The influence of mechanical polishing, chemo-mechanical polishing (CMP), as well as CMP and subsequent chemical etching on the properties of sapphire substrate surfaces has been studied. The sapphire substrates have been investigated by means of polarizing microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM). X-ray diffraction rocking curves (XRCs) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results show that CMP with subsequent chemically etching yields the best-quality sapphire substrate surfaces. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The paper describes the rapid and label-free detection of the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) device based on gold films prepared by electroless plating. The plating condition for obtaining films suitable for SPR measurements was optimized. Gold nanoparticles adsorbed on glass slides were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Detection of the WSSV was performed through the binding between WSSV in solution and the anti-WSSV single chain variable fragment (scFv antibody) preimmobilized onto the sensor surface. Morphologies of the as-prepared gold films, gold films modified with self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers, and films covered with antibody were examined using an atomic force microscope (AFM). To demonstrate the viability of the method for real sample analysis, WSSV of different concentrations present in a shrimp hemolymph matrix was determined upon optimizing the surface density of the antibody molecules. The SPR device based on the electroless-plated gold films is capable of detecting concentration of WSSV as low as 2.5 ng/mL in 2% shrimp hemolymph, which is one to two orders of magnitude lower than the level measurable by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays. The lipase genes of Yarrowia lipolytica, LIPY7 and LIPY8, fused with FLO-flocculation domain sequence from Saccharomyces cerevisiae at their N-termini, were expressed in Pichia pastoris KM71. Following the induction with methanol, the recombinant proteins were displayed on the cell surface of P. pastoris, as confirmed by the confocal laser scanning microscopy. The LipY7p and LipY8p were anchored on P. pastoris via the flocculation functional domain of Flo 1 p. The surface-displayed lipases were characterized for their application as the whole-cell biocatalyst. These lipases can also be cleaved off from their anchor by enterokinase treatment to yield functionally active proteins in the supernatant offering an alternative purification method for LipY7p and LipY8p. Two species of aspidogastreans, namely Aspidogaster ijimai and A. conchicola, were studied by scanning electron microscopy. In nine lakes and an old river course, the Tian'ezhou oxbow, investigated in the flood plain of the Yangtze River, A. ijimai was obtained from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in three lakes, and A. conchicola from the black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus in three lakes and the oxbow. In none of the localities, however, were the two species found together. It is suggested that A. ijimai may be considered as a specialist parasite for the common carp, at least in the flood-plain lakes of the Yangtze River. The two parasites were similar in many aspects of their morphology. Their bodies can both be separated into a dorsal part and a ventral disc, with the body surface of the dorsal part elevated by transverse folds, and the disc subdivided into alveoli by transverse and longitudinal septa, although the number of alveoli was different in the two species. The depression on the ventral surface of the neck region was prominent for both species, and their ventral disc was covered densely with non-ciliated bulbous papillae. The position of mouth, osmo-regulatory pore and marginal organ was also similar for A. ijimai and A. conchicola. However, microridges in the trough of the folds in the neck region and numerous small pits on the upper part of the septa were found exclusively in A. ijimai, but uniciliated sensory papillae in A. conchicola.

The effects of the surface morphology of Ag on the surface-plasmon-enhanced emission of ZnO films have been studied for a ZnO/Ag/Si system by photoluminescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The results indicate that the enhancement of ZnO ultraviolet emission is dependent on the deposition conditions of the Ag interlayers. By examining the dependence of the enhancement ratio of surface-plasmon-mediated emission on the characteristic parameters of Ag surface morphology, we found that the surface plasmon coupling to light is determined by both the Ag particle size and density.

Fe films with the different thicknesses were grown on c(4x4) reconstructed GaAs (001) surfaces at low temperature by molecular-beam epitaxy. Well-ordered bcc structural Fe epitaxial films are confirmed by x-ray diffraction patterns and high-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images. A large lattice expansion perpendicular to the surface in Fe film is observed. In-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is determined by the difference between magnetizing energy along [110] and [110] directions, and the constant of interfacial uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is calculated to be 1.02x10(-4) J m(-2). We also find that magnetic anisotropy is not obviously influenced after in situ annealing, but in-plane strain is completely changed.

Evolution of surface morphology and optical characteristics of 1.3-mu m In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL). After deposition of 16 monolayers (ML) of In0.5Ga0.5As, QDs are formed and elongated along the [110] direction when using sub-ML depositions, while large size InGaAs QDs with better uniformity are formed when using ML or super-ML depositions. It is also found that the larger size QDs show enhanced PL efficiency without optical nonlinearity, which is in contrast to the elongated QDs.

The in situ optical reflectivity measurements are employed to monitor the GaN epilayer growth process above low-temperature AlN buffer layer on c-plane sapphire substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. It is found that the lateral growth of GaN islands and their coalescence is promoted in the initial growth stage if the AlN buffer layer is treated with a long annealing time and has an optimal thickness: As confirmed by atomic force microscopy observations, the quality of GaN epilayers is closely dependent on the surface morphology of AlN buffer layer, especially the grain size and nuclei density after the annealing treatment. We have measured photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolve photoluminescence (TRPL) from InGaN/GaN quantum dots (QDs) grown on passivated GaN surfaces by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Strong PL emission was observed from the QDs structure even at room temperature. By comparing the PL and TRPL dependence on temperature, a significant difference between the QD and wetting layer emissions was revealed. The QD emission is characterized by a strong exciton localization effect, which leads to a larger thermal activation energy, a nearly constant radiative lifetime independent of temperature and an unusual temperature behavior of the PL peak energy. The chemical properties of AlxGa1-xN surfaces exposed to air for different time periods are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL) measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PL and AFM results show that AlxGa1-xN samples exhibit different surface characteristics for different air-exposure times and Al contents. The XPS spectra of the Al 2p and Ga 2p core levels indicate that the peaks shifted slightly, from an Al-N to an Al-O bond and from a Ga-N to a Ga-O bond. All of these results show that the epilayer surface contains a large amount of Ga and Al oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Surface micro-roughness, surface chemical properties, and surface wettability are three important aspects of wafer surfaces during a wafer cleaning process, which determine the bonding quality of ordinary direct wafer bonding. In this study, InP wafers are divided into four groups and treated by different chemical processes. Subsequently, the characteristics of the treated InP surfaces are carefully studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. The optimal wafer treatment method for wafer bonding is determined by comparing the results of the processes as a whole. This optimization is later evaluated by a scanning electronic microscope (SEM), and the ridge waveguide 1.55 mu m Si-based InP/InGaAsP multi-quantum-well laser chips are also fabricated. Surface morphology and optical properties of 1.3 mum self-organized InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy have been investigated by atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence measurements. It has been shown that the surface morphology evolution and emission wavelengths of InGaAs/GaAs QDs can be controlled effectively via cycled monolayer deposition methods due to the reduction of the surface strain. Our results provide important information for optimizing the epitaxial parameters for obtaining 1.3 mum long wavelength emission quantum dots structures. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) have been fabricated by depositing 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 monolayer (ML) InAs on surfaces of the undoped-n(+) (UN+) type GaAs structure. Room temperature contactless electroreflectance (CER) was employed to study the built-in electric field and the surface Fermi level pinning of these QD-covered UN+ GaAs samples. The CER results show that 1.6 ML InAs QDs on GaAs do not modify the Fermi level, whereas for samples with more than 1.6 ML InAs coverage, the surface Fermi level is moved to the valence band maximum of GaAs by about 70 meV (which is independent of the InAs deposition thickness) compared to bare GaAs. It is concluded that the modification of InAs coverage on the Fermi level on the GaAs surface is due to the QDs, rather than to the wetting layer. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

The surfactant effect of isoelectronic indium doping during metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth of cubic GaN on GaAs (1 0 0) substrates was studied. Its influence on the optical properties and surface morphology was investigated by using room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and atomic force microscopy. It is shown that the sample with small amount of In-doping has a narrower PL linewidth, and a smoother surface than undoped cubic GaN layers. A slight red shift of the near-band-edge emission peak was observed. These results revealed that, for small TMIn flow rates, indium played the role of the surfactant doping and effectively improved the cubic GaN film quality; for large TMIn flow rates, the alloying formation of Ga1-xInxN might have occurred. Carbon films were deposited by mass-selected ion beam technique with ion energies 50-200eV at a substrate temperature from room temperature to 80 degreesC,. For the energies used, smooth diamond-like carbon films were deposited at room temperature. When the substrate temperature was 600 degreesC,rough graphitic films were produced. But highly oriented carbon tubes were observed when the energies were larger than 140eV at 800 degreesC. They were perpendicular to the surface and parallel to each other. preferred orientation of graphite basic plane was observed by high-resolution electron microscopy. Shallow ion implantation and stress are responsible for this orientation.
