Työn tavoitteena oli luoda hankintalogistiikan kehittämisen toimintamalli, sekä testata sitä yhden raaka-ainetoimittajan kanssa. Nykytilan kartoituksella havaittiin selkeästi nykyisen ostostrategian sekä operatiivisten ostotoimenpiteiden kehittämisen tarve. Erityisen selvä heikkous on nykyisten toimittajien suuri lukumäärä. Jatkossa tulisi keskittyä ostovoiman lisäämiseen ja pyrkiä entistä pidempiin yhteistyösopimuksiin. Työssä suunniteltiin valitun toimittajan ja yrityksen tarpeet sekä vaatimukset huomioiva hankintamalli. Kyseisen hankintamallin parametrien laskemiseksi sekä toimitusten valvomiseksi tehtiin Microsoft Excel -ohjelmalla pilottityökalu operatiiviselle hankintatoiminnalle. Yrityksen hankintatoiminnan kehittämiseksi tulisi keskittyä toimittajien lukumäärän sekä ostorutiinien vähentämiseen, tuotteiden ja nimikkeiden tehokkaaseen luokittelemiseen, tieto- ja tietoliikennetekniikan hyödyntämiseen hankintatoiminnan ja tuotannonohjauksen työkaluna sekä toimittajien toiminnan tehostamiseen yhteistyötä lisäämällä.

Työn tarkoituksena on kehittää omaperustaiseen toimitilarakentamiseen soveltuva hankintatoimen päätöksentekomalli. Keskeisintä on ohjata päätöksentekoprosessia pois osaoptimointipäätöksistä kohti yhteisiä tavoitteita tukevia päätöksiä. Hankintatoimen vaikutusmahdollisuus koko hankkeen onnistumiseen ja sujumiseen on keskeinen. Työssä analysoitiin nykyinen hankintaprosessi ja nykyiset hankintatoimeen vaikuttavat tekijät. Tieto kerättiin haastattelemalla hankintahenkilökuntaa, yhtä suurta toimittajaa sekä tutustumalla aiheesta tehtyihin kirjallisiin tutkimuksiin. Suurimpina ongelmien aiheuttajana on hankkeen eri osapuolten yhteistyön ohuus, hankkeen prosessien puutteellinen linkitys, kyvyttömyys vaikuttaa päätöksiin oikealla hetkellä, suunnittelun ohjaus ja johtaminen, lyhytjänteisyys eri osapuolten kesken ja hankinnassa käytettävien kriteereiden suppeus. Työn tuloksena muodostettiin hankintatoimen päätöksentekomalli, jossa hanke on jaettu ajallisesti neljään osittain päällekkäiseen vaiheeseen. Vaiheet ovat ideavaihe, suunnitteluvaihe, joka on myös prosessien päätöksentekovaihe, rakentamisvaihe, joka on prosessien ohjausvaihe, sekä jälkihoitovaihe. Vaiheiden sisältämät tehtävät, tehtävien tavoitteet, käytettävät keinot, tehtävän vastuut ja osallistujat sekä tehtävään liittyvän päätöksenteon kriteerit sisältyvät malliin. Keskeisimpiä asioita tehokkaan hankintatoimen rakentamisessa on toimiva ja strategisesti johdettu hankintaorganisaatio, toimittajasuhteiden syvyys ja suunnittelun johtamisen sekä ohjaamisen hallinta.

Hankinta on yrityksen ulkoisten resurssien hallintaa. Organisaation ulkopuolelta hankitut resurssit muodostavat tavallisesti valtaosan kokonaiskustannuksista, joten hankintojen johtamisella on suuri merkitys yrityksen kannattavuudelle. Hankintatoimella voidaan vaikuttaa kannattavuuteen, kun se toimii yrityksen strategisella tasolla. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli kehittää malli strategisen hankintatoimen rakentamiseen teolliseen pk-yritykseen. Käsiteltäviä osa-alueita olivat hankintojen kategoriointi, hankintaorganisaation rakentaminen sekä strategisten hankintaprosessien määrittäminen ja kuvaaminen. Kuhunkin osa-alueeseen kerättiin teoreettisia ratkaisumalleja, joista kostettiin sovellettava ratkaisu. Teorian pohjalta määritettyä kategorioinnin koostamismallia sekä kategoriapohjaisen hankintaorganisaation rakennustyökalua käytettiin kohdeyrityksen strategisen hankintatoimen rakentamiseen. Prosessiosuudessa määritettiin tehtävien ja vastuiden pohjalta strategiset hankintaprosessit, joista koostettiin tavoiteprosessikuvaukset. Niiden avulla kohdeyritys tai muu mallia soveltava organisaatio voi jalkauttaa toiminnan. Prosesseissa esitetään konkreettisia työkaluja tavoiteasetannan ja mittaroinnin viemiseksi yhtenäisenä strategiatasolta operatiiviseen toimintaan. Lopputuloksena syntyi yhtenäinen, kolmivaiheinen malli strategisen hankintatoimen rakentamiseen.

A presente dissertação tem por objetivo criar um modelo de compras de rMRO (manutenção, reparos e operações) baseado na Internet, para a Michelin no Brasil. Atualmente, a empresa Michelin está participando de uma comunidade virtual, sob a forma de um "vertal", criada pelas maiores empresas da indústria de pneu e borracha (Michelin, Goodyear, Pirelli, Continental, Cooper, Sumitomo, entre outras), e cuja intenção é desenvolver uma praça de mercado global para realização das suas compras e aprovisionamentos. A Rubbernetwork.com (RNC) foi fundada como uma empresa independente, reunindo o conjunto das compras da indústria de pneu e borracha, representando um valor de mais de cinqüenta bilhões de dólares por ano gastos em matérias-primas, equipamentos, maquinário, bens e serviços. Esta central de compras permitirá a seus membros aumentar a eficácia de suas operações e realizar economias substanciais nos custos de transação. Cada transação será protegida por apropriados sistemas advindos da implementação da tecnologia da informação, a fim de garantir a confidencialidade de todas as atividades comerciais de cada empresa individualmente. Os membros participantes estão convencidos de que a iniciativa possibilitará economias significativas e melhorará a eficiência de suas cadeias de valor. A comunidade virtual será aberta a todos os fabricantes e fornecedores relacionados à indústria de pneu e borracha, sendo também bem vindas oportunidades 2 de interação com outras comunidades virtuais, especialmente aquelas associadas à indústria automotiva. É dentro do contexto de implementação do projeto Rubbernetwork.com (RNC) que a dissertação se desenvolverá, tecendo estratégias e modelos de negócios concernentes aos processos de compras relacionados a MRO (manutenção, reparos e operações). O desenvolvimento de um "vertal" na Internet não impede que portais horizontais complementares, e não excludentes, sejam também acrescidos como alternativa de negócios. Há de se dar um tratamento específico às compras diárias que envolvem um grande número de diferentes fornecedores, várias áreas internas na empresa e consomem tempo desnecessário em trabalhos burocráticos, sem fins estratégicos. Cabe ressaltar que tal categoria de compras, denominada MRO, apesar de seu baixo valor por produto ou serviço adquirido, gera um elevado volume de transações e um alto impacto operacional. Pelo fato de tratar-se de uma experiência inovadora em setor de características próprias - mercado de pneu e borracha -, e de estar-se criando uma expectativa de cooperação entre empresas concorrentes, em busca da racionalização do processo de compras e divisão de custos operacionais, a metodologia utilizada, quanto aos seus fins, será exploratória e aplicada I. Quanto aos meios de investigação, a pesquisa realizada será: de campo, estudo de caso e bibliográfica. O universo da pesquisa restringir-se-á à empresa Michelin, onde o processo de compras de MRO baseado na Internet será contemplado, através de levantamento de dados nos E.UA e França, a fim de propor-se um modelo para a Michelin Brasil.

A model for comparing the inventory costs of purchasing under the economic order quantity (EOQ) system and the just-in-time (JIT) order purchasing system in existing literature concluded that JIT purchasing was virtually always the preferable inventory ordering system especially at high level of annual demand. By expanding the classical EOQ model, this paper shows that it is possible for the EOQ system to be more cost effective than the JIT system once the inventory demand approaches the EOQ-JIT cost indifference point. The case study conducted in the ready-mixed concrete industry in Singapore supported this proposition.

This work project has the objective of exploring the importance of making good decisions on supplier selection, so that the purchasing department can contribute to the success of a company. For that it is presented a short bibliography review of the latest insights that were found relevant, on the subjects of purchasing, technology, outsourcing, supplier selection and decision-making techniques. For a better understating on how to deal with a decision-making situation, a case study is also presented: Digital Printing Solutions (DPS) is a Portuguese company that provides complete and integrated printing solutions and has been planning to contract a software supplier. DPS has no formal supplier-selection model and it has to choose between 2 suppliers. The case study was solved using the M-MACBETH software. I have found that complex decisions-making situations can be easily overcome by using the M-MACBETH decision model. Moreover, the usage of a model, instead of decision that follows no formal procedure, provides the decision maker with insights that can be useful to negotiate with the supplier.

Aware of the importance of developing new alternatives to improve the performance of the companies, our purpose in this paper is to develop a medium term production planning model that deals with the concepts of Partnership and Reverse Logistics. Our model takes advantage of the synergies of integration, developing a model for global production planning that generates the optimal production and purchasing schedule for all the companies integrating a logistic chain. In a second part of the paper we incorporate products returns to the first model proposed, and analyze the implications they have over this model. We use some examples with different configurations of supply chains varying the number of production plants, distribution centers and recovery plants. To solve the model we have combined optimization and simulation procedures.

To describe the change of purchasing moving from administrative to strategic function academics have put forward maturity models which help practitioners to compare their purchasing activities to industry top performers and best practices. However, none of the models aim to distinguish the purchasing maturity from the after-sales point of view, even though after-sales activities are acknowledged as a relevant source of revenue, profit and competitive advantage in most manufacturing firms. The maturity of purchasing and supply management practices have a large impact to the overall performance of the spare parts supply chain and ultimately to the value creation and relationship building for the end customer. The research was done as a case study for a European after-sales organization which is part of a globally operating industrial firm specialized in heavy machinery. The study mapped the current state of the purchasing practices in the case organization and also distinguished the relevant areas for future development. The study was based on the purchasing maturity model developed by Schiele (2007) and investigated also how applicable is the maturity model in the spare parts supply chain context. Data for the assessment was gathered using five expert interviews inside the case organization and other parties involved in the company’s spare parts supply chain. Inventory management dimension was added to the original maturity model in order to better capture the important areas in a spare parts supply chain. The added five questions were deduced from the spare parts management literature and verified as relevant areas by the case organization’s personnel. Results indicate that largest need for development in the case organization are: better collaboration between sourcing and operative procurement functions, use of installed base information in the spare parts management, training plan development for new buyers, assessment of aligned KPI’s between the supply chain parties and better defining the role of after-sales sourcing. The purchasing maturity model used in this research worked well in H&R Leading, Controlling and Inventory Management dimensions. The assessment was more difficult to conduct in the Supplier related processes, Process integration and Organizational structure –dimensions, mainly because the assessment in these sections would for some parts require more company-wide assessment. Results indicate also that the purchasing maturity model developed by Schiele (2007) captures the relevant areas in the spare parts supply as well.

This study is a qualitative action research by its nature with elements of personal design in the form of a tangible model implementation framework construction. Utilized empirical data has been gathered via two questionnaires in relation to the arranged four workshop events with twelve individual participants. Five of them represented maintenance customers, three maintenance service providers and four equipment providers respectively. Further, there are two main research objectives in proportion to the two complementary focusing areas of this thesis. Firstly, the value-based life-cycle model, which first version has already been developed prior to this thesis, requires updating in order to increase its real-life applicability as an inter-firm decision-making tool in industrial maintenance. This first research objective is fulfilled by improving appearance, intelligibility and usability of the above-mentioned model. In addition, certain new features are also added. The workshop participants from the collaborating companies were reasonably pleased with made changes, although further attention will be required in future on the model’s intelligibility in particular as main results, charts and values were all reckoned as slightly hard to understand. Moreover, upgraded model’s appearance and added new features satisfied them the most. Secondly and more importantly, the premises of the model’s possible inter-firm implementation process need to be considered. This second research objective is delivered in two consecutive steps. At first, a bipartite open-books supported implementation framework is created and its different characteristics discussed in theory. Afterwards, the prerequisites and the pitfalls of increasing inter-organizational information transparency are studied in empirical context. One of the main findings was that the organizations are not yet prepared for network-wide information disclosure as dyadic collaboration was favored instead. However, they would be willing to share information bilaterally at least. Another major result was that the present state of companies’ cost accounting systems will definitely need implementation-wise enhancing in future since accurate and sufficiently detailed maintenance data is not available. Further, it will also be crucial to create supporting and mutually agreed network infrastructure. There are hardly any collaborative models, methods or tools currently in usage. Lastly, the essential questions about mutual trust and predominant purchasing strategies are cooperation-wise important. If inter-organizational activities are expanded, a more relational approach should be favored in this regard. Mutual trust was also recognized as a significant cooperation factor, but it is hard to measure in reality.

ABSTRACT Towards a contextual understanding of B2B salespeople’s selling competencies − an exploratory study among purchasing decision-makers of internationally-oriented technology firms The characteristics of modern selling can be classified as follows: customer retention and loyalty targets, database and knowledge management, customer relationship management, marketing activities, problem solving and system selling, and satisfying needs and creating value. For salespeople to be successful in this environment, they need a wide range of competencies. Salespeople’s selling skills are well documented in seller side literature through quantitative methods, but the knowledge, skills and competencies from the buyer’s perspective are under-researched. The existing research on selling competencies should be broadened and updated through a qualitative research perspective due to the dynamic nature and the contextual dependence of selling competencies. The purpose of the study is to increase understanding of the professional salesperson’s selling competencies from the industrial purchasing decision- makers’ viewpoint within the relationship selling context. In this study, competencies are defined as sales-related knowledge and skills. The scope of the study includes goods, materials and services managed by a company’s purchasing function and used by an organization on a daily basis. The abductive approach and ‘systematic combining’ have been applied as a research strategy. In this research, data were generated through semi- structured, person-to-person interviews and open-ended questions. The study was conducted among purchasing decision-makers in the technology industry in Finland. The branches consisted of the electronics and electro-technical industries and the mechanical engineering and metals industries. A total of 30 companies and one purchasing decision-maker from each company were purposively chosen for the sampling. The sample covers different company sizes based on their revenues, their differing structures – varying from public to family companies –that represent domestic and international ownerships. Before analyzing the data, they were organized by the purchasing orientations of the buyers: the buying, procurement or supply management orientation. Thematic analysis was chosen as the analysis method. After analyzing the data, the results were contrasted with the theory. There was a continuous interaction between the empirical data and the theory. Based on the findings, a total of 19 major knowledge and skills were identified from the buyers’ perspective. The specific knowledge and skills from the viewpoint of customers’ prevalent purchasing orientations were divided into two categories, generic and contextual. The generic knowledge and skills apply to all purchasing orientations, and the contextual knowledge and skills depend on customers’ prevalent purchasing orientations. Generic knowledge and skills relate to price setting, negotiation, communication and interaction skills, while contextual ones relate to knowledge brokering, ability to present solutions and relationship skills. Buying-oriented buyers value salespeople who are ‘action oriented experts, however at a bit of an arm’s length’, procurement buyers value salespeople who are ‘experts deeply dedicated to the customer and fostering the relationship’ and supply management buyers value salespeople who are ‘corporate-oriented experts’. In addition, the buyer’s perceptions on knowledge and selling skills differ from the seller’s ones. The buyer side emphasizes managing the subject matter, consisting of the expertise, understanding the customers’ business and needs, creating a customized solution and creating value, reliability and an ability to build long-term relationships, while the seller side emphasizes communica- tion, interaction and salesmanship skills. The study integrates the selling skills of the current three-component model− technical knowledge, salesmanship skills, interpersonal skills− and relationship skills and purchasing orientations, into a selling competency model. The findings deepen and update the content of these knowledges and skills in the B2B setting and create new insights into them from the buyer’s perspective, and thus the study increases contextual understanding of selling competencies. It generates new knowledge of the salesperson’s competencies for the relationship selling and personal selling and sales management literature. It also adds knowledge of the buying orientations to the buying behavior literature. The findings challenge sales management to perceive salespeople’s selling skills both from a contingency and competence perspective. The study has several managerial implications: it increases understanding of what the critical selling knowledge and skills from the buyer’s point of view are, understanding of how salespeople effectively implement the relationship marketing concept, sales management’s knowledge of how to manage the sales process more effectively and efficiently, and the knowledge of how sales management should develop a salesperson’s selling competencies when managing and developing the sales force. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a global company should organise its purchasing operations. The theoretical framework of this study consists of organisation structures, management and coordination, purchasing organisational design, capabilities and outsourcing. The research is a qualitative case study and the used method was theme interview. Four global large scale companies were interviewed for this research in order to gain knowledge about how other companies have organised their purchasing functions and to gather their best practices. Interview results and theoretical framework were compared in order to test the theoretical framework and to create a detailed framework about how to organise purchasing operations in a global company. As a result a 14 point model about effective purchasing operation organisation for a global company was created. This model includes all the key determinants which should be considered when organising the purchasing operations. The results show that the organising decision should be always in line with company and purchasing strategies. Strategic purchasing operations should be centralized and operative tasks decentralized.
