at low fields at 10 K was achieved with the applied current of 1 mu A. The behavior of junction resistance was well explained by the tunneling resistance across the barrier. Strong bias dependences of magnetoresistance and junction resistance were presented. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. [DOI 10.1063/1.3068418]

We have investigated the conductance of a quantum dot system suffering an anti-symmetric ac gate voltage which induces the transition between dot levels in the linear regime at zero temperature in the rotating wave approximation. Interesting Fano resonances appear on one side of the displaced resonant tunnelling peaks for the nonresonant case or the peak splitting for the resonant case. The line shape of conductance (vs Fermi energy) near each level of the quantum dot can be decomposed into two profiles: a Breit-Wigner peak and a Fano profile, or a Breit-Wigner peak and a dip in both cases.

Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of GaAs-based resonant tunneling diodes have been investigated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Electron resonant tunneling is strongly suppressed by the applied magnetic field, leading to peak current decreasing with increasing magnetic field. The observed plateau-like structures appear in negative differential resistance region on the I-V curves and are magnetic-field dependent. The plateau-like structures are due to the coupling between the energy levels in the emitter well and in the main quantum well. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

We have studied the Fano resonance in photon-assisted transport through a quantum dot. Both the coherent current and the spectral density of shot noise have been calculated. It is predicted that the shape of the Fano profile will also appear in satellite peaks. It is found that the variations of Fano profiles with the strengths of nonresonant transmissions are not synchronous in absorption and emission sidebands. The effect of interference on photon-assisted pumped current has also been investigated. We further predict the current and spectral density of shot noise as a periodic function of the phase, which exhibits an intrinsic property of resonant and nonresonant channels in the structures.

Stochastic resonance (SR) induced by the signal modulation is investigated, by introducing the signal-modulated gain into a single-mode laser system. Using the linear approximation method, we detailedly calculate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a gain-noise model of the single-mode laser, taking the cross-correlation between the quantum noise and pump noise into account. We find that, SR appears in the dependence of the SNR on the intensities of the quantum and the pump noises when the correlation coefficient between both the noises is negative; moreover, when the cross-correlation between the two noises is strongly negative, SR exhibits a resonance and a suppression versus the gain coefficient, meanwhile, the single-peaked SR and multi-peaked SR occur in the behaviors of the SNR as functions of the loss coefficient and the deterministic steady-state intensity. Spin-dependent tunneling through a symmetric semiconductor barrier is studied including the k(3) Dresselhaus effect. The spin-dependent transmission of an electron can be obtained analytically. By comparing with previous work [Phys. Rev. B 67, 201304(R) (2003) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 056601 (2004)], it is shown that the spin polarization and interface current are changed significantly by including the off-diagonal elements in the current operator, and can be enhanced considerably by the Dresselhaus effect in the contact regions.
The quantum tunneling between two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well configuration
Resumo:
In terms of exact solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. we examine the quantum tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species trapped in a double well configuration. We use the two series of time-dependent SU(2) gauge transformation to diagonalize the Hamilton operator obtain analytic time-evolution formulas of the population imbalance and the berry phase. The particle population imbalance (a(L)(+)a(L) - a(R)(+)a(R)) of species A between the two wells is studied analytically.
