The objective of this study is to resolve how customer retention is managed in Finnish health and fitness clubs, and how is this comparable with the theoretical aspects of customer retention. It is also discussed how the process leading to customer retention is handled, and what the essential elements of customer retention and loyalty are specifically in the health and fitness club industry. In addition, it is discussed to what extent do health and fitness club companies implement the elements of customer retention in their businesses. Finally, there is discussion about the relationship and priority between the behavioral and attitudinal methods of creating retention in the companies. The data was collected by interviewing the management of six health and fitness clubs from different geographical regions in Finland. Results indicated that the most important constructs concerning customer retention were switching barriers, pricing strategy, competitive aspect, corporate image, service quality, employee retention, and customer satisfaction. In addition, the implementation of customer retention was found to vary between different sized companies and companies from different geographical locations. The purpose of this article is to explore customer retention strategies and tactics implemented by firms in recession. Our investigations show just how big a challenge many organizations face in their ability to manage customer retention effectively. While leading organizations have embedded real-time customer life cycle management, developed accurate early warning systems, price elasticity models and ‘deal calculators’, the organizations we spoke to have only gone as far as calculating the value at risk and building simple predictive models.

The objective of this master’s thesis was to examine the effect of customer orientation on customer satisfaction and how customer satisfaction and customer retention contribute to firm profitability. Beside customer orientation, also other antecedents of customer satisfaction, i.e. service quality, flexibility, trust and commitment, were investigated as control variables. Literature review revealed several research gaps concerning research of the key concepts. These research calls were also answered. The empirical study focused on one case company, a telecommunication expert. The data for the empirical part was collected with web-based questionnaire from case company’s business customers in January-February 2008. Sample (N=95) produced 59 answers, thus the response rate of the survey was 62,1%. The data was analyzed by using statistical analysis program, SPSS. As a conclusion, the results indicate that customer orientation do not affect customer satisfaction directly, but through service quality, flexibility and trust. Moreover, customer satisfaction has positive impacts on commitment and intentions to stay as a customer in the future, but not on profitability. In the present study, only past purchase behavior, measured with customer database measure, is positively related to firm profitability.

Customer satisfaction with a purchased product depends on its performance under warranty and during the remainder of its useful life. Dissatisfaction with an item is important to a manufacturer since it can lead to the loss of potential customers through the negative word-of-mouth effect as well as existing customers switching to a competitor. In this paper, we define satisfaction in terms of the likelihood of a customer not switching to a different manufacturer when a new item needs to be purchased. Manufacturers can use specific servicing strategies to reduce warranty costs and this topic has already been addressed in the literature without considering the effect of customer dissatisfaction. In this paper, we propose particular strategies that will increase customer satisfaction and we discuss methods for obtaining the optimal parameters of these strategies.

_______ The global fi nancial and economic crisis created new competition in the market for retail banking, and in the areas of existing customer retention and new customers’ acquisition. The corresponding economic and social change called for new adaptive strategies on behalf of banks to better understand the economic behaviour of their customers. This paper focuses on certain relevant psychological, sociological and economic factors that tend to characterize customer behaviours and attitudes towards banks. With particular emphasis on highlighting the potential implications of relevant theories for the purposes of banks, our conceptual model incorporates elements of trust, monetary attitudes and underlying emotional components.

telligence applications for the banking industry. Searches were performed in relevant journals resulting in 219 articles published between 2002 and 2013. To analyze such a large number of manuscripts, text mining techniques were used in pursuit for relevant terms on both business intelligence and banking domains. Moreover, the latent Dirichlet allocation modeling was used in or- der to group articles in several relevant topics. The analysis was conducted using a dictionary of terms belonging to both banking and business intelli- gence domains. Such procedure allowed for the identification of relationships between terms and topics grouping articles, enabling to emerge hypotheses regarding research directions. To confirm such hypotheses, relevant articles were collected and scrutinized, allowing to validate the text mining proce- dure. The results show that credit in banking is clearly the main application trend, particularly predicting risk and thus supporting credit approval or de- nial. There is also a relevant interest in bankruptcy and fraud prediction. Customer retention seems to be associated, although weakly, with targeting, justifying bank offers to reduce churn. In addition, a large number of ar- ticles focused more on business intelligence techniques and its applications, using the banking industry just for evaluation, thus, not clearly acclaiming for benefits in the banking business. By identifying these current research topics, this study also highlights opportunities for future research.
