In this paper, by using the Poincare compactification in R(3) we make a global analysis of the Lorenz system, including the complete description of its dynamic behavior on the sphere at infinity. Combining analytical and numerical techniques we show that for the parameter value b = 0 the system presents an infinite set of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles, which consist of invariant sets formed by a line of equilibria together with heteroclinic orbits connecting two of the equilibria. The dynamical consequences related to the existence of such cycles are discussed. In particular a possibly new mechanism behind the creation of Lorenz-like chaotic attractors, consisting of the change in the stability index of the saddle at the origin as the parameter b crosses the null value, is proposed. Based on the knowledge of this mechanism we have numerically found chaotic attractors for the Lorenz system in the case of small b > 0, so nearby the singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles.

Tanomaru-Filho M, Silveira GF, Reis JMSN, Bonetti-Filho I, Guerreiro-Tanomaru JM. Effect of compression load and temperature on thermomechanical tests for gutta-percha and Resilon (R). International Endodontic Journal, 44, 1019-1023, 2011.Aim To analyse a method used to evaluate the thermomechanical properties of gutta-percha and Resilon at different temperatures and compression loads.Methodology Two hundred and seventy specimens measuring 10 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm in height were made from the following materials: conventional gutta-percha (GCO). thermoplastic gutta-percha (GTP) and Resilon (R) cones (RE). After 24 h, the specimens were placed in water at 50 degrees C. 60 degrees C or 70 degrees C for 60 s. After that, specimens were placed between two glass slabs, and loads weighing 1.0, 3.0 or 5.0 kg were applied. Images of the specimens were digitized before and after the test and analysed using imaging software to determine their initial and final areas. The thermomechanical property of each material was determined by the difference between the initial and final areas of the specimens. Data were subjected to ANOVA and SNK tests at 5% significance. To verify a possible correlation between the results of the materials, linear regression coefficients (r) were calculated. Results Data showed higher flow area values for RE under all compression loads at 70 degrees C and under the 5.0 kg load at 60 degrees C (P < 0.05). Regarding gutta-percha, GTP showed higher flow under loads weighing 3.0 and 5.0 kg. at 60 and 70 degrees C (P < 0.05). GCO presented higher flow at 70 degrees C with a load of 5.0 kg. Regression analyses showed a poor linear correlation amongst the results of the materials under the different experimental conditions. Conclusion Gutta-percha and Resilon (R) cones require different compression loads and temperatures for evaluation of their thermomechanical properties. For all materials, the greatest flow occurred at 70 degrees C under a load of 5.0 kg: therefore. these parameters may be adopted when evaluating endodontic tilling materials.

For a class of reversible quadratic vector fields on R-3 we study the periodic orbits that bifurcate from a heteroclinic loop having two singular points at infinity connected by an invariant straight line in the finite part and another straight line at infinity in the local chart U-2. More specifically, we prove that for all n is an element of N, there exists epsilon(n) > 0 such that the reversible quadratic polynomial differential systemx = a(0) + a(1y) + a(3y)(2) + a(4Y)(2) + epsilon(a(2x)(2) + a(3xz)),y = b(1z) + b(3yz) + epsilon b(2xy),z = c(1y) +c(4az)(2) + epsilon c(2xz)in R-3, with a(0) < 0, b(1)c(1) < 0, a(2) < 0, b(2) < a(2), a(4) > 0, c(2) < a(2) and b(3) is not an element of (c(4), 4c(4)), for epsilon is an element of (0, epsilon(n)) has at least n periodic orbits near the heteroclinic loop. The effect of the Sb addition on the microstructural and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film was studied in this work. Experimental results show that the Sb addition allowed to control the grain size and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film, resulting in a nanostructured material. The nanostructured Sb-doped SnO2 thin films present high electrical conductivity, even in the presence of high porosity, supporting the hypothesis that nanostructured material must possess strong electrical conductivity. This work involves important aspects that can be applied to the development of high performance transparent conducting thin film. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Crystalline BaWO4 (BWO) powder obtained by the polymeric precursor method was structurally disordered by means of high-energy mechanical milling. For the first time a strong and broad photoluminescence (PL) has been measured at room temperature for mechanically milled BWO powder and interpreted by ground-state quantum mechanical calculations in the density functional theory framework. Two periodic models have been studied; one representing the crystalline form and the other one representing the disordered BWO powder. These models allowed the calculation of electronic properties, which are consistent with the experimental results, showing that structural disorder in the lattice is an important condition to generate an intense and broad PL band. CaMoO4 (CMO) disordered and ordered thin films were prepared by the complex polymerization method (CPM). The films were annealed at different temperatures and time in a conventional resistive furnace (RF) and in a microwave (MW) oven. The microstructure and surface morphology of the structure were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). Order and disorder were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical reflectance. A strong photoluminescence (PL) emission was observed in the disordered thin films and was attributed to complex cluster vacancies. The experimental results were compared with density functional and Hartree-Fock calculations. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
