Frutaformas is a Portuguese micro-enterprise, specialized in the production of premium dehydrated-fruit, an emerging snack category fostered by the increasing trend for healthier alimentary habits in developed countries. The relatively small size of the domestic market and the growing competition led Frutaformas to consider Europe as an attractive for export market. A scoring model based on a set of macro and micro-level criteria suggested the United Kingdom as the preferential target country at this stage. Recommendations on the entry mode and the associated risks were elaborated taking into account the country and industry analysis as well as Frutaformas’ unique organizational platform.

Tutkielman tutkimusongelmana on, miten kansainvälinen kohdemarkkinoiden valinta pitäisi suorittaa ohjelmistoalan mikroyrityksessä. Tutkielma on kvalitatiivinen, yksittäinen tapaustutkimus. Ennalta määrätyt numeeriset rajat valintakriteereille mahdollistavat markkinoiden tarkastelun objektiivisuuden. Suurimpana haasteena ohjelmistoalan mikroyrityksen kansainvälisessä kohdemarkkinavalinnassa on yrityksen kilpailukyvyn mittaaminen eri markkinoilla. Tämäjohtuu osin ohjelmistoalan dynaamisesta luonteesta sekä kilpailija-analyysien subjektiivisuudesta.

Tietotekniikan käyttö on tärkeää mikroyrityksen kasvun kannalta. Tutkielmassa pyrittiin toimintatutkimuksen keinoin löytämään kosmetiikan suoramyyntiä harjoittavan toiminimen KaunisSinä taustalla olevan osa-aikaisen yrittäjän asettamien tavoitteiden ja rajoitteiden mukaan paras ohjelmisto tukemaan asiakkuuden hallintaa. Ohjelmiston valintaa varten tutkittiin ohjelmistohankinnan menetelmiä kaupallisten valmisohjelmistojen, avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistojen ja räätälöityjen ohjelmistojen osalta. Yrittäjän toimintatapojen kartoituksen perusteella muodostettiin kriteerit ohjelmistojen vertailua ja valintaa varten. Vertailussa käytettiin painotetun keskiarvon menetelmää. Markkinoilla on saatavilla ominaisuuksiltaan sopivia avoimen lähdekoodin asiakkuuden hallintaohjelmistoja. Yrityksen on siis osittain mukautettava toimintatapojaan ohjelmiston mukaiseksi.

Given the increasing interest in using social software for company-internal communication and collaboration, this paper examines drivers and inhibitors of micro-blogging adoption at the workplace. While nearly one in two companies is currently planning to introduce social software, there is no empirically validated research on employees’ adoption. In this paper, we build on previous focus group results and test our research model in an empirical study using Structural Equation Modeling. Based on our findings, we derive recommendations on how to foster adoption. We suggest that micro-blogging should be presented to employees as an efficient means of communication, personal brand building, and knowledge management. In order to particularly promote content contribution, privacy concerns should be eased by setting clear rules on who has access to postings and for how long they will be archived.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to show how QFD can be used as part of a structured planning and analysis framework for micro-sized enterprises to build-up their e-business capabilities. Design/methodology/approach - This case study has been produced using a new framework which integrates the balanced scorecard, value chain and quality function deployment techniques into an integrated framework known as the E-Business Planning and Analysis Framework (E-PAF). It has been produced using an action research approach. Findings - A new framework with a supporting case study is provided. This case study has demonstrated that the framework can be applied successfully to micro-sized enterprises (those with less than ten employees) to successfully plan new strategic and technical developments. This will enhance the online service that the company is able to provide. Research limitations/implications - This paper presents a single case study. The technical recommendations are currently being implemented. Originality/value - Such analytical techniques are most commonly associated with large organisations, and are not specifically associated with e-business planning. This paper provides a new framework that will be of general applicability to other similarly sized enterprises that are looking to improve e-business capabilities. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper presents a preliminary exploration of the informal/formal economy nexus and entrepreneurial processes amongst a sample of Kenyan roadside vendors who mostly operate in the informal economy. Using semi-structured interviews, data was collected from sixty street vendors across Kenya. In particular the paper focuses on the relationship between the informal and formal economy and the factors that promote formality amongst micro and small enterprises in developing countries. The paper presents a conceptualization of a potential segmentation of the informal economy, considering the implications of this in terms of base of the pyramid initiatives and the promotion of development through enterprise.
