Full Paper: A study has been made on the annealing of nylon-1010 under high pressures. Heat treatment of melt-crystallized nylon-1010 was performed at 250degreesC for 30 min in the pressure range 0.7 similar to 2.5 GPa. It was found that the triclinic crystals of virgin nylon-1010 were retained at pressures less than 1.0 GPa or larger than 1.2 GPa. The X-ray diffraction intensity of (100) planes decreased with increasing pressure. The diffraction peaks shifted slightly to higher angles (2theta) relative to the virgin nylon-1010, indicating dense packing of polymer chains at high pressures. The highest melting temperature was 208degreesC for the sample annealed at 1.5 GPa. No extended-chain crystals were formed under the experimental conditions. Crosslinking occurred in the pressure range 1.0 similar to 1.2 GPa. The structure of the crosslinked samples was characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is concluded that a mechanism of crosslinking via carbodiimide can explain the nature of crosslinking of nylon-1010 annealed at high pressures. The remarkable changes of the structure of annealed nylon-1010 are also discussed in this article.

Two M(n+)-2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol systems for the simultaneous determination of the valence states of Cr and Fe using factor analysis were studied. (1) At pH 4.0, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) react with the reagent to form stable complexes and a slight difference in the wavelengths of maximum absorption (lambda(max.)) between the two complexes is observed when the sodium lauryl sulfate, which also acts as a solubilizing and sensitizing agent, is added, viz., 590 nm for Cr(III) and 593 nm for Cr(VI) complexes. (2) In the presence of ethanol, both Fe(II) and Fe(III) form 1:2 complexes with the reagent at pH 2.5-3.5 and the lambda(max.) of the Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes is at 557 and 592 nm, respectively. In the target transformation factor analysis, the K coefficients calculated from the standard mixtures by classical least-squares analysis and a non-zero intercept added to each wavelength are used as the target vector instead of the pure component standards; this can decrease the analysis errors introduced by the interaction between the two species and by deviations from Beer's law.

Shrinkage, retractive stress, and infrared dichroism of the drawn low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as-drawn and irradiated by Co-60-ray have been measured under different annealing conditions. The shrinkage and the disorientation of the irradiated sample was undergone more rapidly than that of unirradiated one as the temperature was continuously increased, surpassing a certain value, and a higher degree of shrinkage and disorientation was achieved finally for the irradiated sample when the samples were annealed with free ends. For the samples heated isothermally with fixed ends, the retractive stress went through a maximum and then attenuated to a limited value, and the degree of such a stress attenuation for the unirradiated sample was much more than that for the irradiated sample. These results show that the taut tie molecules (TTMs) in drawn PE can relax by the pulling of chain segments out of crystal blocks that they anchored in at elevated temperatures higher than the a transition and also by the displacing of microfibrils if the samples were annealed with free ends. The cross-links produced by irradiation prohibit the former process. It was further observed that the dependence of the average extinction coefficient of the band at 2016 cm-1 on that of the band at 1894 cm-1 is related to irradiation and annealing conditions, which has also been explained by the relaxation of TTMs and the function of irradiation-induced cross-linking on the relaxation.

The distribution and mobility of heavy metals in the paddy soils surrounding a copper smelting plant in south China was investigated. We assessed the degree of metal contamination using an index of geoaccumulation. The metals were divided into two groups: (1) Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd, whose concentrations were heavily affected by anthropogenic inputs, and (2) Ni, Co and Cr, which were mainly of geochemical origin. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb in the polluted soils were higher than the Chinese soil quality criteria. The chemical partitioning patterns of Pb, Zn and Cu indicated that Pb was largely associated with the residual and NH2OH HCl extractable fractions. In contrast, Cd was predominantly associated with the MgCl2 extractable fraction. A large proportion of Cu was bound to the acidic H2O2 extractable fractions, while Zn was predominantly found in the residual phase. The fraction of mobile species, which potentially is the most harmful to the environment, was found to be elevated compared to unpolluted soils in which heavy metals are more strongly bound to the matrix. The mobility of the metals was studied by water extraction using a modification of Tessier's procedure, and the order of mobility was Zn > Cd > Cu > Ce > Pb.

The changes of corrosion potential (E-corr) of metals immersed in seawater were investigated with electrochemical technology and epifluoresence microscopy. In natural seawater, changes of E-corr were determined by the surface corrosion state of the metal. E-corr of passive metals exposed to natural seawater shifted to noble direction for about 150 mV in one day and it didn't change in sterile seawater. The in-situ observation showed that biofilms settled on the surfaces of passive metals when E-corr moved in noble direction. The bacteria number increased on the metal surface according to exponential law and it was in the same way with the ennoblement of E-corr. The attachment of bacteria during the initial period played an important role in the ennoblement of E-corr and it is believed that the carbohydrate and protein in the biofilm are reasons for this phenomenon. The double layer capacitance (C-dl) of passive metals decreased with time when immersed in natural seawater, while remained almost unchanged in sterile seawater. The increased thickness and reduced dielectric constant of C-dl may be reasons.

The stability of Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass (BMG) upon isothermal annealing near the glass transition temperature has been investigated by using x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and the pulse echo overlap method. The density, elastic constants, and thermodynamic parameters as well as their annealing time dependence have been determined. The microstructural and properties changes of the annealed BMG were checked by acoustic measurement. Obvious structural and property changes were observed with prolonged annealing of the BMG near the glass transition temperature.

ZnO films were grown on (0 0 0 1) LiNbO3 substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Annealing of ZnO films was performed in air for I h at 800 degrees C. The effects of annealing on the structural and optical properties of ZnO thin films on LiNbO3 substrates were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and AFM showed that the as-grown and the annealed ZnO films grown on LiNbO3 substrates had c-axis preferential orientation, the crystallinity of the ZnO films grown on LiNbO3 Substrates was improved, and the grain size increased by annealing. The PL spectra showed that the intensity of the UV near-band-edge peak was increased after annealing, while the intensity of visible peak (deep-level emission) decreased. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Metal contents of surface sediments were analyzed temporally and spatially in Lake Chaohu, China. No obvious temporal variations were observed, which probably due to physio- and bio- mixing, e.g. wind and microbes, in this lake. Enrichment factor of some metals were generally greater than 1.0, suggesting significant anthropogenic impact on metal levels. Significantly positive correlations between concentrations of nutrient and metals indicated that the nutrients transported to this lake contributed, to some extent, to the enrichment of metals. The correlation between trace metals concentrations indicated the co-contamination of anthropogenically derived metal enrichment in surface sediment of Lake Chaohu.

Toxic metals introduced into aquatic environments by human activities accumulation in sediments. A common notion is that the association of metals with acid volatile sulfides (AVS) affords a mechanism for partitioning metals from water to solid phase, thereby reducing biological availability. However, variation in environmental conditions can mobilize the sediment-bound metal and result in adverse environmental impacts. The AVS levels and the effect of AVS on the fate of Cu, Cd, Zn, Ni in sediments in the the Changjiang River, a suboxic river with sandy bottom sediment and the Donghu Lake, a anoxic lake with muddy sediment in China, were compared through aeration, static adsorption and release experiments in laboratory. Sips isotherm equation, kinetic equation and grade ion exchange theory were used to describe the heavy metal adsorb and release process. The results showed that AVS level in the lake sediment are higher than that of the river. Heavy metals in the overlying water can transfer to sediments incessantly as long as the sediment remains undisturbed. The metal release process is mainly related to AVS oxidation in lake sediment while also related to Org-C and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide oxidation in river sediment. The effect of sulfides on Zn and Ni is high, followed by Cd, and Cu is easy bound to Org-C. AVS plays a major role in controlling metals activity in lake sediment and its presence increase the adsorption capacity both of the lake and river sediments.

We report on improved electrical properties of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) film deposited on titanium metal foil using nitrogen annealing. After nitrogen annealing of the PZT capacitors, symmetric capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics, higher dielectric constant and breakdown field, less change of dielectric constant with frequency, lower dielectric loss and leakage current are obtained. Thermal annealing of GaInAs/GaNAs quantum wells (QWs) as well as other nitrogen- and indium-contained QW structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy and its effect on optical properties are investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) and photovoltaic (PV) spectra of annealed GaInAs/GaNAs QWs show that the luminescence properties become degraded due to the N diffusion from the GaNAs barrier layers to the GaInAs well layer. Meantime, the annealing-induced blueshift of the PL peak in this QW system is mainly induced by the change of In distribution, suggesting that the In reorganization is greatly assisted by the N-induced defects. The elucidation of annealing effect in GaInAs/GaNAs QW samples is helpful for a better understanding to the annealing effect in the GaInNAs/GaAs QWs. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The effect of thermal annealing of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) with emission wavelength at 1.3 mu m have been investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM measurements. There is a dramatic change in the A spectra when the annealing temperature is raised up to 800 degrees C: an accelerated blushifit of the main emission peak of QDs together with an inhomogeneous broadening of the linewidth. The TEM images shows that the lateral size of normal QDs decreases as the annealing temperature is increased, while the noncoherent islands increase their size and densit. A small fraction of the relative large QDs contain dislocations when the annealing temperature increases up to 800 degrees C. The latter leads to the strong decrease of the PL intensity.

Semi-insulating (SI) InP wafers of 50 and 75mm in diameter can be obtained by annealing of undoped liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) InP at 930 ℃ for 80h. The annealing ambient can be pure phosphorus (PP) or iron phosphide (IP). The IP-SI InP wafers have good electrical parameters and uniformity of whole wafer. However, PP-SI InP wafers exhibit poor uniformity and electrical parameters, Photoluminescence which is subtle to deep defect appears in IP-annealed semi-insulating InP. Traps in annealed SI InP are detected by the spectroscopy of photo-induced current transient. The results indicate that there are fewer traps in IP-annealed undoped SI InP than those in as-grown Fe-doped and PP-undoped SI-undoped SI InP. The formation mechanism of deep defects in annealed undoped InP is discussed.

In this paper, we studied the changes in the photoluminescence spectra of the Ar+ ion implanted monocrystalline sapphire annealed at different atmospheres and different temperatures. Single crystals of sapphire (Al2O3) with the (1 0 (1) over bar 0) (m-samples) orientation were implanted at 623 K with 110 keV Ar+ ions to a fluence of 9.5 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). Photoluminescence measurement of the as-implanted sample shows a new emission band at 506 nm, which is attributed to the production of interstitial Al atoms. The intensity of emission band at 506 nm first increased then decreased with increase in annealing temperature. For the same annealing temperature, the intensity of PL peak at 506 nm of the sample annealed in air was higher than the sample annealed in vacuum. The experimental results show that the intensity of the PL peak at 506 nm of Ar-implanted sapphire can be enhanced by subsequent annealing with an enhancement of nearly 20 times. The influence of thermal annealing of the Ar-implanted samples on the new 506 nm emission band was discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
